The 2015 Washington County Fair Program - 13
Fair is county’s largest attraction Dating back to 1883, the Washington County Fair has been the ultimate culmination of agriculture and entertainment for residents of Washington County. The fair exhibits the hard work and dedication of those involved in the agriculture field and allows everyone to come together and enjoy the best of what the area has to offer. Every year a multitude of attractions draws people to the fairgrounds to celebrate. Whether it’s the tractor pulls, the rides, the food, winning prizes or the educational experience of discovering the vast agriculture of the county, people pour into the fairgrounds each year. For the first six years of its existence the fair was held in the Town of Jackson and was hosted by the Farmers and Mechanics Agricultural Society. After its time at Lake Lauderdale Park in Jackson, a new society called the Cambridge Valley Ag ricultural Society and Stock Breeders Association took control and relocated the fair to a new location in Cambridge. In its time at the
Cambridge location, the fair grew exponentially more popular and began to draw crowds from further away. Prior to the popularization of private automobiles, trains were the ideal way for scores of “out-of-towners” to make their way to the fair. The

Railroad offered a very popular service at the time; the company would supply round trip rides to and from the fair, which would also include admission. Residents from Granville, Fort Ann, Fort Edward and other areas could all utilize this service for under $3. The popularity of the Cambridge site was probably due to the fact that it included 40 acres, stables

World War II had a negative impact on the fair, as the fairgrounds were not open during the war, leading to its bankruptcy. es and in 1954 the fair was conducted at the intersection of Routes 29 and 40 in Greenwich, the presentday location of the Hannaford Supermarket. The two Boards of Directors, although working together, were still separate boards, and they decided to move the fair in 1961 to its current location at the intersection of Route 29 and Old Schuylerville Road in Greenwich, which was initially purchased as a 25-acre plot but has grown immensely ever since. The 1960s and 70s in particular saw drastic expansion of the fair grounds, which allowed the event to become the spectacle that it is today. “There were new buildings added almost every year through the 1960s and 1970s and further additions were made in the 80s and 90s,” said JoAnne Booth. “It’s an ongoing thing. Our fair is extremely fortunate to have the buildings and facilities that are here.” In 1967, a 43-acre parcel was added on to the grounds and four years later a dormitory was added to supply housing for the large number of

kids involved in the fair, especially those involved in the 4-H and Future Farmers of America programs. In 1977, a historic school house was erected at the fairgrounds. The 1970s also saw some events and attractions come and go, such as pony racing which lasted three or four years. In 1991, the Cambridge Valley Agricultural Society Board of Directors and the Washington County Junior Fair Board of Directors, which had been working together for decades, finally merged into one 32-member volunteer board. The name of the new organization was simply the Washington County Fair Inc., which has stuck as the name ever since. In 1999, the agriculture center was built and in 2008 another 40 acres were thrown into the mix to

ground stands at 120 acres and the fair is now the largest tourist attraction in Washington County, with more than 100,000 people flocking to it from all over the country each year. Even
some famous politicians weren’t left saying “holy smokes we’re missing the fair,” as the likes of Hillary Clinton, George Pataki and Mario Cuomo have made their way to Greenwich to celebrate the area’s agriculture. This year’s fair kicks off on Monday, Aug. 24, with the gates opening at 5 p.m. The gates will open at 9 a.m. the remainder of the week, through the final day on Sunday, Aug. 30. Admission is $10 per day; all-week passes are available for $30. Kids under 13 get in free, as do active military personnel with valid identification. There will be a carnival fun day, senior citizen day, children’s day and family fun day, each offering unique discounts. As usual, parking is free.

Midway rides await young and old America’s largest traveling amusement park will be returning to the Washington County Fair for yet another year of exciting rides, bright lights and thrills for both young and old. To accommodate both the thrill-seekers and the less adventure-inclined, Amusements of America breaks its rides down into five levels. The most adventurous rides receive a 5-rating, or “aggressive thrill,” while the more mellowed receive a 1-rating, or “low thrill.” Additionally, the rides are broken into four categories, which expand on the specifics of each ride. The categories include Spectacular
Rides, Thrill Rides, Family Rides and Kiddy Rides. Amusements of America is in its 76th year of existence and has been run by

the New Jersey-based Vivona family for all of them. The company was established in 1940 when Antonio Vivona purchased the Ferris wheel from the 1939 World’s Fair. Vivona’s five sons would haul the wheel around from
one of the brothers. “We took it and the ice cream machine and we played local festivals in New Jersey.” This year, the ride hours will be Monday 5-11 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday noon to 11 p.m. and Sunday noon to 9 p.m. All hours for the rides

Agri-cadabra Who knew farming and education could both be so much fun? Brad Matchett did. Matchett’s popular “Agri-cadabra” show returns once again to the Washington County Fair, as he uses entertainment, humor, balloons and trivia to educate and engage his audience about agriculture. Matchett travels throughout the east with this interesting and educational show that delights people of all ages.

Hot Dog Pig Races
Call it the “Ham-tucky Derby,” the “Squeak-ness” or the “Pork-mont Steaks.” Whatever you want to call it, it’s a good time for everybody. Hot Dog pig racing is back, and it continues to be one of the most popular attractions among all ages at the Washington County Fair. Their natural comedic talents provide riveting entertainment as they bolt from the starting gate and race around the track with all their might, snorting and squealing as their stub legs churn and curly tails sail along behind.
Sylvia & the Magic Trunk From the tender age of 5, Sylvia Fletcher had already found her passion. Her love of puppets prompted an interest in the art of ventriloquism, and her parents obliged by giving her “Willie Talk,” her very first “vent” figure. Inspired by famous ventriloquists such as Paul Winchell, Jeff Dunham and Shari Lewis, she practiced every day. Soon she was performing for her family and at talent shows. She enjoys dazzling audiences of all types, bringing her act to theaters, schools, parties, businesses and festivals where she shows off her wide range of characters, including “Chito” the Mexican Opossum, “Smoulder” the Stega Dragon, “Amazing Steve” the Genie and more. Be sure to check out this amazing, hilarious family show.

Puddles will keep generations giggling with her brilliant antics that include children’s entertainment, clown magic, and general clowning around in the vicinity of the picnic pavilion. And when she’s not yucking it up at the fair, Puddles is available for appearances at birthday parties, conventions and other local events.

Extreme Illusions and Escapes
One of the largest touring illusion shows in the country will be tripping minds all week at the Washington County Fairgrounds. The show promises to entertain audiences of all ages with a mix of amazing stage illusions, entertaining and skill escapes, audience participation and exciting music to supplement the thrilling activities and add some suspense. Between spikes, handcuffs, saws and various illusions, there is something to keep anyone on the edge of their seat during the show.
Mutts Gone Nuts Scott Houghton and Joan Houghton are not strangers to the Washington County Fair. They performed in the early 1990s when it was a much smaller affair. The fair has grown quite a bit since then, and so has their act, as they’ve turned a simple comedy juggling act into a huge Where: Bluebird Road production involving their closest canine When: Tuesday-Sunday, companions, called “Mutts Gone Nuts.” 11:00 a.m., 2:00 & 4:30 p.m. The Houghtons have 18 well-cared-for rescue dogs, and 10 of them will join them at the fair for a crowd-pleasing “K9 Cabaret,” as they call it. They have dogs that can jump rope, dogs that can walk the tightrope – even one that can “talk” – and they’re all a part of this comedy-heavy show that features plenty of audience participation. If that’s not impressive enough, they also have world-renowned dog trainer Samantha Valle on hand. She’s performed with her pooches on big stages like the Ellen Show, Letterman, the Steve Harvey Show and halftime at Philadelphia Eagles games. It’s a show you won’t want to miss.

The Fair: There’s an app for that Patrons at the Washington County Fair will be able to tap into new technology this year to enhance their fair experience. In July, the Fair released its own smartphone application or “app” that will enable cell phone users to instantly interact with the Fair and get up-to-theminute information. Ida Williams, the fair’s director of marketing and public relations, led the effort to develop the new app. She said the idea came about when a company offered to create an app for the fair – at a cost that would start at $7,000. That was far more than the fair could afford, said Williams, so she started looking at other options. As the third largest county fair in New York State, she said, having an app seemed like an important service to offer patrons. Williams found an app builder who helped guide her through the process of creating the new tech piece, and did it herself, at a cost of just $400. “It wasn’t that hard,” she said.
With the app, the fair now has a means to communicate instantaneously with patrons through “push” notifications. “I’m excited about this,” said Williams. Those who have downloaded the app will get notices about rain delays or other changes in the fair’s schedule. “The notification will be right there,” she said. In the future, she hopes that the fair will be able to get vendors tied into the app, so that they can offer specials to fair-goers. “We will add to it as we go along,” said Williams. She noted that the fair will always provide a print schedule for non-tech attendees, but believes that the app will be a very convenient way for patrons to have instant access to the schedule. Smartphone users can find the app under Washington County Fair in the App Store for i-Phone users, or Google Play for Android phone owners.

MUSIC Smokey Greene Band Smokey Greene is calling 2015 the “Final Tour,” thus making the Washington County Fair the third to last performance of his touring career. The 85-year-old Greene, whose motto is “Keep Country in Country Music,” aims to do just that through
Where: Entertainment Tent 1 When: Monday, 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. each of his performances. Greene taught himself to play the banjo in 1944 and ever since has been involved heavily in creating music for all to listen to. Greene was a member of the United State Air Force and it was during those travels that he found his passion
for playing Bluegrass music; particularly his time in California spurred this interest. For over a dozen years the Smokey Greene Bluegrass Festival was a popular bluegrass festival in the greater area. It started in 1972 in Corinth. The man known as “The Friendly Voice of Country Music in Upstate New York,” has worked collaboratively with bands and has gone out on his own as well. Greene has worked with such famous musicians as Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Tex Ritter, which has only added to his passion for good old-style country music. Simply put, Greene is a legend in area music and that’s why he keeps coming back to the Washington County Fair.
Jeffrey Lee Williams Jeffrey Lee Williams made his Washington County Fair debut last year and he enjoyed it so much Where: Entertainment Tent 1 he’s decidWhen: Saturday, 6:00 p.m. ed to come back for and 8:00 p.m. round two. Williams, who grew up in Clarks Mills and graduated from Schuylerville, is familiar with the area and the tradition of the Washington County Fair. He started singing at clubs in the Lake George/Glens Falls/ Saratoga region about 20 years ago, and then relocated to Nashville, where he recorded two albums and sang at some of the most
famous clubs in the country music genre, such as the Broken Spoke and the Wild Horse Saloon. Eventually, in 2006, Williams moved back to the area and has been playing shows back in his hometown area. Williams said, like last year, that his concerts will be based predominately on country hits from the 1980s and 1990s. He said the hits will include the likes of Glen Campbell, Ronnie Milsap, Conway Twitty, George Jones, Toby Keith, Garth Brooks, George Strait, and Brooks and Dunn. Additionally, Williams said, he’ll mix in some classic country and southern rock tunes.

Fairgrounds now offering free Wi-Fi After several months of laying cable and making new connections, the Washington County Fairgrounds will now offer free Wi-Fi to fair patrons and vendors. And if all goes well, next year fair-goers should be able to use credit and debit cards to pay food vendors, while a more “interactive” ticket system should speed them through the gates into the fair. “We’re pretty excited to catch up with new technology,” said Mark St. Jacques, general manager of the fair. The fairgrounds gained access to the high-speed connection when the company Primelink ran fiber optic cables up Rte. 29 to the fair. “They supplied us with the intention of becoming a fair sponsor,” said St. Jacques. The Plattsburghbased Primelink provides Internet connections primarily to business customers. Primelink first ran fiber optic cable from Montreal to Albany in 1996, said Randy LaBombard, director of sales. Through the years the company has branched out through Hudson Falls, Fort Edward and Queensbury, and then to Glens Falls
Hospital. Once Primelink ran from Saratoga to Greenwich along Rte. 29, the company had cable right by the fairgrounds. “We try to get involved in the local community whenever we can,” LaBombard said. “We offered to be a sponsor of the fair and provide the service free of charge.” With the fiber optic cable run to the fairgrounds, Hudson Valley Wireless came onsite to create a distribution network on the grounds. “We have run fiber cable to buildings around the fairgrounds to create access points,” said Jason Guzzo, general manager of Hudson Valley Wireless. “We have created an internet zone that will run from the commercial building to the public safety building.” The firm’s base in the commercial building will supply the connection to not only fair patrons but to vendors. Customers within 300 feet of the building, including the picnic pavilion at the 4-H booth, will be able to use the Wi-Fi connection free of charge, said Primelink marketing manager Vicki Marking.
“They (vendors) will be able to use Wi-Fi for transactions now,” said St. Jacques. Next year, the fair hopes to extend the network so that food vendors will be able to accept debit and credit cards. “Next year we will expand on it,” said Marking. “It’s kind of a test; we’ll see how people use it.” St. Jacques noted that the fair felt it was necessary to add a Wi-Fi connection to take the pressure off the cell tower at the site. “The data from the cell towers can become limited when 20,000 people are trying to access it all at once,” he said. “This will free up space (on the cell tower) for the phones to operate and provide the fair itself with a better internal connection.”
Eventually, he said, the enhanced wireless connections will enable the fair to offer a more “interactive” ticket system at the gate, which will speed up lines. Like Primelink, Hudson Valley Wireless did all the work to set up the Wi-Fi zone free of charge, as a sponsorship for the fair. “We’re trying to support the community that supports us,” said Guzzo. In addition to the new Wi-Fi, St. Jacques touted the new Washington County Fair app that will keep fairgoers up-to-date on all fair happenings. “It’s a great way for the fair office to get information out,” he said. “For those who want to utilize the technology, it will be offered.”

4-H offers ‘lifelong learning’ Having the freedom to get involved however they’d like is exactly what the Washington County 4-H youths are able to do at the Washington County Fair. “The fair is an opportunity for youth to show their projects off,” said Chrys Nestle, a 4-H Educator for Washington County and the Youth Superintendent for the fair. Things youths bring along to showcase are animals, some sort of public presentation, baking, photography and more. If they don’t have anything of their own to display, youths can simply help out by volunteering at another vendor. The possibilities are endless. Nestle made it clear there is one display in particular that stands out from others. “Photography has played a really big role in the past,” she said, and it has only gotten bigger and more diverse. The youths take all different types of pictures including scenic, portrait, still life, animals or something else. Nestle credits the popularity of photography to the many technological advancements such as cell phones and digitally enhanced photography, especially with the new computer programs which allow photographs to be altered to one’s liking. Yet, no matter what they’re doing, there is always one objective in mind. “The main goal at 4-H is to develop lifelong learning,” Nestle said. To do so, the youths are held to certain expectations. The three categories 4-H works on are science, technology, engineering and mathematics; healthy living; and citizenship and leadership.
Nestle said 4-H helps develop a sense of belonging, independence, mastery and generosity. The goal is to enable 4-H’ers to be able to build on skills they have while lear ning to do things on their own, knowing there is always someone there to help if needed. Still, that is not all 4-H stresses. “We strongly encourage community service,” Nestle said. Working on different aspects with the youths will ultimately make them rounded individuals, she said, adding that 4-H works as both a community club and enrichment program; it is not a formal education. “We are all about develop-
ing the youth,” Nestle said. One of the main things stressed at the fair is that there isn’t a first, second or third place winner. Instead the youths are judged using the Danish system. This focuses on earning or a c c o m plishing something. They are able to win red, white and blue ribbons after each showcase is compared to a standard, not to the other entries. Something new to look for while roaming around the fairgrounds is a class called Produced in New York, which Nestle herself will be running. A lot of great knowledge and experiences come out of 4-H and being involved in something where you can contribute in so many ways
is truly something 4-H works on. After speaking with Margaret Brownell, who is 18 now and has been involved in 4-H since she was about 5, one can see just how being involved in 4-H can open the door to other wonderful opportunities. This year she will be showcasing three Ayrshire heifers at the fair. But even more exciting, she won a trip to Colorado where she and another friend will be presenting in front of the Cattle Feeders Hall of Fame. They won this trip because of a blog they started called Advocates for Agriculture, to spread the word about how important agriculture is to the country and community. From her experience in 4-H for many years, Brownell said she has gained a lot of knowledge. “I’ve learned that everyone has a story and the best part is to tell you story,” she said. “I’ve learned to have a voice.”

The Cheese Lady In the creative world of culinary arts, Sarah Kaufmann has literally carved a unique niche. The former graphic artist has focused her talents on cheese – not making it, or painting it, but carving it. Her work has ranged Where: Ag. Center, milking parlor from a 10-pound When: Wednesday-Friday violin, to 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. a 300p o u n d gorilla, to a 1,900-pound astronaut and to a 2,185-pound Year of Dairy Cows cheese creation that was displayed at the Indiana State Fair. Kaufmann’s cheese-carving career evolved from her experience in food marketing and promotion where she learned a special event can be a catalyst for drawing media attention and building retail sales. Her decision to become a cheese carver combines her artistic talents and marketing skills to entertain and educate consumers, the media, retailers and chefs. Known as “The Cheese Lady,” Kaufmann has received hundreds of commissions for her work. She creates sculptures in her studio and sculpts cheese at countless venues including many fairs. Although she uses many kinds of cheese, she works most
often with mild yellow or white cheddar. Kaufmann returns to the Washington County Fair for the third straight year and will display her talents on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the milking parlor. She invites fairgoers to stop in to, talk with her, and to enjoy delicious free samples of Cabot cheese.

Museum, Schoolhouse Display Heritage With an extensive collection of household and farm implements from 100 years ago, the Farm Museum and Schoolhouse is a fascinating step back in time. The collection housed within the museum features everyday items from the 19th century through the irst half of the 20th century. “Everything in the museum was manufactured or used in Washington County,” said Education Director Joan Prouty. This year during the fair, attendees can watch demonstrations of several vintage crafts. Out in front of the museum, the “Pottery lady” will create small pottery on a wheel every day. A wood turner will craft bowls by using saws, a foot treadle and lathe. In the woodshop, a craftsperson will demonstrate how to use hand tools to make dovetail joints, and will show how to sharpen and maintain old tools. Prouty noted that the kitchen area of the museum will feature a dentist’s ofice and will also have a display of several types of grinders. “We’re hoping to have a blacksmith again, along with people doing tatting and quilting,” she said. On Saturday and Sunday during fair week, lax that was harvested last year at the fair will be processed into linen. The museum’s milk house is now complete and will be open for the fair. Prouty noted that it has a more enhanced display this year. The museum’s hay wagon has been restored and will be on display outside the building. Visitors can see how education used to be at the Perkins Hollow School House, which was moved from Chambers road in Salem to the fairgrounds in 1977. “It is listed as a landmark schoolhouse by the Country School Association of America,” Prouty
said. “It was built in 1850 and used until 1910. All the old wooden desks and quite a few of the original artifacts from the school are still inside.” In June, the schoolhouse hosted the national conference of the Country School Association. Prouty said that attendees came from 25 states and Ontario, Canada to attend. The museum also hosts school ield trips throughout the year, and special events such as Family Fun Day and the Youth Art Show. A popular video area, featuring a variety of videos, including one of ice harvesting, has returned and will run during the fair. The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the fair and is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. during other special events held at the fair grounds May through October. In addition, the museum can be opened for group tours on request. For information on scheduling a group tour, contact the fair ofice at 518-692-2464.

Don’t miss the FFA Farmland One of the cutest spots on the fairgrounds is the FFA Farmland. With a collection of baby animals including calves, goats, piglets, horses, reindeer and alpacas, it’s a delight for young and old. The FFA Farmland is a joint venture between FFA Chapters from Greenwich, Granville, Hartford, Argyle, Salem and Schuylerville. Connie Lundberg-Watkins will return this year with miniature horse named Cookie, who will be painted with illustrations showing a horse’s skele-
ton and digestive system. This year, Cookie will be joined by Rosie, a therapy horse. FFA members and other volunteers will be on hand to answer fair-goer’s questions, as well as to care for the animals throughout the week. The National FFA is a national youth leadership organization for students enrolled in high school agricultural education courses.

Adirondack Drill Team Founded in 2011, the Adirondack Drill Team is an all-women’s equestrian team that was created when the members’ previous team disbanded. The riders wanted to keep doing what they loved – performing horseback drill maneuvers to music for audiences of all ages. Current members include Shellie Boucher, Lisa DeWitt, Chantelle Waldron, Connie Liebig, Arlene Starr, Sherry Clark, Vicki Webberley, Gayna Croff, Abby Boucher and Megan Tyler. The team is based out of Burchland Country Experience in Hartford. Fairgoers can expect to see a new routine from the Adirondack Drill Team. “We always do a new routine at the fair,” said Shellie Boucher. The team’s combined experience

More than a Fair Every year thousands of people flock to the Washington County Fair to revel in the joy and entertainment of fair week. It’s estimated upward of 100,000 people filter through the turnstiles every August. But there’s a lot more happening at the fairgrounds than just the fair itself. While no other single event can boast of such large crowds, the fairgrounds remain a busy place throughout the year. For seven months of the year, from April through October, the fairgrounds play host to a variety of notable events. The Washington County Antique Fair and Flea Market spends two weekends a year at the fairgrounds— the first weekends in May and August—and features more than 200 vendors from throughout the United States and Canada. Dealers sell a variety of rare antiques, hard to find collectibles and a myriad of crafts. And because the show is traditionally held a week before the Brimfield, Mass.,
antique show, there are many items that appear for sale for the first time. The 2015 shows will be held the first weekend in May, and the first weekend in August and feature vendors in both indoor and outdoor venues. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. There is also an “early buyer” pass, which gives guests access to the show during setup on Friday. To learn more visit fairgroundshows.com. For the past four years the fairgrounds have hosted the Southern Adirondack Fiber Festival, a two-day celebration featuring more than 120 vendors from throughout the Northeast. The weekend includes workshops, demonstrations, livestock shows and much more. This year’s event will be held on Sept. 27 & 28. For more information, visit adkfiber.com. The local affiliate of the American Cancer Society has held its Bark for
Life event at the fairgrounds for the past three years. This noncompetitive walk for dogs and their owners raises funds and awareness for the organization’s fight against cancer. The fairgrounds also host a number of smaller events by local groups and organizations. Horse, cow and rabbit shows, dog agility trials, livestock sales and other agricultural events are held there throughout the year. Local Scout groups and 4H clubs often hold events at the fairgrounds, and the Washington County Seniors held their annual picnic there last month. The fairgrounds is also host to the Tour of the Battenkill bike race held in May. The grounds are also available for family reunions, wedding receptions, corporate events, fundraisers and other private events. To learn more about the events held at the fairgrounds or to inquire how you could hold your own event, visit washingtoncountyfair.com.

Hall Brothers Racing returns to the Washington County Fair with the popular Rammunition and the six-time Truck of the Year, the Raminator. For the first time, rides will be offered to the public in a monster truck. On Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the track, families are invited to take a free ride in a spe-

cially seated monster truck. According to the fair’s publicity director, Ida Williams, the truck has seats bolted in the back to accommodate passengers. There are trucks, and then there is the Raminator. The five-ton 2013 Ram Heavy Duty with 66-inch tires features a 565-cubic-inch SuperCharged Hemi engine that cranks out 2,000 horsepower. The truck is valued at more than $150,000. Hall Brothers Racing debuted the original Raminator in January 2002, and it was named Truck of the Year after winning four of seven Pro Monster Truck series races. The truck went on
to win titles in each of the next four years, a stretch of dominance matched only by Team Big Foot’s four straight Penda Series Championships. Since that time, Tim and Mark Hall, owners of the Raminator, have added Rammunition, which wasted no time in establishing itself as one of the most feared opponents in monster truck racing. Mark Hall will drive the Raminator, while the Rammunition will be driven by Mat Dishman. Both monster trucks will be on display on Memory Lane Friday through Sunday and will perform a car-crushing exposition at 2 p.m. on Sunday, before the Demolition Derby.

Fair hosts baking contest Baking contests sponsored by national companies are usually only held at major state fairs, but the Washington County Fair is one of the rare county fairs that can boast of a contest sponsored by the King Arthur Flour Company. The event was brought to the fair by Mike Bittel, the King Arthur Flour Senior Vice
EMPIRE
President/General Manager who lives in Washington County, and who lobbied for a local version of the national baking competitions. Bittel will be one of the judges at this year’s event. This year, adult contestants will compete to make their favorite coffee cake. Adult contestants
