Annual Lake Bomoseen Derby, a Valentine's tradition Valentine's Day and ice fishing go hand in hand on Lake Bomoseen. The 38th annual Lake Bomoseen Ice Fishing Derby is expected to occure Valentine's Day weekend 2016. “Many years ago the Castleton Lions were asked by Tom Evanoika, if we would be interested in taking over the ice fishing derby and without hesitation we did,” coordinator Stan Patch explained. The derby, which is put on by the Castleton Lions, is now held annually to honor Evanoika and his close friend and fellow fishermen “Bomoseen” Bob Newton. “Tom Evanoika and ‘Bomoseen’ Bob were the best
of friends, when Bob died, Tom asked if we’d name it after him and we did.” Patch added, “So when Tom passed, we added his name too.” The derby has grown into a local tradition, attracting many area fishers. In an area known as the Lakes Region, there are a plethora of different derbies to accommodate the many different lakes. Patch attributed the success of the derby to its location and demographic. “I think in our area there are 5 or 6 different derbies and our local fishermen always support them.” Patch added, “They are a close knit group and we certainly appreciate all of their help.” The proceeds that the Lions
Club obtains from the derby help with a glut of different charitable deeds that the group conducts each and every year. The money goes toward sight and hearing, school projects, Halloween parties and many other community charities and events. “Every cent we take in from this derby goes right back into the community,” Patch concluded, “We have so many different charities that we are involved with.” The 37th annual Lake Bomoseen Ice Fishing Derby is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 13 and 14. Information will be available as the event draws closer.
The 38th annual Lake Bomoseen Ice Fishing Derby is expected to be held Feb. 14 & 15.

Castleton Lions Club Serving the community since 1947 The Castleton Lions Club has been serving the community for 68 years and although the names and faces change, the goal remains the same: help the community and the world. Membership in the Castleton Lions Club constantly hovers around 60 people, so the club is going strong as it continues to support the community with its many charitable endeavors. Recently the Lions completed their 56th annual auction, which draws large crowds each year and serves as the organization’s largest and longest-standing fundraiser. Member John Burke said the event has evolved in “more of an event” then just another fundraiser, as it packs the town green with patrons each year. Burke added that the annual event includes food, goods, drawings and the humor of members of the Lions Club. In addition to the ever-popular auction, the Lions are also well known for the popular ice fishing derby, which loads

hundreds of people onto the ice of Lake Bomoseen’s Crystal Beach in hopes of reeling in a keeper of a fish. The year 2016 will be the 38th year for the fishing derby and the fundraiser generally draws a crowd of around 300 participants. Having two major fundraisers makes life a little easier for the Lions Club as they aim to both help the club on a national level and help the community locally, with various charitable actions. In addition to helping with the Lions International’s projects for hearing and seeing, the

With Vermont, and Castleton in particular, being great areas for outdoorsmen, the Castleton Lions annually send 20 kids to Fish and Wildlife Conservation Camp on Lake Bomoseen and the Lions also have a long-standing hunter safety program, which has been heralded by the state of Vermont. The Castleton Lions keep a close eye on the community’s youth and annually award scholarships to graduating seniors from Fair Haven Union School. Also, the Lions

host a popular Halloween party each year at Castleton University, which draws good crowds. Burke said the students at the college put in a lot of work and put on “quite a show.” The club also hosts an annual Kids Fishing Derby, which took place in May in West Haven. In addition to all the aforementioned charitable endeavors and fundraisers, the Lions take on any project around the community that they notice and think they can help with. Burke said that any time the group sees someone doing a community service project they try to give funds to assist. The Lions Club is always looking for new members and welcomes any communityoriented person to join. The group meets on the first and third Monday of the month at the Trak Inn in Bomoseen. Colonial Day House Tour a favorite Castleton event If you’ve ever wanted to travel back in time, the Castleton Woman’s Club offers that opportunity once a year in the middle of August. For 77 years, the Woman’s Club has opened its doors for the annual Colonial Day House Tour, a self-guided walking tour featuring a broad spectrum of 19th-century architectural design and the evolution of architectural design. The tour includes 20 sites throughout the village of Castleton, including period homes, public buildings, galleries and historic sites. The Federated Church on Main Street, described as
builder Thomas Royal Dake’s architectural masterpiece, is a popular stop on the tour. The pulpit, with its intricate moldings and panels, is one of the most extraordinary in the state. Dake is also famous for his beautifully scaled spiral staircases, and several of the homes on the tour feature staircases by the great architect. Meanwhile, at the Higley House, home base of the Castleton Historical Society, visitors can tour the exhibits, antique tools, carriage collection and period fashion display of 19th-century clothing and accessories. On display at the
Higley House is the famous Blue Cat Quilt depicting historic landmarks in town and highlights from the book The Blue Cat of Castle Town, a fictional account about a mythical Blue Cat helping real-life members of Castleton’s rich history overcome their trials. It’s a book whose moral is shared with both the Woman’s Club and the quaint but beautiful town of Castleton to this day. The quilt based on the book was entirely hand-sewn and hand-quilted with over 375 hours spent in creating the unique pattern of quilting stitches, and is a point of pride
for the town and the Historical Society. Other special exhibits at homes along the tour include spinning and chair caning demonstrations, and there is always live music and an ice cream social at Castleton Free Library. The Castleton Colonial Day House Tour is held annually, rain or shine, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tour tickets are typically $20 ($18 for seniors 62 and up) and can be purchased on Colonial Day at ticket booths on Main Street. History of Castleton Castleton was chartered in 1761. The charter for 36 square miles of land was granted by Gov. Benning Wentworth of New Hampshire and divided the land into 70 "rights" or "shares." Wentworth retained ownership of two shares, and several others were given for churches and a school. In the spring of 1767, the town’s first settlers, Amos Bird and Noah Lee, arrived in Castleton from Salisbury, Connecticut. Castleton's favorite landmark, Birdseye Mountain, is named for
Col. Bird. He had acquired 40 shares of land when the town was chartered and built a permanent residence there in the summer of 1769. Three families had settled in Castleton by 1770. More settlers followed, and by 1777 the town consisted of 17 families. In May 1775 Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys met in Castleton with Benedict Arnold to plan their next day's attack on Fort Ticonderoga, 30 miles west, on the New York side of Lake Champlain.

Saw mills and gristmills were established. During the 19th century the slate and marble industries thrived in and around Castleton. The railroad came in 1854, and the last half of the century saw the development of tourism around Lake Bomoseen. In the 19th century Castleton flourished, and many residents built

Castleton University Castleton State College was officially re-named Castleton University July 23. In a unanimous vote, the Vermont State Colleges Board of Trustees adopted the change, which was effective immediately. As a result, Castleton will be better positioned to expand its efforts in private foundational and federal government funding, entrepreneurial endeavors, and other areas of fundraising. Additionally, new and expanded graduate programs, and a proposed doctoral program will benefit from a broader appeal and a more common understanding among prospective students of all Castleton has to offer in the areas of post-graduate studies. Finally, as a university, Castleton will break down a common language barrier that exists within international recruitment. Many countries associate a “college” with what is traditionally considered a high school in the United States, while “university” is more widely recognized as higher education. From a day-to-day perspective, the change will not be noticeable outside of updates to signage and merchandise. Class sizes and student-to-faculty ratios will also stay low, as the university perceives this as an important component to a Castleton education. Castleton feels the name change more accurately reflects the range of academic programs available to its graduates and to current students. Graduating from “Castleton University,” it feels, will help students compete on a more equal footing with graduates of other teaching universities of similar size and scope. The name change will not affect financial aid, faculty, admission standards or Castleton’s status as a member of Vermont State Colleges. The graduating class of December 2015 will be the first to receive Castleton University diplomas. However, alumni of Castleton State College can request updated diplomas reflecting the school’s new name for free through Jan. 1, 2016. All transcripts requested after July 24, 2015, will indicate association with Castleton University.
Castleton State College has officially been renamed Castleton University.

The Old Cobbler Shop Possibly the oldest brick structure in Vermont, The Old Cobbler shop was acquired by the Castleton Historical Society in 1947 and turned into their irst museum in 1954. Located at the corner of Main Street and Cemetery Street, The Old Cobbler Shop stands on a corner of a piece of land that Zadock Remington bought from Amos Bird in 1769. Remington's Tavern was located further west on this piece of land. David and Zadock Remington sold 6 ¾ acres of their land to Nehemiah Hoyt in 1774. Nehemiah Hoyt in his turn, sold it to Enos Merrill in 1794 by which time this small brick building had been erected and Merrill used as a tannery and cobbler's shop.
