Railroad offered a very popular service at the time; the company would supply round trip rides to and from the fair, which would also include admission. Residents from Granville, Fort Ann, Fort Edward and other areas could all utilize this service for under $3. The popularity of the Cambridge site was probably due to the fact that it

the power of electricity. World War II had a negative impact on the fair, as the fairgrounds were not open during the war, leading to its bankruptcy. The bankruptcy could have stymied the growth of the fair or destroyed the fair all together, but ultimately, it didn’t. The Cambridge Valley Agricultural Society and Washington County Junior Fair, which were previously two separate organiza-

tions, joined forces and in 1954 the fair was conducted at the intersection of Routes 29 and 40 in Greenwich, the presentday location of the Hannaford Supermarket. The two Boards of Directors, although working together, were still separate boards, and they decided to move the fair in 1961 to its current location at the intersection of Route 29 and Old Schuylerville Road in Greenwich, which was initially purchased as a 25-acre plot but has grown immensely ever since. The 1960s and 70s in particular saw drastic expansion of the fair grounds, which allowed the event to become the spectacle that it is today. “There were new buildings added almost every year through the 1960s and 1970s and further additions were made in the 80s and 90s,” said JoAnne Booth. “It’s an ongoing thing. Our fair is extremely fortunate to have the buildings and facilities that are here.” In 1967, a 43-acre parcel was added on to the grounds and four years later a dormitory was added to supply housing for the large number of

kids involved in the fair, especially those involved in the 4-H and Future Farmers of America programs. In 1977, a historic school house was erected at the fairgrounds. The 1970s also saw some events and attractions come and go, such as pony racing which lasted three or four years. In 1991, the Cambridge Valley Agricultural Society Board of Directors and the Washington County Junior Fair Board of Directors, which had been working together for decades, finally merged into one 32-member volunteer board. The name of the new organization was simply the Washington County Fair Inc., which has stuck as the name ever since. In 1999, the agriculture center was built and in

thousands who come, while also allowing some room for potential expansion of the event. Currently, the fair-

ground stands at 120 acres and the fair is now the largest tourist attraction in Washington County, with more than 120,000 people flocking to it from all over the country each year. This year’s fair kicks off on Monday, Aug. 22, with the gates opening at 5 p.m. The gates will open at 9 a.m. the remainder of the week, through the final day on Sunday, Aug. 28. Admission is $10 per day; all-week passes are available for $30. Kids under 13 get in free, as do active military personnel with valid identification. There will be a carnival fun day, senior citizen day, children’s day and family fun day, each offering unique discounts. As usual, parking is free.

FREE ENTERTAINMENT Buffalo and Brandy A highly decorated musical duo of husband and wife, Buffalo and Brandy are a staple at county fairs and other venues throughout the country. Ken (Buffalo) and Mary-Anne (Brandy) Faree both come from small-town, USA, and illustrate that small town influence through their country music. The duo has added some upbeat modern twist to the classical country feel, so there is a little something for everyone during a Buffalo and Brandy show. After touring for more than 25 years, Buffalo and Brandy pride themselves on getting the audience involved in their show and illustrating a positive message and positive vibe. Both have been heavily involved in music since high school and even before that. “I would get a pass from study hall every day so I could go into the music room and rehearse on the drums,” Ken said. The duo has received awards, including the Presidential C Flag Award, NYS Broadcaster’s Award and many certificates of appreciation from community organizations.

He entices the crowd by singing “Old McDonald,” throwing in plenty of fun facts, transforming an audience member into a farmer, cooking with Houdini rabbit, and incredibly inflating a 6-foot balloon. Matchett travels throughout the east with this interesting and educational show that delights people of all ages.

MUSIC Smokey Greene Band Smokey Greene is calling 2015 the “Final Tour,” thus making the Washington County Fair the third to last performance of his touring career.

Where: Entertainment Tent 1 When: Monday, 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. The 85-year-old Greene, whose motto is “Keep Country in Country Music,” aims to do just that through each of his performances. Greene taught himself to play the banjo in 1944 and ever since has been involved heavily in creating music for all to listen to. Greene was a member of the United State Air Force and it was during those travels that he found his

passion for playing Bluegrass music; particularly his time in California spurred this interest. For over a dozen years the Smokey Greene Bluegrass Festival was a popular bluegrass festival in the greater area. It started in 1972 in Corinth. The man known as “The Friendly Voice of Country Music in Upstate New York,” has worked collaboratively with bands and has gone out on his own as well. Greene has worked with such famous musicians as Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Tex Ritter, which has only added to his passion for good old-style country music. Simply put, Greene is a legend in area music and that’s why he keeps coming back to the Washington County Fair.

Jeff Williams

Jeff Williams returns to entertain fairgoers with his strong vocals. His performance will feature THROWBACK COUNTRY music from the 80’s and 90’s. Hits including songs from Toby Keith, Garth Brooks, George Where: Entertainment Tent 1 Strait, When: Tuesday, 6:00 p.m. Brooks and Dunn, and 8:00 p.m. and other male artist from the past five decades, will have the audience dancing and singing along. Other genres included in his act are southern rock, classic rock and patriotic songs. Jeff Williams is a native of Washington County, growing up in Clarks Mills. He

began singing in clubs in the Lake George/ Glens Falls/Saratoga region over 20 years ago. In 1998 he moved to Nashville to pursue his singing career. While living in Nashville he performed at many of the famous clubs, including the Broken Spoke and the Wild Horse Saloon. He recorded two albums and had one of his original songs released as a single on country music radio. In 2006 Williams returned to his hometown area. He continues to perform at local venues and is pleased to return to the Washington County Fair for a third year. CDs will be available during his show. More information on Jeff Williams can be found at jlwmusic.com.

UPPER HUDSON MAPLE PRODUCERS The Upper Hudson Maple Producers Association sugarhouse, located at East End Drive in front of the County Bounty Building at the Washington County Fair, was built to educate the public about maple syrup and maple products and promote the region as a top maple producing area. The sugarhouse is open every day of the fair and is staffed by volunteer members of the Association. There is always someone on hand to talk about the process of making maple syrup and answer any questions that visitors have about the equipment on display. Visitors will be able to purchase maple syrup and any number of other maple products, including: maple milkshakes, maple donuts, maple cream, maple sugar candy, maple cotton candy, soft ice cream, coffee, maple fudge, maple coated nuts and much, much more. Maple cooking demonstrations will be happening throughout the week. With picnic tables and maple shade trees, the Upper Hudson Maple Producers Association Sugarhouse is a great place to stop for a snack and a rest!

Did you know... • Tapping does no permanent damage to the sugar maple tree. • Tapping sugar maple trees is a tradition in the Upper Hudson River Valley since the 18th Century. • The sugaring season lasts usually from late February to early April. • It takes about 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup. • Warm, sunny days and frosty nights are ideal for sap flow. • The harvest season ends with the coming of spring’s warm nights and the first stages of bud development on the trees. • New York is the second largest maple producing state in the nation. • The production of pure maple syrup is the oldest agricultural enterprise in the United States • Native Americans called their syrup product ‘sweetwater’ • You can freeze maple syrup • Maple syrup has 50 calories per tablespoon and is fat free. It as no additives and no preservatives.

Whole Coriander Add all ingredients to sauce pan and simmer 20 minutes. Strain through fine mesh sieve. Pan sear four boneless

chicken breasts (a 1-1/2 lb. pork tenderloin or 24 large sea scallops). Preheat oven to 325°F. Place seared breasts in shallow baking pan and pour glaze on top, basting with glaze every five minutes; and bake uncovered 15 minutes or until done. 4-H gets youth involved The Washington County 4-H continues to provide youths with opportunities to get involved at the fairgrounds. “We’re building lifelong learning skills,” said Chrys Nestle, a 4-H Educator for Washington County and the Youth Superintendent for the fair. “We want them to be active members of their community, wherever they may live.” Students spent a great amount of time preparing for the fair each year. There are three missions of the 4-H youth program: STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), living a healthy lifestyle and portraying leadership. “Our projects incorporate one or more of those missions,” Nestle said. The range of activities for 4-H participants is exciting. Some members raise and show animals, including chickens, rabbits, goats and cows. Youths also showcase homemade baked goods and present original photography for judging. However, if a child has nothing of their own to display, volunteers are always welcome at other vendors. Photography continues to gain popularity during fair week, and has gotten bigger and better. Youths take pictures of scenic landscapes, portraits, animals and much more. “Photography is huge,” Nestle said. There has been a similar trend for interest in vegetables and produce, along with textile and fiber arts. “It has bloomed among all youth,” she

added. All submissions are judged by a panel using the Danish system. Instead of winners and losers being selected, the system focuses on recognizing what the children have accomplished. Judges primarily consider age and the amount of work dedicated to the project. Entries are then awarded a red, white or blue ribbon. Another type of valuable experience gained within 4-H is communication, as participants are able to converse with judges about their projects. This is used as a tool to familiarize youths with

public speaking skills. “Part of their success,” Nestle said, “is being able to have a conversation with the judges.” All 4-Hers obtain a great deal of knowledge and hands-on experiences throughout the week.

Everyone involved is able to contribute to the goals of 4-H and lend a helping hand at the fair. The 4-H food booth will return to this year’s fairgrounds, offering hotdogs, hamburgers, sandwiches and more, along with the ice cream booth, which offers delicious milkshakes and ice cream

cones. Proceeds are used as fundraising for the club throughout the year. Both stands are operated by members of the Washington County 4-H in shifts. This is a great community service opportunity for the participants, who are able to interact with the public as well. “They work hard,” said Nestle. “Most of the kids love meeting new people.” The 4-H is a global network of youth organizations whose mission is to engage youth to reach their fullest potential, while advancing the field of youth development. Children must be at least five years old to join 4-H. It is encouraged that those interested become involved as early as possible. “The fair and 4-H provide youth with an experiential learning model,” said Nestle. “It’s an opportunity for growth and volunteerism, beyond just being at the fair.”

The Cheese Lady In the creative world of culinary arts, Sarah Kaufmann has literally carved a unique niche. The former graphic artist has focused her talents on cheese – not making it, or painting it, but carving it. Her work has ranged Where: Ag. Center, milking parlor from a 10-pound When: Wednesday-Friday violin, to 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. a 300pound gorilla, to a 1,900-pound astronaut and to a 2,185-pound Year of Dairy Cows cheese creation that was displayed at the Indiana State Fair. Kaufmann’s cheese-carving career evolved from her experience in food marketing and promotion where she learned a special event can be a catalyst for drawing media attention and building retail sales. Her decision to become a cheese carver combines her artistic talents and marketing skills to entertain and educate consumers, the media, retailers and chefs. Known as “The Cheese Lady,” Kaufmann has received hundreds of commissions for her work. She creates sculptures in her studio and sculpts cheese at countless venues including many fairs. Although she uses many kinds of cheese, she works most

often with mild yellow or white cheddar. Kaufmann returns to the Washington County Fair for the third straight year and will display her talents on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the milking parlor. She invites fairgoers to stop in to, talk with her, and to enjoy delicious free samples of Cabot cheese.

Visit www.washingtoncountyfair.com The New Incredible Talking, Milking Cow Aggie Culture, Aggie for short, named by Name the Cow contest winner Amanda Perkins of Hudson Falls NY, is found in the AG Center. The incredible Milking Cow is an interactive educational tool, allowing children of all ages to learn the art of milking and to learn about the dairy industry. Kids can take turns milking Aggie. The fiberglass milking cow is handmade and hand painted. A hidden pump delivers constant fluid from the holding tank to the udders to the authentic stainless steel milking pail. The Incredible Milking Cow talks and will say things like “I have quite an appetite. I eat 40 pounds of food every day…and then I wash it down with about a bathtub full of water!”

FFA Farmland returns The most adorable baby farm animals can be seen at the FFA Farmland, returning to the fairgrounds this year. This year’s collection includes chicks, ducks, calves, pigs, piglets, horses and alpacas. All are kid-friendly and enjoy interaction throughout the week. “We are celebrating the nursery rhyme Three Billy Goats Gruff,” said Betsy Foote, agricultural science teacher at Greenwich High School. “We will have three billy goats and a huge mountain for them to play on.” This is a

fun place for fairgoers to enjoy their favorite animals. The FFA Farmland is made possible by the FFA chapters from Granville, Greenwich, Hartford, Argyle, Salem and Schuylerville. Members and volunteers of the schools will be on hand to answer questions and take care of the animals. The National Future Farmers of America Organization is an inter-curricular student organization for high school students interested in agriculture and leadership.

Museum, Schoolhouse Display Heritage Displaying artifacts and historical items from more than 100 years ago, the Farm Museum and Perkins Hollow Schoolhouse are amazing exhibits of Washington County’s past. The collection features equipment utilized from the entire 19th century through the irst half of the 20th century. The Farm Museum, open from May to October on the fairgrounds, shows aspects of agriculture throughout the county, including antique crop production and harvesting tools. Local farmers will demonstrate how to use much of the equipment. The tools were developed to make production simpler for farmsteads. Arts and crafts demonstrations will also be available for viewing this year. Pottery will be made each day, along with a wood turner shaping bowls and other wood products. Fabrics will also be processed and woven into unique creations. In addition, information on maintaining the quality of tools will be provided. All items in the museum were manufactured or used in Washington County. The museum strives to cultivate an appreciation for agriculture by educating visitors about rural heritage. Additional buildings in the museum complex include a corncrib, summer kitchen and milking house. Also on display will be a vintage butter churn, cider press and home-delivery milk wagon. The origins of education can be seen at the schoolhouse at this year’s fair. The history of the Perkins Hollow Schoolhouse is fascinating. Built in 1850 on Chambers Road in Salem, the schoolhouse was irst used in 1853. When it was closed in 1910, the building was left untouched until 1977, when it was donated and moved to the fairgrounds. The schoolhouse has been on display at the fair each year ever since and has been recognized on several occasions. In 1984, the schoolhouse received the Washington County Historic Preservation Award, along with being

noted as a Landmark Schoolhouse in 2010 by the Country School Association of America. The wooden desks, glass windows and other artifacts inside the building are original to the time period and remain intact. A blackboard and recitation bench, where students would recite lessons to the rest of the class, are also kept in excellent condition. Each year, generations of families visit the schoolhouse to reminisce and share stories from the time period. Information on local schoolhouses and education systems is offered by volunteers. The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the fair and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. during other special events held at the fairgrounds May through October. Educated staff members and museum volunteers are available for organized programs, mainly designed for school ield trips and youth groups. For information on scheduling a group tour, contact the fair ofice at 518-692-2464.

Visit the Dairy Princess at the fair Julia Houser, the newly installed 2016 Washington County Dairy Princess, is ready to display her crown to the public and promote dairy at this year’s Washington County Fair. Houser, a 16-year-old incoming senior at Greenwich High School, will be giving out ribbons, participating in milking events, and spending time in the Dairy Princess Booth and Ag Center. She will also enjoy showing her dairy cattle. At Greenwich, Julia is active in the National Honor Society and serves as FFA President. Her Dairy Judging team placed first in New York and Julia earned a gold ranking at the National FFA Convention last fall.

Outside of FFA, Julia is a member of the New York Junior Holstein Association, 4-H and the Riding Right Farm Youth Dressage team. She is also on the indoor track team at Greenwich. Houser enjoys discussing and learning about dairy, along with working with children and animals. She hopes to continue her education after high school in the dairy science field. Houser is the daughter of George and Ruth Houser of Easton. The Houser family owns Brotherhood Farms, a 360-cow dairy farm with Holstein and Jersey cows. Julia will be joined by First Alternate Sara Stein, of Easton, and Dairy Ambassadors at some fair events.

Rodeo returns to the fair Tuesday The Painted Pony Rodeo is proud to be back at the fairgrounds this year at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Motor Sports Arena. The area’s best cowboys and cowgirls will compete at the rodeo, vying for thousands of dollars in prize money, along with a gold championship belt buckle, provided by Cormie Agency. “We are excited to be a part of the fair once again,” said Shana Graham of Painted Pony Rodeo. “It’s a very exciting event and our fans will see an outstanding show.” This year’s events include bronc riding, bareback riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, calf roping, team roping and of course bull riding, which continues to be a fair-favorite. Also, breakaway roping will be added for the first time in this year’s main event. All the action will include a rodeo clown and trick riders, both sure to be crowdpleasers. Aside from the professional rodeo event, the “slack” event, featuring additional contestants, will take place at 2 p.m. at the Motor Sports Arena on Tuesday. Painted Pony Rodeo comes to the fairgrounds from Lake Luzerne. The rodeo is sanctioned by the International Professional Rodeo Association (IPRA) and the American Professional Rodeo Association (APRA). The state agriculture commission has lifted the ban on all live fowl competitions and displays at county fairs in New York State. The 2015 ban was the state’s approach to preventing the avian flu from spreading here. It was an aggressive measure and it paid off, thanks to the cooperation of farmers and exhibitors. The state continues to routinely test poultry for avian flu. Many fairgoers said they missed the poultry show at last year’s fair and youngsters of all ages missed the opportunity to pet baby chickens and ducks. Ducks and chicks will be back in the FFA Farmland and in the poultry barn.

Fairgrounds home to more than fair Every year thousands of people flock to the Washington County Fair to revel in the joy and entertainment of fair week. It’s estimated upward of 120,000 people filter through the turnstiles every August. But there’s a lot more happening at the fairgrounds than just the fair itself. While no other single event can boast of such large crowds, the fairgrounds remain a busy place throughout the year. For seven months of the year, from April through October, the fairgrounds play host to a variety of notable events. The Washington County Antique Fair and Flea Market spends two weekends a year at the fairgrounds— the first weekends in May and August—and features more than 200 vendors from throughout the United States and Canada. Dealers sell a variety of rare antiques, hard to find collectibles and a myriad of crafts. And because the show is traditional-

ly held a week before the Brimfield, Mass., antique show, there are many items that appear for sale for the first time. The 2017 shows will be held the first weekend in May, and the first weekend in August and feature vendors in both indoor and outdoor venues. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. There is also an “early buyer” pass, which gives guests access to the show during setup on Friday. To learn more visit fairgroundshows.com. For the past four years the fairgrounds have hosted the Southern Adirondack Fiber Festival, a two-day celebration featuring more than 120 vendors from throughout the Northeast. The weekend includes workshops, demonstrations, livestock shows and much more. This year’s event will be held on Sept. 24 & 25. For more information, visit adkfiber.com.

Other notable events held at the fairgrounds are the Tour of the Battenkill, America’s largest one-day Pro/Am cycling race, and the Friends of The Washington County Grasslands IBA (Important Bird Area) Winter Raptor Festival. The fairgrounds also host a number of smaller events by local groups and organizations. Horse, cow and rabbit shows, dog agility trials, livestock sales and other agricultural events are held there throughout the year. Local Scout groups and 4H clubs often hold events at the fairgrounds, and the Washington County Seniors held their annual picnic there last month. The grounds are also available for family reunions, wedding receptions, corporate events, fundraisers and other private events. To learn more about the events held at the fairgrounds or to inquire how you could hold your own event, visit washingtoncountyfair.com.

Washington County Craft Beverage Corral and Tasting Washington County Craft Beverage Producers will host a pilot tasting event in the County Bounty Building from 4:00 - 8:00 PM on Tuesday.

Where: County Bounty When: Tuesday, 4 pm to 8 pm Participants are limited to Washington County Craft Beverage producers; consisting of four wineries, three breweries, one distillery, and one cidery. Gerry Barnhart of Victory View Vineyards and Christopher Castrio from Argyle Brewing met with members of the Washington County Fair to discuss ways to showcase the region’s

growth in the craft beverage industry, and their impact on Washington County agriculture in the “farm-to-glass” movement. “We believe there is real potential to expand this event in the future if we do a good job with the pilot this year,” said Castrio. “We do need to be very sensitive to the Fair’s long-standing no alcohol policy and family focus. We are confident we can do a good job with the pilot by pooling our resources and working together.” The fair is pleased to be able to include this aspect of the county’s agriculture. A tasting corral will be created, with ID check station and wristbands. No other on-site consumption is permitted.
