She then followed her statement with an urgent question, “Do you know your neighbor?” Fair Haven Concerned can answer that with a resounding “yes.” The organization, established in 1983 as part of the United Way of Rutland County, has been helping its neighbors in and around Fair Haven by providing food to fill bare cupboards and fuel to heat cold rooms. But there was more they knew they could do. In 2015, after surveying the community asking what other needs there were in the area, they opened The Second Chance Thrift Shop on Main

Street in Fair Haven. “It was clear by the responses we were on track with providing food and fuel, but there was more we could do. There was a need for a place where people could get affordable clothing,” said Ashley Bride, executive director. Since opening its doors in February 2016, the shop has recirculated an estimated three tons of new and used clothing in western Rutland County, eastern Washington County of New York and beyond. The shop also serves another purpose that is often forgotten in the world the non-profit. “Second Chance Thrift Shop helps Fair Haven Concerned cover some of its G

operational expenses,” Bride said, a much-needed boost to the budget as grant money dwindles, leading those awarding non-profits to add a caveat to the check. That is, monies granted cannot be used for operational costs. “There is still a need for covering those costs,” Bride said. “And the store has become a valued part of our mission as we reach more of our neighbors with food, fuel and now clothing.” Fair Haven Concerned moved to its Main Street location, where the store is also located, in 2015, elevating public awareness in the community. The organization provides such crucial services as health care, emotional support and advocacy, shelter, food, clothing, budgeting, emergency funds, transportation and hope for the holidays. All services of the Fair Haven Concerned are available to anyone in Fair Haven or West Haven free of charge, regardless of social status, creed, race, age or any other difference. Throughout the year, Fair Haven concerned does various fundraisers and charitable events, so anyone who is interested in helping the organization can do so by participating in any of these events. on the group’s Facebook page “Fair Haven Concerned, Inc.” Fair Haven Concerned also works with various organizations and businesses throughout the year to put on other community-oriented events. The organization recently teamed up with Shaw’s in which the grocer donated bags for The Second Chance Thrift Shop’s “fill a bag” event. Shoppers were invited to take a Shaw’s bag and fill it with items all for just $7, Bride said. Fair Haven Concerned will once again be teaming up with the American Legion in hosting an Easter event for families. Bride is hoping to top last year’s whopping 3,000 eggs that were hunted by the children. And when prom season comes around, the thrift shop is a place where teenage girls can find affordable gowns. Last year, the store also gave away gift certificates to local nail salons and hair dressers during prom season. “We really can’t thank all the community groups and businesses enough for all their help and support,” Bride said. Spring Fling kicks off Memorial Day in Fair Haven It’s late spring and the leaves have come out on the trees. The vegetable gardens have been planted. The smell of lilacs is in the air. American flags have also start appearing on the lawns of homes and businesses, reminding all that Memorial Day is just about here. And that can only mean one thing. It’s Spring Fling time in Fair Haven. Organized by the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce the 2017 Spring Fling will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 27 on the Fair Haven Town Green. The event is held concurrently with the Memorial Day parade. Always a great turnout for the community, Spring Fling has hosted in the past up to 40 vendors. The Chamber hopes that number to grow this year. Offerings have included carnival type games, food vendors selling hamburgers, French fries, snow cones and more, arts and crafts vendors offering everything from hand-made jewelry to wooden toys, as well as others. There are also many

local groups with tables, such as the Cub Scouts and the Fair Haven Historical Society. And to whet your appetites even more, the Fair Haven Rotary traditionally holds a chicken barbeque. Volunteers from the Chamber, which has about 45 members, begin setting up for the Spring Fling early in the morning, with vendors showing up soon afterward to put the finishing touches on their displays. Throughout the day, hundreds of people drop by and wander through the Green,

taking in the sights, buying a trinket or two, snacking on a yummy treat and, chances are good, especially in a small community, those attending find themselves catching up with neighbors and friends. In the early afternoon, attention turns to the Memorial Day parade, organized by the local American Legion Post #49. The parade begins immediately after a ceremony honoring this nation’s veterans, which is held at the memorial at the intersection of Main and Washington Streets. It begins

and ends here and usually starts at around 1:30 p.m. In past years, the parade has featured marchers from the local fire department and Little League teams. Old cars have also graced the parade route, ushering in the unofficial start of summer in Fair Haven style. For further information about Spring Fling, contact the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce at 802-265-8600 or check out their web site at http://www.vtlakesregionchamber.org. “A Small Town, But A Big Part Of America” You knew that Ethan Allen and eighty Green Mountain Boys captured Fort Ticonderoga from the British in 1775, sparking a positive “can-do” attitude among and throughout the citizens of what would soon become America. Ethan and his men celebrated by liberating the British stock of rum at the Fort, and celebrated for several hours thereafter. But, did you know that Fair Haven’s own Mathew Lyon appeared at the Fort the next day after the capture, over loaded and touched off a thirteen pound cannon that awoke the drunken most rebel soldier and brought him to his feet. The blast could be heard for several miles. I am happy to work in an atmosphere of that type of energy and heritage. I fly the American Flag proudly...in my front window or at my desk. Fair Haven is a place of industry, commerce, agriculture and business. Applefest: Fun for a good cause Fuji. Gala. Macintosh. Cortland. Honeycrisp. Granny Smith. September is apple season and nowhere better than Fair Haven’s Applefest to celebrate the tasty fruit that famously (or infamously) hung from Eden’s Tree of Knowledge. For more than 30 years, Applefest has offered residents an opportunity to sample everything from freshly squeezed cider to hot out-of-the-oven pie – and everything apple in between. This year’s festival is Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Applefest is a fundraiser for the children at the Fair

Haven Elementary School – raising an average of $3,000. The money is divided among the grades at the school and used for class trips and other school projects. Applefest attracts about 40 vendors every year. It includes a lot of arts and crafts, such as jewelry, and plenty of food items from fresh apples and cider from the local orchards to fried dough. Volunteers, largely drawn from the grade school, also sell

refreshments such as hamburgers, hot dogs and soft drinks, while many of the FHGS children offer activities. While organizers are still fine-tuning this year’s Applefest, attendees can expect fun for the whole family. For example, two years ago, a popular activity included was a variation on a dunk tank called the “balloon bust,” where participants tossed balls at waterfilled balloons and soaked a

brave volunteer. Another popular offering at Applefest is the “cake wheel.” There participants can take a spin to win any one of the tempting homemade cakes baked by parents and others in the community. The Fair Haven community comes out strong in support of Applefest with many local businesses donated much needed food and other items to the event. For more information about the Applefest, contact Patty Roberts or Lorna Morrison at the Fair Haven Grade School at (802) 2653883. You can also email Lorna at lmorrison@arsu. org.

Fair Haven Summer Concerts in the Park Small town concerts have become numerous and popular throughout Vermont in the summer months and Fair Haven’s spacious town green offers the perfect venue for such an event. This year’s Fair Haven Concerts in the Park will be held every Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. for 10 weeks, from June 15 until Aug. 17. The concerts are a favorite summertime activity, attracting folks from Fair Haven and beyond. “The audiences last year averaged around 350,” said Concert Series Committee member Scott Lobdell of Castleton. “Some concerts have more attendees than others because of weather conditions. On a good

weather night we almost run out of parking.” In case of rain, Lobdell said, attendees can take refuge in the Baptist church where the concerts will then be held. The committee, which was established a few years ago to help stabilize and grow the concerts, decided in 2015 to move the start date of the concerts earlier in the summer to take advantage of more daylight at both ends of the series. “That worked out really well and we’re continuing with that,” noted Lobdell. The Fair Haven Concerts have become well-established in the area as a destination point, largely due to the efforts of the committee

to attract more sponsors who in turn attract more entertainment. The concerts are free, with each concert-goer given a free door prize ticket. Prizes are drawn during intermission. There is also a 50-50 raffle that is drawn after the door prizes are all gone, Lobdell said. In addition to music and prizes, hot dogs, popcorn, water and soda are for sale. “The money raised helps support Dodge House (for homeless veterans) and also goes toward awarding a $2,000 scholarship to a graduating Fair Haven Union High School student who is going to college to study music,” Lobdell said. The concerts feature a

wide range of music to suit most tastes and draws heavily from local talent. It includes honky-tonk, country-western, bluegrass and Celtic/Irish as well as Big Band, classic 60’s and 70’s popular music and jazz vocalists. The committee likes to rotate in new talent each year while also offering repeats of particularly popular acts. New to the concert series are Limbo Lounge, Catamout Crossing, Blue Jay Way, and Starline Rhythm Boys, who are returning after a year hiatus. The schedule of performances for 2017 includes: June 15—Onion River Jazz Band June 22—Starline

Fair Haven Classic Auto Show set for July The classic car market is a hot one, with novices and connoisseurs alike making pilgrimages to metal meccas all around the country. Luckily for Vermonters, one such mecca of antique and classic metal is right in their own backyard. For the past 12 years, the Vermont Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce has sponsored the Fair Haven Classic Auto Show the last Sunday in July. This year’s show, held at Fair Haven’s Town Green, takes place July 29, with registration beginning at 9 a.m. and judging starting at 1 p.m. Kerry Fowler, Chamber of Commerce president, said those coming can expect to see more than 100 vehicles. “We started with just a

few cars at first and each year it just kept getting bigger and bigger,” Fowler said. Classic cars, though, aren’t the only thing on display. “We also have motorcycles and tractors,” he said, adding that in the past there have been everything from Model T’s to muscle cars to fancy newer makes and models.

“We’ve even had some real old farm tractors and cars that have been modified,” Fowler said. The event is free and open to all. In addition to cars, tractors and motorcycles, there will be live music to entertain visitors. By early afternoon, Fowler said, the judging is wrapped up and the Top 25 cars are named, including who won

the coveted Best in Show honor. “We also try to do a people’s choice award,” Fowler said. While a Vermont event, Fowler said car enthusiasts from all over come and they come as far north as Ticonderoga and Glens Falls in New York. With people circling their calendars for the end of July in anticipation of the auto show, Fowler is hoping for the sun to shine as it has always done. “We’ve had some misty weather in the past, but it’s always been a good day. We are hoping for good weather again as we celebrate our twelfth year,” he said. For more information, call Kerry Fowler at 802-345-0921.

Historical Society brings town together Percy Bysshe Shelley, considered one of the epic poets of the 19th century who penned such works as “Ode to the West Wind” and “The Masque of Anarchy,” viewed history as a cyclic poem written by time upon the memories of man. Fair Haven has a poem not

only written upon memories of its earliest residents, but has those memories lovingly preserved by the dedicated members of its historical society, whose mission on its page on the Fair Haven town website says it all: to bring together people interested in history and the Town of Fair

Haven. The society, led by president Mary McNeil, houses an extensive collection of books, scrapbooks, magazines, photos, newspapers and artifacts in its offices at the Fair Haven Municipal Building. There are also town records

and genealogical files for those searching for information on long-lost relatives or to see where a dear great-great grandparent was born or buried. Or perhaps one is searching to see whether they are related to any of Fair Haven’s colorful characters, such as shop owner

Nathan Durkee, who is mentioned in “A History of Fair Haven, Vermont” to have advertised in 1798 that he “has lately received, and is now selling, at his store in Fair Haven, at the corner opposite Brown’s Tavern, a small assortment of English and India goods, for cash, country produce or ashes.” While preserving Fair Haven’s long and rich history – the town received its charter

from the General Assembly of the state meeting in Manchester on Oct. 27, 1779 – the society is active in present history-making events, participating in such events as the Spring Fling in May, Welcome Center Expo in June and Applefest in the fall. Each summer, the society cosponsors Local History Day with the Fair Haven Farmers’ Market. They also have held annual teas for senior citizens and celebrate

Charter Day in October. Board meetings are usually held on the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. and the society publishes a quarterly newsletter, “Slate of Historic Events Past and Present.” Those interested in having a souvenir of Fair Haven’s history can stop at the society’s office and purchase books, postcards, notecards, mugs and sweatshirts. All proceeds support the work of

the society. A campaign is currently under way to raise money to replace the wooden posts surrounding the Fair Haven Park with marble posts. For more information on the marble posts or how to become a member of the Fair Haven Historical Society, call 802-contact the Fair Haven Historical Society at 802-265-3010 or visit fhvthistory@gmail.com.
