Follow the link to “Browse Resources by Topic…” to reach a button for “The Avid Gardener” – articles chosen for hobbyists as well as farmers and landscape architects. Sign up for a free, self-paced online class for those rainy days when you can’t get out in the dirt. Have your library card in hand to sign up for Universal Class following the link on the bottom of our webpage (call us if you can’t find your card or need assistance – 468-5574). Besides a basic “Introduction to Gardening,” other current offerings include courses on landscaping, herbs, floral arranging, and preserving food. For fair weather, we’ve been working on our outdoor areas –

the garden beds, vegetable patch, and seating areas around the library. Climbing vines have been planted on our pergola, a structure built and donated by awesome Eagle Scout Eric Ray, and we have new benches on the way for readers, relaxers, and wifi users. Many thanks to the volunteer crew from Fellowship Bible Church who cleaned up our lawns and tilled our garden on the “Day in the Dirt” last month! This year’s garden will feature small themed beds, including a pollinator patch and children’s garden, and we hope to continue Meg’s tradition of veggie giveaways at the front desk. But our main goal is to inspire conversation (like the heated rant about tomato hornworms overheard this morning). Oh, and for you other sixpack people, we have some home brewing books on order.

Wells school hosting art show tonight The Wells Village School will host an art celebration Friday, June 2 from 5-9 p.m. at the school. School officials have converted the multi-purpose room into an art gallery for the evening. The gallery will display art from K-6 students from Wells, Middletown Springs and Poultney. There will also be music, dancing and entertainment. There also will be “arty bowls” for sale with choices of crockpot soups.

And for more yard sale action, the Baptist Church on the Green in East Poultney will be offering household items, clothing and games at low prices on June 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The tours are open to all ages and comfortable shoes are suggested for the 45-minute walk. “It’s easy, you only need to show up with a smile and a little energy for walking,” said Molly Biggs Celani, president of the Slate Valley Museum board. “The exercise and fresh air are good for you. You get to meet people with similar interests while listening to stories making slate architectural use come alive.” At the museum, children and art enthusiasts alike can enjoy a local map-crafting activity. Refreshments will also be available. For more information call Rupe at 518-642-1417. Also during First Friday, the Pember Museum will be featuring Moose Crossing, a jazz band from Poultney, Vermont. Obituary

Card of Thanks

Wesley D. Sawyer Jr. Wesley D. Sawyer Jr., Weybridge, Vermont, died Sunday evening May 21, 2017 at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. He was 89 years old. He was born February 13, 1928 in Stamford, Connecticut, the son of Wesley and Sophie (Hasler) Sawyer. Wes spent his early years on Rock Rimmon Poultry Farm in Stamford, which he owned and operated with his father and mother. After his marriage in 1952 to Barbara Joan Thomas, he worked as a poultry man/caretaker at Doral Farms Estate in Stamford. Later on, Wes joined Pound Ridge Nurseries in Pound Ridge, New York, learning the nursery business and moving on to become garden shop superintendent. In 1971 he and his wife Barbara moved up to Vermont, where they owned and operated Rockrimmon Garden Shoppe in Poultney for several years. In 1977, Wes joined the team at Breadloaf Construction in Middlebury, Vermont, where he worked construction and later on became shop superintendent. He retired from Breadloaf in 1999. After retirement, Wes became a full time, at-home gardener at Old Lake Road in Poultney, where he and Barbara maintained extensive

vegetable and flower gardens. After selling their home of 39 years, Wes and Barbara moved into their new home in Weybridge, Vermont in 2016. He was a veteran member of the Long Ridge Fire Department in Long Ridge, Stamford, Connecticut. Wes was a hard-working soul who thoroughly enjoyed his family, along with sports, music, stamp-collecting, road trips and just being outdoors building and planting things. He made the world a more beautiful place. He is survived by his wife Barbara Sawyer of Weybridge, by his daughters, Suzanne Sawyer and husband Jay Leshinsky, of Middlebury and Nancy Sawyer of Cornwall, by his son W. David Sawyer of Poultney, by his sister Mary Clark of Pound Ridge, New York and by his grandchildren, Arianna and Dimitry, Amber, Alex, Zachary, Allison and Jack, by his great grandson Rafael and another great grandchild due this spring (along with three step great grandsons Isaac, Sebastion and Javin), and many nieces and nephews as well as his constant and devoted companion, ‘Hallie.’ He was predeceased by his brother Crosby Sawyer in 2009 and his grandson James Forrest Sawyer in 2007.

Twig Remembers Harold White Harold White was a fiddler. Now, there were several good fiddlers to come out of West Haven and Benson – Elwin Corey, Freeman Corey and Hollis Bartholomew. Elwin, when I heard him, was a sit-down guy and oh could he go. Freeman was stand-up but not stand still. He would dance around and have a helluva time. Hollis was a stand-up guy because he was a caller at square dances. He’d tell good, clean jokes and always let us

Fair Haven Rotary celebrates members Fair Haven Rotary Club recently celebrated the upcoming graduation of its Rotaract Club members from Castleton University, with a dinner thrown in their honor. Five of the eight graduating seniors were present and awarded with custom “Rotaract” sashes as gifts to wear at graduation, which was May 13. Rotaract brings together adults ages 18-30 to take action in their communities, develop their leadership and professional skills, and have fun. Rotary clubs sponsor them, but Rotaract members manage and fund their clubs independently. The Castleton University Rotaract Club was chartered in 2013 and has been largely mentored by Rotarian Caren Helm, of Castleton. “It is with immense pride that all of us in the Fair

know when the show was over by singing in his deep, deep voice, “Show me the way to go home.” Now I never got to see Harold perform solo, but I did get to hear him in the Poultney 4th of July parade with the Adirondack Fiddlers. They’d be riding behind a truck on a platform and giving off some great sounds. Now if Harold was a part of that, then he was good. May God be with you, Harold White.

Bill Miller Every trip to Bill’s “Shamrock Video” in Bomoseen was an adventure. Bill and I would get yapping – “Twig do you like John Wayne?” “Have you ever seen ‘The Shootist’?” You’ll love it. Oh the jibber jabber would continue and I’m walking out with Travolta and Deniro – all great movies that he had viewed as he worked. Next time in – Hey Twig, I’ve

been saving this one for you. It’s a black & white put out in the early 70’s. It’s Kirk Douglas and he’s on the lamb with a horse he borrowed. It’s called “Lonely are the Brave.” He never gave me a dud. And once again I’d get an exciting story from his life as a police officer down by New York City. I miss those fun times, Bill. May God bless you!

Members of the Castleton University Rotaract Club, sponsored by Fair Haven Rotary, were honored at a recent dinner prior to graduation. Seniors pictured from left: Susan Gay, Shania Brown, Rosie Burke, Emily McColl and Danny Warnecke. Haven Rotary Club celebrate these fine young people. They have brought so much to CU and to our club. Through their community service locally and their mission trips thousands of miles away, they brought the face

of Rotary where it was needed most. They are all hard working, dedicated, generous and empathetic. They will all be missed tremendously,” said Jennifer Larson, president of the Fair Haven Rotary Club.

Outdoor event in Manchester Saturday The Downtown School, Manchester’s independent, progressive education day school, presents Shop-Play-Stay on Saturday, June 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine, at the school’s campus located at 106 Palmer Place in Manchester Center, just behind Ye Olde Tavern. The school invites everyone to enjoy carnival adventures and shopping for bargains. Activities will include games, music, crafts,

face-painting, a bouncy castle, prizes, raffles, food stalls, bake sale and a community consignment sale of kids’ clothing, toys and gear. If you are interested in consigning kids’ items for the consignment sale or learning more about the consignment sale, please visit www.thedowntownschool.org/consignment-sale. Admission to Shop-Play-Stay is free. Tickets will be available

for purchase to enjoy the carnival games and craft activities. All net proceeds benefit The Downtown School Scholarship Fund, which enables the school to provide financial assistance to eligible families interested in offering their children an opportunity to learn-by-doing in a progressive education environment. To learn more about The Downtown School, please visit www.thedowntownschool.org.

I would like to thank Skenesborough EMS and all area care providers. On May 7, 2011, I was involved in a serious motorcycle crash in Whitehall. I was airlifted to Dartmouth in critical condition. If it were not for the first people on the scene and excellent care I received on the way to Dartmouth, and the quality care at Dartmouth, I know my life would not be the same as it is today.

THANK YOU ALL! Bill Pearo

This year’s Rail Trail to the Footbridge 5K is Saturday, June 3.

Rail Trail 5K race Saturday By Krystle S. Morey The eighth annual running of the Rail Trail to the Footbridge 5K is this Saturday, June 3. A week before the starting gun was set to go off, 80 athletes had preregistered and more will likely sign up the day of the race, said Kerri Thomas, race founder and organizer. Last year, 124 runners competed, with athletes from as far as Arizona and Florida making the trek to Granville to run on the trail that the former Delaware & Hudson Railroad Company used to operate. “It’s amazing the people that come in for this race,” said Thomas. Racers compete for prizes such as custom Telescope director’s chairs and maple syrup products from Rathbun’s Maple Sugar House. All participants receive an engraved slate trivet donated by Sheldon Slate Company and etched by Earth and Time Studio. “A lot of these races, you get medals that are made in China, but for me, it’s been really important that our prizes be sourced locally to really showcase what we have to offer in our community,” Thomas said. Check-in and registration begin at 7 a.m. at the Slate Valley Museum. Runners are taken via bus – the last one leaves at 8:40 a.m. – to the race start on Andrews Lane and run the 3.12 miles back to the footbridge just outside the museum. The course takes participants through the Delaware & Hudson Rail Trail and various side streets in the village, passing by beautiful scenes such as the roaring Mettowee River and tree canopycovered trails. Following the race, there will

be a 1K Kids’ Fun Run and various snacks and refreshments available. All proceeds from the race are donated back into the community. In previous years, donations have been made to the Slate Valley Museum, Haynes House of Hope, the Pember Library and the Granville Little League. “We don’t really know where we are going to send it until we know how much we have,” Thomas said. The race has gained popularity and support from the community and several local businesses over the past eight years. Businesses including SaintGobain Performance Plastics, Telescope Casual Furniture, Sheldon Slate and Earth & Time Studio have supported the race with monetary and prize donations for years. “I am so blessed with the sponsorship that I have had,” Thomas said. “The success of the race has been so attributed to them. I couldn’t do it without them.” One of Thomas’ major focuses from now until race day is finding volunteers to help with everything from directing runners to manning water tables. Interested volunteers should call or email Kerri Thomas at 518-424-7683 or racedirector@railtrailtothefootbridge5k.com. Members of the Granville Police Department and Granville Rescue Squad will also be on-site on race day. Registration for the 5K is $20 and $5 for the kids’ 1K Fun Run. Athletes can register online at railtrailtothefootabridge5k.com or during packet pick-up – 7:308:30 a.m. at the Slate Valley Museum – on race day. The Slate Valley Museum is located at 17 Water St. in Granville.

The Benson First Response Team. During the 2015-16 fiscal year, Benson First Response responded to 52 calls for assistance, including mutual aid calls in neighboring West Haven, Fair Haven and Orwell. Benson First Response maintains an impressive array of lifesaving technology which prepares it for any type of illness or injury. While there are many challenges that EMS teams face, perhaps the

most daunting, especially for rural small-town squads, is membership. Benson First Response is always on the lookout for new members. EMS teams play a vital role in local communities, often being the first agency on the scene of an accident, fire or other emergency. To become an EMT, individuals must complete a six month EMT course which culminates in a nation-

al certification exam. Each year such a course is offered in Rutland at the Rutland Regional Medical Center. This year the course begins on Sept. 21 and runs through April 9. The cost to attend is $400. Interested parties should contact course coordinator Bill Mapes via email at billatras@ aol.com . This past year the first response team lost a longtime friend and advo-

cate, Sue Janssen, who worked tirelessly to support the mission of not only Benson First Response but the Benson Volunteer Fire Dept. As ever, the squad is immensely grateful for the continued support of the community including all the volunteers and donations, without which the Benson Fire Response would cease to exist.

We are thankful for all your dedication.

New headquarters makes responding easier The Castleton First Responders (CFR) have been settled in their new building, located at 233 Route 30, for just about two years now and the volunteer responders can’t speak highly enough of having their own space near the firehouse as well as a place to store their equipment and hold trainings. The unit’s field chief, Walter Ducharme, who has served with the CFR for two plus decades also pointed out that having their own headquarters also means that CFR volunteers will not have to operate out of their own homes or have to store their equipment at the Castleton Community Center. Still, while a place to call home is nice to have, it would be even better to have more “family members.” Ducharme said the CFR still faces a challenge that confronts all volunteer first responders and fire departments throughout the state: the need for more volunteers. 50 years of saving lives

Members of the Granville Rescue Squad. The Granville Rescue Squad has spent half a century saving lives in the Lakes Region. The squad was founded in 1967, as a demand for emergency medical transport emerged across the country. “The charter members used an early ambulance, housed in a member’s garage, to transport trauma victims to the local Granville hospital,” said Michael Zinn, assistant captain. Before too long, call volumes had surpassed 500 a year and demands were evident for emergency medicine in the village and surrounding towns. Throughout the 1970s, call volumes increased to more than 1,000 a year. Eventually, the fiscal reality of rural hospitals caught up to Granville and hospitals closed, turning into adult care facilities.

“This stretched the demands for GRS, in that hospitals could now only be found in Glens Falls, New York, Rutland, Vermont, Cambridge, New York and Bennington, Vermont,” Zinn said. Additionally, the residents in the adult care facilities now needed frequent transport to these hospitals. It’s come a long way in last 50 years. The squad purchased an adjoining property and house to the east of its main building on East Potter Avenue and a three-bay storage building was erected to house an ambulance, the MCI trailer, and off-road equipment. That project broke ground in 2013. After completion of this expansion, re-purposing of the existing truck bays to living quarters, and living quarters to office space was completed. Throughout the projects countless hours were contributed by volunteers to make the facilities project a success. Now the Granville squad has a fleet with five ambulances and a large facility on East Potter Avenue in Granville. The agency has grown from a single garage to a multi-bay facility with all the amenities of home including a kitchen, bedroom, and living quarters. It also added a meeting/training room and office to meet the demands for all the training that was needed to provide adequate care. “Membership throughout the years has stayed pretty much the same as far as the number of volunteers,” Zinn said. Throughout the 1990s call volumes increased and volunteers became harder to find. “Late in the ‘90s, it was evident that GRS needed monetary assistance,” Zinn said. Insurance billing was an easy income supplement to the income of the squad, he said. With the assistance from insurance billing, the squad was able to

increase its equipment capabilities. The squad increased its fleet of ambulances to four In 1998 With more volunteers working daily, the squad was forced to begin a daytime paid staff in 2001 to ensure coverage and fast response times. Also this year, the squad built an addition in order to house all four ambulances in the Granville station. The squad worked throughout the first decade of this century improving equipment, adding a snowmobile, ATV, and trailers, as well as an MCI trailer. Technology has changed dramatically: In the late ‘60s there were no AED or heart monitors onboard the ambulances, whereas today a heart monitor is used on virtually every call. Training requirements have also increased throughout the years. “When the squad was first formed there were minimal training requirements whereas today there are hundreds of hours of training necessary for those wishing to become state-certified,” Zinn said. The agency increased numbers of ALS Certified individuals, and hosted several state classes to ensure proper training. Paid staffing coverage hours increased and included overnights to supplement volunteer coverage. “We try to look to the future of rural EMS and stay ahead of the curve in new treatments and equipment to provide the best care to our local residents,” Zinn said. Those interested in volunteering should stop by the squad building on East Potter Avenue. Zinn said he’s anticipating openings for a few paid opportunities for daytime EMTs. Anyone 16 or older can apply. Zinn said the squad always accepts donations. Those should be sent to P.O. Box 153, Granville.

Both are volunteer organizations. “We provide fast first aid; we quickly assess and package the patient,” said Kevin Eaton, recording secretary and assistant training officer. “Then Poultney picks up the patient and transports them to the nearest hospital (Rutland Regional Medical Center).” Eaton noted that members of both the Poultney and Middletown Springs’ squads have the same level of training. The only difference is that Middletown Springs does not transport patients. In 2016, Middletown Springs First Response handled 47 calls. 2017 Roster

Skenesborough EMS celebrates 50 years

Captain Brandon Sparks, EMT Assistant Captain George Card, EMT Rachel Jones, EMT Patty Kasuba, EMT Stan Kasuba, EMT Tammy Bunker, Driver Thomas Bennett, Driver Daniel Pitts, EMT Richard Long, EMT John Hoogeveen Paramedic (paid staff)

This year marks the 50th anniversary for Skenesborough EMS and to celebrate the squad will open its doors to the public on Memorial Day. Tours of the squad building, ambulances as well as photographs taken over the past 50 years will offer a glimpse into the history of the organization. Guests will also learn how to join and become an EMT. At this time the squad has 23 full-time volunteers and a handful of paid members. Of the 23 volunteers, only seven are EMT’s. “We are always short members and always looking for new members,” said Brandon Sparks, captain of the Skenesborough EMS. The paid members of the squad are typically firemen from Glens Falls who drive to Whitehall to work on their days off and are certified EMT’s, Critical Care Technicians or paramedics. There is one paid member on duty each day and they work 12 – 16 hour shifts. Since last year the squad has been able to add a new Stryker power lift stretcher because of generous donations from the community. “From last year’s annual donation letter sent out in July 2016 we raised over $9,000 and our coin drop raised around $6,000; which basically paid for our new power stretcher,” Sparks said. Fortunately, the number of calls has lessened since the previous year, giving the squad a bit of a break. In 2016 there were 681 medical calls compared with 758 in 2015. So far this year the squad has

Members of the Skenesborough Emergency Squad. responded to 220 calls. In addition to the new equipment, the squad was able to give their building a facelift, applying fresh paint inside and out as well as new carpeting and flooring and some general maintenance. Skenesborough EMS isn’t alone in responding to local calls. Washington County will dispatch both Skenesborough and Whitehall First Response to calls within the village and town. When responding to a call in Dresden, they receive assistance from the Dresden Volunteer Fire Department. In Huletts Landing the squad gets support from Huletts Landing Volunteer Fire. “Huletts fire department is amazing at helping us out when there is a call in Huletts Landing,” Sparks said.

Several of the members act as drivers for the squad. Sparks said that anyone interested in becoming a driver must be 21 years old, as required by the squad’s insurance company, have a valid driver’s license and have a minimum of three years of driving experience. Aside from the open house this Memorial Day, there are several methods to join the squad. Prospects can swing by the squad building on Skenesborough Drive and pick up an application, call the building at 499-2122 or message them on Facebook at Skenesborough Emergency Squad Inc. Active members have to commit a minimum of 12 hours of scheduled duty time per month, Sparks said.
