Concert Continued from front page 1998 by 3 professional musicians, The Starline Rhythm Boys are a full time, actively booked drummerless trio consisting of Danny Coane (“Little Danny C”) on acoustic rhythm guitar, Big Al Lemery on electric lead guitar and Billy (“Slappin’ Billy B”) Bratcher on acoustic upright “slap” bass. They perform vintage country, honky-tonk and rockabilly music with very strong country harmony duet vocals. Their repertoire consists of many superb originals, mainly written by Bratcher, as well as great covers of both classic and obscure numbers. The Starline Rhythm Boys are artists signed to Cow Island Music, an independent “Americana” label, as well as Coles Meadow Music Publishing, based in Northampton, Massachusetts.

The concerts are free, with each concert-goer given a free door prize ticket. Prizes are drawn during intermission. There is also a 50-50 raffle that is drawn after the door prizes are all gone. In addition to music and prizes, hot dogs, popcorn, water and soda are for sale. TOWN OF POULTNEY PUBLIC HEARING Thursday, June 27, 2017 - 6:30 PM Poultney High School Gymnasium Notice is hereby given that the Poultney Planning Commission will hold a Public Hearing on June 27, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at the Poultney High School Gymnasium, 154 East Main Street, Poultney, VT, pursuant to a Petition submitted to the Planning Commission, to take public comments on and to consider for approval and submission to the Selectboard revisions, amendments, and/or repeals, to the Poultney Unified Bylaws, specific to Sections 417: Slate Mining, Section 418: Slate Processing, and Section 1424: Site Development. The Poultney Planning Commission may also consider other general updates and revisions to the Poultney Unified Bylaws at the same hearing. The full text of the Poultney Unified Bylaws is available for public review at the Town Office.

Church Continued from front page deeply connected to the Slate Valley region, will once again be heard as Welsh hymns will be sung and the common liturgical prefaces – such as Arglwydd gyda chi. A hefyd gyda chi—translation: The Lord be with you. And also with you – will be recited. Prayers and scripture lessons will also be read in Welsh. Nia Davies Demiray, a native of Aberystwyth, Wales, and a member of the Poultney Area St. David’s Society, will be the lector. English translations will be printed in the worship bulletins for congregants to follow along, said Rev. William A. Davidson. “There is just a spark in the Welsh people that gets tapped when they come together at a service like this to sing and pray,” Davidson said. Davidson, pastor of St. Paul’s in Wells for the past nine years, has participated in the Annual Welsh Heritage Evening Prayer service since its inception four years ago. The service is opened to all, not just those of Welsh heritage. Davidson said the service is an important connection to the past for the Lakes Region, and Granville, New York, which has a “deep relationship” with

Wales thanks to the immigrants who came over from the Celtic country in the mid-19th century to work in the slate quarries. Slate quarry know-how, though, wasn’t the only thing the Welsh immigrants brought with them. They also brought their love of singing. “The church has some wonderful hymns of Welsh origins,” Davidson said. And just as the moving, beloved African American spirituals were born out of strife and hardships, the love of singing among the Welsh, too, was encouraged by the hardships they faced. “It was not an easy life— there or here,” Davidson said. “If you visit the Slate Valley Museum (in Granville) you can see the tough conditions they lived in. Singing was their time to give thanks and praise.” Making the Welsh music come to life will be James Cassarino, director of Welsh heritage and professor of music at Green Mountain College in Poultney, who, said Davidson, has spent much time in Wales getting to know the tunes well. As the Welsh-speaking residents in the area dwindle, the service also serves to encourage a future generation to carry on the traditions and keep the native tongue alive. Davidson noted that while a Welsh language revival has yet to come to the Lakes Region,

there is a revival taking place across the ocean and not just in Wales. In Ireland and Scotland, he said, the Welsh language is being taught more once again. “There is an interest in keeping the language alive,” he said. The 2004 Welsh Language Use Survey showed that 21.7 percent of the population of Wales spoke Welsh, compared with 20.8 percent in the 2001 census, and 18.5 percent in 1991. St. John’s Church is located on Route 140 in East Poultney. Untouched and unchanged, it is one of two churches from the early 1800’s surviving in the village. Located across from the village green, which is dominated by the United Baptist Church, St. John’s is an example of classic New England Carpenter Gothic. It retains its gated pews, kerosene lamps, stenciled walls and a rare, hand-pumped organ made by Vermonter William Nutting, dating from the 1840’s. The cornerstone of St. John’s was laid May 27, 1831. The first services were held a year later, May 27, 1832. The first Episcopal Bishop of Vermont, the Right Rev. John Henry Hopkins, presided at the consecration of the building. In addition to the June 10 service, there will be a Saturday prayer service on July 8 and Aug. 12. Both services begin at 4 p.m.

Essay winners tackle climate change The winners of the 2017 Hildene Lincoln Essay Competition were selected from 153 entries from Vermont eighth graders in 28 schools, from as far north as Grand Isle and as far south as Bennington. In the words of Hildene President, Seth Bongartz, “Using Abraham Lincoln’s legacy as touchstone, the goal of the competition is to promote awareness in the minds of a young generation of Americans of the responsibility each of us has to do our part to make our community, our state, our country and even our world a better place.” In the fall of 2016, application packets for the Hildene Lincoln Essay Competition were distributed to teachers of eighth grade English, history and social studies, and to librarian and homeschool networks statewide. Materials were also available online. Before taking on the 2017 challenge, students were reminded that in Abraham Lincoln’s first annual message to Congress, delivered on December 3, 1861, the he said, “The struggle of today, is not altogether for today – it is for a vast future also.” Lincoln, of course, referring to the Civil War, which had just erupted, knew that every decision he

made would have both positive and negative ramifications. In the 21st century, climate change is a major topic of debate, with events in the last year bringing the issue into even sharper focus. In this its eleventh year, the Lincoln Essay Competition challenged young Vermont writers to describe one action the United States could implement to substantially curb greenhouse gas emissions. The students were also asked to identify the likely positive and negative impacts such an action would have on one or more demographics. Finally, given these impacts, the students were asked if this was something the United States should do, and why or why not? Students were to answer in no more than 500 words. Blind judging was done by a panel of judges based on the content, the student’s understanding of the subject and her or his ability to convey that understanding using good writing practices including style, composition, grammar and factual accuracy. Hildene applauds all who participated in the competition for their ideas for addressing climate change. These ideas ran the gamut from the increased use of renewable energy to a man-

datory a federal carbon tax; generators and barrages in the ocean to harness tidal energy to the building of more nuclear power plants; mandatory education in schools about climate change to hydrogen-powered vehicles; giga-factories to produce batteries to supply all the world’s energy needs to reducing beef consumption and increasing cultured meat production and more. This year’s winners were: Elyse Martin-Smith, of Charlotte, first place prize of $1,000; Liam Halstead, of Dorset, second place prize of $750; and Alex Wick, of Burlington, third place prize of $500. Honorable mentions winning $200 each were: Grace DiStasio of Londonderry; Sage Freeman, of Stratton; Valentine Giesey, of Dorset; Anna Huener, of Burlington; Luisa Louchheim, of Charlotte; Jade Marantz, of Dorset; Courtney McDermott, of Charlotte; Madison Shepard, of Bristol; and Ruby Wool, of Burlington. Winners were honored at a luncheon hosted by Hildene at the Lincoln Family Home on Sunday, May 21. Winning essays are online at www. hildene.org.

New executive director to lead Merck Forest On March 20 Austin Chinn, president of Merck Forest and Farmland Center’s Board of Trustees, announced the appointment of Robert M. Terry as executive director, replacing retiring director Tom Ward. Terry, an experienced organizational leader and place-based educator, comes to Merck from the Student Conservation Association where he served as the vice president of national programs. An educator by training, with a masters in education from New England College, he has deep experience developing programs and curriculum, teaching and training educators in both wilderness programs and public schools. Through his recent work, Terry has focused on helping the conservation movement realign its principles and practices to be more inclusive of, and ultimately relevant to, devel-

The Center’s

working farm and forest, diverse ecology and expansive recreational offerings afford visitors a rich network of opportunities for personal growth and reflection. I look forward to collaborating with staff, volunteers, and the community to provide visitors from near and far with opportunities to learn about, explore and develop a lifelong love of the natural world.” Chinn characterized the search for a new executive director as long, exhaustive and “unprecedented” in the 64-year history of Merck. Terry, though, Chinn said, brings a set of skills that will raise Merck Forest to a new level of statewide, regional and even national significance. “Rob is a real outdoorsman, with a deep love of landscape and learning. We all welcome him enthusiastically to guide us into the future,” Chinn said.

They worked side-by-side for years fixing any and every broken part or machines that needed fixing. In the 1960’s, Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven opened and Jimmy was really in demand as he was rebuilding and calibrating the stock cars to make them faster and safer and more durable. Car rally in Granville tomorrow By Krystle S. Morey Classic cars, tricked-out trucks and magnificent motorbikes will be on display this Saturday at the Penhryn Engine and Hose Company’s 2017 Car Rally and Lake Cruise in Middle Granville. “There’s a mixture of the old and new,” said Nick Crouch, volunteer firefighter and show committee member. Enthusiasts come from communities across the region, including Granville, Rutland, Hudson Falls and Greenwich, to view and show cars. Last year, more than 50 vehicles were displayed, Crouch said. All are invited to show up – and show off their toys. “Anyone can bring a car, or whatever they want to show,” Crouch said, adding that motorcycles, tractors, rickshaws, airplanes and other vehicles are welcome. The entry fee to show a vehicle is $10. Admission to view the cars on display is $3. Children under 6 are free. All proceeds will go to the fire company. “This is our big fundraiser,” Crouch said. The fire company also hosts a series of bake sales and a haunted house each year

to raise money. Penhryn will use the funds it raises from the car rally to purchase new gear and equipment, and to pay for utility costs, and building and truck upkeep, he said. “There are new radios we need to purchase,” Crouch said. The radios will be installed in each of the fire company’s trucks: two engines, a tanker and a brush truck. This is the 11th year Penrhyn has hosted its car rally fundraiser at the fire company’s carnival grounds on

County Route 24 in Middle Granville, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. A rain date of Sunday, June 11, has been set. There will be food, music, prizes and a 50/50 raffle at the event. Car hop tunes from the 1950s and ‘60s will be played by One Smooth DJ. New this year, the fire company added a Lake Cruise prior to the rally. Vehicles will circle Lake St. Catherine in Vermont, starting at 3:30 p.m. Cruise participants should be at the carnival lot at 3 p.m. Participation in the cruise is free.

Back when I was a nightly member of Stewart’s Store, “Knights of the Round Table,” little Bunk, as I always called her, was a regular at the store as she lived just up the street. She always had a lot of spunk for such a tiny little gal. May God be with you, Janice (Bunker) Daniels.

all there was to know about the engine in Pete’s new street rod. I had to turn to my eight years as a barkeep where I had learned how to keep a conversation going. What a great day as we travelled back to the days of Andy Granatelli and Parnelli Jones. Note – back in the late 1950’s something great happened for the kids on the south side of Fair Haven when Wynne and Ginny Wood opened Fairwood Lanes on South Main Street. All kinds of south side kids became these really good bowlers as they were always down there. Jimmy Hyde was one of them – he was an excellent bowler and the bowling alley was always right next door. God bless you, Jim. It’s been a great 60 years.
