Books Continued from front page Hermit Hill is it, shelving more than 30,000 used, rare and collectible volumes in the “aisles and alcoves of its snug” shop on Main Street. Perhaps, too, the editors were wooed by Homer, the shop’s literary corgi, and his fellow canine and feline staffers that are always on hand to greet shoppers. Or perhaps the editors selected Hermit Hill as one of New England’s best places to visit because of the selection of books that owner Patty McWilliams takes pride in. Book topics shoppers will find include history, poetry, nature, Vermontiana and many modern first editions. And if one cannot find a rare book, McWilliams is more than happy to go on the hunt for it. For McWilliams, receiving this title is an honor. “I was very excited about and honored by ‘Yankee’ magazine’s recognition of my shop,” she said. “’Yankee’ is a respected magazine and goes out to subscribers throughout the United States. I’m hoping that it will bring a lot of their readers to Poultney and to my shop.” The recognition comes also as Hermit Hill Books celebrates 20 years in business, having first opened in February 1997 in Middletown Springs. After “quickly outgrowing” that store,

McWilliams moved into the Green Mountain College town of Poultney and opened the doors to its current 1870s storefront on Sept. 1, 2001. “We have two spacious rooms with many nooks and crannies that encourage quiet browsing for the book collector or the casual reader,” McWilliams touts on her website. As for staff, well, that includes the furry salespeople “Yankee” magazine editors noted in their review. “Our staff includes Tucker, the literary corgi, and Harriet, the official greeter,” McWilliams said. With thousands of books already lining the shelves, McWilliams admits she is always looking to increase the store’s stock and is “happy to purchase small bag of books or an entire library.” The store’s website – hermithillbooks.com – features new arrivals and special offers, but McWilliams hopes to list most of the shop’s books so that folks can browse book titles from the comfort of their homes. Hermit Hill Books is a member of the Vermont Antiquarian Booksellers Association (VABA). The store is located at 95 Main Street in Poultney and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, email hermithill@vermontel.net or call 802-287-5757.

Nicole has participated in field hockey, track and cheerleading. In addition to being actively involved at Fair Haven Union High School, Blackwood had the opportunity to participate in the Northeast Instrumental Music Festival for band. She plans to pursue a degree in the medical field as a medical doctor or veterinarian.

Smith’s areas of interests include political science and international relations. One enriching opportunity Smith had was to travel with the People to People Ambassador program. This has reinforced her desire to travel and interact with new cultures and people. A significant event that impacted her interests was learning about the Rwanda genocide. historically part of the Vermont – New York Slate Belt. West Castleton and Blissville are areas of town that have been actively quarried. Slate has been quarried in the local region continuously for 177 years, ever since it began at Fair Haven in 1839. In countless thousands of one-room schools, pupils sat at stationary desks and scratched out their assigned lessons using slate pencils to mark slate tablets. According to the roadside history marker that was placed at the corner of Pencil Mill Road and North Road in Castleton, “In 1843, John Cain erected a slate pencil mill along Sucker Brook. Benjamin and

James Adams bought the mill in 1853 and began mass-producing slate pencils as The Adams Manufacturing Co. Soon the company was renamed Vermont Slate and Alum. At its peak, the company produced up to 100,000 pencils per day, which were shipped throughout the world. By the mid1860s, slate pencil manufacturing began to wane as wood and graphite pencils took over the marketplace. The company ceased production following a devastating fire in 1876 and foreclosed two years later. Remnants of the pencil mill can be seen along the brook.”

Castleton Libary Corner

Artifacts and rollicking wackiness at library The long days of summer mean extra program time at the Castleton Free Library. On Thursday, June 22 at 7 p.m., the library will be hosting Ellen Moriarty, the education and outreach director at the South Champlain Historical Ecology Project (SCHEP), for a presentation about their archaeological work in West Haven. The project, organized under the auspices of Castleton University, was started in 2015 to investigate prehistoric Native American sites around the southern end of Lake Champlain. The research is concentrated along the Vermont lakeshore between the Poultney River and South Bay. While this is one of the most ecologically diverse and historically significant settings within the state of Vermont, it is also an area where almost no archaeology had been conducted previously. The presentation will include a general introduction to archaeology, before moving into the SCHEP project specifically.

In late May, SCHEP began a second season of excavations in West Haven at the Nature Conservancy’s Buckner Preserve, where there is evidence of people on this special landscape 11,000 years ago. A major SCHEP goal is to increase local knowledge about the significance of the prehistoric cultural heritage so that the resources can be better appreciated and protected at the local level. Moriarty also will share information on how volunteers might participate in the project. A few days later, on June 26 at 7 p.m., the library will be offering some “rollicking, earth-friendly wackiness for the whole family” with the Swing Peepers. The Peepers are known for their lively, improvisational, participatory music and storytelling. They are a Vermont vocal-harmony and multi-instrument duo comprised of musician/storyteller/educator Matthew Witten and singer/songwriter/multiinstrumentalist John Hadden. Between them, they play gui-

tar, mandolin, violin, harmonica, banjo, ukulele and accordion. They have performed throughout New England and New York State at such venues as Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Champlain Valley Folk Festival, Boston Regional Harmony Sweepstakes and many regional coffee houses. Hadden has appeared on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion,” and Witten has performed as the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s Troubadour. The Swing Peepers will be kicking off the library’s summer reading program. Later the same week, on June 29, the Castleton Free Library will hold the first workshop in its hands-on “Build a Better World” Summer Reading Program series for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. The first workshop will focus on gardening and starts at 7 p.m. Please visit the Castleton Free Library’s Facebook page for more information.

not fair. Just sixty years old and the nicest guy in the world.” Carl, you’re leaving a lot of fans behind. I’m sure that there’s a speedway in heaven for you.

Barbara Moyer When I first met her, she seemed quiet, almost bashful. But when I sent a few zingers her way she came back with this slow dry humor that would stick with you for about three days. I loved it. When husband Ken came in alone, it was all farmer as he’d head to the nut & bolt aisle. But when the two of them came in, it was usually something for the household. I’d show them where

it was and walk away slowly. I loved listening to them give the pros and cons of the item. And some of the rebuttals were so funny. I was listening and learning how two people truly in love were sharing and coping. And how two could spend thirty some years together. And, I thought “isn’t that beautiful.” But it was too late for me for I had already consigned myself to bachelorhood and had set up a pattern of life that would keep it that way. Barb and Ken thanks for all the fun times in the store. God bless quiet (Huh!) Barb Moyer.

Starline Rhythm Boys perform June 22 The Fair Haven Concerts will hold its second concert Thursday, June 22. Bring your lawn chair or blanket to the park any time after 5 p.m. on concert nights for an evening of family fun and great entertainment. There are picnic tables available if you want to enjoy supper before the concert. In addition to great music, these concerts also feature a very popular intermission where door prizes are given away. Prizes are drawn for adults and for children. Hot dogs, soda, water and popcorn are available each week for purchase. Next week, on June 22, the Starline Rhythm Boys will

bring their honkytonk sound to wow music lovers who travel to Fair Haven from across the region. Formed in 1998 by 3 professional musicians with combined experience of over 100 years in various bands (including bass man Billy Bratcher’s one year stint in 1997 with Wayne “The Train” Hancock), The Starline Rhythm Boys is a full-time, actively-booked drummerless “Tennessee Trio,” consisting of Danny Coane (“Little Danny C”) on acoustic rhythm guitar, Big Al Lemery on electric lead guitar and Billy (“Slappin’ Billy B”) Bratcher on acoustic upright “slap” bass, in the style of Elvis’,

Cash’s and Perkins’ early bands. The group performs vintage country, honkytonk and rockabilly music with very strong country harmony duet vocals. Its repertoire consists of many superb originals, mainly written by Bratcher, as well as great covers of both classic and obscure numbers. The Starline Rhythm Boys is both a listening and highly danceable group and appeal to a very wide age range. For additional information, contact Ceil Hunt, of Fair Haven Concerts in the Park at 802- 265-7913 or fhgstechie@ yahoo.com.

Strawberry Shortcake in Middletown Springs This year, the Middletown Springs Historical Society will be hosting the 42nd annual Strawberry Festival. Strawberry enthusiasts are invited on Sunday, June 25 from 2-4 p.m. to the Historical Society on the Green. Vermont strawberries, Stewart’s ice cream, and Thomas Dairy whipping cream. The shortcake costs $6 and comes with a beverage. There will also be a craft show featuring local artists. The Historical Society Museum will also be open for the afternoon. The historical exhibits will be on display, as

well as the Middletown History Timeline. The timeline shows the local history starting in the 1700s all the way up to the 21st century. There will also be children’s activities and live music. For more information, contact David Wright at 802-2352376.

Letter to the Editor Spring Fling dance success On Sunday, June 4, ARC Rutland Area again offered a Spring Fling dance for more than 30 members, parents and friends of ARC Rutland Area. It was a fun afternoon of socializing, munching and dancing. Music was provided by John Saltis from Penguin Production and everyone had their fill of Dominos pizzas, Subway grinders, beverages and ice cream cups. With this opportunity, people with developmental disabilities were able to enjoy life a bit more. When asked “Why ARC dances are important?” all surveys had checked: “I feel like part of a community when at a dance,” “mixing with others improves my social skills” and “I made a new friend today.” ARC knows that people with developmental disabilities don’t have support circles develop naturally. At the dances, we promote people to grow their circles of support by encouraging people to meet someone new. Special thanks must go to John Wing at Dominos for the pizza, to Subway at Rutland Shopping Plaza for the grinder discounts, and to Price Chopper, Hannaford and Tops for gift cards that purchased the other needed items. We also appreciate the helpers who gathered and served the food, set up and tore down the hall, Becky Bergman, Jane Frank, Kate Tibbs, Lisa Martell, CK, Terry and the many others at the end that picked up chairs and tables before leaving. Thank you all for pulling together to celebrate the end of spring and a promise of summer! We promote ARC Rutland Area by offering programs— derived from our name, Advocacy, Resources and Community—for people with developmental disabilities. ARC helps the local Self Advocates Becoming Empowered - Rutland with their monthly meetings and their goals. One is their Abilities Awareness Training. Call us to come present it to you. We have presented at Castleton University three

years in a row now. We also help the Rutland Family Support Network with their list serve that give families the opportunity to connect with each other and organizations. Workshops are offered too. We do Representative Payee work for around 55 people; read material from State and Local Standing Committee meetings on developmental disability services; and, help members advocate for changes when necessary. Of course, our more known activities are the five dances we provide each year, one of which was just put on this past Sunday—the Spring Fling. Our AKtion Club—a Kiwanis family club for adults living with disabilities—continues with our volunteer advisors, Jane Frank, Mike Messier and Becky Bergman. This club has again decided to plant a garden to donate food to those in need. It continues to need community volunteers to help people with developmental disabilities get to, and do, their service projects. Also, call ARC if our group can be of service to you or if you would like to help support this group or any of their community service projects or find out their calendar of service projects details. The projects typically done in a year are: food drive, pet food drive, garden, two fundraisers (a bake sale and a car wash) and, at year end, they look for a family to adopt for Christmas. Once again, we thank all for their assistance in making ARC Rutland Area’s Spring Fling a party of fun and a great place to network. We know that all in attendance had a great afternoon because of the efforts of Subway, Dominos, Hannaford, Price Chopper, Tops, Penguin Productions, ARC Rutland Area and all the volunteers. There are three part-time employees and many volunteer members at ARC Rutland Area. Check us out at www.arcrutlandarea.org. Sincerely, Lisa S. Lynch, Executive Director

Bancroft Contracting Corporation is a Maine-based self-performing industrial construction company. We work on dams and we build huge fish passages. We work in paper mills and other big industrial plants. Sometimes we build giant foundations and industrial buildings. We build really cool projects all over New England. We’ve been in business since 1977. We pay well and we have a great benefit package. We need heavy construction laborers, form carpenters, and welders for a project in Chittenden VT starting right away. You need to have reliable transportation. You need to be energetic and able to do hard physical work for at least 10 hours a day in all weather conditions. You need to know how to use some basic construction tools. It’s no-go if you have a drug problem, if you have to be in court twice a week, or if you have transportation problems that make you miss work a lot. Pay depends on ability and experience. We’ll be working a lot of overtime this summer. We can use a few people with no construction experience if you can show up every day, work hard, and learn. If you have proven experience in heavy construction so much the better -- we pay top dollar for skilled journey-level craft people. Bancroft Contracting takes good care of its people, and people here work hard to take good care of our company. If this sounds interesting to you call me, Harold Skelton, and we’ll talk. I won’t BS you, and you won’t BS me -- sound about right? I look forward to hearing from you! Call (207) 743-8946.
