Fireworks, food, fun! Poultney festivities highlight local celebrations Poultney doesn’t play around. When it comes to celebrating the Fourth of July, the town, nicknamed “home of the good life” by locals lives by the slogan: “Go big, or go home.” Multiple shows, a community parade, fireworks and more will highlight Independence Day in Poultney. The days-long celebration kicks off with fireworks on Lake St. Catherine this Saturday at dusk. Lake residents Rick Roberts and Jack Williams each year draw out the “oohh’s and aahh’s” with their coordinated fireworks display.
Boat owners from all over the Lakes Region will gather Sunday at 1 p.m. at Lake St. Catherine to flaunt their patriotically-decorated vessels. Awards will be given out in many categories, and anyone is welcome to join.

Last year’s winner was Justice Cook who hovered above the water on a fly board. Burgner said that winners of previous years usually return for the parade. There were about 28 boats in the parade last year. The annual fireworks display presented by lake residents Rick Roberts and Jack Williams will occur on the evening of Saturday, July 1.

Plunge Continued from front page Rosenthal, Rotary member and former Poultney town manager, but, adding with a laugh, “I could never get my act together to plan one.” The summer alternative to the Polar Plunge, which has been gaining in popularity throughout the country, will have plungers participating in three water events—an inflatable raft race, an inner tube race and a swim race with inflatable arm swimmies. Families and friends are invited to sign up as teams for the water events. Cost is $15 for adults and $5 for children 5 to 12. Children under 5 years old are free. Fee includes a lunch token good for a hot dog, bag of chips and a drink. Teams are encouraged to come up with creative names and even dress in costumes. In addition to the water activities and races, there will be log-rolling demonstrations, food and music.
Poultney Continued from front page The pair, working with Young’s Explosives from Rochester, New York, will light up the sky by setting off a series of flashy fireworks from a barge, just off the end of Cone’s Point on the lake. “I hope that the show lets everyone lay down their ‘stuff,’ if only for a time, and to sit back, relax, and realize that sometimes life—and the Lake— are pretty good things,” Roberts said. The next day, Sunday, the Lake St. Catherine Association’s 5th annual decorated Boat Parade will take over the lake. The parade will start with all the participating boats gathering in Forest House Bay at 1p.m. (rain date: July 3). Contact Lila Burgner at BurgnerL@msn.com or call 802884-8093 to register and get a boat number. Solar companies will be exhibiting all the latest technologies and providing information for alternative sources of heating homes. Merchant participants are encouraged to raffle off a representative product of value from their establishment. Raffle drawing will be held at the event. For example, Otto’s Cones Point General Store, thanks to a generous offset donation from Woodard Marine in Bomoseen, will be raffling off two professional grade paddle boards valued at more than $1,900. Proceeds from the Solar Plunge will benefit the food shelves in Poultney and Wells, which are always in need of items to help neighbors, Rosenthal said. The Poultney and Wells area food shelves rely on donations throughout the year to assist area residents in need. Both the Poultney Rotary and Otto’s Cones Point General Store are dedicated to community service and are excited to present this fun, family oriented event and at the same time help their neighbors.
“We think this will be a great event all around,” said Rosenthal. Otto’s Cones Point owners Rosemary and Chris Beckmann share this enthusiasm. “Chris and I both love this community,” said Rosemary Beckmann. “As owners of a home on Lake St. Catherine ourselves, we love to give back and have fun doing it. We are so excited to be working with Jonas and the Rotary in creating what we hope will be an eagerly anticipated annual tradition for years to come.” Entrants can download a signup sheet from the Solar Plunge Facebook page @solarplunge or can pick up a sign-up sheet and brochure at Otto’s Cones Point General Store located on Route 30 at Lake St. Catherine. Completed signup sheets and fees must be dropped off at Otto’s Cones Point General Store no later than Saturday, July 15th. For more information call Jonas Rosenthal at 802-342-7251 or email either Jonas.rosenthal. vt@gmail.com or chris@ ottosconespoint.com.
about 28 boats in the parade last year. All are invited to participate or watch from the shore or from their own vessel in the center of the lake. All children who participate in the parade will get a gift certificate for an ice cream cone from Stewart’s Shops. “We hope it’ll be successful, and that people enjoy it,” said Burgner. The Fourth of July, on Tuesday, will begin with the annual Martin Devlin Memorial Fun Run, beginning at 8 a.m. The race, which benefits the Rutland Area Visiting Nurses and Hospice, has grown over the years. It started with drawing around 75 participants and now attracts 200. People run, walk, and sometimes even bring their dogs with them. The run is more than 15 years old, but it took on its current name and cause 15 years ago when Kerry Devlin’s husband, Martin, passed away. For many years Martin Devlin ran in Poultney’s 4th of July 5K, so it was only fitting to rename the race in his honor. When Martin Devlin became ill, the hospice services provided Devlin and his family some much-needed comfort. Now, Kerry is thankful that she can give back to an organization that gave so much to the Devlin family. The course begins at Green Mountain College, heads west on Route 22A into New York,
then back through Poultney to the college. This terrain is varied, including rolling hills, grassy areas, and plenty of volunteers to cheer on the racers and provide water. There will be prizes for all age groups and raffles. Any questions should be directed to 802-287-4374. Also on July 4, at Poultney Elementary School there will be a variety of field events and music from noon until dusk, when the fireworks show closes out the night. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Enerjazz will provide music, until Whiskey River Band steps in from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 pm. Blaine Goad will hold magic shows at both noon and 1:45 p.m., and the No Strings Marionette Show will be held at both 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. DJ John Saltis will hold a dance party from 7:30 p.m. until dusk when the fireworks begin. The celebration continues the following weekend. On Saturday, July 8, when the St. John’s Episcopal Church will be celebrating Independence Day with a prayer service. The service will feature James Cassarino on the original mechanical organ. He is the Director of the Vocal, Instrumental and Welsh Heritage Programs at Green Mountain College. The church is located on Route 140 in East Poultney. For more information, please contact Reverend William Davidson of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wells by calling 518-499-1850.

Community effort brings power to school The emergency generator at the Mettawee Community School in West Pawlet was dedicated earlier this month, in a ceremony hosted by Principal Brooke DeBonis. Additional speakers were Pawlet Emergency Management Director Bob Morlino and Ed Cleveland of the Pawlet Select Board. Morlino explained that the 20-kilowatt Kohler Power diesel generator was made possible by a $48,000 Federal Emergency Management Agency Hazard Mitigation grant to the Town of Pawlet, along with $16,000 in private matching donations. With this new feature, the town will be able to use the school as an overnight shelter for Pawlet residents and anyone
in the surrounding communities. The generator also means that Pawlet will be able to locate its Emergency Operations Center at the school for use in town-wide emergencies. A second grant of $6,800 has more recently been awarded to the Town of Pawlet for radio equipment to be used by the EOC. The radios will be installed in September. Both Morlino and DeBonis emphasized the communitywide scope of this project and thanked everyone who had participated – the many private donors and the volunteers for major fundraising efforts at Consider Bardwell Farm, the Pawlet Station Restaurant, the Duane Carleton music event held at the school and the

fourth-grade flower bulb sale. Also recognized were members of the school staff, including teacher Dawn Robertson and custodians Bill Wood and Jim McGraw. Others who participated in this effort were the local contractors, some of whom generously gave reduced rates for their time and materials – Matt Waite Excavation, Tyler Electric Security and Jim Sheldon Excavating, as well as many individual volunteers in the Pawlet community. Morlino explained that after Tropical Storm Irene in 2011, when many parts of Pawlet were isolated by flooding, the town recognized the need for an additional overnight shelter site. The school is ideally situated for this purpose.
a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The library will accept donations of gently used books, games, puzzles or DVD’s through July 7. Donations of baked goods will be accepted at the MWA on July 7 and 8.
On July 7 and 8, the Wells Village Library will have its annual book and bake sale at the Modern Woodmen of America in Wells. The sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday and from 9

CALENDAR ITEMS DEADLINE
‘Build a Better World’ at Castleton Free Library
Friday at 10 a.m. is the deadline to submit items for the free calendar in the following week’s newspaper. Whenever possible, items should be submitted a week or more earlier than that to ensure timely publication.
School’s out for summer! It’s time to stock up on books for pleasure reading and lazier days – the subversive kind of learning that happens in a hammock or at the beach instead of at a desk. Numerous studies have shown that students who don’t attend summer school or read books over break are likely to experience a decline in their literacy achievement, testing lower in the fall than the previous spring, but this can be prevented through summer reading. We aim to inspire bibliophiles of all ages, and we’ll introduce a wide variety of connected books each evening during this year’s “Build a Better World” Summer Reading Program. All programs below, mainly geared toward students entering grades 1-6, begin at 7 p.m. and include snacks and incentives. They are free and open to all. Preregistration is not
required. Check our Facebook page for updates, or call Jan (468-5574) with questions. Mon. July 17 - Build-athon studio I: Design your own structures with a crazy array of materials (cardboard, clay, wood, junk, duct tape, marshmallows, and so much more). We’ll also watch clips showing work by kinetic sculptors and innovative architects. Mon. July 24 – Build-athon studio II: Continue your projects, or try something new (different materials will be introduced). We’ll have stations with commercial building stuff, too (e.g. Lego and Keva Planks). Make a square for our Earth quilt. Mon. July 31 - Design a better fantasy world: First go on a visual tour of some famous fantasy worlds in books, and then design your own world on paper with an assortment of art
media choices. Mon. Aug. 7 - Stepping stones to a better world: Be inspired by the story told through the stone artwork of Syrian artist Nizar Ali Badr in his book Stepping Stones: A Refugee Family’s Journey. Create your own artwork from rocks, and design a stepping stone. Mon. Aug. 14 - Build better with sun, wind, and water: Explore alternative energy ideas, and beautiful things that sparkle and flutter. We have many of the books recommended on the NEA Summer Reading list, books on the 2017-2018 Dorothy Canfield Fisher Reading list, favorite series and classics, and large collections of graphic novels and picture books. For those long car rides, don’t forget to borrow or download a good supply of audiobooks.

Keeping your pets safe during the Fourth of July With the 4th of July comes picnics, parades and fireworks. The 5th of July usually brings more stray animals than usual to the shelter. The noise and flash of fireworks scares even pets that are used to being outside. Since fireworks are becoming more common the best advice we have is to keep your pet indoors. For many pets, the most natural reaction to a scare is to run. If, despite your best efforts, your dog or cat gets free and runs, you want to have good ID on the pet. Microchips work best because collars and tags can get pulled off. Make sure you have informed the microchip company of any changes to your contact information. Call the Rutland County Humane Society (RCHS) at 483.6700 to let us know your pet is missing. If it’s after hours our answering service can let you know if someone has called in having found your pet. Please be assured, even if your pet is brought in after hours by law enforcement, they are in a safe, comfortable place until you can retrieve them. Even if we don’t answer the phone we are staffed 7 days a week. Wishing you and your pets a safe fourth of July. Thank You, Rutland County Humane Society Adoption Center PH:(802) 483-6700 www.rchsvt.org

Bancroft Contracting Corporation is a Maine-based self-performing industrial construction company. We work on dams and we build huge fish passages. We work in paper mills and other big industrial plants. Sometimes we build giant foundations and industrial buildings. We build really cool projects all over New England. We’ve been in business since 1977. We pay well and we have a great benefit package. Community Care Network has several openings in our comprehensive, integrated, and family-centered early childhood program. Applicants must have the ability to individualize and provide a developmentally appropriate preschool curriculum for children ages 3-5. This position embraces a unified approach that fosters teamwork and engages in partnership with families. LEAD TEACHER Requirements: a BA or advanced degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field and certification in Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education AND 1 year of experience working with preschool children in a group setting mandatory. This is a full-time, benefit eligible position. TEACHER ASSISTANT Requirements: a minimum of a CDA required, Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field preferred, AND a minimum of one year experience working with preschool children in a group setting. This is a full-time benefit eligible position. SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS Substitute teachers must be at least 18 years old, High School Diploma or GED required and experience working with children preferred. The hourly rate is $11.00. We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health and dental insurance, short and long term disability insurance, life insurance, 401K and a generous leave pool.
We need heavy construction laborers, form carpenters, and welders for a project in Chittenden VT starting right away. You need to have reliable transportation. You need to be energetic and able to do hard physical work for at least 10 hours a day in all weather conditions. You need to know how to use some basic construction tools. It’s no-go if you have a drug problem, if you have to be in court twice a week, or if you have transportation problems that make you miss work a lot. Pay depends on ability and experience. We’ll be working a lot of overtime this summer. We can use a few people with no construction experience if you can show up every day, work hard, and learn. If you have proven experience in heavy construction so much the better -- we pay top dollar for skilled journey-level craft people. Bancroft Contracting takes good care of its people, and people here work hard to take good care of our company. If this sounds interesting to you call me, Harold Skelton, and we’ll talk. I won’t BS you, and you won’t BS me -- sound about right? I look forward to hearing from you! Call (207) 743-8946.
