Mysterious Owls HEBRON The Hebron Preservation Society will present a program called “Mysterious Owls of the Washington County Grasslands” on Thursday, July 13 at 7 p.m. Laurie LaFond, executive director of Friends of t h e Wa s h i n g t o n C o u n t y Grasslands IBA, will share how to spot the different owls as well as talk about the importance of protecting the area’s grasslands where the birds call home. The program will be held at the Organ Barn Bed and Breakfast located at 672 North Grimes Hill Road, just off Route 22 between Salem and Granville. Friends of the Washington County Grasslands IBA “is a rapidly growing nonprofit land trust that is making a real difference in raising awareness of and conserving critical habitat for New York State’s endangered Short-eared owls and other threatened and atrisk grassland birds,” said LaFond. A 2,000-acre core of the grasslands located in the towns of Fort Edward, Argyle and Kingsbury provide wildlife habitat for endangered and sharply declining populations of grassland nesting birds such the Northern Harrier, upland sandpiper, Henslow’s sparrow, killdeer and Eastern meadowlark. Endangered Short-eared owls migrate from Canada to our grasslands to spend their winters. Sightings of these owls increased dramatically in the Washington County grasslands this past winter, highlighting the importance of preserving the habitat. The program is free and open to the public. u

Friday14 Canal Fest WHITEHALL Skenesborough Park will be the place to be on the weekend of July 14-15. The annual Whitehall Canal Festival, which will kick off at 6 p.m. on Friday July 14, has been a staple of Whitehall for more than 30 years and marks the beginning of summer with a variety of activities for all ages. The event begins with the popular cake booth, where festivalgoers place a wager on their lucky numbers and a roulette wheel is spun – if it lands on your number, you win a cake. Inside the picnic shelter, ladies from Skene Manor will be cooking up fried bread dough and the Whitehall Guild will be providing thirst-quenching lemonade and iced tea. The food and games run until 9 p.m. Vendors will also be present, hawking their wares. Live music will be provided at 7 p.m. by the Steel Pier Jazz Band, which is returning for a third consecutive year. Originally formed in the

1970s as “The Dixie Daddies,” the band performed on the Lake George cruise boats for many years. Although many of the members are retired, they still enjoy bringing their tunes to the area. On Saturday, the festival picks up at noon with a chicken barbecue and many of the same vendors, food and rides. The Wings Clydesdales will also be offering free horse and carriage rides to the end of Main Street and back from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. The band Freewheelin’ takes to the amphitheater stage at 7:30 p.m. Following Freewheelin’s performance, at 9:30 p.m., the night sky will be lit with brilliant fireworks. When Canal Fest ends, it doesn’t mean the show doesn’t go on. Bands will be taking to the bandstand in Riverside Veterans Memorial Park every Friday through Aug. 25. The Moonlighters are slated for July 15; Donnie P. and Celebration Family will turn up the polka on July 28; big band Enerjazz is set for Aug. 4; Willie Playmore, a contemporary group is scheduled for Aug. 11; country music will be brought to the stage Aug. 18 courtesy of the Bluebillies; and the Washington County Concert Band rounds out the summer concert season on Aug. 25.

FIND A JOB HERE! TRUCK DRIVER Bennington Plant

Bancroft Contracting Corporation is a Maine-based self-performing industrial construction company. We work on dams and we build huge fish passages. We work in paper mills and other big industrial plants. Sometimes we build giant foundations and industrial buildings. We build really cool projects all over New England. We’ve been in business since 1977. We pay well and we have a great benefit package. We need heavy construction laborers, form carpenters, and welders for a project in Chittenden VT starting right away. You need to have reliable transportation. You need to be energetic and able to do hard physical work for at least 10 hours a day in all weather conditions. You need to know how to use some basic construction tools. It’s no-go if you have a drug problem, if you have to be in court twice a week, or if you have transportation problems that make you miss work a lot. Pay depends on ability and experience. We’ll be working a lot of overtime this summer. We can use a few people with no construction experience if you can show up every day, work hard, and learn. If you have proven experience in heavy construction so much the better -- we pay top dollar for skilled journey-level craft people. Bancroft Contracting takes good care of its people, and people here work hard to take good care of our company. If this sounds interesting to you call me, Harold Skelton, and we’ll talk. I won’t BS you, and you won’t BS me -- sound about right? I look forward to hearing from you! Call (207) 743-8946.
