Re-enactors will converge this weekend at the Hubbardton Battlefield to mark the key Revolutionary War skirmish that took place in Vermont between the forces of the British Empire and the American rebels fighting for freedom.
The British are coming! Revolutionary War encampment in Hubbardton this weekend By Matthew Saari More than 400 reenactors will converge on the Hubbardton Battlefield this weekend as a part of the 240th anniversary of Vermont’s only Revolutionary War battle, which occurred on July 7, 1777. “Bennington actually took place a couple of miles southwest of Bennington, in New York,” said site
interpreter Jeff Bruce. The commemoration begins Friday at 2 p.m. when the reenactors, some of whom are embarking upon the same 26-mile hike from Mount Independence that fleeing Continental forces took 240 years ago. History enthusiasts can send the reenactors off from the Mount on July 6 and watch them along the roads
and byways leading to Hubbardton. Upon arrival the reenactors, portraying American, British and Brunswick German mercenaries who fought alongside British forces during the battle, will set up camp. The British and Germans will be encamped on a hill overlooking the Selleck Cabin, while the Americans

Sales Continued from front page chicken barbecue, we usually draw a crowd,” said Dolores Luebke, this year’s event organizer. The WPVFD will be serving breakfast at 9, and other food items throughout the day. Tickets for the chicken barbecue will begin being sold at 9 a.m., and the meal will be served at noon. It will go until
History Continued from front page will be encamped on the other side of the museum. Camps are open to the public all weekend, allowing conversations with the reenactors who will provide a description of a soldier’s life during the Revolution. The reenactment of the large battle takes place Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. It’s a perennial favorite and provides a vivid history lesson. “In the past we have had a PA system and one of the Hubbardton curators explains the reenactment,” said Bruce. Spectators are allowed to stand as close as 30 feet from the reenactors. In addition to the large battle, skirmishes will be held on Saturday and Sunday, also with narrations,
it is sold out. The festivities will be at the West Pawlet Fire House on Route 153 in the center of West Pawlet. For more information, call (802) 645-0109. “Generally the turnout is exceptionally large for something in West Pawlet,” said Luebke. “It’s a pretty good sized event, we’re expecting several hundred people.” There will be approximately 20 vendors with crafts, food items, baked goods and several
name brand vendors, including 31 Gifts, Material Things and U.S. borne books. Ellie Park will also be there with her baked goods. This year, David French generously donated many items that will be sold to benefit the organization. Items include paintings, antique glass, handpainted bowls and plates and many other things. Luebke said, “It’s an interesting mix of antique and household items in perfect condition.”
“just to give an overview of how war was fought in the 1770s,” Bruce said. Camp sutlers will also be portrayed by reenactors in addition to the soldiers of both camps. A sutler, or victualer, was a civilian merchant who set up shop in army camps and sold goods to armies while in the field. These merchants sold a variety of goods, and Bruce said spectators will be able to purchase 18th century goods throughout the weekend. On Saturday, the site will host two book signings, beginning at noon. Bruce Venter, who recently authored a book detailing the Battle of Hubbardton, will be there, as will members of the Mount Independence Coalition who just released a work about the Mount. Kid-friendly activities will be ongoing throughout the weekend. The Hubbardton
Museum will be open throughout the weekend and offers a choice selection of books and exhibits on the Revolutionary War. The Battle of Hubbardton was a rear-guard action performed by soldiers hailing from Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts – “basically from the New England area,” Bruce said. The Continental forces, under Maj. Gen. Arthur St. Clair, were fleeing from Fort Ticonderoga and British forces, under Gen. John Burgoyne, were fast on the Americans’ trail. “His (Burgoyne) goal was to cut off New England from the rest of the colonies,” Bruce said. The American forces stopped in Hubbardton and left 1,200 soldiers to slow the pursuing British. This delaying tactic allowed the preservation of St. Clair’s forces. His army went on to contribute to the Battle of Bennington and the Battle of Saratoga in October 1777, which is conventionally considered the turning point of the war. “The rear-guard action worked; it stopped the British Army cold,” said Bruce. “They sustained a lot of casualties.” Reenactments are dependent on the weather but, Bruce said, it would have to be terrible weather to stop the weekend’s events. “As long as it’s not downpouring or thunder and lightning,” he said. Daily admission is $6 for adults, children under 15 are admitted free. There will be adequate parking as the museum staff has had several local fields mowed in preparation for visitors. A tractor and cart will be made available to transport visitors from parking to the battlefield. The Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site is open from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday and Monday holidays until Oct. 15. For more information, call 802-273-2282 or visit www.historicsites.vermont.gov.

Tuscan dinner to benefit Haynes House of Hope Savor an authentic Tuscan dinner in a beautifully restored barn at 6 p.m. on July 16, when Dancing Ewe Farm in North Granville presents a memorable gourmet dinner to benefit the Haynes House of Hope. The setting for the fourcourse dinner is much like a local Trattoria in Tuscany. A limited number of tickets will be sold, creating a very intimate dining experience. Dinner will consist of an aperitivo, antipasto, primo piatto, secondo piatto con contorno, dolce and wine from the Maremma region of Tuscany, imported by Dancing Ewe (one bottle per couple). In addition, guests can tour the farm, see the cheese house, the sheep and the working sheep dogs. Dancing Ewe Farm is owned and operated by Jody and Luisa Somers. The couple
breeds East Friesian sheep for their milk, which is used in the production of authentic Italian cheeses. Luisa is a native of Tuscany. this year will be five additional favorite trophies presented on Saturday, for an added chance to win. Specialty awards and the “Favorite 50” will be presented Sunday at 3 p.m. “It’s possible that you could see something from the 1920’s or 30’s, and you could see a fairly brand new car that somebody has put some time and effort into customizing,” said a group member. “We run the gamut of everything from foreign cars, muscle cars, street rods, trucks, large trucks, semis, just about anything and everything,” said another member, Sean Barrett. A 50/50 raffle will be held on Sunday afternoon, but tickets will be sold both days. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the WSYB Christmas Fund. The silent auction will benefit the Rutland Free Clinic, and other donations will be distributed to area charities from the profits of the 2016 show. Neighboring New York artists open their doors On July 13-16, Open Studios of Washington County makes its biennial return to the region. The event launched in 2007 and has brought thousands of visitors to local studios while generating significant revenue for participating artists. It has also raised the visibility of the artists in the communities in which they live. “Open Studios is a great opportunity for people to discover the extraordinary talent of our regional artists,” said Sue Sanderson, organizer, Open Studios of Washington County. “This year we have a record 20 artists. Many are nationally and internationally acclaimed. Those who aren’t are making their mark. And all support each other.” The diversity of the artists is important to the success of
the tour. Established tour artists attract an engaged audience and bring credibility to the event. First-time tour artists offer collectors the opportunity to discover new, exciting talent. It’s an important balance. Greenwich artist Karen Koziol experienced the enthusiasm for new artists during the 2015 tour. “Doing the tour was absolutely exhilarating,” said Koziol. “People were really engaged and interested in what I was doing, why I was doing it and how I was doing it. I made some great connections.” Elana Mark, who once taught art in Israel and now creates art from her Cambridge studio, is confident her first experience on the tour will go just as well. “I’ve gone on the tour in the

that people really appreciate what I do really hits me. It’s important.” Due to the event’s popularity, the 2017 tour has been extended to four days. The additional days will allow participants to spend more time with a broader range of artists—and more time to experience different aspects of Washington County’s cultural richness. In addition, the 2017 tour for the first time will offer artist workshops and demos, as seven Open Studios artists will provide guests with a deeper look into their art, techniques and inspiration. Workshops include: “Finding the Right Composition,” with Hannie Eisma Varosy;” Making Oil Paint,” with Leslie Parke; “Alla Prima Painting,” with Anne Sutherland; “Ink on Yupo,”

I’m looking forward to sharing my work, and I hope people feel the same way,” she said. For returning artists, Open Studios is an opportunity to show both new work and old, as well as revisit with past tour goers. “Open Studios is great in that it allows me to share such a full range of my work, including archival pieces that still resonate with me. It demonstrates my development as an artist,” said Leslie Ferst, a clay sculptor and potter based in Cambridge. “Also, I have people who come back from past tours and continue to collect my work. Twig Remembers Marty Traverse Marty was sort of a quiet guy until you got him squawking and then how he could go. I was never a hunter, but I was always interested just how the guys were doing out there with the herd. Back in the 1970’s if I want-
ed to know how the hunt was going out Castleton way, I would check with Marty because he was one of those guys who was in the woods all year. Squirrel, rabbit and turkey seasons gave him access to check on the deer herd.
Now, if it was the last day of the season and he got a spikehorn it was an off year. But if it was with a week to go and he got his 6 or 8 pointer, it was a good year. God bless Marty Traverse – Hunter!
Clayt Jones Jr. I remember him as a little guy out and about with his dad. But you lose track of them for awhile. In my weekly visit to the Laundromat I see him walking by with rod, reel and creel. So I stop him and introduce myself and tell him I was a classmate of his dad’s. So I get in the routine of checking on how the fishing is going. Most times “not too
good” and I get the reasoning – water too high, too dry, too much rain. One day he lets me peek in the creel and there’s a dandy. “Where’d you get him?” So he points south. That was always the answer – “up that way” or “down that way.” And he never took one out of the creel for display. Clayt Jones, Jr. – good fisherman. He wasn’t about to let
anyone know where they were. Well, he came by it rightly. His dad grew up by the river and in that family were good fishermen. Now this may be hearsay – they always had a hook out the window and first one home from school had to check and see what might be for supper. God be with you, Clayton Jones, Jr.

Burnham Hollow Orchards hosts summer day camp Run into a pack of wolves and a princess roaming the woods lately? You might, at Theater in the Woods Vermont’s two-week day camp at Burnham Hollow Orchard in Middletown Springs. Theater in the Woods Vermont camp is open to ages 8-14. It runs weekdays until July 14, from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. The camp’s first season last summer saw the creation of not only wolves, grandmas and woodcutters in a Frank Asch play, but also a lizard, a wizard and a cowgirl-on-a-pegasus in the play the campers wrote.
Theater in the Woods Camp 2017 features another Asch play, another original creation, and a schedule full of fun, creative games, fantastic food, and plenty of time outside. Over 20 years of experience with SolarFest Theater in the Woods plays impelled the creation of this camp. “We know we offer something really unique. Last year showed us that kids are excited to be a part of creating outdoor theater and all that entails,” said Melissa ChesnutTangerman, co-founder of Theater in the Woods. “We

teach team values and clear communication through the creative skills of theater: observation, exploration, imagination; movement, music, and improvisation.” As last year, the camp will culminate in a public performance of the two plays on July 14. Theater in the Woods campers will then have the opportunity to perform the Frank Asch play at SolarFest at Southern Vermont Arts Center in Manchester on July 21 and 22. Children’s book author Frank Asch wrote his first play for SolarFest in 1997, Ziggy the
Piggy, subsequently published as a book. Nine other plays followed in the next fifteen years. Asch’s plays and the Theater in the Woods Company became “a phenomenon unto itself,” said Patty Kenyon, former SolarFest Managing Director. “Each year I watched as more and more people would gather in the woods to begin a journey through time and space, taking us through a magical forest interacting with bears, wolves, princes, frogs and fairies,” Kenyon said. “There was always a clever play on words, tying old fairy
tales with present-day dilemmas, complete with a moral at the end of the story.” Wheaton Squier and Rainbow Squier of Tinmouth and Megan Bouchard of Brooklyn join ChesnutTangerman in a mission to encourage kids’ creativity through the transformative power of theater in the magic of the woods. Each director brings years of performance, directing and educational experience to the camp. For more information, please visit www.theaterinthewoodsvt.org.
Blues legend to perform library benefit concert Wednesday Bob Stannard Productions will present a benefit concert for the Manchester Community Library on Wednesday, July 12, featuring the bluesy, soulful sounds of the 2012 and 2017 Blues Music Awards winner Biscuit Miller & the Mix. Joining Biscuit Miller will be special guests Bob Stannard and John Falk. The evening begins with a pre-show party featuring snacks and a cash bar at 6 p.m. Music begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20. Biscuit Miller is a flamboyant bass player who fronts his own high energy, entertaining funky party band that’ll rival any stage show seen. Music performed at the library will feature songs from “Wishbone,” Miller’s eagerly awaited third studio recording. The title track was inspired by Miller’s two grandsons, Jordan and Josh, who were excited about making a wish when they got their hands on the turkey wishbone during Thanksgiving dinner. Their excitement sparked an idea
in musician’s creative mind, and he literally began singing and writing the song on the spot. He then jammed with his grandsons in his music room after dinner. That special day with his family and the birth of a song were all the motivation Miller needed to get back into the studio to begin working on “Wishbone.” Miller was introduced to the bass for the first time at the age of eleven when visiting his friend Datrick. It was sitting in a corner collecting dust when the young Miller picked it up and started playing it. The four string electric bass belonged to Datrick’s older brother Darnell, who taught him a couple of songs. Miller took to it immediately and thus began a love affair with playing bass that has taken him places he could never have imagined. He formed his first band, Clever, with childhood friend Ivan Wallace. They moved to Minneapolis in 1982. Soon after, a mutual friend, Joe Rowe introduced Miller to Sonny Rogers who taught him a lot about play-
ing basic blues. Miller then went on to play with other respected blues artists such as, Mojo Buford, formerly with Muddy Waters, and Lady Blue, backup vocalist for Ike and Tina Turner. One day, Miller received a phone call requesting him to come back home to sub for Chicago’s own legendary Lonnie Brooks who needed a bass player for one night. That one night lasted for more than ten years as Biscuit became the permanent bass player for the Lonnie Brooks Band. In 2000 he formed Biscuit and The Mix to fill up some down-time. When he is not busy touring or recording, Miller loves to spend time with his friends and family. His grandchildren are especially precious to him. The benefit concert will take place at the Manchester Community Library which is located at 138 Cemetery Ave., at the corner of Cemetery Ave. and Route 7A, in Manchester Center. For more information, call the library at 802-362-2607.

Paintings, pottery and lavender at First Friday Three first-time guests will offer art inspired by the natural world, lavenderbased products and theatrical music at the upcoming First Friday at Granville’s Pember Library and Museum. German-born artist Reni Wulfken, who lived and studied painting in Venice, Florida, for many years before returning recently to the Granville area, will display her paintings. Her art is inspired by the natural world, and she interprets her subject matter through color and light. “When I paint, the world goes away,” she said. “I am in a place of total relaxation, and there is a serenity there that no other endeavor can match. It is from this place that I create my best work.” This serenity and relaxation will be echoed by Diane and David Allen of Lavenlair Farm in Whitehall as they exhibit and sell their lavender products and talk of the way that lavender can help people “relax, recharge, and reconnect.” They have installed a 100foot meditative labyrinth made entirely of lavender plants, and a field of about 5,000 plants comprised of 22 varieties of lavender. During First Friday, the Allens will present an array of lavender-inspired bouquets, soaps and lotions. Also, Neal Herr, the award-winning writer, director, composer, producer and musical theater instructor, will perform at the Pember. Herr has written more than 500 songs and 12 musicals, and is a frequent performer, producer and music director at Hudson River Music Hall. In addition to the multitude of original music he has recorded, Herr has been involved in tributes to artists such as Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Young, and the Bee Gee’s. Meanwhile, the Slate Valley Museum will also be hosting the work of a local artisan from 7-9 p.m. on July 7. Victoria Whitney of the North Granville Pottery Company will display her work and give a demonstration on how to make braided arms of mugs. Her work uses the locally harvested clay of the Slate Valley. “Victoria’s pottery is stunning,” said Krista Rupe, executive director of the Slate Valley Museum. “Each piece its own work of art. We are glad to welcome an artisan for right here in the Slate Valley working with clay.” Art has always been important to Whitney, who was raised in an environment in which creativity was encouraged. In high school, she studied drawing and painting, and subsequently studied photography at Adirondack Community College. After college, she wanted to return to painting, but
found no openings for painting classes. However, she did find a pottery class, which she tried, and has been doing pottery ever since. Whitney creates handmade pieces that can be both used and enjoyed. Her work is primarily of mugs, bowls, plates and vases. She endeavors to transform the clay and glaze, which are basic substances quite literally from the Earth, into elegant and ele-
vated pieces. When creating, Whitney envisions an object that is pleasing to both aesthetic and tactile senses. She progresses to the design once she fires the piece a first time. Then a grid is drawn on the piece so that the final drawing can be painted on the object. Her influences come from a range including Ancient Greek and Roman to Art
Nouveau and Art Deco. The final design becomes a series of geometric shapes, which can be combined into a pattern one might liken to the exotic qualities of the Orient or the simplicity of Pennsylvania Dutch. “I am excited to be the selected artist for First Friday at the Slate Valley Museum,” Whitney said. “I love our town and the museum is a great venue to showcase my work.”
Whitney’s pottery will be for sale. There will also be a kids’ crafting activity working with modeling clay. First Friday events at the library and museum run from 7-9 p.m. April 7. Admission is free. Contact the Pember Library, located at 33 W Main St., at 518-642-2525. The Slate Valley Museum, located at 17 Water St., can be reached at 518-642-1417.

Whitehall Canal Fest to be held July 14-15 Skenesborough Park will be the place to be on the weekend of July 14-15. The annual Whitehall Canal Festival, which will kick off at 6 p.m. on Friday July 14, has been a staple of Whitehall for more than 30 years and marks the beginning of summer with a variety of activities for all ages. The event begins with the popular cake booth, where festival-goers place a wager on their lucky numbers and a roulette wheel is spun – if it lands on your number, you win a cake. Inside the picnic shelter, ladies from Skene Manor will be cooking up fried bread dough and the Whitehall Guild will be providing thirst-quenching lemonade and iced tea. “On both days there will be children’s games, cotton candy and popcorn too,” said Carol Greenough, treasurer of the Canal Festival committee. The food and games run until 9 p.m. Vendors will also be present, hawking their wares. Live music will be provided at 7 p.m. by the Steel Pier Jazz Band, which is returning for a third consecutive year. Originally formed in the 1970s as “The Dixie Daddies,” the band performed on the Lake George cruise boats for many years. Although many of the members are retired, they still
enjoy bringing their tunes to the area. On Saturday, the festival picks up at noon with a chicken barbecue and many of the same vendors, food and rides. The Wings Clydesdales will also be offering free horse and carriage rides to the end of Main Street and back from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. “Lots of people take advantage of that,” Greenough said. The band Freewheelin’ takes to the amphitheater stage at 7:30 p.m. “They do rock and they do music people like to listen to,” Greenough said. Following Freewheelin’s performance, at 9:30 p.m., the night sky will be lit with brilliant fireworks. When Canal Fest ends, it doesn’t mean the show doesn’t go on. Bands will be taking to the bandstand in Riverside Veterans Memorial Park every Friday through Aug. 25. The Moonlighters are slated for July 15; Donnie P. and Celebration Family will turn up the polka on July 28; big band Enerjazz is set for Aug. 4; Willie Playmore, a contemporary group is scheduled for Aug. 11; country music will be brought to the stage Aug. 18 courtesy of the Bluebillies; and the Washington County Concert Band rounds out the summer concert season on Aug. 25.
Legacy Ride July 22 Granville American Legion Post 323 will hold its annual Legacy Ride on Saturday, July 22, with the focus this year on veterans’ benefits. Proceeds from the event will go to the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund, which helps the children of fallen and disabled post-9/11 servicemembers, as well as the Adirondack House in Glens Falls, which provides a place for homeless veterans to get back on their feet. Kickstands go up at 11
a.m. at the Legion rooms on Columbus Street. The route takes riders on Route 30 into Vermont, with a stop at the Vergennes American Legion for some food and snacks, then down Route 22A to Granville, arriving at 4 or 5 p.m. for hamburgers, hotdogs and raffles at the Legion. Previous years have attracted around 60 bikes and 80 riders. Registration for this ride begins at 9 a.m. at the Granville American Legion, $20 per bike and $10 per rider.

Bancroft Contracting Corporation is a Maine-based self-performing industrial construction company. We work on dams and we build huge fish passages. We work in paper mills and other big industrial plants. Sometimes we build giant foundations and industrial buildings. We build really cool projects all over New England. We’ve been in business since 1977. We pay well and we have a great benefit package. We need heavy construction laborers, form carpenters, and welders for a project in Chittenden VT starting right away. You need to have reliable transportation. You need to be energetic and able to do hard physical work for at least 10 hours a day in all weather conditions. You need to know how to use some basic construction tools. It’s no-go if you have a drug problem, if you have to be in court twice a week, or if you have transportation problems that make you miss work a lot. Pay depends on ability and experience. We’ll be working a lot of overtime this summer. We can use a few people with no construction experience if you can show up every day, work hard, and learn. If you have proven experience in heavy construction so much the better -- we pay top dollar for skilled journey-level craft people. Bancroft Contracting takes good care of its people, and people here work hard to take good care of our company. If this sounds interesting to you call me, Harold Skelton, and we’ll talk. I won’t BS you, and you won’t BS me -- sound about right? I look forward to hearing from you! Call (207) 743-8946.
