Wells Variety Day, a tradition in the Vermont town for more than 30 years, will be staged by the Modern Woodmen of America for the third year this Saturday, featuring a day of food, vendors and music. The Wells United Methodist Church had handled Variety Day for decades, but as the event grew it became too large of an undertaking for the members of the church. Andrea Rathbun, vice president of the MWA, wanted to honor the tradition of Variety Day as best she could. “It really has not changed,” said Rathbun. “We tried to keep it as similar as we could. A lot of our members are members of the Methodist Church.” This year, about 25 vendors will be selling a wide variety of products; some vendors are Young Living Oils, LulaRoe, Lewis’ maple products, and homemade baked goods. There will also be a food booth with hot dogs, hamburgers, sausage with peppers and onions, potato salad, strawberry shortcake and more. DJ Brent Tuttle will be playing some tunes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event starts at 8 a.m. and lasts until 4 p.m. on the MWA grounds at 10 Main St.

Continued from front page recent addition, a jet. The jet weighs 53 pounds, has a wing span of 10-feet and has reached speeds of more thanover 200 mph. “It’s certainly going to be exciting for anyone to see that,” Galligan said. Beginning at 10 a.m. the pilots will be “open flying” during which time they fly their aircraft over the airport informally. At noon the club will present an hour-long show that will feature a “warbird fly-by” and a variety of other aircraft. Following the show, the public will be allowed into the fly zone for an up-close look at the aircraft and to speak with the pilots. The public can also vote for Best in Show; last year pilot Phil Camp was the winner with his giant-scale C-47 transport. After some time the public will be escorted out of the fly zone and “open flying” will recommence until the day’s closure at 4 p.m. The Fun Fly will also offer fresh-cooked food such as hot dogs, hamburgers, fries and salads, as well as beverages. Bathroom facilities will be accessible throughout the day. Galligan suggests that spectators bring lawn chairs for comfort. The RC Flyers were founded in the early 1970s, and is a chartered club associated with the Academy of Model Aeronautics. The founding coincided with a surge of public interest in the hobby. In recent years the hobby has seen a resurgence of interest, thanks largely to the drones (multi-rotors) being made available to the public. “People found out hey, these things are pretty easy to fly,” said Galligan, “but it’s important to remember that

an old airplane hangar is reached. For more information about the event or RC Flyers, visit www.rcflyers.org. The website includes links to a YouTube page which allows viewers to see some of these planes in action.

The 4-8th grade boys and girls clinic will be from 10 a.m. to noon with check-in and walk-up registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. The 9-12th grade boys and girls check-in and

The clinic directors this year will be Scott Allen, Bob Prenevost, Todd Roberts and Tim Barrett. Prenevost is the Fair Haven boys basketball coach and has more than 400 wins in 40-plus seasons. He is listed in the VBCA Hall of Fame. As a ’97 grad, Roberts is an All Time Leading Scorer at

Fair Haven, and was an NCAA Division II All-American at St. Michael’s College. Barrett is in his 16th year of coaching women’s basketball at Castleton University and a fivetime NAC Coach of the Year. Special guests will include Paul Culpo, the Castleton University men’s basketball coach, and Mike Wood, the Rutland High School varsity boys coach. Special celebrity guest will be former UVM coach Tom Brennan (1986-2005). He will attend both clinics to speak to the campers. Brennan was acquainted with Mike and the Roberts family, so when Allen

told him about the memorial clinic and asked if he’d come, “he said he would do it, which was a surprise to both of us that he would do something like this,” said Joyce Roberts, wife of the late Mike Roberts. Scott Allen is the head coach at Paul VI High School in Fairfax, Virginia. He has received several state and national accolades as a basketball coach, and was a 1993 Fair Haven Union High School graduate. Allen was also a friend of Roberts, and felt that the school needed new basketball rims, so he helped to set up the memorial clinic in Roberts’ memory to help raise the about $20,000.

“Scott has worked very hard to get the coaches and to do the coaching,” said Roberts. Last year the clinic raised about $9,000, and this year they’re hoping to reach the final goal. Fifty kids attended the clinic last year, and more are expected this year. After the goal is reached and the rims are replaced, Allen and Roberts hope to keep the memorial clinic going and give scholarships in memory of Mike Roberts. “It’s something we never expected,” said Joyce Roberts. “Our family is so grateful that the coaches do this.”

‘Yarn bomb’ in the making For those who knit, crochet, or make other yarn-related crafts, hoarding yarn seems to come with the territory. If you fit into this demographic and have more yarn than you know what to do with, you may be interested in donating clean, tangle-free yarn balls and skeins to the Manchester Community Library. All types of yarns are needed, ranging in color, texture

and thickness, for use in creating the library’s first Yarn Bomb. This Yarn Bomb is a type of “fiber graffiti.” Rather than some more permanent types of street art, Yarn Bombing uses fiber to cover public places varied types of crocheted, knitted, knotted, felted, or any other type of yarn art. Janet Kleinberg, youth services librarian, said the event will

unfold in the coming months. Anyone interested in donating to this fibrous flash mob can take their yarn to the Manchester Community Library at the corner of 138 Cemetery Avenue and Route 7A in Manchester Center, Vermont. For more information, call Janet at the Library at 802-5494580.

Hubbardton Day Castleton library offers summer programs celebration set for July 22

Castleton Libary Corner

Happy Summer everyone! The weather is warm and inviting… so don’t forget to check out our passes to the local attractions and come to the library for our summer programs. On Sunday, July 16, at 1 p.m. the Friends of the Library will be hosting the program, “The Conscience of a Quaker: Attica, Upholding the law when the State was breaking it; Sanctuary, Breaking the law when the Feds were abusing it.” The talk will be given by Malcolm Bell, author of “The Attica Turkey Shoot: Carnage, Cover-up and the Pursuit of Justice.” Mr. Bell will also discuss his participation in the Sanctuary Movement and his activities supporting released prisoners. Mr. Bell, a native of Brooklyn & son of a lawyer, went to the Polytechnic Preparatory Country Day

County Route 18 Hampton, NY

518-282-9030

School, graduated from Harvard University and cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1953. After a stint in the Army, he worked for a NY Wall Street law firm for 10 years and lived the corporate life, eventually moving to Darien, Connecticut. He became interested in criminal law & in 1973, 15 years out of law school, he answered a blind advertisement for prosecutors in The New York Law Journal and wound up being hired as a NY State Prosecutor for the Attica team. He fought the state cover-up following the riots & represented inmates. He eventually moved to Weston, VT with his present wife, Nancy. He became an activist in the Sanctuary Movement of the 1980s. Malcolm himself broke the law to stand in solidarity with — and offer safe-haven to — illegal refugees fleeing the brutali-

ty of state-led and US-assisted terror in Guatemala and El Salvador. Malcolm divides his efforts between writing and non-violent activism against war, torture, and imperialism. It should be a very enlightening and interesting program and we hope to see you at the library on Sunday. Also, once again, the Library is participating in the “Passport to Libraries” program. Come by the library to pick up your passport or to have your passport stamped. There are prizes to win in three categories: Adult, Young Adult and Child. The Program ends Sept. 1 so hurry in! Lastly, new books and DVDs have arrived and more are on their way. Stop in, say hello to friends and neighbors and see what’s new at the Castleton Free Library!!

By Suzannah Van Gelder The annual Hubbardton Day celebration returns for its third year of food, fun, and fireworks on Saturday, July 22, at the Hubbardton Battlefield on Monument Hill Road. Tents will be provided, but attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket. “It’s a pretty active day,” said event spokesman Dick Nordmeyer. “There’s plenty to do for everybody.” The event begins at 4 p.m. with various children’s activities complete with prizes and surprises, as well as pick up volleyball games and a corn hole toss competition for the adults. Back this year is the popular “females only” frying panthrowing contest, which draws many worthy competi-

tors and a captivated audience. There will also be a kids and “senior ladies” throwing contest and cash prizes for all winners of the adult contests. Throughout the day there will be three raffles, one with cash prizes, a “what’s your pleasure” jar raffle, and a hand-stitched quilt raffle. Talented face painter Kathryn Grossarth will return this year to work her “magic” and dazzle with her creative art. Throughout the day, water, fried bread dough, and souvenir T-shirts will be for sale. From 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m., Hubbardton Center Grange 290 will offer a pig roast and chicken barbecue, with “all the fixin’s” and free ice cream. Tickets for the pig

Fair Haven Concerts in the Park next Thursday, July 20 begin-

ning at 7 p.m. This concert is the sixth of ten Fair Haven Concerts for the 2017 summer season. This band includes five trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones, a guitar, a bass, a drummer, a keyboard player, as well as vocalists. Audience members can expect to hear melodies from such well known band leaders as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Glenn Miller, to name a few. More modern tunes are included in the set lists, so there is music for everyone to enjoy. Enerjazz promises that attendees will feel like dancing, their toes will be tapping and they may even want to clap and sing along. The concerts begin promptly at 7p.m., but attendees can always come early to enjoy the park. There is a short intermission when door prizes are drawn. These door prizes are generously donated by our local businesses and we give out door prizes for both youth and adults. Concerts do go on rain or shine. The rain location is the Baptist Church at the south end of the park.

Bancroft Contracting Corporation is a Maine-based self-performing industrial construction company. We work on dams and we build huge fish passages. We work in paper mills and other big industrial plants. Sometimes we build giant foundations and industrial buildings. We build really cool projects all over New England. We’ve been in business since 1977. We pay well and we have a great benefit package. We need heavy construction laborers, form carpenters, and welders for a project in Chittenden VT starting right away. You need to have reliable transportation. You need to be energetic and able to do hard physical work for at least 10 hours a day in all weather conditions. You need to know how to use some basic construction tools. It’s no-go if you have a drug problem, if you have to be in court twice a week, or if you have transportation problems that make you miss work a lot. Pay depends on ability and experience. We’ll be working a lot of overtime this summer. We can use a few people with no construction experience if you can show up every day, work hard, and learn. If you have proven experience in heavy construction so much the better -- we pay top dollar for skilled journey-level craft people. Bancroft Contracting takes good care of its people, and people here work hard to take good care of our company. If this sounds interesting to you call me, Harold Skelton, and we’ll talk. I won’t BS you, and you won’t BS me -- sound about right? I look forward to hearing from you! Call (207) 743-8946.
