Hubbardton celebrates Music, activities, and fireworks highlight third ‘Hubbardton Days’ By Suzannah Van Gelder The annual Hubbardton Day celebration returns for its third year of food, fun, and fireworks on Saturday, July 22, at the Hubbardton Battlefield on Monument Hill Road. Tents will be provided, but attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket. “It’s a pretty active day,” said event spokesman Dick Nordmeyer. “There’s plenty to do for everybody.” The event begins at 4 p.m. with various children’s activities complete with prizes and surprises, as well as pick up volleyball games and a corn hole toss competition for the adults. Back this year is the popular “females only” frying pan-throwing contest, which draws many worthy competitors and a captivated audience. There will also be a kids and “senior ladies” throwing contest and cash prizes for all winners

of the adult contests. Throughout the day there will be three raffles, one with cash prizes, a “what’s your pleasure” jar raffle, and a hand-stitched quilt raffle. Talented face painter Kathryn Grossarth will return this year to work her “magic” and dazzle with her creative art. Throughout the day, water, fried bread dough, and souvenir T-shirts will be for sale. From 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m., Hubbardton Center Grange 290 will offer a pig roast and chicken barbecue, with “all the fixin’s” and free ice cream. Tickets for the pig roast and barbecue are $12, $6 for children under 10. For advance tickets call 802-273-2651 or 802-273-2951. There will be no shortage of music, either. In the evening Steve Kyhill and David Hughes will provide the music, and the Mt. Independence Seth Warner Fife and Drum Corps will perform. After dinner, square dancing will be held under the

Editor: As summer has arrived and we have time to reflect on another school year, there are many great things that our staff and students did here at Poultney High School, and I would like to highlight just a few of them. • This year, Poultney High School was one of a handful of Vermont schools to be honored with a US News and World Report national ranking with a bronze ranking. • Our students were above the state average in the majority of statewide assessment tests. • Our students participated in Model Congress in Springfield, MA against schools from all over the northeast, and PHS teams passed all three bills through their committees, including one that had a unanimous vote. • PHS students won numerous art awards in local, statewide and regional competitions. Our band and chorus students also participated in numerous state and local concerts.

• We were able to bring our entire student body down to New York City for a day and visited the 911 Memorial Museum as well as other local attractions. • PHS students attending Stafford Tech Center won several awards at the statewide competition and one attended the national competition in June. In order for a school to be successful as ours, it not only takes a caring and talented staff, but also lots and lots of support from the community. I would personally like to thank all of the community members and businesses that have helped support our students and allow them opportunities to grow and learn throughout the year. Special thanks to First Light for their generous donations that helped fund our New York City trip. I would also like to thank all of the organizations that support PHS year in and year out, especially those that provided scholarships for our seniors at graduation. A special thank you to the

Poultney Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad for all of their support throughout the year during our sporting events and our pep rallies and parades, the Poultney Rotary Club for their continued support and help with our Interact Club, and all the other community organizations that have helped support us one way or another this year. I constantly remind the students how blessed we are to live in a community where they support our youths and schools. As we move into another school year, we are excited to see all of the great learning experiences and opportunities that await our students. I am looking forward to not only working with the youth, but also the businesses and organizations that make Poultney a great town and Poultney High School a wonderful school. Thank you all, and let’s keep that Poultney Pride going. Sincerely, Joe DeBonis, Poultney High School principal

Twig Remembers Clarence “Skippy” Rogers He wasn’t quite the singer that his Uncle Roy was, but that scruffy little voice could blast one out with the best of them. And if you didn’t catch his homemade rendition of Charlie Pride’s “Is anybody going to San Antone,” then you missed something very special. Now Skippy and I go way back to the Hampton Manor days. Now, the Vermont bars had to close by 1:00. So, after 1:00 they were all filtering into the Manor. We were just over the border in New York and were open ‘til 3 a.m. Fun! Wow! There were groups from every town around and we got to know them all.

Some we already knew because we played ball against them. You see back in those days we had the best band around and if it was Friday or Saturday night you probably went to the Manor. The Wallingford gang were always the last to show up; probably had to stop at Skippy’s barn to pick up a jug of “Kickapoo joy juice” for the ride. In they’d come; oh, God were they smoked. All were happy; some were a little frisky; but that’s why we had those six big bouncers. And then there was “Skippy” (That’s what we always called

him). Oh, he was smiling and having a helluva time. There were sixty stools at the big oval bar and he would go around visiting everybody. And if he saw something he liked, you’d hear, “Girlie, can I guy you a drink?” Oh, what a happy little guy. We couldn’t wait ‘til he got there. Skippy, God bless you. Now when you see my brother “Hot Rod” don’t forget the greeting you always shared, “Laddy, laddy, laddy.” “Happy Trails to you, ‘til we meet again.” Oh, I bet he had his own version of that one, too.

dandy. Hope I can remember it long enough to tell Herm.” The owner comes by. “There he is.” “Bob, why the heck are you always movin’ stuff, where’s the Colgate?” “Right over here where it’s always been.” “Well, why in the heck is it that I can’t ever find things?” “Don’t worry Peg, that’s what Twig and I are for; we’ll help you.” Oh, she had this beautiful old fashioned barnyard philosophy with a cure for almost everything. And she wasn’t at all afraid to let you know where the bear crapped in the buckwheat, either. What a beautiful person. I didn’t realize how much I missed the little rascal.

Peg, God bless you. I am going to end with the song I sang every time she entered the store. Peg o’ my heart, I love you. Don’t let us part, I love you. I always knew, it would be you. Since I’ve heard your wilting laughter, it’s your Irish heart I’m after. Peg o’ my heart. Peg, when you get to heaven, don’t let up – give ‘em heck! The world could surely use more Peg Crandalls just to liven things up a bit. We are going to be needin’ them real soon!
