Pawlet book sale celebrates 50 years “They line up before we’re open like it’s Black Friday at Walmart. Then, there’s a mad dash.” That’s how Adelle Seamans, assistant librarian, described the Pawlet Public Library’s annual book sale. Bibliophiles of all ages travel from all over Vermont, New York, Massachusetts and New Hampshire to peruse the library’s collection of books, Seamans said. “It’s one of the largest in the state,” said library director Melissa Curtis. The two-day sale is celebrating its 50th year this weekend, July 29-30. When asked why she thinks the sale has lasted half of a century, Seamans said:
Prizes will be given to the top 25 vehicles, best in show, and crowd favorite. There will also be plenty of prizes and raffles, with prizes being given out around twice every 15 minutes. Gift certificates, goodie bags, and even a Hubbardton Forge lamp have been given out in

Police looking for Poultney armed robbery suspect Vermont State Police are looking for a suspect they say robbed a Poultney gas station at gunpoint Tuesday evening. On July 25, 2017, at approximately 6:38 p.m., troopers from the Vermont State Police-Rutland barracks, responded to an armed robbery complaint at the Irving gas station, located at 267 Main Street in Poultney. Upon meeting with store employees, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing video footage, it was learned that a lone white male subject entered the

The Fair Haven Police Department will host its 12th annual National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 1, in the Fair Haven Town Park, starting at 5:30 p.m. and lasting until 7:30 or 8 p.m., depending on daylight and participation. “We’ve averaged 300-400 people,” said Fair Haven Police Chief William Humphries. “It’s a good opportunity to meet with the police officers…and gets people out in the community to see what’s available to them.” Humphries has invited dozens of local agencies to attend, including BROC, victim’s advocates, Rutland County Sheriffs, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and state’s attorney. Each organization will set up an informational booth and some will also have activities to engage the public. Always a crowd favorite, the dunking booth is slated to return. “That’s probably the biggest thing,” Humphries said. “They like to get a shot at me…the kids love it.” Additionally, the sheriffs are slated to bring a roll-over simulator. The simulator is half of a car in which the sheriffs place dummies and

Otto’s ice cream draws praise By Suzannah Van Gelder I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream, and Otto’s Cones Point General Store has plenty to shout about these days. The restaurant has been listed as one of the best ice cream shops in Vermont. On July 13 the website Onlyinyourstate. com, which helps its readers discover fun things to do in all 50 states, posted an article entitled “These 13 Ice Cream Shops in Vermont Will Make Your Sweet Tooth Go Crazy” and Poultney’s own ice cream shop was ranked at lucky number 7. Otto’s Cones Point General Store, located at 3816 Route 30 South, has only been open since last June, when Chris and Rosie Beckmann took ownership and quickly turned it into quite the business. Not only do they sell delicious ice cream, they also
serve yummy burgers, hot dogs, specialty sandwiches, salads and breakfast items. They also provide catering services, and even have an in-house baker. For those who want to work up an appetite before dinner, Otto’s Cone Point also has minigolf for kids and kids-at-heart to enjoy. Otto’s hosts fun music events titled “Music at the Moose” every weekend this summer as well as other fun cultural events. Otto’s is also Vermont’s fish and wildlife licensing and reporting station and even sells live bait. Proof that this general store has something for everyone. At the end of the day, it all comes down to the ice cream. Otto’s has 12 flavors of Wilcox’s hard ice cream that will satisfy any sweet tooth as well as two flavors of creamies. “Save room for their maple-vanilla ice-
cream, which is superb,” says an online article. So how does Otto’s Cones feel about this sweet recommendation? Beckmann says he’s “pleasantly surprised.” In fact, he did not even know that there was an article until someone saw it online and reported it to the store. “People come up and tell us that they saw it on the TV or online,” said Beckmann. He said that business has been good this summer, and he owes it all the community. “When we first moved up here we didn’t know a soul, so this has been built with lots of love by the community members,” Beckmann said. “We are so lucky, so blessed.” Otto’s Cones Point General Store is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. year-around. For more information, call (802) 287-9925, visit www.ottosconespoint.com or follow them on Facebook.

Vermont Reads books at Castleton Free Library They’ve arrived – a box filled with 75 new copies of the 2017 Vermont Reads book, Brown Girl Dreaming, thanks to a grant through the Vermont Humanities Council. This year’s title is a memoir written in exquisite yet simple free verse by award-winning author Jacqueline Woodson, chronicling her childhood and coming-of-age during the 1960’s and 1970’s. The book simultaneously gives its readers glimpses through a child’s eyes of events during this tumultuous era in United States history and reflections from an adult perspective. The New York Times Book Review says that the triumph of this novel “…is not just in how well Woodson tells us the story of her life, but in how elegantly she writes words that make us want to hold those carefully crafted poems close,
apply them to our lives, reach into the mirror she holds up and make the words and the worlds she explores our own.” With universal themes of family, place and home, religion, race relations and the importance of stories, this is a perfect book to distribute far and wide, to focus community book discussions, and to inspire creative programming in the library. Several formal programs centered on the book will be offered over the next three months, including intergenerational book discussions, a memoir writing group, and a multimedia (film clips, music, and art) evening – dates to be announced. Because the writing is so accessible, copies of the book will be shared with students in fourth through eighth grades, with an invitation to present their work at a final program

To entice golfers to the green, school athletic director and baseball coach Keith Redmond has paired with Autosaver Ford of Comstock to bring a tantalizing prize to the tourney – a 2017 Mustang. “I made a phone call last week,” Redmond said. “Autosaver Ford in Comstock was very generous in donating a Mustang to own, not lease…it has a Roush package on it.” Redmond said the prize is up for grabs in a hole-in-one competition that’s part of the tourney. The hole golfers must ace is number nine and the distance has to be at least 165 yards, and there must be three witnesses to the momentous occasion. Understandably, Autosaver will also have an independent witness on hand as well. “You know how golfers are,” Redmond said with a chuckle. The tournament is a fourperson scramble and will kick off at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Registration fee is $50 which will include cart, green fees and lunch. Mulligans, skin game, closest-to-pin and raffles will also be available for golfers. All proceeds go toward funding a 2018 baseball spring training trip at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida. Interested golfers can call the club at 499-1685 or email Redmond at kredmond@railroaders.net to sign up.

“People love a bargain.” She said the sale has grown over the years. It started as a one-day sale at a local church and grew from there. “It’s gotten bigger and bigger and bigger,” Seamans said. “I think it’s made it this far because everybody has the love of books,” she added. “Even though we all have e-readers and everything, people still love to be able to throw a book in their bag … and just have that physical book in their hands, with the

The sale, which is held at the Mettawee Community School, will feature books, DVDs, CDs, videos, puzzles, games, toys and more – items donated by individuals and other nearby libraries, as well as what is being cleaned out of the Pawlet library. There will be more than 20,000 items for sale. Books range from children’s’ books to mystery novels and fiction tales. Hard cover books are $2. Trade paperbacks are $1 and regular paperbacks are five for $1. There are also rare and collectible selections for sale. All of the books that are not sold will be donated to Better World Books, an organization that distributes books to libraries and start-up schools in third world countries. “We just pass it on,” Seamans said. To mark its half-century, the library is selling keepsake tote bags with the 50th anniversary logo on them. Each bag is $2 and can be purchased at the library ahead of time or on the day of the sale. The totes are perfect for the bag sale, which starts at noon on Sunday, Seamans said. Also in attendance will be guest author Bill Torrey, fourtime winner of NPR’s Moth StorySLAM, who will be storytelling in the library lobby from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday. His current collection of short stories “The Ta Ta Weenie Club” will be available for sale and autographing. “He is a seventh-generation Vermonter,” Seamans said. There will also be a bake sale with “homemade and delicious” items and a raffle for Telescope Casual outdoor furniture and an item from Manchester Wood. The sale, which is hosted completely by volunteers, is one of the library’s biggest fundraisers. All proceeds will go toward the Pawlet Public Library and the new materials and programs it plans to implement. Seamans said the library plans this year to expand its collection by purchasing more print and audio books and DVDs.
