Bomoseen Derby, a popular tradition It’s the third instalment of a popular four-part ice fishing series, and it’s a Valentine’s weekend tradition. The annual Lake Bomoseen Ice Fishing Derby draws anglers from all over Vermont and bordering New York, with one goal – catching the biggest fish in a variety of different categories. Anglers will be vying for the opportunity to catch brown trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike and yellow perch. Awards are given to the top four fish in each of the following categories: pike, bass and trout. “There is a ton of awards,” said Stan Patch, one of the event’s organizers and a member of the
Castleton Lions. Door prizes are also given out during the derby, and they will be announced closer to the derby. Each year, the event is held in honor of Tom Evanoika, the event’s original organizer, and his friend and fishing compadre “Bomoseen” Bob Newton. Proceeds from the event go toward the various projects that the Castleton Lions participate in. Those projects include sight and hearing programs, school projects, Halloween parties and many others. Proceeds also benefit some of the charities that the Castleton Lions are involved with. The annual event is put on by the Castleton Lions Club and is the penultimate derby of the Central
Vermont Lakes Region Ice Fishing Derby. The first two derbies are the Lake Champlain Down Home Derby and the Lake Hortonia Derby; the final derby is the Great Benson Derby. Results from all four derbies are combined at the end of the series and the winner of the aggregate goes home with an additional prize. Points are awarded for each first place fish, second place fish, third place fish and tickets purchased. As is tradition, the next installment of the Lake Bomoseen Ice Fishing Derby will take place on Valentine’s Day weekend 2017. More details on the event will be available as it draws closer.
The 38th annual Lake Bomoseen Ice Fishing Derby is expected to be held Feb. 14 & 15.

Colonial Day Tour a favorite in August There’s plenty of history in this area, and that’s not lost on the members of the Castleton Women’s Club. Each and every year, during the month of August, members of the Castleton Women’s Club take the community on a trip back to the Colonial era. The event, known as the Castleton Colonial Day House Tour, has been a staple in the community for 78 years. According to the Woman’s Club’s website, “This annual self-guided tour features outstanding private homes and historic sites, exhibits of antique tools, carriages, a period clothing collection, displays and demonstrations of Early American crafts.” Many on the tour get dressed up in garb from the Colonial era, giving the event a true, authentic vibe. The tour includes 20 sites throughout the village of Castleton, from period homes and historical sites to public buildings and galleries. Perhaps the most popular location on the self-guided tour is the

Dake, a prominent builder of the day. Dake’s influence doesn’t stop at the church, though. Many of the houses included on the tour have pieces of Dake’s architecture in them.
Another prominent building featured on the tour is the Higley House, which is a home base for the Castleton Historical Society. At the Higley House, tour-goers can look through displays including period fashion and accessories, quilts, antique tools and carriages. One of the most popular displays present at the Higley House is the Blue Cat Quilt, “a point of pride for the town and Historical Society.” The quilt depicts scenes from historic Castleton and the 1949 children’s novel, “The Blue Cat of Castle Town.” The novel, by Catherine Coblentz, tells the story of a blue kitten that goes around town, helping the people of Castelton with various problems. On the Barnes and Noble website, the novel receives a 5 out of 5 rating. This year’s event is set for Saturday, Aug. 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tour tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and free for kids age 12 and under. Castleton Free Public Library The Castleton Free Library, located at 638 Main St. in Castleton, offers a myriad of different programs and activities throughout the year. Thanks to generous volunteers and two part-time staff members, the library doesn’t stop at the basic level of book and movie lending. It is able to offer everything from concerts and parties to book sales and speaking engagements. The library can also help visitors with doing taxes online or creating a resume. E-books are available to download at the library, adding to the list of hardcopy books already available. Some of the many services the library has offered in recent months include a Falconry program. Upcoming programs include beginner ballroom dancing lessons, which are set to take place Sept. 7 from 7-8:30 p.m.
The Castleton Free Library. Ongoing programs at the library include weekly preschool story hour on Friday at 10:30 a.m., a summer reading program for kids, and a LEGO Club on Saturday from 10:15-11:45 a.m. The library also offers free wifi and the ability to access other books through an interlibrary loan program. The library also offers more than 500 free online courses, which can be taken with a library card. Jan Jones serves as the
library director/children’s services librarian, and Mary Kearns is the adult services librarian/tech watchdog. One organization that helps the library a tremendous amount is the “Friends of Castleton Free Library.” Last year, the group helped toys for kids and outside lighting at the library. This year, they helped install a new walkway at the library. The engraved brick walkway was officially opened June 11,
with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Friends of the Library member Nancy Mark said, “Over 100 bricks are installed commemorating loved ones and volunteers at the library. The walkway is dedicated to community involvement and pride in Castleton.” She added, “We had seen examples of walkways in other places and we thought it would enhance our library.” The library is open from 3-8 p.m. on Monday; 2-6 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday; 3-8 p.m. on Thursday; 10 a.mn. to 6 p.m. on Friday; 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday; and is closed on Sunday. Anyone wanting more information on the library, its events and volunteer opportunities, can check out the Facebook page: facebook.com/castletonfreelibrary, visit the website castletonfreelibrary.org, or call 802-4685574 during hours of operation.

History of Castleton Castleton was chartered in 1761. The charter for 36 square miles of land was granted by Gov. Benning Wentworth of New Hampshire and divided the land into 70 "rights" or "shares." Wentworth retained ownership of two shares, and several others were given for churches and a school. Col. Bird. He had acquired 40 shares of land when the town was chartered and built a permanent residence there in the summer of 1769. Three families had settled in Castleton by 1770. More settlers followed, and by 1777 the town consisted of 17 families. In May 1775 Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys met in Castleton with Benedict Arnold to plan their next day's attack on Fort Ticonderoga, 30 miles west, on the New York side of Lake Champlain. Although German soldiers were stationed in Castleton for a time in 1777, they left as the fortunes of the war changed, and Tory sympathizers were treated with scorn by

Castleton settlers. Following the war, Castleton continued to grow as an agricultural community. Farmers raised cattle, then sheep. Saw mills and gristmills were established. During the 19th century the slate and marble industries thrived in and around Castleton. The railroad came in 1854, and the last half of the century saw the development of tourism around Lake Bomoseen. In the 19th century Castleton flourished, and many residents built elaborate houses

A trolley system ran from the center of town to Lake Bomoseen, a destination for tourists vacationing during the summer. The Hydeville area flourished in the mid-19th century as a slate quarrying and milling center. Between 1900 and 1940 several fires occurred in Castleton Village, Castleton Corners and Hydeville, as well as at the lakeside resorts.
