Patsy Continued from front page America,” says the Courtney Shayne website, capturing the essence of Patsy Cline in both voice and spirit. Shayne has toured the country, from California to New York City, with rave reviews. She has performed on stage for more than 18 years and is a native of New York’s Capital Region, where she lives with her husband and two young sons. She holds awards from both Schenectady Light Opera Company and Theater Association of New York State. Shayne said she got the motivation to bring Patsy Cline songs and story to audience by a lifelong affinity for her music, as well as “a nudge from my grandfather.” Patsy Cline’s best-known country classics include “Crazy”, “I Fall to Pieces,” “Walkin’ After Midnight” and many others. Cline died tragically in a plane crash in 1963 at the age of 30. The show will start at 7 p.m. on Saturday and tickets are $15. Advance tickets will be available at Post 49 after 1 p.m. on Saturday until they are sold out. For more information, visit http://www.courtneyshayne. com or call 802-263-7983.

Letters to the Editor Garden Clubs says thanks The Slate Valley Garden Club would like to thank the community and our neighbors for making this year’s annual plant and bake sale, “Bloom Thyme,” an overwhelming success. Whether you stopped by to buy baked goods, choose a plant, buy some raffle tickets, or make a donation, you helped us to raise much needed funds. These funds are used for our yearly scholarships to gradu-
ating high school seniors, to continue beautification projects in the Granville village, and to support numerous local civic organizations and community services that count on our support. We would like to extend a special thank you to Tractor Supply Company Store for generously allowing us the use of their facilities. Their location made our sale highly visible thereby increasing
the number of people who stopped by to visit our sale. It is extremely rewarding to see how our efforts are appreciated and to know that Granville and the surrounding communities support us. Thank you again, Robyn Lipschutz, Chair, Bloom Thyme Slate Valley Garden Club

Paul Wiskoski Now, Paul was in high school when I was, but I can’t figure out if he was two or three years ahead of me. He was one of those guys who was always in the woods. Pickup trucks – always, chain saws, tools, guns. At one point he had a good
logging business. And then his business sense told him that there was room for a pizza business in Hydeville, so he opened up Paul’s Pizza. My favorite was the meatball sub. He and his wife, Judy, ran that for quite a while. Then he had Phil Mallett run it

Loraine M. Calvi For 98 years she was one of the nicest and most respected ladies in all of Fair Haven. Now when you come down with a disease like diabetes, people don’t bail out on you; they just distance themselves as you do them. Old school people are just the opposite. They go out of their way to help. Loraine was a good example of that and I am about to tell you how. In the late 1970’s I had graduated from CSC with a B.S. in Business Management. I had continued my house painting business that had helped me through my college summers. I loved being outdoors as it allowed me all kinds of ideas for my writing. But, eating ten candy bars so I could scrape wasn’t the way to treat my diabetic body. Coming out of Loso’s Dairy Bar one day I saw someone waving from within Wood’s Agency. It was an old
friend from the Hampton Manor days Cecille Sharon. She had a bunch of books and papers laid out before her as she was studying for a real estate test. We talked about real estate and I told her that would be a way to get me away from that hard scraping that painting afforded me. She passed her test and asked me if I would like to borrow her notes to study. That worked out quite well; but when the time came for the test I needed a real estate agency to sponsor me. I entered the office and Cecille, Ned and Loraine were all there. I approached Ned with the idea of the sponsorship and he explained that they were just starting that part of the business and wanted to keep it small. “But Ned, all I want.” I never got it out. Ned was a good businessman, but if he got something in his mind it would be hard to change him. All at once, his soft and gentle wife said,

“Ned, we need to have a talk.” His hands were flailing and he was jabbering a mile a minute as they went into the back office. Ned was so excited he left the door ajar behind him and I heard every word. “Ned, you need to calm down. Don’t you think he’s having enough troubles with his diabetes. All he wants is a chance. And we can give him that chance.” They came out of the office and Ned said, “We’ve changed our mind, where do I sign?” As he was signing, I gave his wife a quiet “Thank you.” An act of kindness like that is something you never, ever want to forget and to be sure that I don’t I still carry that little orange R.E. Hampton for 250 years,” said Hampton supervisor Dave O’Brien. One such descendant was Army Capt. Patrick Smith stationed at Fort Drum in Watertown. Jill Russell, a third great-granddaughter of Warren’s hailing from Yorktown, Virginia delivered a comprehensive history on the life of Warren. Yet another familial relation was Revolutionary War reenactor Tim Smith, who was present to pipe a tune on a fife, much like Warren probably did centuries ago. Warren was born in either 1763 or 1764 in Sunderland, Vermont. At the age of seven Warren and his family moved to Pittsford, Vermont, just north of Rutland. In 1778 the Warrens shifted once more, this time slightly south to Tinmouth, Vermont. One year later, at the age of 15, Bishop enlisted in a company of Vermont militia under the command of Capt. Tahan Noble. Warren was later assigned to Ebenezer Allen’s detachment and served from August 1779 until November 1779. Warren’s name also appears on the payroll as a fifer in a Ranger company under the command of Capt. Parmalee
Allen from February 1780 to December 1780. Following the Revolutionary War, Warren’s father, Gideon Warren, sold his Tinmouth property following the purchase of 500 acres in what was then considered “Greenfield” located in the “Western Union.” This acreage eventually became what is today known as Hampton. Hampton was originally considered a part of Vermont, but when the state border shifted to the Poultney River, the town was incorporated into New York. What remains a mystery is where the name of Hampton originated, instead of being something derived from Warren’s name like Warrensburg. “I never found that part of history,” O’Brien said. Warren uprooted himself several more times during his life, first travelling north up Lake Champlain to South Hero, Vermont before again displacing himself and settling in Canada. There he and his family would continue to live until 1828 when Warren sold his Canadian lands and returned to Hampton. Warren passed away one year later, on March 22, 1829. The stately stone grave marker is on land donated to the town of Hampton by Warren’s father.

Blue Jay Way to play Aug. 10 in Fair Haven Concert Series The Fair Haven Concerts in the Park will feature Blue Jay Way on Thursday, Aug. 10. This group is new to the Concerts in the Park series. They play rock n’ roll and concert goers will enjoy another great evening of entertainment for the whole family. What started out as a duo collaboration in the early 1970’s as students at then Castleton State College has evolved into a musical journey that has spanned five decades for the southern Vermont band known as Blue Jay Way. West Rutland native Dave Sabatino, on bass, and guitarist
Tim Brown of South Burlington hooked up as freshmen at CSC to perform locally at the Checkmate Lounge (now the Iron Lantern) back in 1974, and when a drummer was needed to expand to dance material, Sabatino called on Westside classmate Terry Jarrosak to fill the void. “Dave and I played music together growing up. We were doing the Beatles when the Beatles were still doing the Beatles,” joked Jarrosak, who is well known in the area as Terry Jaye, the morning DJ at WJJR. “Those were great times in

But it was a haven to us. We developed our musical chops there.” The trio expanded over the years with local musicians

coming and going, but they have assembled a solid core in the past few years that includes keyboardist Brad Morgan, guitarist Rob Henrichen and sax players Pete Giancola and Steve MacLaughlin – all of whom have performed with the band Satin and Steel. The seven current members of BJW were invited to perform at the Inaugural Gala for newlyelected Vermont governor Phil
Scott this past January in South Burlington. “I think we all feel pretty fortunate to be able to still get together and play music professionally. Performing is such a rush, and to be able to do it with such talented musicians and great guys makes it a lot of fun. I think that comes across in our music,” said Brown, whose “day job” for the past 30 years has been athletic director at Mt. Anthony Union High School in Bennington. Concerts go on rain or shine. The rain location is the First Congregational Church located at the north end of the park. We thank the Congregational Church for their hospitality. To see if the concert needs to be moved due to inclement weather, please call the Concert Hotline at 802265-3010 at ext. 301 after 4 p.m. on the day of the concert.
