Cline died tragically in a plane crash in 1963 at the age of 30. The show will start at 7 p.m. on Saturday and tickets are $15. Merger chair urges community to attend forum To the Editor, The Pawlet Rupert Merger Study Committee has been working since May 2017 on a merger study for the Pawlet, Rupert, and Mettawee school boards. The committee is in the final stages of completing a Draft Merger Study Report with Articles of Agreement to be sent to the State of Vermont for approval. A public forum will be held on Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Mettawee Community School offering an opportunity for community members to address questions and make comments related to the proposal. Copies of the Study Committee Worksheet and Articles of Agreement and anticipated community questions and answers are available at brsu.org under the Act 46 tab – Pawlet and Rupert Merger

Vendors wanted for town-wide sales Poultney is seeking merchandisers, food makers, crafters, pack-rats and more to sell items at its annual town-wide sale on Saturday, Oct. 14. Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce vendor spaces are filling up quickly, but there are still some available to rent. The Chamber welcomes crafters, food makers, farmers, restaurant owners, nonprofits, school groups, civic groups and of course anyone with yard sale items. logging business. And then his business sense told him that there was room for a pizza business in Hydeville, so he opened up Paul’s Pizza. My favorite was the meatball sub. He and his wife, Judy, ran that for quite a while. Then he had Phil Mallett run it

Loraine M. Calvi For 98 years she was one of the nicest and most respected ladies in all of Fair Haven. Now when you come down with a disease like diabetes, people don’t bail out on you; they just distance themselves as you do them. Old school people are just the opposite. They go out of their way to help. Loraine was a good example of that and I am about to tell you how. In the late 1970’s I had graduated from CSC with a B.S. in Business Management. I had continued my house painting business that had helped me through my college summers. I loved being outdoors as it allowed me all kinds of ideas for my writing. But, eating ten candy bars so I could scrape wasn’t the way to treat my diabetic body. Coming out of Loso’s Dairy Bar one day I saw someone waving from within Wood’s Agency. It was an old

friend from the Hampton Manor days Cecille Sharon. She had a bunch of books and papers laid out before her as she was studying for a real estate test. We talked about real estate and I told her that would be a way to get me away from that hard scraping that painting afforded me. She passed her test and asked me if I would like to borrow her notes to study. That worked out quite well; but when the time came for the test I needed a real estate agency to sponsor me. I entered the office and Cecille, Ned and Loraine were all there. I approached Ned with the idea of the sponsorship and he explained that they were just starting that part of the business and wanted to keep it small. “But Ned, all I want.” I never got it out. Ned was a good businessman, but if he got something in his mind it would be hard to change him. All at once, his soft and gentle wife said,

Poultney Chamber extends ‘Citizen of the Year’ deadline

Hampton for 250 years,” said Hampton supervisor Dave O’Brien. One such descendant was Army Capt. Patrick Smith stationed at Fort Drum in Watertown. Jill Russell, a third great-granddaughter of Warren’s hailing from Yorktown, Virginia delivered a comprehensive history on the life of Warren. Yet another familial relation was Revolutionary War reenactor Tim Smith, who was present to pipe a tune on a fife, much like Warren probably did centuries ago. Warren was born in either 1763 or 1764 in Sunderland, Vermont. At the age of seven Warren and his family moved to Pittsford, Vermont, just north of Rutland. In 1778 the Warrens shifted once more, this time slightly south to Tinmouth, Vermont. One year later, at the age of 15, Bishop enlisted in a company of Vermont militia under the command of Capt. Tahan Noble. Warren was later assigned to Ebenezer Allen’s detachment and served from August 1779 until November 1779. Warren’s name also appears on the payroll as a fifer in a Ranger company under the command of Capt. Parmalee

Allen from February 1780 to December 1780. Following the Revolutionary War, Warren’s father, Gideon Warren, sold his Tinmouth property following the purchase of 500 acres in what was then considered “Greenfield” located in the “Western Union.” This acreage eventually became what is today known as Hampton. Hampton was originally considered a part of Vermont, but when the state border shifted to the Poultney River, the town was incorporated into New York. What remains a mystery is where the name of Hampton originated, instead of being something derived from Warren’s name like Warrensburg. “I never found that part of history,” O’Brien said. Warren uprooted himself several more times during his life, first travelling north up Lake Champlain to South Hero, Vermont before again displacing himself and settling in Canada. There he and his family would continue to live until 1828 when Warren sold his Canadian lands and returned to Hampton. Warren passed away one year later, on March 22, 1829. The stately stone grave marker is on land donated to the town of Hampton by Warren’s father.

Blue Jay Way to play Aug. 10 in Fair Haven Concert Series The Fair Haven Concerts in the Park will feature Blue Jay Way on Thursday, Aug. 10. This group is new to the Concerts in the Park series. What started out as a duo collaboration in the early 1970’s as students at then Castleton State College has evolved into a musical journey that has spanned five decades for the southern Vermont band known as Blue Jay Way. Annual clothing drive set for this week

SCAMP Camp says thank you! The Castleton Community Center hosted the 16th Annual Scamp Camp for area children ages 6-10. Approximately 40 children attended each day for four weeks. The SCAMP program provides a stimulating summer program in an intergenerational setting that nurtures a child’s physical, social and intellectual development. The program is supported by grants

Do you know Carmody’s World War I story and why Poultney’s American Legion Post #39 is named after him? Do you know that another Poultney soldier was alongside Carmody in battle? On Sunday all are welcome to join the St. David’s Society at its 29th anniversary picnic event when Tom Hughes will give a presentation about his grandfather, Llewelyn Hughes, who was beside Carmody in battle when Carmody died. Tom’s grandfather survived and was able to return to his beloved Poultney community and his family. The picnic event is a potluck – bring a luncheon dish to share. Dessert cake, hot coffee and tea will be provided by the St. David’s Society. Staff of J. Claire Carmody Post #39 American Legion will cook the hotdogs and hamburgers. Those will be available for purchase for $3 each. Sodas and bar beverages may be purchased from the Legion. The event will be held rain or shine at J.
