The Granville Hook & Ladder Firemen’s Fair is in full swing at the East Potter Avenue carnival grounds and continues through Saturday night, when it will climax with a fireworks show. The four-day fair features a ferris wheel, merry-go-round, tea cups, pony cart, mystery mansion, live entertainment, fair food and more. Phil Hoyt wowed the crowd on opening night with his country music performance. Kelly & Son, a father-son acous-
Poultney Continued from front page College will be featured as keynote speaker and performer. Dr. Tortolano will hold a “Vermont Music Sampler” program, which will explore the rich history and fascinating musical folklore of Vermont.
Carnival Continued from front page cakes are just some of the attractions at the carnival. There will of course be great food available each night. Wednesday through Friday the fun kicks off at 6 p.m., with an earlier start time on Saturday.
Benson Continued from front page since then it’s been the
tic/electric duo, will take the stage Thursday, followed by One for the Road Band (classic rock) on Friday and Rustic Spirit Band (country and classic rock) on Saturday. All performances are run from 7 to 10 p.m. Food available this year includes fried dough, hot dogs, hamburgers, sausages, fries, fried clams and more. Fair favorites including the Big 9 Wheel and dime toss are also available. The event runs from 5 to 11 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and on Saturday from 3 to 11 p.m., with a fireworks show starting at 10:30 p.m. Volunteer firefighters at the Granville Hook & Ladder Fire Company say this year’s event is the largest one yet, prompt-
ing the change of name for the long-time carnival to “fair.” Next year, the fair hopes to have tractor and truck pull events, said Hooks president Dan Roberts. “Each year we are going to take another step forward,” he said. The fair is a major fundraiser for the fire company. Profits will go toward truck and building maintenance, gear for firefighters and equipment, Roberts said. Parking and admission is free. Ride bracelets are $25 and individual ride tickets are available. Coupons for ride booklets and wristbands are available at most area businesses. Each coupon marks $5 off.
This program will include a slide presentation, music, commentary from Dr. Tortolano, and a demonstration on one of Poultney Historical Society’s melodeons. East Poultney Day is a day filled with activities, games, food, and most importantly, music! Over 40 different vendors will be in attendance, selling crafts, folk arts, antiques,
collectibles, maple syrup, herbal soaps, handmade pottery and jewelry, and more! Spaces are still available for vendors interested in setting up shop on Aug 12. Vendors and demonstrators of traditional foods and crafts may apply for a space by contacting the Poultney Historical Society at 802-287-5252 or at info@poultneyhistoricalsociety.org.
At 10 a.m. Saturday the fun begins with a tractor pull, followed by a chicken barbecue at noon. Perhaps the most exciting event, the parade, will line up at 2:30 p.m. and start at 4 p.m. This year’s parade theme is Small Town/Country living and as soon as it ends the carnival will open. “We’ve got floats, the fire department, and bands,” said parade chairman Todd Fenton.
There will be a bike giveaway for a boy and a girl, which requires no purchase to enter and is a can’t-miss event for the kids. Regarding the 80th anniversary of the carnival approaching, Fenton said “Next year is going to be big.” Anyone interested in joining the parade should contact Todd Fenton at 802-645-9522.
Burdock Festival,” said Gina Cull, event coordinator. Each year the festival centers around the parade, which has a “Red, White, and Blue” theme this year.
“We have miniature donkeys, we have floats, the fife and drum band… we’ve had ducks and goats and bicycles, all kinds of typical parade stuff,” said Cull. Line-up for the parade begins at 10:30 a.m. at the town grange and the parade begins at 11 a.m. Everyone is invited to participate, and prizes will be given to the three best floats and best parade animals. Parade animal prizes are sponsored by Ida and Mark Norris of Mill Pond Farm, and three cash prizes will be awarded in each category of best equine, best pet, and best farm animal. Immediately following the parade, the burdock-judging will begin. Entries for biggest burdock, most creative burdock, and most theme-related burdock should be entered in the town office no later than 10 a.m. There will also be plenty of events outside of the parade. The tag sale at the United Church of Benson, library book sale, and farmers market will provide opportunities for shopping, and the chicken barbecue and “Spin to Win” for desserts allow guests to get some refreshments. The Benson Burdock Festival has entertainment for everyone, including the Hocus Pocus Magic Show by Blaine Goad at 2 p.m., an ATV and garden tractor pull at 1 p.m., and Fireman’s Muster Games at noon. For those in the mood for a unique way to win some money, festival attendees can play “Cow Plop Bingo.” Those wishing to purchase a square should call Sean Sequin at 802-779-1187.

Don’t miss last of Old Home Days in Rupert By Ellen Ricks Old Home Days is continuing this week as a celebration of the town of Rupert, Vermont. The event began Aug. 10 and offers plenty of things to do on Aug.11 and Aug. 12 to put everyone in a fun, festive mood. This evening, Friday, the classic rock band “Last Call” will perform at 7 p.m. and there
will be tasty carnival food and nightly bingo for any and all to play. Saturday will be the real show-stopper, starting with a chicken barbecue from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. At noon, while you’re dining, you can enjoy the musical stylings of Al & Kathy Bain and Gary Blodgett, who are well known for their old-style country music and
authentic bluegrass and spirited gospel style. At 1 p.m. kids will have their fun and games. Then at 3 p.m. the Hill Country Cloggers will kick up their heels with a variety of dances to delight the crowd. At 5:30 p.m. it’s the annual Old Home Days parade, this year with the theme “Great Outdoors in Vermont.” A bike
raffle will be held at 7 p.m. and the Bob Beaver Band will take the stage to end the celebration. Old Home Days events are held on Route 153 in Rupert, sponsored by the Rupert Volunteer Fire Company. One of the firefighters, Jonathan Fisher, said he really enjoys this family friendly event and the sense of community he
feels from Old Home Days. “My personal favorite part of our carnival is the people,” he said. “They make it possible for us to have the carnival every year. It is our largest fundraiser we have. Without them we really wouldn’t be able to afford to continue anything.” For more information, check the Rupert Old Home Days Facebook group.
Exploring history at East Summer supper to be held Aug. 17 Hubbardton Cemetery On Sunday, Aug. 13, the Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site in Hubbardton offers a tour of the East Hubbardton Cemetery with site interpreter Carl Fuller. The program is from 2-4 p.m. Attendees are to meet at the Battlefield museum. Fuller will introduce you to the early residents of Hubbardton. Hear the exciting stories of settlement and what happened in 1777 when the battle was fought. Did one town father really get threatened with being burned at the stake? The Hubbardton Battlefield is the site of the only Revolutionary War battle fought in what
would become Vermont. The historic site is located at 5696 Monument Hill Road six miles off Vermont Route 30 in Hubbardton, or seven miles off Exit 5 on U.S. Route 4 in Castleton. Carefully follow the signs. For more information about the Battlefield or this event, call 802-273-2282. The site is open Thursdays through Sundays and Monday holidays from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Oct. 15. Regular admission is $3 for adults and free for children under 15. For information about Vermont’s State-Owned Historic Sites, visit historicsites.vermont.gov.
The Fellowship of the United Church of Dorset and East Rupert will hold a summer supper on Thursday, Aug. 17 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. Adult tickets are $15 and children’s tickets are $5; children under 5 are free. Call the office at 802-8672260 to make a reservation. Tickets will also be sold at the door. The menu will feature baked ham and roasted turkey complete with stuffing, potatoes, and gravy along with summer salad favorites. This is a favorite summer evening event as there will be both indoor and outdoor seating under tents on the front lawn.

Reader surprised at Vermont’s lack of plastic bag ban I recently learned that no Vermont town has a plastic bag ban. Given that Vermont has been an environmental leader since the 1970’s, I was surprised and disappointed. After living for 35 years in Vermont, my husband and I moved to Lee, Massachusetts in 2011, to be closer to grandchildren. We chose the Berkshires because it is so similar to Vermont. After our move, I joined the Lee Greener Gateway Committee.
In 2015, the committee started the process of writing two bylaws for consideration at our 2016 Town Meeting: a plastic bag and Styrofoam ban. About 24 Massachusetts towns already had plastic bag and/or Styrofoam bans. We presented drafted bylaws to our Selectboard, held public hearings, and contacted local media. Using community input, the final drafts of the two bylaws were passed. Businesses and community members were given a year to comply. The committee assist-

ed with pamphlets for businesses and consumers, posters for businesses, and reminders in utility bills. Our committee has promoted consumer use of reusable bags. With grants, we commissioned a student to create a Lee logo for a cloth bag, which businesses sell. We gave these bags to the food pantry, WIC program, and senior citizens. We have also sponsored “gently used reusable bag” swaps at our library and Farmers Market. Now, 55 Massachusetts towns have plastic bag bans. The state legislature is working on a statewide ban. I strongly encourage Vermont town officials, and those in surrounding towns, to pursue a ban. According to The Wall Street Journal, the U.S. uses 100 billion plastic shopping bags annually. An estimated 12 million barrels of oil is required to make them. If we all do our part to reduce this source of littering, ocean pollution, and drain on resources, our Earth will be healthier, as will future generations. Valerie Bluhm Lee, Massachusetts

The Pawlet Historical Society is pleased to present its August program, “Of Wheelmen, the New Woman, and Good Roads: Bicycling in Vermont, 1880-1920”, to be presented by Luis Vivanco, a Professor of Anthropology at University of Vermont. The PHS event will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Chriss Monroe Chapel, Cemetery Hill Road, Pawlet. Cemetery Hill Road is adjacent to the Pawlet Post Office on Route 30. Vivanco will explore the fascinating early history of the bicycle in Vermont; a new invention that gained widespread popularity in the 1880’s and 1890’s. By 1920, however, the popular interest in bicycles had waned, but it had not just been a fad. The bicycle was tied to important changes in industrial production, consumerism, new road policies and regulations, gender relations, and new cultural ideas about automobility and effortless speed. This PHS event is a Vermont Humanities Council presentation, free and open to the public, and accessible to people with disabilities. Refreshments will be provided. Visitors are asked to park outside the cemetery fence and

What makes Castleton an architectural gem? As an organization, Castleton Free Library is 120 years old. The library was founded in 1897, but the first collections were housed in the Buel Block on some shelves in Dr. Edward’s medical office. The town doctor’s portrait still hangs on the library’s wall. It took thirty more years for enough money to be raised to build the current brick building, with its comforting symmetry, huge south-facing windows that allow light to pour onto hardwood floors, and working fireplace. Fortunately, the land procured for the project is situated right in the middle of the Castleton Village Historic District, recognized on the National Register of Historic Places; the library is surrounded by distinguished buildings. On Saturday August 19 at 4 p.m., as Castleton’s Colonial Day winds down, Glen Andres, professor emeritus at
Middlebury College, will present a free program at the library delving into Vermont’s rich architectural heritage, with special emphasis on Castleton. Andres is co-author of the 504-page Buildings of Vermont (University of Virginia Press), for which he won the preservation award from Preservation Trust of Vermont in 2014. His book goes beyond the Vermont stereotypes of white country churches and barns overlooking rolling pastures to explain the remarkable range, quality, humanity, and persistence of this compelling built landscape. Andres will showcase the state’s rich collection of styles and types. He will show how styles from colonial and early federal New England and New York combined with contributions from Canada, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Scandinavia, and elsewhere. The program, organized
and funded by the Friends of CFL, is accessible and open to all. As an added treat, the Friends also are sponsoring their annual free ice cream social that day from 2-4 p.m. at the library. The events will happen in any weather. If the sun is shining, please come relax on one of the new outdoor benches. There are two in front, donated by the Friends, and two others in the pergola by the vegetable garden. Enjoy some tomatoes while you sit and chat or use the Wi-Fi, but take care that you’re not attacked by the rampant squash. Story Hour and Playgroup continue all year, but the Monday evening programs for school-aged kids wrap up on August 14 with a focus on Building a Better World through green technologies and sustainable energy. Newcomers are welcome, and regulars are urged to come for this final celebration with prizes.

Fair Continued from front page state fairgrounds for five fun-filled days of great events, music and people. The Vermont State Fair is an agriculture fair, managed by the Rutland County Agricultural Society, but don’t think it’s all about cows and maple syrup, although there is plenty of both. The fair offers a wide variety of attractions and events that will satisfy even the grumpiest of fairgoers. It seems there’s always something to do at the fair. The fair opens each day at 1 p.m. There’s a butterfly encounter where you can “feed” hundreds of butterflies, Hocus Pocus Magic Show, a haunted house, Terry’s animal land petting zoo, the Redneck Warrior obstacle course for the whole family, Adirondack traveling aviary, chainsaw carvings, a
NASCAR experience which puts you behind the wheel of an authentic NASCAR race car. There will be an Ironwood competition, new for 2017, and a sap bucket challenge for the kids. The Cracked Walnuts, a washboard-banjopenny-whistle-frying pan duo who have a fondness for oldtime music, will perform at various times daily for a knee-slapping good time. And let’s not forget everyone’s favorite attraction: carnival rides. There will be special events at various times. Kicking off on opening day is the Woodbooger Team Demo Derby at 7:30 p.m. The band Totally Submerged will be playing on the Sugarhouse stage at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. On Wednesday Aug. 16 there will be truck and tractor pulls on the grandstand at 7 p.m. and on Thursday Aug. 17 is the Woodbooger demolition derby qualifying heats at 7:30 p.m. The duo Heart to Heart will play on

Twig Remembers Phil Sweeney When I think of Phil, with my eyes closed, I get a little stubby guy, dungarees rolled up, looped rope for a belt, dark shirt (no tie), Persian boots (no socks) with curled up toes. He wears a powder blue, twobutton jacket with white roping around the corners and the lapel. He is at a carnival booth trying to get people to pop red balloons with blue feathered darts. Now, when I open my eyes I have a little green leprechaun in the hardware store to tell the boys some stories. Now, I believe it was St. Peter himself who gave the Irish storyteller permission to stretch the truth as long as he made the story funnier and better. Well Sweeney was the best at it.
My favorite Sweeney story: He stops in the store and Dave Nichols and I are talking Red Sox and we’re on the subject of David Ortiz’s long clutch home runs. Sweeney says, “You talk about a home run. I know because I saw it with my own eyes. You know Ed Marcy from Middletown (I checked with some older guys and Ed was a great ballplayer and could hit one a country mile). He hit a ball over the shed that they found two days later in Heald’s Garage parking lot.” If the ball landed on the yellow line, you’re probably talking about 400 ft. Heald’s parking lot, Wow! That’s another 300-400 ft. A bit of a stretch. Well, I think I figured it out.
Having been a bartender for eight years you get to watch these stories grow every time they tell it. When Sweeney first told this story, he was using the small stretchers that Guy Dimaco used to get another year or two out of those winter leather boots. Now, when he told it that last time he was using one of those twelve foot stretchers like Owen McShane and all the undertakers used on their “Old Black Mariah” hearses back in the 1950’s. God Bless Phil Sweeney and God bless all those beautiful stories. I can hear Sweeney up there now lobbying for some changes with St. Peter to his “Writing Rules.”
Chuck (Nasty) Williams Blazing Saddles – scene cowboys around campfire eating beans contest – big guy leader played by Slim Pickens. That was Chuck Williams – big old boy and full of the devil. Show you what I mean – when his hunting days were over he became “camp cook.” And a good one was he. His buddies used to rave about
his best dishes that he named “Possum Fricassee,” “Polecat Stew” and “Crooked Legged Rabbit Pie.” Back in those days when a guy got a “Prize deer” he’d rope it to the front fender of his big truck and ride around town to show it off. One “Rabbit Season” Chuck got a good sized rabbit and roped it over the
front fender of his little beater car and drove around showing it to his hunter buddies. They loved it. As far as the nickname “Nasty” – well maybe when he was a young scrapper. But I don’t remember it. All I remember is that big fun loving guy. God be with you – Chuck Williams.
Don’t miss the last Fair Haven Concert of 2017 The last concert in the Fair Haven Concert 2017 summer series is once again the J.P. Murphy Band. They will be taking center stage in the gazebo on Thursday, August 17 beginning at 7 p.m. This is a free ice cream night, so you will want to get there early. The ice cream has been generously donated by the Durkee Insurance Agency and Will’s Fair Haven Motors. J.P. Murphy was formed in early 1991, by Patrick Gray Sr. who sings lead and plays rhythm guitar or banjo as well as an occasional harmonica. Gray’s love for his Irish heritage, the words and music he grew up with, made it a natural choice for him to form a traditional Irish group. The group performs the traditional Irish music that reflects the struggles as well as the triumphs of an enduring, fun-loving people. The band engages the audience and encourages them to sing along. Children even get
a chance to participate and do the “Unicorn dance” for the song first made famous by the Irish Rovers. So, bring your lawn chairs and blankets early to enjoy the ice cream and the toe-tapping, hand-clapping tunes. It promises to be a truly entertaining evening in one of Vermont’s loveliest parks. The concert committee would like to thank all of their sponsors, donors, patrons, musicians, sound engineers, and many volunteers for once again making the summer concert series such a success. The concerts go on rain or shine. The rain location is the Congregational Church at the north end of the park. In case of inclement weather, call 265-3010 Ext. 301 to find out if the concert is moved indoors. Thanks to everyone for their support of another successful summer series. Hope to see you for the holiday concert in November and next summer for the 2018 Series.

Hartford town-wide sale this weekend By Krystle S. Morey Hartford’s town-wide sale is this weekend. The sales are set to take place Saturday, Aug. 12 and Sunday, Aug. 13 at various locations throughout the town. Bonnie Williamson, an event’s organizer, said the sale is going to be one of the biggest town-wide events yet. “There will be more than 50 sales and events with various food vendors,” she said. Asked what sale items will typically be found, Williamson said: “Oh, everything: furniture, clothing, home décor, plants.” Some of the more ambitious sellers will be setting up shop as early as Friday, Aug. 12. Williamson said the sales typically begin at 9 a.m. and end around 5 p.m. “Sometimes people stay open until dark,” she said. Maps, featuring the list of all sales and locations, can be picked up at As Times Goes By, Stewart’s Shop, What’s Cookin’ Restaurant and the Hartford Town Office. Beyond the sales, Williamson pointed out, various community organiza-

There will be a flea market at the Stella Rose Bed and Breakfast at 29 Hartford Main St. Contact Sandra Fawn at 518-632-5467 for more information. The Hartford Fish and Game Club will have a take-out chicken barbecue
on Sunday at the usual spot next to the Stewart’s Shop on Route 40, starting at 11 a.m. and continuing until it is sold out. The dinner includes a half chicken, baked potato, corn on the cob, roll and soda. The Methodist Church will set up a food booth from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with homemade French fries and baked goods for sale. There will also be vari-
ous food vendors set up around town, selling hamburgers, hot dogs, baked goods and other items. The Tri-County branch of Woman’s Farm & Garden will hold its annual flower show entitled “Saratoga” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Masonic Hall on Main Street. Information is available from Janine Thomas at 518-632-5181 or email gdddbrown@hotmail.com. Also on Saturday, the Hartford Museum and Howard Hanna Civil War Enlistment Center on Hartford Main Street will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.for those interested in witnessing New York State’s only remaining Civil War enlistment center. Restroom facilities will be located near the Hartford Museum on Hartford Main Street. Williamson will have her own sale at her shops, As Time Goes By and Bonnie’s Boutique, located at 23 Hartford Main St. “We’ll be having a major summer clearance sale,” she said. Anyone seeking more information on the town-wide event or wishing to be listed on the sale map should contact Williamson at 518-632-5166.
Students to get free school supplies Saturday By Krystle S. Morey Area students can get free school supplies at the Granville High School on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. The 11th annual Backpack Project drive gives away school supplies to more than 300 students each year. Backpacks, filled with rulers, folders, pencils, crayons and more, are available for free to students in grades pre-K through grade 12 in the Granville, Wells and Mettawee Community School districts. Children must be present to collect school items. Organizer Ann Schinski started the event in 2006, after her husband, Steve, following a short illness. In its first year there were 50 backpacks, which were gone in 45 minutes. Now, hundreds of backpacks are dis-

tions, which Schinski said she and volunteers collect year-round. Some businesses and people donate money and others bring bags already filled with
supplies, she said. “Everybody gives. It’s amazing,” she said. “The program has continued each year due to generous donations from local businesses, organizations and individual donors.” All proceeds for the project go directly the cost of supplies and backpacks. Donations, which area tax deductible, are accepted throughout the year. They can be sent to “The Backpack Project,” c/o Granville Baptist Church, Reverend Jim Peterson, 7 Quaker St. in Granville, New York, 12832. Those interested in donating items should contact Schinski at 802-287-2787. Volunteers who would like to help hand out backpacks at the event should also contact Schinski. She said she also needs volunteers to help set-up the event and stuff the backpacks on Aug. 11.
Vigil Tuesday: ‘It’s about coming together’ By Krystle S. Morey “This community has suffered so many losses.” That’s why, Laurie Black said, Granville residents are coming together for a memorial event in Veterans Memorial Park on Aug. 15. Starting at 7 p.m. there will be a candlelight vigil, memorial luminaries and paper lanterns. Area pastors and officials have been invited to speak. “Granville recently has lost
several residents and those with a connection to it, to death… many of whom were untimely, suicide and those in the military. There is no limit on when the person passed away or how attendees knew them, all are invited to grieve and remember together,” said Black, who’s organizing the event. “This is not about anyone in particular,” she said. “This is for everyone who has lost someone and is grieving.” Those wishing to remember
a lost loved one are urged to bring posters, T-shirts or any other memorabilia to the event. “They all have brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews that are crying,” Black said. “It is about all of us coming together. There are so many people who are grieving … and in different ways, whether you lost a 15-year-old boy or a 15-year-old dad,” Black said, noting a couple of losses her family has experienced recently. Black and a friend, Wanda
Crossman, are planning the vigil. “It’s going to be beautiful and it’s going to be big,” Black said. The event will also serve as a forum to grieve for those who are missing. A prayer will be said for Jonathan Schaff, a Fair Haven man who went missing after a night out in Granville in January 2014. “I want one of the ministers to say a prayer to bring him home,” Black said. Candles will be available at the park, but it is recommended
attendees bring their own. “Granville is a beautiful place to live, and people certainly show it when things like this happen,” Black said. “We are asking for you all to join us so we can all come together to show that we all are here for each other in such sad times.” “I think this is a great event,” Mayor Brian LaRose said at a village board meeting Monday night. “It’s terrible that a community as small as this has seen so much sadness.”
