Fair kicks off Monday! By Krystle S. Morey and Matthew Saari Holy smokes! It’s fair time! One of the most popular county fairs is just a stone’s throw from the Lakes Region, in New York’s Washington County. The Washington County Fair begins Monday, Aug. 21 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 27 at the Washington County Fairground on Route 29 in Greenwich. It draws more than 120,000 annually. Here’s a look at the daily fair highlights: The doors are open from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday, kicking off a week full of fun for everyone. The night begins with the official opening of the fair at 5 p.m. The Greene Brothers with special guest Smokey Greene will perform at 6 p.m. and again at 8 p.m. in Entertainment Tent 1. At 7 p.m. the Stoney Roberts Demolition Derby is set to take over the Motorsports Arena. Milking demonstrations will
take place at the Ag Center throughout the evening, from 4-6:30 p.m. Monday is also “Taste of the Fair Monday,” which brings $2 samples from food vendors including Angela’s Pizza, Steve’s Lemonade, Billi Jo’s Bloomin Onions, Adirondack Kettle Corn and R&G Funnel Cakes. Gates open at 9 a.m. on Tuesday and that’s when youth judging competitions get started in various categories including dairy, goat showmanship and poultry judging. At 10 a.m., there’s an open ox versatility show at the Draft Animal Tent and cheese sampling in at the Ag Center. With the 11 a.m. hour comes the best-dressed swine (Swine Barn) and goat dairy and meat shows (Sheep/Goat Barn). At noon, a Buffalo and Brandy performance will be in Entertainment Tent 1; Hot Dog
Pig Races kick off at 12:30 p.m.; and at 1 p.m. the Craig Wright Bicycle Show (NEW to the fair this year) is at the East End Broadway/Conservation Building Area. The rest of Tuesday evening includes a show by the A g r i Puppets
( N E W this year) at 2 and 5 p.m. behind Commercial Building #1; Master of the Chainsaw at 2:30, 4 and 6 p.m. on West End Drive near the White Ticket Gate; and the WCF Pro Rodeo in the Motorsports Arena. The fair is open at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, “Senior Day.” On

At 1 p.m. fairgoers can swing by Bluebird Road and witness the high wire act put on courtesy of Circus Incredible, one of the fair’s newest additions this year. A number of shows will be repeated throughout the day. Hot Dog Pig Races will be exhibited on Bluebird Road at 12:30, 4, 6 and 7:30 p.m.; Sylvia and the Magic Trunk will take to the Front Porch Stage at 2:30, 4 and 6 p.m. At 6:30 p.m. a Rooster Crowing Contest will be held in the poultry/rabbit area. Friday morning begins at 9 a.m. with an Open Class Dairy competition in the Judging Arena tent which will include Jersey, Brown Swiss and Ayrshire cows. If cows aren’t your thing, fairgoers can visit the sheep/goat barn for the Open Dairy and Meat Goat Judging competition instead. The Motorsports Arena starts

The fair comes to a close on Sunday with unlimited carnival rides which can be had with a $20 wristband. Sunday also offers fairgoers one last chance to witness many of the week’s acts including Hot Dog Pig Races, cheese carving, Buffalo and Brandy, Masters of the Chainsaw, Agri Puppets, and more. The demolition derby, a perennial favorite, brings the 2017 fair season to a close in the Motorsports Arena at 5 p.m. New this year a pair of circus acts, a bicycle stunt show and

Besides entertainment there are plenty of rides for the mellow-riders and thrill-seekers alike. And, of course, the fair will also include plenty of agriculture displays, dairy shows, beef shows, swine, poultry, sheep, goats, rabbits and cavies, along with horse and draft animal competitions throughout the week. Admission to the fair is $12, excluding carnival rides. Children 13 and under get in free. Week-long tickets can be purchased for $36. Parking is free. There is handicapped parking near the gates and courtesy rides will be offered to those who need them. There are checkpoints, marked with signs, scattered throughout the fairgrounds where folks can request a ride. There are also wheelchairs, provided by Southern Adirondack Independent Living, available at a tent directly inside the white ticket gate. Gates are open from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday; 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday. Ride hours are 5-11 p.m. Monday; noon to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. The fair is open rain or shine.
