Open House GRANVILLE Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church may have held its last Mass in 2009, but new owner Gisele “Gigi” Zeitler wants to celebrate the church’s rich history on Saturday, Aug. 26 for its 150th anniversary, and to show off the church’s new second life as a residential home. From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. an open house will offer a look at history with a new look. Zeitler took on the project of turning the church into a home for herself and her two cats six years ago, fulfilling a childhood dream. Zeitler, an artist by trade and a lover of both design and history, has done her best to maintain the integrity of the church. Many of the churches pews are still used in the home, as well as the large stained-glass windows and front doors. It a neat twist of DIY, Zeitler has turned some of the pews into the cabinets in her kitchen. Zeitler has even kept the names that have been scratched into the choir loft. “It’s a community icon. It doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to the community,” says Zeitler. There will be food and drinks, a building tour, and presentations on the history of the church. Zeitler also plans to raffle off a six-foot pew. The church is on Dayton Hill Road in Middle Granville. Visitors should park at the rear of the church and enter the building via the front door. u

Fair's final days action-packed By Matthew Saari and Krystle S. Morey Holy smokes! The last days of the fair are already here! The Washington County Fair, which began Monday, Aug. 21, continues through Sunday, Aug. 27 at the Washington County Fairground on Route 29 in Greenwich. If you haven’t been there yet, have no fear, the last half of the fair is just as actionpacked as the first half. Friday morning begins at 9 a.m. with an Open Class Dairy competition in the Judging Arena tent which will include Jersey, Brown Swiss and Ayrshire cows. If cows aren’t your thing, you can visit the sheep/goat barn for the Open Dairy and Meat Goat Judging competition. The Motorsports Arena starts the day at 10 a.m. with Out of Field Tractor Pulls. In addition to repeat showings of Hot Dog Pig Races, Sylvia and the Magic Trunk, Circus Incredible and more there will be a Youth Western Horse Show in the Horse Arena at 11 a.m.; a sheep-shearing demo in the sheep/goat barn at 2 and 4 p.m.; Big Crunch Bingo in Entertainment Tent Two at 6 p.m.; and Goat Quiz Bowl at 6 p.m. in the sheep/goat barn among many other activities.
Saturday kicks off with both an Open and Youth Fiber Goat Judging in the sheep/goat barn at 9 a.m. Engines get revving in the Motorsports Arena at noon with NYTPA Sanctioned Tractor Pulls. A spinning contest will be held at 2 p.m. in the sheep/goat barn. For musical talent, the Protones will take the stage in Entertainment Tent One at 5:30 and 7 p.m. More music can be had in the Caboose area at 7:30 p.m. in the form of Jeff Williams performing tributes to country music legends. The fair comes to a close on Sunday with unlimited carnival rides which can be had with a $20 wristband. Sunday also offers fair-goers one last chance to witness many of the week’s acts including Hot Dog Pig Races, cheese carving, Buffalo and Brandy, Masters of the Chainsaw, Agri Puppets, and more. The demolition derby, a perennial favorite, brings the 2017 fair season to a close in
the Motorsports Arena at 5 p.m. New this year are a pair of circus acts, a bicycle stunt show and Agri-puppets, all of which are promising to wow crowds. There are also daily events running every half hour, including the Barnyard Cackle, an interactive show with singing and joke-telling chicks. Admission to the fair is $12, excluding carnival rides. Children 13 and under get in free. Week-long tickets can be purchased for $36. Parking is free. There is handicapped parking near the gates and courtesy rides will be offered to those who need them. There are checkpoints, marked with signs, scattered throughout the fairgrounds where folks can request a ride. There are also wheelchairs, provided by Southern Adirondack Independent Living, available at a tent directly inside the white ticket gate. Gates are open from 9 a.m.
Don't miss the last three days of the Washington County Fair! to 10 p.m. Friday through Saturday; and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday. Ride hours are noon to 11 p.m. Friday through Saturday; and Sunday from
noon to 9 p.m. The fair is open rain or shine. For more information, visit washingtoncountyfair.com.
