Sixth grade students at Castleton Village School can expect to start school on Wednesday Aug. 30, where they will be introduced to middle school. For all other students, classes begin on Thursday Aug. 31. Spanish teacher Eric Langley, special educator Michael Charles, and foundations class teacher Gwen Lyons will round out the lineup for new teachers. School principal Linda Peltier is excited to see what the new Foundations class brings to the students. The class will focus on life management skills like basic first aid, safety, balancing a checkbook, making healthy meals, how to sew on a button, manage stress, and more. This class is meant to be a more updated and interdisciplinary version of the more traditional Family and Consumer Sciences class that many middle school students take. There will also be a sports meeting where students can sign up for soccer, flag football, and cross country on Aug. 31 at 6 p.m. This mandatory parentathlete meeting will be held in the gym and is necessary for any student who is interested in participating in a sport this year. Family of the late Nathan Willis will host their annual Memorial Camp Scholarship Fund Basket Party on Saturday, Sept. 9 at the American Legion Post #49 at 72 Main Street in Fair Haven, Vermont. Willis was an avid outdoorsman. He loved nature and he connected so well with kids. He knew he needed to share his love of nature with as many children as possible. As a child Nathan went to Skye Farm Camp in Warrensburg, New York. He was sponsored by family and

friends. Each kid, who goes to camp in Nate’s name, will carry-on his legacy. This is the sixth year the fundraiser has helped children financially to attend various camps. This summer it helped send five children. Next year, the family hopes to raise enough funds to double the number of kids attending camp. Doors open at 11 a.m. with a drawing at 1 p.m. Basket and door prize donations are greatly appreciated. For information, call Diane Rice 518-932-1434 or Maxine Willis 518-499-1565.

By Suzannah Van Gelder The Rutland County Humane Society will once again host the “Dog Days of Summer” Pool Party to give canines a chance to cool off before the pools close for the season. From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Sunday Aug. 27, pooches and their people are invited for one last dip in the Northwood Pool. One of the Rutland County Humane Society’s biggest events of the year, this event can attract around 50 dogs, weather depending. There are raffles, RCHS T-shirts for sale, and doggie bags for participants. If enough people volunteer to hop in the pool, there may even be doggie paddle races and competitions for longest jump and biggest splash. While the Rutland City pool is undergoing construction, the Northwood Pool in Rutland Town has to donated their space. The cost is $5 per dog, and donations from owners are encouraged. All funds go to operating costs of the RCHS. Dogs must be leashed, except for when they are in the pool. Puppies under 4 months old, dogs in heat and aggressive dogs are not allowed to participate. Questions should be directed to jen@rchsvt.org or 802-483-9171.

Brown receives Scholarship to attend SUNY Oneonta Darren Brown of Fair Haven, Vermont, has been selected to receive the New York State Advantage Award to attend SUNY Oneonta. The college’s award of $6,000 annually will help Brown to pursue a bachelor’s degree beginning in the Fall 2017 semester. Brown, a graduate of Fair Haven Union High School, plans to major in Criminal Justice. Since 2000, the college and its related College at Oneonta Foundation have more than tripled the number of scholarships available to SUNY Oneonta students, and more than $4 million is awarded each year. Increasing the impact the

scholarships have in the lives of students was a priority of Possibilities Full of Promise, the 125th Anniversary Campaign for SUNY Oneonta, which concluded June 30, 2015, raising approximately $1 million more than its goal and helping to push the college’s endowment over $50 million. Located in the hills of Central New York, SUNY Oneonta is a mid-size, public, liberal arts and sciences college with a pre-professional focus. The college enrolls approximately 6,000 students in a wide variety of bachelor’s degree programs and a number of graduate certificates and degrees.

Castleton school reinvents Home Ec. By Suzannah Van Gelder Over the years, Home Ec or Family and Consumer Sciences classes have been met with groans from students. At Castleton Village School, the Foundations class hopes to reimagine this standard middle school curriculum for a new generation with new needs. Castleton Village School Principal, Linda Peltier, saw that many “life management” skills were missing from students’ toolboxes. After observing this need, Peltier started looking into ways that she could incorporate these skills into the curriculum. “They don’t have those self-care or self-management skills,” said Peltier. From here, the Foundations class was born. “These are the building blocks of a healthy life,” said Peltier. The idea behind the Foundations class came from

thought that there were certain foundational skills that every person should have. This interdisciplinary class will cover a variety of subjects, including how to cook healthy meals, sew on a button, learn basic first aid and safety, stress management, and social-emotional health. “Our school does talk about mindfulness, and this class will go into some more detail about that,” Peltier said. In an age where nearly every middle school student has a phone and many are on some social media outlet, Peltier saw a need to cover relationship management, both with friends and adults. Saying that “middle school is a pivotal point in a person’s life,” Peltier discussed the importance of making emotional health a part of school. Peltier pointed out that stress management skills are essential for students, whether they are taking a test in class

The dedication came five years later in 1988. This park honors the fallen, prisoners of war, missing in action and those that returned home after serving their country, the United States of America. or have parents going through a divorce. Peltier also described what she calls “inter-age relationships” as being a problem she sees under the greater issue of communication skills. Students need to learn how to communicate with their peers but also their elders, as the dynamic between the two is vastly different. Family and Consumer Sciences is offered at some schools, but frequently does not cover the breadth of subjects that this Foundations course promises. This new class is meant to be a FACS class for a more “worldly” group of students. Castleton Village School teaches grades 6 through 8, and Peltier says that this class will be taught to all students. “It’s going to be interesting. It’s a new area, but it’s certainly an area that I’m concerned with.”

approached the Selectboard about having a cement walkway installed, complete with a new chain link fence around it. This request was approved by the Selectboard and funded by Post 49. The masonry was completed by DS Masonry, Inc. of Poultney, Vermont. Small Things at Castleton Free Library This week the library has several small things to talk about. First are the small cherry tomatoes on the circulation desk, sungolds from the garden, tempting you to eat just one as you check out your books. These are at your left hand - call it the healthy side, because in a basket to the right are packages of small chocolates being sold by the library Friends group to raise money for library projects. Price is $2 each. Another small thing, much cuter than a tomato or candy, was the baby who attended Story Hour this morning. He happened to be the very first baby to redeem his Baby Book Bag a few months ago, sewn and filled with small gifts from the Friends to welcome new Castleton/Hubbardton babies into our library community. Babies are entitled to receive these bags FREE after they go through the hard work of being born, but they rely on a parent to get them to the library because, duh, they can’t drive. So please come with your baby, if you have one who was born in 2016 or 2017, and introduce her/him to the library staff. Today’s baby entertained everyone with giant grins, impressive wiggling skills to get off the carpet squares, and rapt attention during the stories, proving that it’s never too soon to introduce babies to books. And his mom, call her Amanda, introduced the library to baby books called Indestructibles that they’ll be adding to their collection of board books because of the “chew-proof, ripproof, and drool-proof ” properties of their “non-toxic, paperlike material.” Thank-you, Amanda. We love suggestions!

If you’ve read this column before, you may recall that some of the smallest items the library lends are passes to various Vermont attractions. Now, thanks to a small business just over the border in Hampton, New York - Johnson and Son Bikeworks, 8.4 miles from the library - we have a new kind of pass you may borrow that allows you to rent bicycles, bike racks, and child trailers at a reduced rate.

The pass is valid for one day, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at a rate of $4 per person for up to six people on a pass. All rentals include helmets and locks. The bikes are seven-speed cruisers or mountain bikes. Late summer is a fantastic time to explore local small beauties while hiking and cycling the Rail Trail or Endless Brook trail system. More information can be found at www.slatevalleytrails.org.

Pancake breakfast Sept. 10 Mark the date. Sunday, Sept. 10 begins the fundraiser Pancake Breakfast Season sponsored by the West Pawlet Volunteer Fire Department. The breakfasts are held at the West Pawlet Volunteer Fire Department located at 2806 Vermont Route 153 (Main Street). They are open from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The West Pawlet firehouse is a handicap accessible site. The breakfast menu includes pancakes of several varieties including regular, chocolate chip, blueberry and cranberry and local maple syrup; as well as waffles, West Pawlet’s worldfamous home fries, scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon. The menu’s beverages include coffee, tea, milk and orange juice. Breakfast prices are $10 for

people 12 years old and up; $5 for 5-12 years and free to children under the age of 5 years. As a charity fund-raiser event, breakfast profits support the department’s equipment and training needs. The department is a non-profit. Donations are appreciated and are gratefully received. New members are welcome. The department members all wish to extend a sincere thank you to the many patrons of the pancake breakfast events which are held monthly September through April. The department will remind you monthly of the next event date. For more information contact Antonio Landon at 802-3454312 or email at wp5801@ yahoo.com.

Twig Remembers Edmund (Ebbie) Lowell Back in the old days when the B & B Diner was out where Collaborations at Gilmore Home Center is and Goddard Trucking was right next door, Ebbie was one of those drivers coming in from the Boston milk run to get a hot hamburger plate. Now Ebbie didn’t seem to have a favorite waitress as he was giving them all heck. My best friend Tommy Genier and I couldn’t get enough of that place – the jokes, the stories, the music,

the camaraderie, the atmosphere. Well, we wondered how these guys could get away sassing all these waitresses. So I asked an old boy and he said, “Leave 25¢ tip and next time in give her heck.” It worked like a charm – oh, did we have fun! I still wonder how Ebbie got away with giving them all a little sass. Must have been a good tipper. Ebbie, save me a stool and I’ll have a hot turkey sandwich. God be with Ebbie Lowell.

What a great communicator. When you came away from a chat with him, you were almost always left with something new or different and words of wisdom. Back in the 1950’s and 1960’s in this area he for sure would have been a “WPTR Good Guy.” May God be with you, Dick Clemente.

His passion and commitment to the sport of skiing is inspirational and he has maintained a leadership position with the United States Collegiate Ski Association’s Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference. Congratulations to 2017 inductee, Eder!
