Today is the first day of September and that means two things: Summer is coming to a close and it’s time for Whitehall’s perennial Yard Sale Days. The Whitehall Chamber of Commerce sponsors the weekend-long event that begins today and runs through Sunday. Each day the sales start at 9 a.m. and run until 4 p.m. Every year individuals and businesses put out a plethora of junk which may be treasure to someone else. “To me it’s like Halloween,” said Marge Mohn, sale organizer. “You go door-to-door and you get to meet people. I think that’s important too – the interaction

They can save a lot of money finding used items.” The items to be had range from every day electronic appliances to clothes to rare and unusual knick-knacks and more. “You can find everyday products such as toasters and blenders; you can find clothes, back-to-school clothes – some of them brand new – and unusual collectibles and if you look hard enough some antiques,” said Mohn. locations will be provided on a map. “We have about 20 people signed up so far,” Mohn said. “I think a lot of people just do it…I think it’s going to be a good year.” It appears the weather will be cooperative as well. The Weather Channel provides a forecast for Friday of partly cloudy with a high of 64 degrees; and Saturday is expected to be sunny with a high of 72 degrees. But if the weather turns sour, the yard sales will go on regardless. “Unless we have a hurricane,” Mohn said with a chuckle. Dr. Kris and myself, Dr. Scott, are transitioning into retirement after 31 years of practice here in Poultney. We will miss you and your critters dearly. You have been a huge part of our lives. We have tried always to do the best we can for you. I will continue to see birds and other exotics, as well as wildlife, on a part-time basis. We would like to introduce Dr. Susan Johnson, who has taken the lead as veterinarian here in Poultney. She has 16 years of clinical experience in a small town practice. Dr. Johnson is supported by our excellent staff, Tabatha, Cindy, Faith and Dakotah. You are in good hands. Thanks again for trusting your furry family to us all these years. I, Susan Johnson, would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself to all of the clients of Poultney Veterinary Service. I

Dienst crafts limited-edition, dimensional copper and brass sculptures of American wildlife while integrating found objects into his work to really give it a natural touch. Some of his featured artwork are sculptures of regional fish and an eagle. He also creates copper jewelry. Sara Jane Cormier has always been a collector. For years she has picked up interesting objects that came across her path such as bits of wood, bark, stones and shells. Finally, she had the idea to turn them into art. “It’s fun and satisfying work,” said Cormier, who will display a range of art pieces with natural embellishments. Some of the art from both Cormier and Dienst will remain on display through September. First Friday at Pember will be turning seven years old in October and co-founder Rob McGuire said that “each event takes on a life of its own,” with everything coming together from the themes to the local artists that really makes each

To keep with the theme, Kitz will be presenting the highlights of what he learned during his study on wolf communication. It’s sure to be a howling good time. For more information, call 518-642-1515 The Pember Library and Museum is located on 33 West Main Street in Granville. Meanwhile, the Slate Valley Museum will open a new exhibition that explores different viewpoints of World War I. The exhibit is entitled “No Peace in the Valleys: A Call for Service in the Quarries and Beyond, World War I 1914-1918.” It will show the war through the vantage point of different slate areas, from the Welsh slate region in northwest Wales to the Slate Valley region of Vermont and New York. The Slate Valley Museum has partnered with its twin museum, the National Slate Museum of Wales in Llamberis, Gwynedd to provide

a Welsh experience. The panels on display represent a portion of an exhibit held at the Wales museum last year. This dual perspective gives museumgoers a chance to see what the war was like in a slate valley area in two completely different parts of the world. Stories from local New York and Vermont families tell moving and heart-wrenching experiences about America’s participation in the first global conflict. How brave, strong young men were plucked from the quarries and mills and sent to the European front lines or in factories making military equipment and supplies. Some, never returning home again. This exhibition is a continuing effort by the Slate Valley Museum to explore the issues and the times that led to the “Great War” just as the nation is preparing for the World War I Centennial. The exhibit will be displayed starting Friday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will continue until Nov. 11 when it will close with special Armistice Day activities. The Slate Valley Museum is located at 17 Water Street in Granville.

Police to patrol school zones On Aug. 30 during the morning commute hours, troopers from the Rutland Barracks conducted several saturation patrols in school zones throughout Rutland County. The purpose of this patrol was to focus on encouraging safe operating habits, enforcement of hands-free mobile device violations and to ensure seatbelt use. The Vermont State Police would like to remind drivers that school will be starting back up this week and to use extra caution while driving. Children can be unpredictable, difficult to see and can be distracted as they walk to and from school. Please stay vigilant while driving, be prepared to stop at crosswalks, and never pass a stopped school bus with red flashing lights displayed.

Troopers from the Royalton Barracks will be patrolling school zones during the week to ensure students are safe and that drivers are obeying the law. Allow yourself some extra time to get to work as school buses can and do make frequent stops. Help ensure that the students remain safe this school year.

Rutland, Vermont. The crew of the USS Haynsworth carried the weight of the attack though their lifetimes. For one young radioman, Jack McAllister, the attack defined his life in unexpected ways. Books will be available for purchase at the event. Irons is the son of an Army officer and military librarian, which fueled his interest in history and World War II. As a child at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he played with his brother in derelict B-29 Superfortress bombers. Playing soldier, he and the other children used Army surplus gear. Toy soldiers led to building World War II model tanks, planes, and ships. The quest for the background information of important battles led to the start of a collection of World War II literature early in life. Using his background as a scientist and former Army Reserve officer, Irons labors to bring unwritten World War II stories to light. Firsthand accounts by surviving World War II sailors, marines and pilots bring his narratives to life. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will follow the talk.

New York theater comes to Vermont

Vic Genier

By Ellen Ricks The New York City theatre scene is coming to Vermont this month as the Paramount Theatre hosts the third residency of the acclaimed New York City theatre company BEDLAM from Sept. 4 through Sept. 10. This residency will feature two workshop presentations of works that the company is currently fine tuning. The first one is George Bernard Shaw’s “Saint Joan,” a re-mount of the group signature production prior to the national tour, on Friday, Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m. The second presentation will be a new play called “Kind Man Man Kind” on Sunday Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. Unlike most of the theater productions, these performances will not take place at the Paramount Theatre, but at Burnham Hollow Orchard Barn in Middletown Springs. BEDLAM was created in

One of BEDLAM’s workshop presentations is George Bernard Shaw’s “Saint Joan.” 2012 by co-founders Eric Tucker and Andrus Nichols, presenting their first production of George Bernard Shaw’s “Saint Joan.” What made the show unique was that four actors played more than 25 characters, all with a barely-there budget. The show

was an instant hit, earning the company recognition from The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. “Saint Joan” was extending four times, and since then the company has presented other classics such as “Hamlet,” “Twelfth Night” and “Sense and Sensibility.” The theatre company has won two OffBroadway Alliance awards and an Obie Grant. Sunday’s play “Kind Man Man Kind” is a new play by Kimberly Pau about eight Weekend Warriors who hike through an isolated Texas forest and must confront the darkness within: toxic masculinity, privilege and surrendering dominance. Pau said she wrote the play as “a rally cry” to the men who experience and hate toxic masculinity but find they are unable to stop it. “I am thrilled to be exploring this epic landscape with Bedlam,” said Pau. Since these presentations are “no-frills” works in process, admission will be a suggested donation of $10 and cannot be bought at the Paramount Box office. Seating is limited to 80. Twig remembers

Call Lakeside Realty at 802-645-9001 www.vtlakeside.com

In the late 1980’s songwriter Paul Anka wrote a song for Frank Sinatra called, “I Did It My Way.” He might as well have written it for Vic, a man who always marched to the beat of his own drummer. I spent some high school time on that farm up on the hill with my classmate Dave Camara (step-brother) and I would have to say that Vic was just a bit rough on equipment. I always say that he was the reason his dad had to purchase a welder. Now, I’m not going to say “as he got older he settled down” because Victor was Victor and that was never going to change. In his lifetime, Vic had two very successful businesses. When he came home from his tour in Vietnam he went into the concrete business and if you check around on houses built in the 1970’s the foundation has a good chance of being Vic’s. After 20 years with that he went into Genier Slate, another very successful business. You ask why everybody knew him. Well, if you were in a large room and Vic was also there, you would know exactly where he was. You’d hear laughter and you could hear him joking and kidding with friends. He had his own unique style for greeting lots of people, like “How you doing Twig, how you doing, how you doing.” And

then he would roll into a long list of questions pertaining to you and yours. The questions came so fast that if you didn’t answer he would and then go onto the next and the next until he came to a place where he felt comfortable where he’d crack a joke or give off a funny saying; then he’d be off to the next person. If he ran into a friend he hadn’t seen in awhile or someone related to his business, he would visit. And then he’d be right back to the speed questions ‘til he had covered nearly everyone in the huge building. I’d say that was a very smart way to work a large crowd. You know he was quite stubborn and a bit of a gruff; but he was nobody’s fool. Remember now, he was a farm kid and they are trained how to do almost everything. I’ll bet you that Vic even learned how to weld. “My Way” And now the end is near And so I face the final curtain. My friend I’ll say it clear, I’ll state my case Of which I’m certain. I’ve lived a life that’s full, I travelled each and every highway, But more, much more than that, I did it my way. He sure packed a lot of fun into 69 years. God bless Vic Genier!

‘Patriot Day’ prayer planned On September 11, “Patriot Day”, Granville area pastors will be leading a time of prayer in Veterans Memorial Park at noon. “The purpose of the event is to pray for our nation as part of the nation-wide “Cry Out America” call to prayer sponsored by the National Day of Prayer Task Force,” said Pastor Jim Peterson, of the Granville B a p t i s t Church. Peterson will start the prayer rally, and Pastor Rick Backus from South Granville Congregational Church will lead the singing of patriotic and Christian songs with his guitar. Other pastors will lead those assembled in praying for various aspects of our society—government officials at all levels, our military and the police, firefighters and rescue squads, the schools, families, the media, businesses, and the Church. “Why pray for America?” is the question asked on the brochure published for the occasion. The answer given is: “God is sovereign and nothing comes as a surprise to Him. “Whether we face fluctuating economics, threats from abroad, unrest at home, or troubling circumstances, our Heavenly Father is not caught unaware. Through prayer, we

are able to tap into His wisdom, strength, protection, and peace. He stands ready to respond to our needs when we humbly ask for divine intervention in the affairs of men. “Patriot Day is an annual observance held on the 11th of Se ptember, and Cry Out America invites people to pray for the nation, in r e m e m brance of the tragic events of 9/11/2001. “The day was created in 2001 by a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress, and signed into law by George W. Bush. On this day, as “One Nation Under God”, we will gather together to Cry Out to God for America! He is the One Who gave us the promise in 2 Chronicles 7:14. “As we humbly and diligently seek Him, we’ll be changed, and we’ll see transformation in America through prayer,” said Peterson. A similar prayer rally will be held in Whitehall on Sept. 11, at 6:30 p.m. in Riverside Park, with Pastor Rick Backus leading the singing with his guitar there also. The public is encouraged to join in prayer with the pastors. For more information, contact Pastor Peterson at 518642-2245 or JCPeterson@roadrunner.com or visit www. CryOutAmerica.us.

Hike into history at Orwell site Sunday By Ellen Ricks “Everywhere you walk is in the footsteps of a soldier,” said Elsa Gilbertson of historic Mount Independence in Orwell, Vermont, the site of extensive fortifications built during the Revolutionary War. Gilbertson is regional historical site administrator for the site, which is offering history buffs and hikers alike a chance to walk into history on Sept. 3 on a hike through this historic landmark. The Mount Independence State Historic site hike is the kickoff event

of the Vermont Archeology Month program where you a can dig into Vermont’s rich, cultural history throughout September. The hike focuses on places from 240 years ago when our young country was fighting for its independences. Many New England soldiers were stationed on the Mount, and felt, according to Gilbertson, “that they were defending all of New England.” Join site interpreter Paul Andriscin and Elsa Gilbertson as they lead you through what’s been called one of the best-preserved Revolutionary War

archaeological sites in America, visiting the ruins of blockhouses, barracks and soldiers’ huts. One of the key points of the hike is the Southern Battery, build in June 1777 by the American troops and later occupied by the British and German troops. Gilbertson said her favorite part about these hikes is all the beautiful places, beautiful trails and fantastic beauty of nature that she gets to see and talk to the public about. “It really makes history come alive,” she said. Andriscin and Gilbertson will also

share historic antidotes on the hike, about how the New England solders didn’t quite get along with the solders from the other colonies. However, Gilbertson said, “they all came together and made something out of nothing.” The Hike into History event is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 but children under 15 get in free. The Mount Independence State Historical Site is located at 497 Mount Independence Road in Orwell. For more information, visit the Vermont State Historic Sites on Facebook.

Tour of Hydeville on Sept. 9 and of Castleton Village on Sept. 23 The Castleton Historical Society offers a pair of September walking tours, one spotlighting each of Castleton’s two most prominent villages. Retired history educator and local history researcher Joseph Doran will lead a history tour of Hydeville, starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9. This tour will begin at the Lake Bomoseen dam, which is just north of the intersection of Route 4A and Blissville Road, will progress eastward to the Hydeville green, and will conclude at the old Hydeville schoolhouse, which is

found at 1130 Rte. 4A. Two weeks later, starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, Holly Hitchcock, the president of Castleton Historical Society, will lead a tour of Main Street in the historic village of Castleton, beginning at the society’s own Higley house, which is located at 407 Main St. This tour will progress westward along Main Street, even beyond the ancient village green, to just past Glen Brook Avenue. Free rides back to vehicles left at Higley house will be provided. No admission will be charged

for either tour. For 79 years, the Castleton Women’s Club has presented “Castleton Colonial Day” during the summer. Those are self-guided walking/driving tours in which costumed women’s club volunteers greet and orient guests inside remarkable residences and other places of interest, many along Main Street. The historical society’s very occasional guided outdoor walking tours take a different approach. Doran notes that “the last public historical walking tour

through Hydeville was in the year 2001.” According to the State of Vermont’s Division for Historic Preservation, “Most buildings in the linear village of Hydeville Historic District, located at the outlet of Lake Bomoseen, date from the mid to late 1800s when it was a busy marble and slate processing center. Examples of many period styles can be found here – from the Greek and Gothic Revivals, Italianate, and Queen Anne, to the Colonial Revival. … As the primary promoter and later president of the Rutland and

Whitehall Railroad (1850), Mr. Araunah Hyde ensured a transportation link between his West Rutland marble quarry and his mill in the village which came to be known as ‘Hydeville.’ … The circa 1850 home of Pitt W. Hyde, brother and co-owner with Araunah, endures as an outstanding Gothic Revival style residence.” Doran’s expert tour of Hydeville will last approximately one hour. Hitchcock, the leader of the

Tour Continued from page 10 Main Street tour on Sept. 23, not only owns and lives in the 1823 Federal-style home that master joiner Thomas Reynolds Dake built for B. F. Langdon – with its two-story bays flanking its fanlit doorway – she was also employed by the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation to conduct research leading to the establishment of official historic districts in this region. The town of Castleton, for instance, encompasses nine state-registered historic districts: Crystal Haven, Eastern Lakeside, Avalon Beach, Point of Pines, Hydeville, Castleton Corners, Castleton Village, Southeastern

Lakeside, and Green Bay. According to the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation, “Castleton village, a historic district listed in the National Register of Historic Places, contains a wealth of architecturally distinguished buildings, particularly from the early 1800s, when it was an important regional trading center. Many of its Federal style houses were designed and built by Dake, and are richly detailed with elaborate doorways and windows and delicately carved ornament.” It is the purpose of Castleton Historical Society to discover, collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret artifacts, papers, and other materials that relate to or illustrate the historical development of Castleton, Vermont.

The Buel block, always a commercial structure, still stands proudly where the Castleton village green and the business district meet.

Get your pens ready: Annual Horace Greeley Writers’ Symposium Oct. 21 In its 15th year of offering the writers’ symposium, the non-profit Horace Greeley Foundation, funded through donations and proceeds from Symposium fees, is dedicated to promoting the writer’s trade and the spirit of public oration that was central to Greeley’s life. What is perhaps equally central to their mission is preserving the sense of place and memory of life in a small New England village. Each year, the foundation meets in those places where Greeley lived, worked, debated and voraciously read the books and journals that fed his intellectual curiosity. The Symposium will be held on Saturday, October 21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the United

Baptist Church, On the Green, East Poultney, Vermont. Registration for this event is $80 or $65 early registration before September 15, with a special student rate of $20. Registration is available online at www.horacegreeleyfoundation.org. Registration forms can also be found in brochures throughout the region, and at the Poultney Public Library. Onsite registration will be available at the event, as well. The Horace Greeley Writers’ Symposium is a celebration of Horace Greeley’s life. The symposium explores the art of writing as presented by publishers and writers in the fields of literature, poetry, philosophy, and history. This year’s keynote speaker

is Oregon author & filmmaker, Marilyn Johnston. She received a fellowship from Oregon Literary Arts, a Robert Penn Warren Award, the Donna J. Stone National Literary Award for Poetry, and won the 2017 Flash Fiction Contest by the Salmon Creek Journal. She founded the Mid-Valley Veterans’ Writers and is a creative writing instructor for the “Artists in the Schools” program, primarily working with incarcerated youth. Red Dust Rising, a collection of poems about her family’s healing from war, was nominated for a Pushcart Prize Additional featured speakers will include: Joni Cole, the author of Another Bad-Dog Book and a

regular contributor to The Writer magazine. Cole is founder of the Writer’s Center of White River Junction, Vermont. Jackie Gordon, a self-publisher and public speaker for many years, Gordon is often asked to speak on the personality profile based on her third book, “Do You Know You.” Laird Christensen, Director of the English and Writing programs at Green Mountain College, as well as, the Graduate program in Resilient and Sustainable Communities. The co-editor of Teaching About Place and Teaching North American Environmental Literature, his poems and essays have appeared in many publications and books. Central to his thinking, is that writers

have the ability to reclaim one of the most ancient roles of story tellers: offering useful reflections on the vast changes already in motion and helping frame our possible futures in ways that inspire courage, resilience, and action. The Symposium is a dynamic day of learning and nurturing for writers of all ages, experience levels, and genres. This event draws writers and authors from across New York and New England to Poultney, Vermont every year. For more information, or a link to the brochure and registration form, visit the foundation’s website at www. horacegreeleyfoundation.org or like them on Facebook at Horace Greeley Foundation.

Granville concert to benefit troops Sept. 10 By Krystle S. Morey The sixth annual Operation Adopt a Soldier benefit concert is set for Sept. 10 from noon to 3 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park on Quaker Street in Granville. Headlining the concert with patriotic and country music will be Granville’s Phil Hoyt. Hoyt’s granddaughters – Ashley, Kalyn, Taylor and Reagon – will sing the National Anthem. “Come support a good cause and listen to some good traditional country and military songs,” Hoyt said. There will be hamburgers, hot dogs, water and desserts for sale. There will also be 50-50 tickets sold for raffle items.

Telescope director chairs, two-ton floor jack from O’Reilly Auto Parts, a stand from Manchester Wood and gift certificates from area restaurants are among the raffle prizes. All proceeds will go to Operation Adopt a Soldier, an organization that sends care packages to soldiers and offers support for veterans. Each year, the benefit draws about 100 people. “I’d like to see a couple hundred,” Hoyt said, hoping more people will turn out this year. Last year, the concert raised $3,500. Hoyt said he’s already accepted several donations this year.

“We’ll probably do $2,000 before we hit the park,” he said, noting that he’d like to double that number by the end of the concert. Ray Duquette will drive the Tennessee Twister monster truck from Price Chopper to Veterans Memorial park to kick off the event. There will also be a Civil War reenactor present, a fly-over by Donny Latrellle and a display of military vehicles at the park. The National Guard will bring a few vehicles, but anyone who would like to display their military vehicles is welcome. Call Hoyt at 518-642-0536 or 518-

Concert Continued from page 14 337-6789 for more information. Hoyt performs each year around Sept. 11 to also encourage folks to remember how the terrorist attack affected the U.S. Hoyt served in the U.S. Army from 1977-80. He spent three years at West Point for transportation support. His father (WWII), brothers (Vietnam), uncles (Korea) and son (Marines) have also served in the military. Hoyt encourages all veter-

ans, whom he plans to recognize at the concert, to attend. “I’d love to see as many veterans in the park as we can get,” he said. “It’s as much to raise money as it is to recognize our veterans for their service.” Attendees are encouraged to bring items to donate to soldier care packages to the park. For a list of items needed, visit operationadoptasoldier.org. Monetary donations will also be accepted at the park. They can also be mailed to Operation Adopt a Soldier c/o Phil Hoyt, 253 Truthville Rd. Granville, New York 12832.
