The 28th annual Fair Haven Applefest, started in 1989 by Fair Haven Grade School, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the “Green” in Fair Haven Park. Applefest is sponsored by the Fair Haven Grade School for students to raise money for supplies for their classrooms. The kids sell hamburgers, hot dogs, and

sausages. The teachers put on a dunking booth and some of the classes put together crafts. Attendees can try their luck at the cake wheel, where for a quarter you can win cakes, cookies or cupcakes. There will also be a book sale at the library and a raffle for a Hubbardton Forge Lamp. As always, the festival is looking for vendors to really fill up the park, selling

all kinds of items, such as homemade jewelry, jellies, canned goods, crafts, baked books and maple products. Downtown merchants will be having sidewalk sales as well. The deadline to register as a vendor is Sept. 9. For more information about how to participate, call the Fair Haven Grade School at 802-265-3883 ext. 208 or email Lorna Morrison at lmorrison@arsu. org.

By Pamela Hayes Rehlen In October, two years ago, my husband and I hitched up our Airstream trailer and drove over to Lake Placid. Season-wise, that wasn’t a good decision. We learned that October is when the Adirondacks are shutting down, cold and darkness are coming on, and maybe there’s even some snow on the high peaks. This year, we were Adirondack-bound in late June, the time of the year when the deep green woods, the flashing boulderstrewn fishing streams, the granite cliff faces, the shadowed-surface, tarn-like, lakes, the distant forested mountain peaks, feel almost light-hearted. We found that Route 9 was lined with cars – because it seems that there’s no solitary communing with nature for a great number of wilderness visitors. I’ve always wondered how people can go off into dark forests without some concern about getting

The Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that its 2017 Citizen of the Year Award will be presented to Josephine “Jo” S. Williams. The public is cordially invited to join the Chamber in honorJosephine Williams ing Williams at an open house retirement party sponsored by the Chamber. lost, hurt, attacked by wild animals or the occasional deep-woods psychopath. I saw that there were even some visitors fearlessly rappelling up the faces of distant cliffs. When we got to Lake Placid Village, it had turned into a hot sunny day. We watched our fellow-arrivees - bikers from the annual Lake George Motorcycle Motorcade - thunder through town and park their rides in gleaming ranks along the edge of Mirror-Lake-shoreline-following Main Street. We figured our last year’s Meadowland New York State Park campground, in closeby Raybrook - just down the road from Lake Placid, just down the road from a big, Adirondack-style Price Chopper - would have plenty of open campsites, and they did. Across the highway from our campground there’s a Creeme stand, and just

Wimp Continued from front page over a split rail fence, The Tail of the Pup, BBQ place. The Tail of the Pup does a terrific business because it seems to have what a great number of Adirondack visitors are looking for: picnic tables under the pines, a live band performing nightly on an open air stage, some adjoining 1940s-era motel cabins - their interiors smelling of old wood and moth balls one cabin converted to a Tail of the Pup T shirt and souvenir shop, a lot of devil-maycare wiring running over the heads of the diners and leading to - among other things an ATM machine hidden in a little shed close to the ladies room. But the Raybrook Medium Security Correctional Facility is located just down the Lake Placid/Saranac Road, and often what look like inmates – maybe it’s just that they’ve been visiting inmates- are out for an evening and thread their way between the diners’ picnic tables heading toward one of the Tail of the Pup motel cabins which has been converted into a bar. The second day of our Adirondack vacation, we chugged around Lake Placid on a pontoon boat tour and learned from our boat captain guide that there was a

Citizen Continued from front page Williams was chosen by the Chamber for this award due to nominations for numerous reasons witnessed, described and endorsed by many residents. Williams’ life has been dedicated to her extended family and to the greater family of the Poultney community. In the community, as a member of the Woman’s Auxiliary of Poultney Hose Company, Williams started up the coffee urns and mass produced sandwiches for the firefighters when they rushed off to fight fires, night or day. Her dedication to the fire department, community safety and unity has been the way of life for Williams, all of her life so far. As a mother of five children, she brought up a future fire chief as well. Williams is a founding member and dedicated supporter of Poultney Rescue Squad and has helped it in many capacities. She continues to volunteer at their thrift shop to this day. As a lifetime member of Poultney Woman’s Club, Williams has volunteered for many of its programs which provide activities, entertainment, nourishment and assistance for the residents of Poultney. Within her spiritual family of the Catholic Church, of which Williams has been a lifetime member, she assists with many of its programs and its Woman’s Guild. She was church secretary for

Memorial Toll Road to the top - and a stone castle near the summit - of fourteen-milesaway Whiteface Mountain. We climbed into our car and headed off to find this Veterans’ Memorial Highway, built in 1931, where only smallish standing stones line the drop-away side of the road, and even sort of creeping along, as I insisted we do, it was terrifying. When we got to the dizzying-altitude end of the Memorial Highway, we faced a way-too-narrow, rampartshugging, parking lot, and a 1936 faux-medieval War Memorial Toll House with a dim, sourish-stone interior. The wind at an elevation of 4,610 feet could conceivably blow a small person – which I am – right off their feet. Alarmingly, our ascent didn’t end here. The Alpine Nature Trail continued beyond the castle to the very top of the mountain, where we caught a glimpse of the summit house weather station. This final hike started with wide stone steps and a reassuringly-substantial rusted iron railing, but a cold wind was tearing up from the vast drop-away below, and the steps didn’t continue although the heavy iron hand railing did. Soon, it was just a scramble over economy-carsized boulders. I realized that I wasn’t equal to this, so I told my hus-

band to go ahead, and I rested for awhile on an antediluvian granite slab. When I looked back up the mountain, he had grown tiny and then disappeared into what appeared in the far-distance to be a toy town weather installation. I headed back to the truck, down the treacherous path, through a castle archway, into the parking lot, and out of the wind. Two of my grandparents came from Schroon Lake, Horicon, and Moriah. It was mostly chance - a sort of opportunity-foraging - that brought them from their hardscrabble Adirondack farmsteads across Lake Champlain to gentler-seeming Vermont. Returned to the truck, the heater on, waiting for my husband, I thought about my Adirondack forbearers and imagined them, ghosts drifting past in a buckboard weighed down with farm impedimenta. No problem for them getting to the inhospitable summit of Whiteface Mountain. If they noticed me, their unworthy descendant, shivering in a truck in the parking lot, I just knew they’d be thinking, ‘What a wimp.’

many years and she is wellknown amongst the church community for her famous baked beans which she bakes for most funerals and other celebrations. She also sings in church almost every week. Williams’ dedication to the community has overflowed often into many other areas as well through gifts of her time, knowledge and monetary contributions. These include, but are not limited to, programs and events of J. Claire Carmody No. 39 and its Auxiliary; to the local women’s barbershop chorus; to Poultney school band programs and Poultney’s Town Band; to Poultney’s July 4 celebrations including the Dip Dinner and Strawberry Social; Poultney Booster Club; Boy and Girl Scouts of America; Poultney Area St. David’s Society; Young At Heart Senior Center; Poultney Food Shelf; Poultney Cemetery Association and Poultney Historical Society. On two separate occasions when the St. David’s Society hosted 90 Penrhyn Choir guests from Wales, Williams volunteered her home as a host family site and welcomes choir members into it and her family’s life by providing lodging, meals, fellowship and respite. She routinely invites folks not having family nearby to join her family’s holiday dinners or sends dinners to those having to work holidays. Williams’ energy and caring for the community overflowed often through her career as Poultney’s town clerk, an elected position which she held for many years before retirement. To

this day, Williams continues to provide information to the town as the “elder” so to speak. All that Williams has done and given to the community she has managed with grace, humility and her quiet, behind-the-scenes approach. Williams’ family and close friends often refer to her as “The Eveready Bunny” for her “get up and go.” Everyone knows that she will continue to “get up and go” for the extended family of the citizens of Poultney. The Chamber’s Citizen of the Year Award, presented annually since 1990, honors a resident citizen who has made major contributions to the betterment of Poultney; has distinguished herself or himself through outstanding service to the community and typifies the true spirit of service and self-sacrifice in representing the finest ideals of Poultney citizenship – a real “unsung hero” of Poultney. As Poultney’s 2017 Citizen of the Year, Williams will also be the Grand Marshal of the 2018 July 4 parade in Poultney. Past recipients are remembered in an historic accounting published on the website of the Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce. For more information about Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce or its Citizen of the Year award program contact the Chamber at: 802-2872010 or poultneyvtchamber@ gmail.com. Tour Continued from front page Blissville Road, will progress eastward to the Hydeville green, and will conclude at the old Hydeville schoolhouse, which is found at 1130 Rte. 4A. Two weeks later, starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, Holly Hitchcock, the president of Castleton Historical Society, will lead a tour of Main Street in the historic village of Castleton, beginning at the society’s own Higley house, which is located at 407 Main St. This tour will progress westward along Main Street, even beyond the ancient village green, to just past Glen Brook Avenue. Free rides back to vehicles left at Higley house will be provided. No admission will be charged for either tour. For 79 years, the Castleton Women’s Club has presented “Castleton Colonial Day” during the summer. Those are selfguided walking/driving tours in which costumed women’s club volunteers greet and orient guests inside remarkable residences and other places of interest, many along Main Street. The historical society’s very occasional guided outdoor walking tours take a different approach. Doran notes that “the last public historical walking tour through Hydeville was in the year 2001.” According to the State of Vermont’s Division for

Historic Preservation, “Most buildings in the linear village of Hydeville Historic District, located at the outlet of Lake Bomoseen, date from the mid to late 1800s when it was a busy marble and slate processing center. Examples of many period styles can be found here – from the Greek and Gothic Revivals, Italianate, and Queen Anne, to the Colonial Revival. … As the primary promoter and later president of the Rutland and Whitehall Railroad (1850), Mr. Araunah Hyde ensured a transportation link between his West Rutland marble quarry and his mill in the village which came to be known as ‘Hydeville.’ … The circa 1850 home of Pitt W. Hyde, brother and co-owner with Araunah, endures as an outstanding Gothic Revival style residence.” Doran’s expert tour of Hydeville will last approximately one hour. Hitchcock, the leader of the Main Street tour on Sept. 23, not only owns and lives in the 1823 Federal-style home that master joiner Thomas Reynolds Dake built for B. F. Langdon – with its two-story bays flanking its fanlit doorway – she was also employed by the Vermont Division for

By Krystle S. Morey The sixth annual Operation Adopt a Soldier benefit concert is set for Sept. 10 from noon to 3 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park on Quaker Street in Granville. Headlining the concert with patriotic and country music will be Granville’s Phil Hoyt. “Come support a good cause and listen to some good traditional country and military songs,” Hoyt said. There will be hamburgers, hot dogs, water and desserts for sale. There will also be 50-50 tickets sold for raffle items. Telescope director chairs, two-ton floor jack from O’Reilly Auto Parts, a stand from Manchester Wood and gift certificates from area restaurants are among the raffle prizes. All proceeds will go to Operation Adopt a Soldier, an organization that sends care packages to soldiers and offers support for veterans. Each year, the benefit draws about 100 people. “I’d like to see a couple hundred,” Hoyt said, hoping more people will turn out this year. Last year, the concert raised $3,500. Hoyt said he’s already accepted several donations this year. “We’ll probably do $2,000 before we hit the park,” he said, noting that he’d like to double that

The town of Castleton, for instance, encompasses nine state-registered historic districts: Crystal Haven, Eastern Lakeside, Avalon Beach, Point of Pines, Hydeville, Castleton Corners, Castleton Village, Southeastern Lakeside, and Green Bay. According to the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation, “Castleton village, a historic district listed in the National Register of Historic Places, contains a wealth of architecturally distinguished buildings, particularly from the early 1800s, when it was an important regional trading center. Many of its Federal style houses were designed and built by Dake, and are richly detailed with elaborate doorways and windows and delicately carved ornament.” It is the purpose of Castleton Historical Society to discover, collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret artifacts, papers, and other materials that relate to or illustrate the historical development of Castleton, Vermont.

Historical society to meet Sept. 17 Educator, writer and archaeologist Steve Butz will give a presentation titled “The Shays’ Settlement Project: A Story of Revolt and Archaeology” at the 48th annual meeting of the Middletown Springs Historical Society on Sunday, Sept. 17, at the Historical Society Building, 10 Park Ave. The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. with a dessert buffet, and a brief business meeting with election of trustees for 2017-18. Butz will lecture at 2:30 pm. The Shays’ Settlement Project is the first formal archaeological study of the ruins of a fortified 18th century settlement located in the mountains of Southern Vermont near the New York border. The settlement was founded by Captain Daniel Shays and his fellow refugees who fled from Massachusetts following the uprising he commanded there in 1787. Incredibly, this lost site of American history lay hidden

and untouched for over 200 years until its rediscovery in April 2013. Butz’s lecture on the Shays’ Settlement Project weaves together several themes: the tale of the present day archaeological investigation; the history of Shays’ Vermont settlement; the story of his heroic life as a captain in the Continental Army; his role in the infamous “Shays’Rebellion”; and his impact on American law. The discovery of the settlement has revealed a lost piece of American history, and is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Vermont today. The Shays’ Settlement Project is led by Butz, who gained his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Cornell University, has taught at the college and secondary school level for 20 years and has written numerous books on science, technology, and history. Butz also created a public

education project about the settlement, which includes a summer archaeology field school at the site. More than 100 students have participated in the program so far, learning techniques in archaeological fieldwork, surveying, mapmaking, and digital imaging by taking part in the scientific study of the settlement. The project has been in the national news and was featured on the TV show, “History. Where it Happened.” Butz’s’s book about the project, “Shays’ Settlement in Vermont: A Story of Revolt and Archaeology”, is published by The History Press. For more information visit: shayssettlement.org The Historical Society’s dining room is accessible to people with disabilities and all are welcome at this free event. Exhibit rooms will also be open 2 - 4 pm. For more information, call David Wright at 802-235-2376.

Art at Castleton Free Library The library is a place filled not only with inspiring words, but also art – art in magazines such as Art in America, Architectural Digest, or American Craft; art in the nonfiction collections of how-to and art history books; picture book art (about 3,000 titles worth) in a myriad of styles and mediums; a graphic novel collection; art presentations and workshops. The library is pleased to be offering a program this week on the work of 19th century painter James Hope, who lived and worked in Castleton for about twenty years. Don and Carol Thompson will be presenting this power point lecture on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. The Thompsons are retired teachers, authors of six local history books, and active members of the Castleton Historical Society. Their program, “Castleton, Vermont through the Eyes of James Hope,” focuses on the life and accomplishments of the artist and will include many contemporaneous photos of the village along with numerous images of Hope’s work. The program is free, accessible, and open to all. Hope was born in Scotland, but moved to Canada with his father when his mother died. When he lost his father to cholera, teenaged Hope traveled to Fair Haven, possibly on foot, to

become a wheelwright’s apprentice. Hope’s art, especially portraiture, developed during a period of convalescence from an accident. He attended Castleton Seminary, and later went on to teach painting and drawing there while living on South Street - in the home that is now Castleton University’s public safety office. Hope is most known for his landscapes, many depicting the Slate Valley, upstate New York, and the White Mountains, and also for his dramatic Civil War battle paintings. He had served in the Union Army, sketching scenes that he later rendered in paint. For those who prefer battle imagery that’s more removed from reality, we have a growing collection of graphic novels featuring the intense drama of superheroes as well as ordinary characters caught in extraordinary circumstances. From Captain Raptor and his hyper-realistic crew of space dinosaurs battling evil pirates; to Squish, an ordinary amoeba inspired by Super Amoeba to fight back against bullies; or the Olympians series by George O’Connor, these books serve up eye candy in small boxes to reluctant readers of all ages. Enjoy the visual storytelling for its own sake, or as a springboard to wordier books. The library has them too.

Fall concert series in Tinmouth By Ellen Ricks For almost 20 years the Tinmouth Firehouse concert series has been a staple for the community by providing a wonderful and unique array of musical entertainers. While many of concert series start and end in the summer, the old firehouse likes to move to their own beat to by providing music concerts in the fall, to really move us into the season. This year’s concert series will kick off on Saturday Sept. 8 with Vermont Troubadour Jon Gailmor, whose unique and wacky songs and humor will start the concert series on a high note. Jon Gailmor, 69, was born in New York, raised in Philadelphia and currently hangs his hat in Elmore, Vermont, has been writing songs, for what he calls “prenatal to prehistoric” since the early 1970’s. His original songs are known for his humor and absurdity on the surface, but

underneath have a spectrum of deep, relatable emotion and feelings. Schoolchildren of all ages throughout Vermont have learned the art of songwriting from Jon, just as has learned from them. The Old Firehouse was built 50 years ago, and has laid dormant for years after the new firehouse was built, until it was discovered that the old firehouse had great acoustics. Thus the concert series was born. Each performance in the series starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation with a suggested $10-$15 donation. Guests will be able to enjoy the music while snacking and sipping on homemade desserts, coffee and tea. Ninety percent of the money donated and raised at the concert will go the performers while the rest will go to paying the town of Tinmouth for the Old Firehouse’s upkeep. The concert series will run through September and October. The

Twig Remembers Dick Clemente What a great communicator. When you came away from a chat with him, you were almost always left with something new or different and words of wisdom.

Back in the 1950’s and 1960’s in this area he for sure would have been a “WPTR Good Guy.” May God be with you, Dick Clemente.

Dave Parker Dave was the owner of a large well drilling company out of East Poultney but you’d hardly notice it when you talked to him. Hey, he was a Parker from Middletown and that’s a good

thing. I sure am going to miss all those chats at the hardware store. He is another one of those guys who left us way too early. God bless Dave Parker.

Milly Mashak I met Milly through her sister, Camilla, who was a classmate of my dad’s. Now when Camilla was in her later years she was in charge of gathering goods for Fair Haven Concerned. She knew she could always get her classmate Larry Canfield’s son to help her unload the goods at the old bingo hall on Prospect Street. One time it was 40 fro-

zen turkeys to give to poor families for Thanksgiving – cold job. Now Milly, being from Hampton, became a very good friend and customer at Williams Hardware. Sisters – I found the same mannerisms – gentle, kind, generous, loving souls. God bless Milly Mashak.

erosity of the people donating items in the Northeast to be sent to help with Harvey relief in Texas. “It shows me why mankind is worth fighting for and why we are redeemable,” Bernhard said. “It’s incredible to see people come together … Democrats, Republicans, blacks, whites. Since the storm there have been no talks of politics, it’s just been everyone coming together and helping each other.” Bernhard has helped with relief following other storms in the past, but he said Harvey is the worst he’s seen in Texas. “I’ve never seen anything like what we are seeing right now,” he said. “Hundreds of thousands of people have lost everything, all over.” The Acts Community Church was damaged by Harvey. At one point, there were more than six inches of water in the church building. “The main focus is to take care of the people of our church and the community first, then we’ll look at our own building,” Bernhard said. The church, led by Bernhard, is also sending teams to help clean homes of people who have lost much due to the floods. “We’ve helped clean 30-something homes already,” Bernhard said Tuesday.
