Judges will measure the jump based on height and length of the jump. There will be prizes for first-, second- and third-place longest jumps in categories from novice to pro. “Some dogs are quick to pick it up,” said Beth Saradarian, associate director at the Humane Society. “Some take a few tries to be able to do it.”

The Open House is a free event and open to the public. The Braintree School was built in 1852 and operated as a school through eighth grade until 1934. The school was a part of the Jack and Marjorie Jones family farmstead until 1973 when it was donated to the Pawlett Historical Society by their descendant Donald Jones and his wife Anna. In 2008, thanks to a grant from the Freeman Foundation and the
Preservation Trust of Vermont, the floor was restained, the woodwork refinished and the walls and ceiling refinished with horsehair plaster as used in the original structure. The building is furnished with desk/chair units authentic to a later period, along with a stove, teacher’s slate board and a 1916 map of the United States of America. Further details of the school’s structure and history, and a summary of the history of education in Pawlet, are available within the Braintree School. ‘Fill the Cupboard’ food drive With the need for food assistance steady and strong, Green Mountain Power recently kicked off the 2017 GMP Fill the Cupboard Challenge – with a goal of collecting 33,000 food items for those in need. The annual event benefits the Rutland Community Cupboard, and for the past several years has collected more than 13 percent of the Cupboard’s annual needs. Businesses, clubs, schools, sports teams, houses of worship and other organizations are encouraged to register for the challenge, then collect food donations between now and Oct. 6 and deliver them to the Rutland Community Cupboard. GMP will donate 25 cents to the Cupboard for every item collected, up to a total of $5,000. GMP will also donate $500 in the name of the group that collects the most food. Participants should pre-register for the challenge by calling Community Cupboard Director Kelly Giancola at 518747-6119. “Fill the Cupboard is a critical piece of the food puzzle,” said GMP Vice President Steve Costello, who has coordinated the event for more than a decade. “Through creativity, grit and a lot of hard work, dozens of organizations have helped make this a success for the Community Cupboard and

the people they help through tough times each month.” In 2016, the Rutland Community Cupboard distributed more than 253,381 items to area residents, serving nearly 520 families each month. Just over 33,000 of those items were donated during the GMP Fill the Cupboard Challenge. Participants in the Challenge can solicit food donations from employees, customers, vendors or others, and are encouraged to conduct their own food drives as part of the Fill the Cupboard Challenge. “Some businesses offer incentives to their employees, Rutland Rotary collects donations at its annual raffle, and high school teams often collect at their games or on door-todoor food drives,” Costello said. “No matter how they collect food, the impact is substantial – in fact, it is critical to the Community Cupboard’s ability to help those in need.” Giancola said despite an improving economy, demand has remained steady. “Due to the generosity of the community, The Cupboard is there for senior citizens and

others in need when a crisis occurs,” Giancola said. “Whether they face an unexpected health issue, car repairs or underemployment, we see Rutland residents every week who never expected to be seeking food assistance.” Giancola, who has been in her job for two years, said she continues to be surprised by the need, but is thrilled to be able to help neighbors who are desperate for help. “We all learned how to share as children, and that’s really the epitome of what we do at the Community Cupboard and what the GMP Fill the Cupboard Challenge is all about,” Giancola said. Participants may deliver food to the Community Cupboard as often as they like, and should identify their organization as a participant in the Challenge when dropping off food items. Deliveries can be made to the Community Cupboard Monday, Wednesday or Friday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday 4-6 p.m. through Oct. 6. Anyone with questions about the Challenge may call Giancola at 802-747-6119.

Annual apple pie contest The Vermont Great 2-4-6-8K Run, Walk, Relay Did you know that the first Apple Festival was held in the 1990’s? Judy Leech and Lorraine Brown came up with the idea for the Chamber of Commerce to sponsor. Along with the Apple Pie Contest, there was a contest for a toddler Apple Prince and Princess. There were also apple decorating, line dancers, and cider made on site with an old fashioned cider press and vendors. Skip ahead to today for the ninth annual Apple Pie contest currently sponsored by the Fair Haven Historical Society during the Fair Haven Grade School’s annual Apple Festival held in the park. Non-professional bakers that have entered before are welcome as well as newcomers. The event will be held on Sept. 23 with a rain date of Sept. 30.
Rules for entering are: • Pies must be entered in by 11 a.m. Judging will take place at noon.
• Pies should be in disposable tins. • Pies must be at least eight inches in diameter. • Pies must have a clear plastic wrap over them. • Pies must be primarily made of apples. • Pies become the property of the historical society. • All bakers must be non-professionals. There will be a youth division for children 12 years old and younger. These pies can be smaller than eight inches in diameter.
Apple decorating contest: Realistic Styrofoam apples will be available for decorating, similar to last year. The use of the Styrofoam helped eliminate the bee problem. Apples for decorating will be available for sale for $2 each on Sept. 15 at the Historical Office in the Town Hall from 4 - 5:30 p.m. or by contacting Brown at 802-265-3843. No real apples will be accepted at the contest.

Rutland Area Toastmasters invites Lakes Region residents to its open house to meet members and watch special guest speakers on Sept. 19. Laurie Musick-Wright and Peg Flory will talk about the importance of communication skills for today’s professional. “Rutland Area Toastmasters provides a supportive and positive environment where members have the opportunity to develop their communication and leadership skills,” says Richard Baker, club president. Following our speakers will be a Table Topics demonstration. “Table Topics are one of my favorite parts of the meeting,” says club treasurer Bill Forbes. “This is where guests and members can choose to speak for one to two minutes
on a topic proposed by the Topics Master. It helps you think and speak clearly on your feet.” The Rutland Area Toastmasters Club is not a service club; it is an educational organization open to all. The group is best described as a workshop in which each member learns and develops communication and leadership skills through constant participation. Organizers say every member sees measurable improvement. Whether you are working on learning how speak in front of others for the first time or honing your presentation skills Toastmaster’s is the place for you, they said. The Rutland Area Toastmasters Open House is Sept. 19 at CCV Rutland, locat-
ed at 60 West St., from 6-7:30 p.m. For more information, email cbwight@gmail.com. Rutland Area Toastmasters meets regularly on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 6 p.m. at the Rutland High School. Carl Becker said, “History is what the present chooses to remember of the past “. Holland’s talk will explore how the Battle of Bennington has taken shape in historical mem-
ory in writing, in works of art, and in public commemorations. Holland, of Shaftsbury, is the author of A guide to the Battle of Bennington and the Bennington Monument, Robert Frost in Bennington County, and other books. A 1971 graduate of Bennington College in Literature and Languages, he holds a Ph.D. in English from
the University of London. He is the former Chair of the English Department of Anatolia College in Thessaloniki, Greece, and has also worked as a professional voice actor. The program will take place in the Bennington Museum, in the Ada Paresky Educational Center and is free and open to the public.
Poultney Area St. David’s Society receives donation Bennington Museum to host historic author Poultney Area St. David’s Society, the Welsh heritage fellowship organization of the Vermont/New York Slate Valley region, recently presented Poultney Cemetery Association with a gift of $150 for its 2017 annual fund needs. The gift was triplegiven. First, the St. David’s Society’s Treasurer, Marilyn R. Duke, recently celebrated a birthday; and to her surprise, her family presented her with a generous check payable to the St. David’s Society. Duke’s family said it was given in that manner because her family knows that both the St. David’s Society and her own Welsh heritage hold a very special place in her heart. Next, Duke presented the check to the St. David’s Society’s Board of Directors and requested they gift it to a local charity and suggested the cemetery. She suggested it because her Welsh heritage families, as well as the families of a great many others of Poultney’s Welsh heritage residents, are at rest in the beautiful, historic property.
Third, the St. David’s Society’s Board of Directors padded the gift slightly and brought the total gift to $150. The Society gifted it in appreciation of Marilyn’s dedication to the nearly 30-year-old Society; and also in memory of the many Welsh heritage families at rest in the historic property, now nearly 155 years old. Poultney Area St. David’s Society extends a sincere “thank you” to Duke and to her family, as well as to the many volunteers of Poultney Cemetery Association through the many years who have overseen the care of the property. And, belatedly, “Happy Birthday, Marilyn” from all your Welsh heritage friends from near and far. Poultney Area St. David’s Society is a 501 (c )(3) fellowship organization. It has both a Facebook page and a website which is hosted by Rootsweb.ancestry.com; its email is pasds1988@gmail. com and mailing address is: 60 Norton Avenue, Poultney, VT 05764-1029. Message phone: (802)-287-5744.

Rob McClallen, tournament chairman, said “the Baker family’s selflessness in sharing their son, brother and cousin’s legacy with us during their time of grief is c true testament to the spirit of giving the MSJ experience imparted on us as alumni and friends.” The cost to play is $100 for non-Rutland County Club members and $80 for members. I remember him in high school with his close friend Marty Denofer, Jr. They were everywhere together and were always having fun. After high school he took a job with Highway Oil at Castleton Corners and took the opening for store manager. It soon became obvious how good he was and he was elevated to troubleshoot for all of the stores. He once again excelled and had a great career with the company. God bless Hugh Tredwell.

Dresden man sets sights on rattlesnake state law By Matthew Saari The Dresden Town Board meeting Monday night proved uneventful at best, with officials cranking through the agenda in under 10 minutes. However, when supervisor George Gang opened the session to public comments, animal control officer George Ferguson said one word that sparked some debate – rattlesnakes. “Why can’t we have a law in our own town; let each town control their own or each county control their own rattlesnakes,” Ferguson said. Gang’s response was simple and matter-of-fact. “You can’t kill rattlesnakes,”
he said. “You can’t kill them – that’s it!” The species in question is the timber rattlesnake. Under New York State law the timber rattlesnake is considered a threatened species which means it cannot be hunted, trapped or otherwise exterminated. The protection law stems from area residents overhunting the reptile decades ago. “There was a $5 bounty on the tails,” Ferguson said. The Department of Environmental Conservation website states that bounties were outlawed in 1971. “We can’t override state law,” said Gang.
CU Trail Blazers A group of Castleton University freshman volunteered their time and talent on a Saturday morning at the Castleton Community Center helping to resurface the Walking Trail with slate chips donated by Hadeka Slate Corp. The one-third mile trail is open to all and provides a hard packed surface suitable for wheelchairs and walkers or just for a pleasant stroll through the meadow and woods across from the Center.
Historical society to meet this Sunday Educator, writer and archaeologist Steve Butz will give a presentation titled “The Shays’ Settlement Project: A Story of Revolt and Archaeology” at the 48th annual meeting of the Middletown Springs Historical Society on Sunday, Sept. 17, at the Historical Society Building, 10 Park Ave. The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. with a dessert buffet, and a brief business meeting with election of trustees for 2017-18. Butz will lecture at 2:30 pm. The Shays’ Settlement Project is the first formal archaeological study of the ruins of a fortified 18th century settlement located in the mountains of Southern Vermont near the New York border. The settlement was founded by Captain Daniel Shays and his fellow refugees who fled from Massachusetts following the uprising he commanded there in 1787. Incredibly, this lost site of American history lay hidden and untouched for over 200 years until its rediscovery in April 2013. Butz’s lecture on the Shays’ Settlement Project weaves together several themes: the tale of the present day archaeological investigation; the history of Shays’ Vermont settle-
ment; the story of his heroic life as a captain in the Continental Army; his role in the infamous “Shays’Rebellion”; and his impact on American law. The discovery of the settlement has revealed a lost piece of American history, and is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Vermont today. The Shays’ Settlement Project is led by Butz, who gained his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Cornell University. Butz also created a public education project about the settlement, which includes a summer archaeology field school at the site. More than 100 students have participated in the program so far, learning techniques in archaeological fieldwork, surveying, mapmaking, and digital imaging by taking part in the scientific study of the settlement. The project has been in the national news and was featured on the TV show, “History. Where it Happened.” The Historical Society’s dining room is accessible to people with disabilities and all are welcome at this free event. Exhibit rooms will also be open 2 - 4 pm. For more information, call David Wright at 802-235-2376.
“I want to see it changed,” Ferguson said. “How do we get it started?” Gang advised that Ferguson would have to contact either state Sen. Betty Little or Assemblyman Dan Stec to get the ball rolling. Following the meeting, Ferguson said he brought the issue before the town board at the behest of several residents of Huletts Landing who asked something be done about the reptile. “I’ve been approached by people in Huletts; everybody’s ready to sign,” Ferguson said referring to a petition to amend the rattlesnake protection law. Ferguson has been Dresden’s animal control officer for five years but the rattlesnake issue has only surfaced during the past year. “There’s been an abundance of rattlesnakes seen,” Ferguson said.
As an animal control officer, not a dog control officer, Ferguson is called upon to deal with any animal pest: dogs, cats and even rattlesnakes. But because of their protected nature, Ferguson has been warned off rattlesnakes by the state Department of Environmental Conservation. “I called ENCON and they said ‘no, you’re not even allowed to touch that snake – you call us,’” he said. “Well they’re over in Ray Brook; where’s the snake going to be by the time they get here?” Google Maps lists the drive from Ray Brook to Dresden as being one hour and 53 minutes. Ferguson believes that the resurgence is due to climate change. “They’re multiplying; we don’t get the winters that we used to get,” he said. Although the town of
Dresden is unable to change the rattlesnake protection law, Ferguson said he fully intends to follow up with Little’s office. “Betty Little happens to be a friend of my wife’s family so we’ll go to her first,” he said. Ferguson added that he will be placing petitions that concerned residents can sign at the Dresden town hall at 102 Clemons Center Rd. in Clemons.
