It’s been the apple of Fair Haven’s eye for 28 years – Applefest – and it will take place again on Saturday, Sept. 23, on the “Green” in Fair Haven Park. The event is hosted by the Fair Haven Grade School. Applefest was organized in 1989 by Lorraine Brown and Judy Leech and the former Fair Haven Chamber of Commerce. The school took over the event when the chamber disbanded. Students will be hosting a variety of fun activities for the community and each grade will have its own booth where the kids will be selling hamburgers, hotdogs, sausages and some classes will be doing crafts. Students ä Pg. 11-13 and community members alike will also be able to take a shot at their favorite teachers in the dunking booth. There will also be a cake wheel where, for a quarter, attendees can win cakes, cookies or cupcakes. Raffles including one for a Hubbardton Forge Lamp will also take place throughout the day. The Fair Haven Rotary is planning a “Stuff the Derby Trailer” at Applefest to collect food and items to donate to food shelves. The Fair Haven Historical Society will host its ninth annual pie contest at the festival as well. This is a contest for non-professional bakers, or “home bakers.”

Giant car show this Sunday n More than 200 classic vehicles to be on display By Krystle S. Morey The 31st annual Autumn Leaves Car Show, hosted by the Granville Area Chamber of Commerce, is this Sunday. Each year the show draws hundreds of classic and custom car enthusiasts to the Granville Little League Complex on Glen Street in the village. More than 700 people attended last year. “They come from all over,” said Denise Davies, the chamber’s corresponding secretary. “There are locals that come, but there are people from the Albany area, Vermont … and there are some who come from three or four hours away.” More than 200 vehicles are expected to be on display this year.

A young car enthusiast admires a classic car at last year’s Autumn Leaves Car Show. “There’s a good mix,” Davies said. “It’s classic cars, it’s new cars, it’s hot rods … it’s all different types of vehicles.” Those wishing to display a car, motorcycle or truck in the show can enter from 8 to 11 a.m. on the day of the event for

$20. Participants will receive a slate dash plaque, donated by Sheldon Slate; a goodie bag; two door prize tickets; a gas card drawing ticket; and a 2017 Autumn Leaves Car Show commemorative T-shirt.

The show also features auto trivia, food and music.

Food, beverages and ice cream will be for sale by Stewart’s Shops, the American Legion and the Rotary Club. Children will be able to “stuff a friend” at the festival, creating their own stuffed animals.

Downtown merchants will have sidewalk sales as well. Lorna Morrison, a secretary at Fair Haven Grade School, has been running AppleFest for three years and she says her favorite thing about the festival is how the community gets so involved in it. “Seeing the town get together to support the school and their kids,” Morrison said. Breast Cancer walk Oct. 22 in Castleton The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast CancerSouthern Vermont Walk will be held Sunday, Oct. 22 at Castleton University to support the fight against the second leading cause of cancer death in women and ensure no one faces breast cancer alone. Registration for this noncompetitive, inspirational event begins at 11 a.m. and the walk is set to start at 1 p.m. Dollars raised by Making Strides supporters help the American Cancer Society ensure no one faces breast cancer alone by funding innovative breast cancer research; promoting education and risk reduction; and providing comprehensive patient support to those who need it most. Since 1993, more than 13 million supporters have raised more than $810 million nationwide. Last year, over 400 walkers in southern Vermont helped to raise more than $42,000. According to the American Cancer Society Cancer Facts

and Figures 2017, an estimated 252,710 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,610 will die from the disease this year. “Because of the determination of Making Strides supporters, the American Cancer Society is there for people in every community affected by breast cancer, whether they’re currently dealing with a diagnosis, may face one in the future, or will avoid it altogether because of education and risk reduction,” said David Carmichael, community manager of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. “At the event, communities embrace a bittersweet mix of purpose – celebrating survivorship and paying meaningful tributes to loved ones lost. From research to education, prevention to diagnosis, and treatment to recovery, we provide support to everyone impacted by breast cancer.” For more informaion, visit makingstrideswalk.org/rutlandvt or contact Carmichael at 802-872-6325 or email him at dave.carmichael@cancer.org.

Cricket Blue to perform in Tinmouth Sept. 22 Vermont-based folk duo Cricket Blue is inspired by diverse aspects of the American folk tradition: old and current, popular and obscure. Laura Heaberlin and Taylor Smith write songs marked by closeknit harmonies and words about myth, confusion, love, and the ends of things. They’ll be on

Twig Remembers Dick Frazier Wow, I’ve known Dick for 60 years. He’s been a lot of things – a teacher, a selectman, a member of the FHUHS school board and an accountant. Dick was a mainstay in the choir at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church. He was three years behind me in school, but where I got to know him best was as members of Fran LaPlaca’s FHUHS alumni chorus. We had a great group of guys who occupied the back two rows as baritones and bass.

We had Bob Dollar, Steve Whalen, Dave Garvey and Rick Buxton. We had a lot of fun back there that made for a relaxed atmosphere to work. And now that nice little Catholic boy is heading into a place he always dreamt of. I’m going to end with a Frankie Lane song from the early 1950’s. “Up in mornin’, out of the job, work like devil for my pay. And that lucky ole sun, has nothin’ to do, but roll around heaven all day.” Enjoy Mr. Frazier, enjoy!

Castleton Free Library to hold book discussions in October Most of us, at least most who haunt libraries, have a craving for documentation and reflection on the events, personal and societal, that shape our lives. Part of the library mission is to foster such reflection. We thank Friends of Castleton Free Library for purchasing new print subscriptions to the Wall Street Journal (daily), the New York Times (Sunday edition) and the Rutland Herald. We thank the Vermont Humanities Council for a Vermont Reads grant: 75 copies of Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson to be distributed throughout our community. These gifts provide us with immediacy and memoir, two different means of making sense of our world. Woodson grew up during a complicated, tumultuous time in Greenville, Brooklyn, and Ohio, when “the world was changing like crazy.” She describes her childhood as “at once ordinary and amazing.” As she reflects back on small and big moments through short narrative poems, we glimpse marches, buses, prison cells, and families splitting; but also the power of family love. We experience the touch of hair being combed straight with Dixie Peach hair grease, the soft whispers of stories, the scent of piney night air while fireflies are caught in mason

jars. Woodson writes not as an analytical adult, but as an adult remembering her child’seye perception of the world. Our first discussion of Brown Girl Dreaming will be Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. at the library on Main Street. You may pick up a copy of the book any time, but you don’t need to finish it to participate in the discussion. Although it was published for young adults, its themes will resonate with older readers; Woodson is now 54 – thus her landscape will be familiar territory. On Thursday, October 19 at 7 p.m. we continue with a Writers’ Workshop for anyone interested in memoir, using Woodson’s book as a launching point for personal journeys. On that evening, attendees will schedule a follow-up session for sharing their stories with each other and discussing possibilities of reaching wider audiences through a blog, web project, or exhibit. We’ll also showcase other memoirs in our library collection, as well as books about the writing process. These programs are free, open to all, and independent of one another – please feel welcome to participate in any way that works best for you. For more information call 802-4685574, or ask when you stop to pick up your book or read the newspaper.

Disaster drill will test and train emergency responsers Dozens of volunteers, hospital employees, and local emergency responders will take part in a mock disaster exercise this Saturday at a location within Rutland City. This full scale exercise will test the preparedness and response of local, regional and state agencies should a real crisis occur. The mock drill has been planned since January and is used as an opportunity to train more than 100 Emergency Medical Service providers on Warm Zone entry with law enforcement. The event, sponsored by Rutland Regional Medical Center and Rutland City Police Department, will focus on response plans for an actual disaster which would trigger a sudden influx of patients, media, and concerned community members. This full scale mass-casualty exercise is being conducted in collaboration with multiple partner agencies including the Rutland Regional Medical Center, Local Police and Fire Departments, and District 10 EMS Agencies.

The scenario for the exercise includes a simulated incident and simulated response from multiple regional agencies. The local community can expect to see emergency responders at Rutland Regional Medical Center looking and acting as if it were a true disaster. Normal hospital Emergency Department operations and patient care, along with operations of participating agencies, will not be affected by the exercise. Hospitals are required by the Joint Commission to have disaster response plans in place and conduct periodic exercises for improvement and training purposes. “The goal of this exercise is to enhance working relationships and collaboration between the agencies and organizations involved,” said Beth Winter, exercise director and emergency preparedness manager at Rutland Regional. “It’s a mock exercise, but a very real test of our ability to respond to an actual disaster. We appreciate the cooperation of everyone involved.”

Lawn sale in Middletown Springs There will be a lawn sale on the Village Green in Middletown Springs on Saturday, Sept. 23 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Up-cycled treasures, clean gently used items:

Letters Community and businesses thanked for donations Dear Editor, On Sept. 29 I held a basket raffle at the Castleton American Legion in memory of Maxwell Burns. Exactly three months earlier, 10-year-old Castleton resident Maxwell lost his life in a tragic accident in Benson. Max was my like a son to my husband and I. He was my son Michael’s best friend. After this tragedy my family decided to do something to keep Max’s memory alive. Previously I had been helping to raise funds to install a new piece of playground equipment at Castleton Elementary School, where Max was enrolled to be a fifth grader this year. My family decided to do a basket raffle and donate the proceeds to the playground. I am writing this letter to publicly thank all the community members and businesses that helped me to make this a huge success. Also thank you to all of the parents, students and my friends who have helped me prepare for this wonderful event. A heartfelt thank you to my 80-year-old mother-In-law, Anna Thayer, for helping me to hold it together and for being my right hand throughout these last three months. Fair Haven Concert series a huge success Letter to the Editor: The 2017 Fair Haven Concerts in the Park summer series was once again a huge success. The concert committee would like to thank everyone who helped us provide the community with a wonderful line-up of family friendly entertainment. This includes the town of Fair Haven, our many wonderful sponsors, local businesses and friends who donate items for the drawings, newspapers who printed our weekly articles, concert goers, and also the many

folks who volunteered weekly to make the concert series an enjoyable experience. Our average attendance this year was more than 400 people including a large number of children. The Fair Haven Park is one of the loveliest venues in Vermont, and all of our bands enjoy their visit because of the wonderful reception they get from the audience. The 50/50 drawings help support the Dodge House in Rutland, a scholarship for a student from

Fair Haven Union High School who will major in music, and to support extra costs involved in holding the weekly concerts. Thank you to all those folks who generously supported the 50/50. The committee is busy planning the 2018 series, and would remind everyone that we hold a holiday tree lighting ceremony on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Picnic, quilting bee set for Sept. 30 By Ellen Ricks Get your apple pies ready and you’re quilting patterns lined up for the Grandma Moses Picnic and Quilting Bee for children and their families on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Children’s Sculpture Garden section of the Hadwen Woods and in the covered pavilion adjacent to the parking lot. The event is hosted by the volunteers at the George Aiken Wildflower Trail. This is going to be a fun, family friendly day of crafts, food and so many apples. The picnic and quilting bee is a celebration of the “Grandma Moses: American Modern” and the “1863 Stickle Quilt” both on view at the Bennington Museum. The inspiration came from “The Quilting Bee” painted by Anna Mary Robertson “Grandma”

Moses in 1950 when she was 90 years old. The volunteers will also be hosting the “Best Apple Pie in Bennington” contest with pies first being judged and then served as part of the picnic, along with free cider and apples. Pies should be delivered to the pavilion by 11 a.m. where they will be judged by Bennington town manager Stuart Hurd and Justine Scanion. There will be a great prize for the winner of the contest. But that’s not the core of the event. The quilting bee will be a fun learning experience for your little one. Fabric will be provided and children will be shown how to sew a small patchwork tote bag or a potholder, depending on their age and skill level. Very young children will “quilt” squares by pasting fabric pieces onto a col-

ored background. Natural materials will also be provided to those who what to make “natural quilt” squares from tree branches, twigs, bark, pine cones and other materials from the trail, set into log frames. Events like this real stitch the community together. From noon to 1 p.m. as you’re enjoying your picnic there will be entertainment provided by the Bennington Ukulele String Ensemble, led by Henry Simpatico. All participants and their families will be given a free pass to the museum for that day, allowing them to see both exhibitions as well as the newly opened Early Vermont Gallery. The museum is located at 75 Main Street (Route 9) in Bennington. For more information, contact the museum at 802-447-1571.

Items for soldiers, vets sought for stocking drive By Krystle S. Morey

Bardin’s Tire Service, an automotive repair shop on Quaker Street in Granville, closed in December 2016 after the Bardins moved to North Carolina. The contents of the building, which has not yet sold, will be auctioned off this Saturday.

Auction at Bardin’s Saturday By Krystle S. Morey The contents of Bardin’s Tire Service will be sold at an auction this Saturday. Located at 66 Quaker St., Bardin’s was a staple business in Granville for 64 years. The shop carried a full line of tire brands and types, offered automotive repair and service and diagnostics and had a fullyautomated car wash. Owner Mark Bardin closed the shop last December and moved to North Carolina, where his wife was offered a job. Bardin didn’t formally announce the shop’s closing.

He put up a note, “Bardin’s is closed. Thank you for 64 years of business. Retiring,” on the marquee out front of the shop the Friday before Christmas. “I have no interest in opening it back up,” Bardin said of the business and the reason for the auction. On Saturday, Sept. 23 starting at 10 a.m. items including signs, lifts, a generator, car wash equipment, filing cabinets, tools, tire displays and more will be auctioned off. “It will go until everything is gone … or until it’s over and they quit bidding,” Bardin said of the auction schedule.

“Anybody who wants something, they can come,” he added. Rick Rudd, of Lake St. Catherine, will be the auctioneer. There is no cost to enter the auction, but all items purchased must be paid for with cash or certified bank check. Bardin said that a buyer intends to purchase the property, but no sale was completed as of Monday. “A company has signed a letter of intent,” Bardin said, noting the new business would not be an automotive one. “I don’t know when. I am just kind of waiting,” he said.

Car enthusiasts who are planning to attend the Autumn Leaves Car Show at the Granville Little League Complex this weekend also have an opportunity to donate items to our troops. At the Sunday, Sept. 24 event, Lila Myer and a few other volunteers from Operation Adopt a Soldier will be collecting items to send to the troops. “We are collecting personal items for soldiers and snacks to put in the stockings,” said Myer, who has helped Operation Adopt a Soldier, a non-profit fundraiser, send care packages to the troops for a dozen years. Needed items include wipes, travel-size shampoo and soap, socks, deodorant, juice boxes, cookies, fruit cups, Ramen noodles and more. Fun items including playing cards, Rubik’s cubes and magazines are also being collected. Monetary donations and letters to the troops are also welcome. New this year, donated items will be packaged in homemade holiday stockings and sent to veterans and soldiers overseas. Myer teamed up with area sewing guilds including those from Whitehall, Argyle, Granville and Wells, Vermont

to hand make stockings to send the donations in. Karen Roberts, Sandra Ritchie, Bonnie Banta, Cathy Kilby, Linda Roche, Jean Meade and Sara and Natasha Cooper are among the knitters who have committed to help out. Because deployments are up to their highest levels in recent years, Myer said she and the local fundraisers adopted an additional 500 soldiers this year – that number about doubles the list from last year. Myer said the stuffing and sending the stockings to soldiers is a way to show support for them and “all of the sacrifices that they and their families make.” “It’s just a very humbling experience,” Myer said. “It’s all about giving our soldiers a smile… and to show that someone back home does care.” She added: “Whether their boots are on the ground or they are at sea, if we have their address, we see that they have a care package from Operation Adopt a Soldier. The stockings have to be filled and ready to ship by Thanksgiving, so items will only be collected until Nov. 1. For additional information, contact Myer at 518-642-1626 or visit operationadoptasoldier. org.

‘Miracle Man’ to speak about trip to Heaven Rev. Dean Braxton, author of “In Heaven—Experiencing the Throne of God” and “Deep Worship in Heaven” will speak at Granville Baptist Church, 23 Quaker St., on Tuesday, Sept. 26, starting at 6 p.m. As Braxton lay clinically dead on an operating table with doctors working to revive him for an hour and 45 Braxton minutes, he experienced going to Heaven. Since then, he has been sharing his knowledge of what Heaven is like all around the country. God revealed many things to Braxton during his time in Heaven, including a particular truth about the church in these last days. On Sept. 26, Dean will focus on this, as well as sharing his testimony and the importance of prayer and worship and unity among the people of God. Rev. Jim Peterson, pastor of Granville Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Whitehall, is especially interested in hearing what Braxton has to say about revival, he said. Peterson said he and members of his churches believe that God is doing a mighty

work in these last days and that the Holy Spirit will soon bring revival to this whole area and that God wants the local churches to be prepared and to be part of the process. Braxton and his wife Marilyn have been in ministry for over 17 years. Medical records show that Dean experienced cardiac arrest and was dead for an hour and 45 minutes. When he died, Dean says he found himself transported to Heaven. In Heaven, Braxton saw family members, angels that are assigned to us, prayers that continue to exist, Jesus Christ himself, etc. Today Braxton is called the “Miracle Man” after having been supernaturally healed of 29 serious medical conditions. There is no admission charge for the event at Granville Baptist Church, but a free-will love offering will be taken to bless Dean’s ministry. The sanctuary is wheelchair accessible, with plenty of parking for cars in back of the church. For more information, contact Peterson at 518-642-2245 or JCPeterson@roadrunner. com. To find out more about Braxton, go to deanbraxton. com.
