Chili Cook-off Saturday Get your tasting spoons at the ready folks, and break out your boldest of spices because Vermont’s oldest Chili cook-off is being held this Saturday, Sept. 30. That’s right folks, it’s the 28th annual Poultney Rotary Club Chili cook-off. The event will be held on Historic Main Street in Poultney, Vermont. The day begins with the annual 5K race. Runners and walkers alike kick off at 9 a.m. with pre-registration at 8 a.m. at Donna Johnson Physical Therapy. You can also register online at runsignup.com. Chili tasting will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until 1 p.m. There is no cost for those who are cooking, so break out your grandmother’s chili recipes, and you could win. No open fires are permitted for cooking. The Poultney Rotary Club suggests participants prepare approximately 11-15 gallons of chili for tasting and voting. All cooking will start at 8 a.m. Prizes will be awarded at 1 p.m. Remember, there are a few rules: Beer and alcohol is allowed as an ingredient, but road kill is not. Recipe stealing is legal and fair practice, so may the odds be ever in your favor.

Local churches, this weekend and next, will host ceremonies to bless animals. Each year, millions of pets are blessed by priests to celebrate the feast day (Oct. 4) of Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and the environment. St. Francis reportedly loved all of God’s creatures, treating them with kindness and compassion. Many ceremonies include a verbal bless-

Area hunters may be familiar with duck calls, turkey calls and geese calls; heck, they may have even used a moose, elk or wild pig call in their day. Well, they better prep their best Sasquatch call for this Saturday. Granville Pet owners can bring their furry friends to St. Mary’s Church to be blessed on Saturday, Oct. 7 at noon. “All are invited with their pets including chickens, goats, cats, cows … and elephants too,” said Father Joe Arockiasamy. “All animals.” Arockiasamy has blessed local animals at St. Mary’s for the past seven years. About 15 pets are blessed each year. “We encourage everybody to bring them, to experience the grace of God – not just people, animals too,” he said. Blessings, which which consist of a verbal prayer, reading from the scripture and sprinkling of holy water, will take place outside the church at 23 Bulkley Ave. There will be a group photo of owners and their pets after the ceremony. Church will bless animals at a ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 8. Father Lourduraja Simeone said attendees typically bring dogs and cats to be blessed. Larger animals, including horses, are also welcome, he said. “If they are not able to bring the animals, they can bring a picture of their animals … so they can still receive the blessings,” Simeone said. The brief ceremony will include a verbal prayer and holy water. The animals will be blessed together. “We will say a prayer for the animals and for the families who bring the animals, and we will bless them with the holy water,” Simeone said. As for why people should bring their animals to be blessed, Simeone said: “… because the Patron Saint of Animals, St. Francis, he was with animals and he was taking care, so the church planned to have a special day for the animals.” This is Simeone’s second year as priest of St. Raphael’s and his second year blessing animals in Poultney. Last year, 10 animals were blessed. St. Raphael’s Catholic

Wells This Sunday, Oct. 1, at 4 p.m., St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wells will observe the feast of St. Francis by blessing pets and animals. “St. Francis is a popular figure whose relevance has made him all the more significant now as we consider the importance of animals, food and farms in our lives,” Rev. William A. Davidson said. “We don’t know how our society will solve the problems of sustainable farming practices, the production of enough food to feed all, and the protection of wildlife, but the spirit of St. Francis offers inspiration.” Cider and donuts will be served, and all will be welcome to see the newly-redecorated interior of this historic church, which faces the village green in Wells. All are welcome at this observance. For more information, call Davidson at 518-499-1850 or Warden Timothy Lindgren Haley at 802-645-0679.

Movies on tap every Thursday in Wells For the past four years, every Thursday, the Lakes Region Film Society (LRFS), a Vermont non-profit member organization of Wells, Vermont, has been and is still showing the best of art, foreign, documentary and Oscarwinning/nominated movies as well as live performances of plays and concerts from the world stages. The screening venue is the Wells Town Offices’ large conference room located at 108 Vermont Rte. 30 and is entirely funded by yearly non-profit membership contributions. The room is equipped with a professional 12-foot by sevenfoot movie house screen and 5.1 surround sound. This art organization found its home at the Wells Town Offices thanks to the support of the Wells Select Board members and town community. The LRFs’ mission is to

enrich their community’s cultural life by showing these films to members drawn from the town of Wells and the surrounding area. It is a great experience to view a movie on a large screen and share the experience with other people but unless one is viewing the movie privately inside one’s home, a Public Performance License is required in order to avoid copyright infringement. The LRFS must acquire an annual license from the Motion Picture Licensing Corporation (MPLC), which grants permission to legally obtain and show films without publicly advertising titles, dates and times of the showings. Since an MPLC license is intended for non-commercial use, it permits advertisement of the scheduled films to be shown only at the film venue – in this case the Wells town

The sixth annual Model Railroad Show and Swap Meet is this Saturday at the College of St. Joseph in Rutland.

Model railroad show on tap this Saturday By Matthew Saari Several model trains will be pulling into the College of St. Joseph this Saturday as a part of the sixth annual Model Railroad Show and Swap Meet, courtesy of the Rutland Railway Association. The College of St. Joseph is located at 71 Clemont Rd., Rutland. The meet is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and will run until 3 p.m. Cost for admittance is $5 while children 12 and under are admitted free of charge. Numerous vendors will be on hand selling model railroad kits, models, scenery and buildings in addition to swapping models, railroad collectibles, books, DVDs and more. If you have a model or piece of railroad memorabilia, this is the place to find a buyer. John Schaub, the association’s museum development manager, said that several hundred people attend each year. “Sometimes on a good weekend…they can reach up to 500 or more,” he said. Schaub added that this year several large-scale models will be available for viewing, brought from Massachusetts and New Hampshire. “It’s a unique ‘Mom and Pop’ layout these people bring from New Hampshire,” he said. Although years prior the model railroad hobby was in decline, Schaub said that interest in the hobby has grown once more.

“You see parents bringing their kids and they say ‘I’m trying to get them away from the TV or computer,’” Schaub said. “It’s nice to see a resurgence in the hobby.” If you’re new to the hobby, the swap meet is a great way to get introduced to the hobby, learn about the history of local railroads and meet some fine folks. “I’m an advocate…This hobby will bring you into a lot of skills you don’t get sitting in front of the computer,” he said. “It’s just a place for you to end up walking in and making a lot of friends.” The Rutland Railway Association is headquartered at the Center Rutland depot located on Depot Lane. The depot houses the museum of the association as well as their HO and N-scale model railroad layouts. The RRA is a public organization for railroad buffs and anyone of all ages with an interest in history, specifically the former Rutland Railroad, Delaware & Hudson Whitehall branch, Clarendon & Pittsford and predecessor lines. The organization meets every Thursday, except on holidays. Monthly business meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month beginning at 7 p.m. till 9 p.m. at the depot. For more information about the swap meet of how to become a member, find them on Facebook or call 802-774-8412.

A tender, moving play about a pioneer woman and her daughters, Quilters skillfully blends a series of interrelated scenes into a memorable musical. Each scene is introduced by a quilt square or “block” symbolic of life’s passages. During each “block”, the actresses skillfully transform into many different characters whose stories depict the lot of women on the prairie. Combining music, dance and drama, Quilters captures both the harsh challenges and the abiding rewards of frontier life with vivid dramatic intensity. The first of six performances will be presented on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. in the library at the College of St. Joseph in Rutland. Quilters is being presented by a consortium of Rutland area women who have been involved in all aspects of local school and/or community theater for decades.

Director Jennifer Bagley and Music Director Rita Lane have assembled a cast of talented actresses with beautiful voices including: Marsha Cassel, Melissa Chesnut-Tangerman, Julia Doiron, Mikki Lane, Maureen Sullivan, and Tegan Waite. Quilters is a play that has long been a passion of theirs, not only because some are quilters themselves, but because it tells the universal story of the struggle of pioneer women on the frontier. And, although women may no longer be on the frontier, many still face daily challenges of poverty, abuse, and discrimination. All profits will be donated to the Rutland County Women’s Network & Shelter. Women need to come together now more than ever. Admission to all the performances will be by free will offering.

Light snacks and refreshments will also be provided, and students and school officials will be on hand to answer questions. “We felt there needed to be a better way of communicating between the Town of Poultney and the Green Mountain College Campus,” said Thompson.

“We’re just trying to make it easier for the community to feel welcome and know what is available for them,” Thompson said. The number of community members who use the college’s facilities is limited, but Thompson said hosting tours and other events to inform the community about the resources available will help boost that number. She said the next resource tour will likely be next spring. Green Mountain College is located at 1 Brennan Circle in Poultney, Vermont. Tour attendees should meet in the lobby of the Withey Student Center on campus. In an effort to fuel the relationship between itself and the Poultney community, Green Mountain College will offer a walking tour to show off oncampus resources available to community members. The college’s Community Resource Tour, set for Thursday, Oct. 5 from noon to 1:15 p.m., is designed to advance the opportunities within the town of Poultney through available opportunities for town members to use Green Mountain College as a resource, school officials said. “This is an initiative to advance the Town of Poultney, and we’d love for [community members] to come participate and see what the campus is all about, because you’re welcomed here,” said Lara Thompson, Green Mountain College’s community service and outreach coordinator. Thompson said the college is always looking for ways to advance its relationship with the community. “I think it’s important to be mindful of the community that we’re in,” she said. “One of the values that we have here at the college is generosity and we really want to extend that to the local community.” The resource tour event includes a packet of information and a guided tour of cam-

Scarecrows sought for inaugural decorating contest By Krystle S. Morey He sits atop his post with tattered overalls and a checked button shirt. His eyes are still and there’s straw peeking out from beneath his hat. This is just one description of a scarecrow. The Slate Quarry Park Group is looking for Lakes Region residents to create a scarecrow to be displayed in its inaugural scarecrow decorating contest. Because this is the first year the scarecrow contest has been held, the rules are pretty loose. “It’s producing whatever you want to produce that looks something like a scarecrow,” said organizer Marcia Angermann, “…whatever people want to create. We hope

they will be creative.” Participants will install their scarecrows in Slate Quarry Park in Poultney on Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to noon. They’ll remain on display through Oct. 28 at noon, when winners will be announced. A panel of judges will rate the scarecrows and award the top three creators with cash prizes. First place receives $100, second wins $50 and

third gets $25. Participants will take their scarecrows home at the conclusion of the contest. “We’re hoping that families and businesses will get involved,” Angermann said. Who wins is up to the judges, but Angermann said she thinks originality and creativity will be favorable. Angermann got the idea to host a scarecrow contest from when she was living in Pennsylvania, where they had a similar event. “It was a lot of fun,” she said. “A lot of people got involved in it.”

Group came out of the Poultney 2020 initiative, which examines what the town will look like by the year 2020 and what residents feel it needs. “A small park on the main street was one thing that came out of that,” said Angermann, who has been a part of the group for a couple of years. “One of the ideas for this park is that it will bring the community together.” Stone Valley Arts, a nonprofit community arts organization, also came out of Poultney 2020. Those interested in submitting a scarecrow should send their name, email, title of their entry and $25 donation to the Slate Quarry Park Group at PO Box 27, Poultney, VT 05764 by the Oct. 14 deadline. For more information, contact Angermann at marciaangermann@gmail.com.

“There were a lot of original ideas that I saw at the scarecrow contest in Pennsylvania,” Angermann said. The idea behind hosting a contest locally was to give people a glimpse of what the Slate Quarry Park can be and what it can do for a small community like Poultney. “We hope it will just be fun for the town … and that maybe it will get more people involved,” Angermann said. Slate Quarry Park Group has been trying to purchase the land where the park is located, 76 Main St. in Poultney, for a couple of years, Angermann said. The land is currently owned by an auto parts store in Poultney. “We’re halfway there,” she said. Payments for the property and landscaping designs for the pocket park are still developing. Simple ways to alleviate back pain Few health problems are as prevalent as back pain. The American Chiropractic Association says that 50 percent of working Americans admit to having back pain symptoms each year. Bone and Joint Health Canada states that as much as 80 percent of people experience back pain at least once in their lifetime. Back pain can be so significant that it results in a loss of function that impedes daily activities. In fact, according to the 2015 Global Burden of Disease report, back pain is the single leading cause of disability in most countries. Back pain can be a complex issue. According to data complied by TheGoodBody.com, only one in 10 people learns the primary cause of their pain. ThatÕs because many things, including muscle sprains or joint irritation, can contribute to back pain. Other factors that may contribute to back pain include arthritis, stress, obesity, or diseases of the internal organs. Each of these issues can make it challenging to uncover the culprit behind back pain.

Ruling out degenerative diseases can be a first step in treating back pain. Doctors also may ask their patients about their level of physical activity. Doctors may want to know if patients suffering back pain engage in activities involving repetitive movements to determine if their back pain can be traced to these activities. Some common factors contribute to back pain, and addressing these issues may bring about relief.

n Strengthen core muscles. Poor muscle tone, especially in the back and abdominal muscles, may result in back pain. Engaging in activities that strengthen the core can help strengthen the area, offering more support to the back. A doctor, physical therapist or fitness instructor may guide you in exercises, such as planks or abdominal crunches, that can strengthen the core. n Get up and move. A seden-

tary lifestyle can be a major contributor to back pain. Nearly half of Americans who experience back pain are desk workers who spend the majority of their time sitting, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Qi Spine, a clinic that gathered data from 1,300 people who said they deal with spine-related pain, found that half the participants with sedentary jobs had lower back pain. Standing, moving around and taking breaks from the desk can help alleviate pain. n Lose weight. The spine is vulnerable to effects of obesity. Extra weight in the abdomen may pull the pelvis forward and strain the lower back, states the American Obesity Association. Losing weight can reduce that strain on the lower back, thereby reducing pain. Back pain is a frequent complaint and compels many people to visit their doctors. Exercise, maintaining a healthy weight and strengthening core muscles can go a long way toward keeping the back healthy and pain-free.

Sports are the leading cause of youth eye injuries Active children have the advantage of being in good physical shape and keeping their weight in check. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say one in five children are considered overweight or obese, but being engaged in a sport or other activity promotes exercise, which can be a good thing for both physical and mental health. Although playing sports is beneficial for various reasons, there are some inherent risks to participating in them as well. Physical injuries, such as concussions and broken bones, can result from participating in sports. But perhaps surprisingly, eye injuries are quite common among young athletes. Such injuries often do not get the attention with regard to prevention that statistics suggest they warrant. According to the National Eye Institute, eye injuries are the leading cause of blindness in children in America. Many eye injuries among school-aged children are attributed to

sports. A study published in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology that was based on research from Johns Hopkins University, Harvard and other institutions found about 30,000 sports-related eye injuries are treated each year at emergency rooms participating in the Nationwide Emergency Department sample, which compiles information about millions of emergency room visits to more than 900 hospitals around the country. Data indicates that a large majority of these injuries occurred in people younger than 18, and a sizable number in children younger than 10. The situation is similar in

Canada. “We believe that sports eye injuries are the largest cause of vision loss in children, said Keith Gordon, vice-president of research at CNIB, a Torontobased nonprofit that provides support services for the visually impaired. The NEI states that baseball is the sport responsible for the greatest number of eye injuries in children age 14 and younger. Basketball has the highest number of eye injuries for players between the ages of 15 and 24. Other sports that account for a high rate of eye injuries include softball, soccer and

cycling. Players, parents and coaches must realize that, according to the Coalition to Prevent Sports Eye Injuries, 90 percent of sports-related eye injuries can be avoided with the use of protective eyewear. Protective eyewear is often made of strong polycarbonate, which is 10 times more impact-resistant than other plastics. All children who play sports should wear protective eyewear, warn sports medicine experts. However, currently many youth sports leagues do not require the use of such protection, making it the responsibility of parents and coaches to enforce this important safety protocol. Protecting eyes when playing sports is of paramount importance for athletes of all ages. More information about sports-related activities and protective eyewear is available at Vision Council of America (www.thevisioncouncil.org) and Prevent Blindness America (www. preventblindness.org).

Women and health According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each week women who are 65 years or older, are generally fit and have no limiting health conditions should combine at least two days of muscle-strengthening exercises with at least two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity. Women capable of more strenuous cardiovascular activity can substitute one hour and 15 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity with their two and a half hours per week of more moder-

ate-intensity exercise. The CDC notes that distinguishing between moderateintensity exercise and vigorous-intensity exercise is pretty simple. Women can use a 10-point scale in which sitting is zero and working as hard as is physically possible is 10. Moderate-intensity aerobic activity will make women breathe harder and elevate their heart rates, but should not make them feel completely drained at the end of a workout. These

Strategies to keep weight off once it's gone Losing weight requires hard work and determination. Oftentimes, men and women hoping to lose weight must commit to healthier lifestyles than the ones theyÕve grown accustomed to. That can be a big adjustment, and itÕs important that men and women about to embark on their weight loss journeys recognize that keeping lost weight off can sometimes be as challenging as losing the weight. Some people are inspired to lose weight before their weddings, while oth-

ers may want to shed some pounds before beach season. While thereÕs no wrong reason for people who are overweight or obese to lose weight, people who tie their weight loss efforts to something as temporary as beach season may overlook the long-term benefits of maintaining healthy weights, unknowingly increasing their risk of putting weight back on after reaching their short-term goals. According to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, maintaining a

healthy weight lowers a personÕs risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, and various cancers. Maintaining weight loss can be an uphill battle, but men and women can employ various strategies to ensure the weight they lose stays lost for years to come.

ins gradually become something to look forward to as pounds start to drop off. Routinely weigh yourself even after reaching your weight loss goals, as the scale can be just as motivational for people trying to maintain healthy weights as it is for people trying to lose weight.

n Continue your weigh-ins. Weighins may seem like the enemy as men and women make their initial efforts toward losing weight. However, weigh-

Weight Continued from page 11 and exercise. That's a great weight loss strategy, and it's also a great way to maintain a healthy weight. Recognize that weight wonÕt stay off if you exercise but don't eat right. Rather, maintaining a healthy weight over the long haul requires both a healthy diet and regular exercise. n Eat slowly. While it might not work for everyone, eating slowly has been linked to lower calorie consumption. A study from researchers at Texas Christian University found that participants who were instructed to take small

bites, chew thoroughly and pause and put their spoons down between bites consumed, on average, 88 fewer calories per meal than participants who were told to take large bites, chew quickly and continue eating without putting their spoons down. Study participants who were overweight, however, ate just 58 fewer calories on average. n Document your efforts. Whether it's in a journal, on a blog or by emailing a loved one, documenting your efforts to maintain a healthy weight may provide the motivation you need to stay on course. Maintaining a healthy weight after substantial weight loss is a challenge that men and women can overcome by staying as vigilant in their efforts to keep weight off as they were while working to lose weight.

siderably and get women breathing hard enough that they will be unable to say more than a few words without pausing to catch their breath. No two women are the same and age must be considered when developing a healthy exercise regimen, but brisk walking may qualify as moderate-intensity aerobic activity while jogging or running would be considered a vigorous-intensity activity.

Breast cancer research fundraising stamps available at local post offices As October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Postal Service is reminding customers that they can help fund Breast Cancer research by purchasing the Breast Cancer Research Stamp, a semi-postal stamp issued to help raise funds for breast cancer research. Available year-round, the 60-cent self-adhesive stamps are sold in sheets of 20. Each stamp has a postage value equivalent to the First-Class Mail oneounce stamped letter price in effect at the time of purchase. The stamps are available at Post Offices nationwide, online at usps.com and by phone at 1-800STAMP-24. The amount the Postal Service contributes to Breast Cancer research is determined

by the difference between the First-Class rate in effect at the time of purchase and the 60-cent purchase price, minus a nominal amount to offset costs incurred by the Postal Service. The distribution of the Postal Service contribution is specified by law, with 70 percent given to the National Institutes of Health and the remainder to the Medical Research Program at the Department of Defense. As of Sept. 2016, the sale of more than one billion stamps since its 1998 inception has raised more than $83 million for breast cancer research. The Breast Cancer Research Stamp was issued at the White House on July 29, 1998. It was the first semi-postal stamp in U.S. history. In 1997, Congress

authorized the first semi-postal stamp for the specific purpose of raising funds from the American public to assist in finding a cure for breast cancer. In 2015, President Obama signed Public Law No. 114-99 that extended the sale of the Breast Cancer Research Stamp through Dec. 31, 2019. Designed by Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Maryland, the stamp features the phrases, “Fund the Fight” and Find a Cure” and an illustration of a mythical “goddess of the hunt” by Whitney Sherman of Baltimore, Maryland. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage products and services to fund its operations.

Shoppers get ready for Poultney Town-wide Sale

Twig Remembers Chuck Shenkel When Chuck first came to town (Poultney), he took on the job of town manager. A nice, soft-spoken gent, he was very well respected and always

ready to dig in. He was a regular at Williams Hardware by the time I arrived there. Always very polite and sure

of himself, he was always a pleasure to wait on and he loved a good laugh. God bless Chuck Shenkel.

“Norma Fish” There was a time when my mom had some personal troubles. Well, all through those

times her neighbor and dear friend “Normie” was always there for her.

Thank you so much. God bless Norma Fish.

Eileen Brough You want a combination of sweet lady and beautiful lady – that’s Eileen. It doesn’t get any better than that. Back in the late 60’s, Ronnie Doane and I took jobs as construction workers on an addition to the Rutland post office. There we were working with some of the roughest characters in Rutland. After two weeks we fit right in with the best of them.

The federal money was great – big paychecks allowed us to go to “The Tables” Restaurant for steak dinners. The boys, John and Tommy, would be playing catch on the big front lawn. The father, John, was the bartender. He’d be busy jabbering away as he puffed away on his big cigar. Eileen and the girls were the waitresses, the older girl Susie was just out of high school and

pretty much into the money end and didn’t seem to wanna be there. One night I complained to Eileen and from then on we had the younger sister Madelaine. What a difference as she had the looks, the charm and the great personality of her mom. Now when Madelaine and Eileen waited on you, it was like being in Heaven. God bless Eileen Brough.

Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to participate in the annual Poultney Town Wide Yard Sale Day. The autumn 2017 season event will be on Saturday, Oct. 14 rain or shine. The sales begin at 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. Shoppers will see that crafters, food makers, farmers, restaurant owners, non-profits, school groups, civic groups and of course anyone with yard sale items are all welcome. A few vendor spaces still remain – the Chamber has room for nearly 140 spaces. The vendor spaces along historic Main Street are each $20. The size of the space is 15 feet wide and the street-side curb to the sidewalk in depth. The clock is ticking, don’t delay and contact the Chamber

soon to reserve your site. Be sure to visit Poultney on Oct. 14 for the event. For an application for Town Wide Yard Sale day vendor space and/or questions, the Chamber’s contact for this event is Mary Kathryn Helm at maryhelm1@yahoo.com or call her at 802-287-1120, Simply Clean, West Haven, Vermont. Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce, Inc. is a non-profit organization of businesses whose mission is to work together to strengthen Poultney’s economic community. For more information about Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce, including how to become a Chamber member, call the Chamber office at 802287-2010 or visit its website www.poultneyvt.com.

Hospice training offered The Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice of the Southwest Region is providing training for those interested in becoming hospice volunteers beginning on Thursday, Oct. 19 from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. The four-week session runs every Thursday and Saturday, with Saturday sessions from 9 a.m. – noon. Training will conclude on Saturday, Nov. 11. The training course will be held at the Rutland office of the VNA & Hospice of the Southwest Region on 7 Albert Cree Dr. in Rutland. Pre-registration is required. Once training is complete, assignments and schedules are tailored to the volunteer’s geographic and time commitment preferences. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and need to pass a background check. No previous hospice and health care experience is required. Hospice volunteers provide comfort and support to patients facing terminal illness, as well as respite and support to their fami-

lies. Volunteer training covers the basic principles of hospice, understanding the special needs of patients and their families, effective communication, patient care, pain and symptom management, spiritual care giving, and understanding grief and loss. Hospice volunteers are trained in listening skills, family dynamics and in using appropriate words to comfort patients and their loved ones at the end of life. After completing the class, volunteers can provide respite for caregivers, offer companionship for the patient, run errands and help families and patients in many meaningful ways. Community members are encouraged to join the VNA’s supportive and rewarding Hospice volunteer program where they can contribute their unique interests, skills, and talents. For more information or to enroll call Campbell at 802-7701683 or email him at john.campbell@vnahsr.org.

Who let the dogs out? By Ellen Ricks “If your dog is tired of Keeping up with the Kardashians, give this a try,” said Lee Rebalko, founder and creator of Doggie Fun Zone, which he said practically guarantees can get even the laziest of pooches moving. You and your furry friend can test his invention from 10 a.m. this Saturday till 4 p.m. Sunday at the Orvis Doggie Fun Festival at the Orvis facility in Manchester, Vermont. Rebalko describes the Doggie Fun Zone, the main event of this free festival, as something like a video game. Your pup will run through an obstacle course as it tries to catch an elusive lure through a fully enclosed “Grand Prix style” raceway. Even if your dog is a couch potato, it will instinctively go after twitching motion, no training needed. “It’s a game for both dogs and humans,” Rebalko said. “Its instant gratification and a real world video game. It’s fun for

the dogs because get to run around and fun to watch the dogs go through the course.” Rebalko knows a thing or two about what’s fun, having come from three generations in the entertainment business. All dogs are able to play at the Doggie Fun Spot, from Doxies to Boxers, it’s completely safe. Seeing those dogs jump, run and almost fly through the air makes this the coolest dog event around. Who let the dogs out? Rebalko said of Orvis, which is hosting the event: “It’s a nice thing for them to do for the community.” While Rebalko will have sport cameras at the event to take you dog’s picture in action, free of charge, he said “bring your camera, because no one would believe this.” The Orvis Doggie Fun Festival will be held at the Orvis Outfitter’s Store, located on 4180 Main Street in Manchester.
