The Benson Volunteer Fire Department’s scariest event of the year is returning to town this weekend. The department will host its biggest fundraiser of the year – the annual Haunted Hayride – beginning at 7 p.m, on Friday, Oct. 6 and Saturday, Oct. 7. More than 1,500 eager brave souls line up each year for a 45-minute-long ride through dozens of eerie sites in and around the town. Monsters, witches, zombies, ghosts – they’re all part of this frightfully entertaining event.
The trip begins at the Benson Town Hall, 2760 Stage Road, where freight seekers will take an adventure down an “abandoned” dirt road full of bump, scares and laughs. Tickets purchased at the ticket booth are $7.50 and can be purchased from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Advance reserve tickets, for individual seats or an entire wagon (30 seats), leaving at the time of your choice, is $10 and may be purchased by emailing bensonhayride@gmail.com. Just like the department itself, this

The Pember Library and Museum and the Slate Valley Museum are teaming up to host their third annual Monster party and zombie walk. The spooky First Friday events are set for Oct. 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. at both museums. As part of the museums’ October First Friday event, community members are invited to dress up in ghoulish garb and other crazy costumes and parade down Main Street. After that, a variety of Halloween tricks and treats will spook attendees at both museums. At the Pember, some treats like “fingr” sandwiches, jelly eyeballs, bloody punch and other delicacies of the undead will be available. Make-up will also be provided to help everyone look their scariest. “We also have makeup we do for anyone who wants it, and makeup stations around the room for those who want to do it themselves,” said Gigi “Sparkle Head G” Zeitler, Pember field commander. “Zombies are the future. We know you are out there and we welcome you!” said Sparkle Head G. “This is your night and we are honored to

Skene Manor gets spooked It’s Halloween time, time for candy apples, fall leaves, and horror movies. But wait, was that a chill in the air, or was it something…spooky? If you’re a fan of the weird, the supernatural, the otherworldly, or just plain watched way to much Scooby Doo growing up, you’re not going to want to miss the South Glens Falls Paranormal Society investigate the Skene Manor on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 6 to 10 p.m. The South Glens Falls Paranormal Society was established by investigator Steven Brodt in 2010 along with a friend and his mother. Over the past seven years they have grown to 10 members and have traveled from New York to Vermont Pennsylvania, Ohio and Kentucky. They have investigated well-known locations such as Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Kentucky to Rolling Hills Asylum in upstate New York. They also do more than 20 lesser-known, but highly active, local locations. “I’ve been to over 100 investigations and have seen it all, shadows, voices, and gotten scratches,” said Brodt. The Skene Manor, one of Whitehall’s most historical landmarks, built in 1874, is known to be active instigation. Over the past years Brodt has noticed a lot of paranormal activity coming from the house on the hill. “People have seen shadow figures walking by when no one
was there, disembodied voices, footsteps,” said Brodt. The Oct. 7 public investigation is the only one scheduled at Skene Manor this year, and you don’t want to miss out. The night starts off with a presentation and a quick overview of the equipment you will be using throughout the evening. Doors will open at 6:05 p.m. so arrive no later than 6:20 p.m. Following the presentation you will be split into two groups and led on an investigation of the historic home with full access to all the floors of the mansion. The investigation will last from 7 to 10 p.m. when the night will end with any audio evidence that may have been captured during the first two hours of investigating. Don’t be disappointed if it nothing happens. “It’s not like the TV shows. We don’t say a location is haunted until we have proof to back it up. Sometimes we go to a place four times and get nothing and then on the fifth time we get something. We don’t think something happens until it does,” said Brodt. Tickets for the Skene Manor investigation are $30 and can be purchased at the South Glens Falls Paranormal Society website at http://www.sgfparanormalsociety.com/. The Skene Manor is located on 8 Potter Terrance in Whitehall. For more information, visit the Society website or their Facebook Page.
Zombie Continued from front page serve you.” The big thrill of the night will be the Zombie walk that kicks off at the Pember museum at 8 p.m. Friday. Everyone will walk, or limp, for the Zombie Walk from the Pember on Main Street, down River
Scarecrow Continued from front page This is just one description of a scarecrow. The Slate Quarry Park Group is looking for Lakes Region residents to create a scarecrow to be displayed in its inaugural scarecrow decorating contest. Because this is the first year the scarecrow contest has been held, the rules are pretty loose. “It’s producing whatever you want to produce that looks something like a scarecrow,” said organizer Marcia Angermann, “…whatever people want to create. We hope they will be creative.” Participants will install their scarecrows in Slate Quarry Park in Poultney on Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to noon. They’ll remain on display through Oct. 28 at noon, when winners will be announced. A panel of judges will rate the scarecrows and award the top three creators with cash prizes. First place receives $100, second wins $50 and third gets $25. Participants will take
executive director and Zombie Queen. “We’re aiming for a million Zombies to emerge this year.” Organizers say it will be a night to die for. The Pember Library and Museum of Natural History is located at 33 West Main Street and the Slate Valley Museum is located at 17 Water Street. For more information send an owl or call 518-642-1515.
their scarecrows home at the conclusion of the contest. “We’re hoping that families and businesses will get involved,” Angermann said. Who wins is up to the judges, but Angermann said she thinks originality and creativity will be favorable. Angermann got the idea to host a scarecrow contest from when she was living in Pennsylvania, where they had a similar event. “It was a lot of fun,” she said. “A lot of people got involved in it.” “There were a lot of original ideas that I saw at the scarecrow contest in Pennsylvania,” Angermann said. The idea behind hosting a contest locally was to give people a glimpse of what the Slate Quarry Park can be and what it can do for a small community like Poultney. “We hope it will just be fun for the town … and that maybe it will get more people involved,” Angermann said. Slate Quarry Park Group has been trying to purchase the land where the park is located, 76 Main St. in Poultney, for a couple of years, Angermann
said. The land is currently owned by an auto parts store in Poultney. “We’re halfway there,” she said. Payments for the property and landscaping designs for the pocket park are still developing. The Slate Quarry Park Group came out of the Poultney 2020 initiative, which examines what the town will look like by the year 2020 and what residents feel it needs. “A small park on the main street was one thing that came out of that,” said Angermann, who has been a part of the group for a couple of years. “One of the ideas for this park is that it will bring the community together.” Stone Valley Arts, a nonprofit community arts organization, also came out of Poultney 2020. Those interested in submitting a scarecrow should send their name, email, title of their entry and $25 donation to the Slate Quarry Park Group at PO Box 27, Poultney, VT 05764 by the Oct. 14 deadline. For more information, contact Angermann at marciaangermann@gmail.com.
Churches to bless animals this weekend By Krystle S. Morey Local churches will host ceremonies to bless animals this Saturday and Sunday. Each year, millions of pets are blessed by priests to celebrate the feast day (Oct. 4) of Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and the environment. St. Francis reportedly loved all of God’s creatures, treating them with kindness and compassion. Many ceremonies include a verbal blessing and administering of holy water. Animals from dogs to birds and horses to rabbits are blessed each year. Here’s a look at a few churches that will host “Blessing of the Animals” ceremonies:

There will be Halloween art, special music, treats, creepy décor that other surprises that will make you scream. “Last year’s Zombie Walk was a tremendous hit, with over 500 people turning out,” said Krista Rupe, slate museum

pets including chickens, goats, cats, cows … and elephants too,” said Father Joe Arockiasamy. “All animals.” Arockiasamy has blessed local animals at St. Mary’s for the past seven years. About 15 pets are blessed each year. “We encourage everybody to bring them, to experience the grace of God – not just people, animals too,” he said. Blessings, which which consist of a verbal prayer, reading from the scripture and sprinkling of holy water, will take place outside the church at 23 Bulkley Ave. There will be a group photo of owners and their pets after the ceremony. Call St. Mary’s at 518-6421262 for additional information.
Poultney St. Raphael’s Catholic Church will bless animals at a ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 8. Father Lourduraja Simeone said attendees typically bring dogs and cats to be blessed. Larger animals, including horses, are also welcome, he said. “If they are not able to bring

the animals, they can bring a picture of their animals … so they can still receive the blessings,” Simeone said. The brief ceremony will include a verbal prayer and holy water. The animals will be blessed together. “We will say a prayer for the animals and for the families who bring the animals, and we will bless them with the holy water,” Simeone said. As for why people should bring their animals to be blessed, Simeone said: “… because the Patron Saint of Animals, St. Francis, he was with animals and he was taking care, so the church planned to have a special day for the animals.” This is Simeone’s second year as priest of St. Raphael’s and his second year blessing animals in Poultney. Last year, 10 animals were blessed. St. Raphael’s Catholic Church, which has about 200 parishioners, is located at 21 E Main St. in Poultney, Vermont. For more information, call 802287-5703.

Poultney to host town-wide sale next weekend By Matthew Saari Residents and businesses in Poultney, Vermont are gearing up for their annual town-wide sale event on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. The event, which is Poultney’s fall version of the town’s spring yard-sale event, is a perennial favorite, ranking among the most popular and wellattended events of the year right next to the Poultney Rotary Club’s Chili CookOff. “It’s very well-attended,” said organizer Mary Helm. “The streets are packed full of people every spring and fall.”
front lawns throughout the Poultney community, the majority of the action, the hub so to speak, will be Main Street. Every year, the Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce makes available spots on Main Street that a business or individual can purchase for $20 and be in the thick of the sale. Each spot is 15-feet wide and has a depth extending from the street to the sidewalk. Helm said that there is no limit to the number of spaces available on Main Street. Each year, the Chamber sees enough participation to fill half of Main Street. Helm’s long-term goal is to completely fill the street with vendors. “There are always spaces available,”
Buyers and sellers range from far and wide. Helm said people are drawn to the event from all over Vermont and eastern New York. Perhaps some of the curb appeal stems from the fact that the event is not just another town-wide yard sale - it’s a unique amalgam of yard sale, farmer’s market and everything in between. “Everyone and anyone is welcome to set up,” Helm said. Crafters, food vendors, maple sugar producers, carpenters, farmers, store owners and non-profits all partake and hawk their wares throughout Poultney. Although businesses and residents will offer a bevy of savings in their

Learn about the events on Long Island and New York City, and British Gen. William Howe’s effort to capture Philadelphia. Did these factors lead to the failure of Burgoyne’s plan to split off New England from the rest of

The Castleton American Legion and The Sunshine Fund will co-sponsor ARC Rutland Area’s Halloween Dance on Sunday, Oct. 22, from 1-4 p.m. at the Castleton American Legion. There will be dancing and music in celebration of Halloween for people with developmental disabilities, their families and friends. Join the fun, see old acquaintances or meet new friends. Getting out and socializing is one of the best medicines for a happy and healthy life. Dances are for people with developmental disabilities, and
all interested, to meet, chat, and have community. The hope is that these events help this community to create larger circles of support, find out more about the DD services and to make true connections. All ages are welcome to attend the dance event, whether dancing or making those neededfriendships, all have a good time. The general public is invited to come and dance, it is always good to have new partners. For more information call ARC Rutland Area, an organization serving citizens with developmental disabilities.
State programs are limited and some people with DD aren’t even eligible for services. The ARC programs are for anyone interested in DD, they offer activities when no others are available or in addition to what someone is already receiving. Without these dance opportunities, the membership would not have many chances to learn and practice socializing in the community. The Rutland area ARC can be reached at 802-775-1370 or by email at info@ ARCRutlandArea.org, or you can check out their webpage at ARCRutlandArea.org.
Spooky things to be explored at Dorset Library By Ellen Ricks Think you’re the long-lost member of the Ghostbuster team? Do you watch every TV show, movie and documentary about paranormal activity? Have you sworn to anyone who would listen that you have seen something in the middle of the night that just didn’t seem right? If so, visit the Dorset Library on Friday, Oct. 13 from 7 to 10 p.m. for an evening of ghost hunting with paranormal investigator Becky Shott. Shott, director of the Dorset library, came up with this event a year ago when she had heard about some odd things about the library. “I started working here three years ago and I heard things about books coming off the shelves, people reported seeing things.” Shott decided to call in her sister Becky, a professional paranormal investigator, to take a look. Becky Shott has been in the ghost business professionally for more than 20
years, but Eric fondly remembers her childhood in Ohio where they would investigate old, historic houses. Becky Shott has been using her abilities to console those in need as well as present the proper understanding of ghosts and haunting. The event will start with an introduction by Becky to the equipment and ghosting, plus the opportunity to make your own dowsing to detect the presents of ghosts. Guests are more than welcome to bring their own equipment, or borrow the library’s to conduct your personal investigation. At the end of the evening, everyone will discuss their findings and ask Becky questions. On Oct. 14 any evidence captured will be shared with the library and included with Becky’s presentation “Ghosts
and Odd Things I’ve Seen” at the Dorset Village Library at 6 p.m. Also making an appearance on Oct. 14 isn’t a ghost by author J.W. Ocker who will be giving a presentation on Macabre Vermont. He has spent the last nine years traveling New England and writing about the weird, spooky things he finds. Erica’s favorite thing about the ghost hunts at Dorset? “It’s fun to see how many people are interested in this and how seriously they take it.” The ghost hunting experience at the Dorset Library is for adults only and if you’re interested in attending the event, call the library at 802-8675774 to register. If you have questions or would like more information, visit the library’s webpage at doresetvillagelibrary.org or email dorsetvillagelibrary@gmail.com. The Dorset Village Library is located on the Green at Church Street and Route 30 in Dorset.

Statewide Fall open studio next weekend Combine fall foliage viewing and harvest activities with purchases from local artists across Vermont. Bright yellow signs compete with oranges and reds of October along Vermont’s roads enticing visitors to the studios of craftspeople and fine artists across Vermont during the 2017 Fall Open Studio Tour over October 14 & 15. The Vermont Crafts Council is coordinating their event with American Craft Week, a national celebration of craftwork, taking place from October 6 through October 15. Open Studio Weekend is a statewide celebration of the visual arts and creative process, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to meet a wide
variety of local artists and craftspeople in their studios, and purchase high quality, hand made artwork. The self-guided Open Studio tour features the work of glassblowers, jewelers, printmakers, potters, furniture makers, weavers, ironworkers, painters, sculptors, quilt makers and wood carvers. Many participating galleries will host gallery talks and feature special exhibits in conjunction with this event. The Vermont Crafts Council publishes a free map with directions to participating sites. The Fall Open Studio Map is available throughout the state at Tourist Information Centers, galleries and studios. It will also available on the
VCC website starting mid August 2017, http://www.vermontcrafts.com/OSW/fallmaps-directions.html or by calling 802-223-3380. The Vermont Crafts Council launched Open Studio Weekend in 1993 to increase the visibility of artists and craftspeople in Vermont and to foster an appreciation for the creative process and the role that artists and craftspeople play in the vitality of Vermont’s communities. The Vermont Crafts Council is a non-profit organization serving the Vermont visual arts community. Open Studio Weekend is supported by the Vermont Arts Council and by The Point radio station.

Lorraine Frazier It was not long after her passing that I ran into my good friend and classmate John Frazier at Shaw’s. As we spoke, he told me that he had just lost his best friend and the love of his life.
I told him that he needs time to grieve but then he had to gather himself and carry on as his wife would want him to. May God be with you Lorraine Frazier.

Haynes House Trek for Hope races Sunday n 1K, 5K runs start at Veterans Memorial Park By Krystle S. Morey The Trek for Hope, a 5K run/ walk to benefit the Haynes House of Hope in Granville, is this Sunday, Oct. 8. The race takes runners and walkers through village streets, a rail trail and over a covered footbridge during the height of the fall season. “We do it in October because of the nice fall foliage, good running weather and nice pretty trees, especially going down the old railroad track,” said Peter O’Brien, race organizer. The 5K kicks off at 9:30 a.m.from Veterans Memorial Park on Quaker Street in Granville. Racers will proceed from the park down Quaker Street to Price Chopper, then cut over to Church Street and proceed across the footbridge to Main Street. Then athletes will make their way to the former TD Bank and around the corner to North Street. From there, it’s a quick trip down the rail trail,
back across Main Street to River Street, around the back side of the Slate Valley Museum, and back down Main Street to the park. There’s a kids’ 1K fun run at 9 a.m. that brings the youngsters around the park. Registration is $15 in advance, or $20 on the day of the race from 8 to 9 a.m. at the park. The cost is $10 for those 18 and younger. For a registration form, visit thehayneshouseofhope.org. Registration forms can also be obtained by contacting O’Brien at 518-321-9640 or obrienfour@verizon.net. T-shirts will be given to the first 75 registrants. “We don’t have a lot of people that preregister,” O’Brien said, noting most athletes register at the park on the day of the event. This is the seventh year Haynes House has hosted the Trek for Hope. Each year the event draws about 100 participants. “We thought it was a good idea to get people together for a good cause,” said O’Brien, who
plans to run the race. Trophy awards will be given to the first-place overall male and female finishers in the 5K, plus first through third top finishers in each age group. Haynes House is looking for volunteers to point racers in the right direction along the trail and to hand out water. Vermont receives FEMA $329k grant Vermont’s congressional delegation announced Friday that the Vermont Department of Public Safety received a $329,378 Fire Prevention and Safety grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This grant will help DPS’ Division of Fire Safety implement “Fire Safe 802,” a statewide, rural home fire safety education project to protect Vermont’s most vulnerable residents, including children, seniors and people with disabilities. Working with local fire departments, the Division of Fire Safety will conduct home safety surveys, provide education on safety hazards and install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in homes that need them. Fire Safe 802 will build on past fire prevention efforts and is designed to minimize the incidence of death and
injuries caused by fire and fire-related hazards. “This federal grant will give the Vermont Division of Fire Safety the resources it needs to educate the public on fire risks and make critical improvements in people’s homes. The Division of Fire Safety and local fire departments play an invaluable role keeping our communities safe, and we are pleased FEMA has provided the resources they need to do this important work,” Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and. Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) said in a joint statement. Department of Public Safety Commissioner Thomas Anderson said, “With these funds, the Division of Fire Safety will be able to install lifesaving smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in homes that would otherwise not have
them.” “This award will be used to implement the Fire Safe 802 program, a new comprehensive community risk reduction project and home fire safety improvement campaign,” Division of Fire Safety Director Michael Desrochers said. “We are very fortunate to have received this grant and we are excited to implement the program.” Division of Fire Safety Public Education and Information Section Chief Micheal Greenia said, “Funding from this grant will allow us to continue working with the Vermont Fire Service, American Red Cross and the Vermont/New Hampshire Carbon Monoxide Alliance to meet our program objectives of reducing the number of fire related fatalities and injuries.”

Twentieth annual Autumn Mount Zion hike Pember Museum extends hours Autumn is the time of year to get out and about. Come to the Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site this Sunday for the 20th annual Mount Zion hike. Hikers will join battlefield interpreters and historians for a guided walk up craggy Mount Zion from 2-5 p.m. Mount Zion is now part of one of Vermont’s newest State Parks—Taconic Mountains Ramble. The top of Mount Zion has some of the best views of the entire battlefield, and is where you will hear interesting stories about the July 7, 1777, Revolutionary War Battle of Hubbardton, Mount Zion’s role
in the battle, the people of Hubbardton at the time, and the landmarks to be seen from the summit. Meet at the Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site visitor center before 2 p.m. After a brief orientation everyone will drive to the start of the hike, which is easy to moderate. The fee is $3 for adults and free for children under 15, and includes visiting the museum and battlefield. The Mount Zion hike follows a trail developed by long-time land owner, the late Kit Davidson. From Mount Zion there are sweeping views of
the Taconics, lower Green Mountain range, and Adirondacks. The Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site preserves the location of the only Revolutionary War battle in Vermont. The site is on Monument Hill Road six miles off Vermont Route 30 in Hubbardton or seven miles off Exit 5 on U.S. Route 4 in Castleton. The site is open Thursdays through Sundays, 9:30 to 5 p.m., Monday, Oct. 9, and closes for the 2017 season after Oct. 15. For more information, call 802-273-2282.
The Pember Museum in Granville will be adding evening hours beginning Oct. 26 and every fourth Thursday of the month thereafter except in November. Due to Thanksgiving being on the fourth Thursday, the museum will open on Nov. 30. The
hours will correspond with the library’s 1 to 8 p.m. evening hours and will be an opportunity for youth groups to visit the museum during that time. The schedule for this trial period will be Oct. 26, Nov. 30, Dec. 28, Jan. 25, Feb. 22 and March 22.
Pancake Breakfast in West Pawlet On Sunday, Oct. 8 there will be a Pancake Breakfast sponsored by the West Pawlet Volunteer Fire Department from 7:30-11 a.m. at the Pawlet Volunteer Fire Department on Vermont 133. Menu: Pumpkin Flavored pancakes, maple
syrup, other variety of pancakes, waffles, home fries, scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon, coffee, tea, milk and orange juice. Prices: $8 for seniors 65 and older, $10 for 12-65 and $5 for 5-12 and under that is free. Info: 802-345-4312.

to grow from the love and fellowship of the community and welcomes all community members to come for a day of pray, food and history. Services will be beginning at 11 a.m. with three former pastors participating as well as the current pastor and youth pastor. There will also be a prayer and worship team to join in. Special music will be provided by members of the church and church members have restored the old pipe organ and found someone to play it, enabling the church to come alive with music. After the service there will a luncheon/reception in the Fellowship Room downstairs. Guests can obtain the new Church history booklets and learn about the long history of the church. They can also browse through a display case full of church artifacts such as photos, documents and other items. Among the special pieces is a photograph and letter of the church founder who happened to be a second cousin of Ethan Allan. There is also a poster of a spiritual play from 1936. Planning for this event has been a twoyear-long undertaking by a four-person history team who have worked together to make this possible. The church is located on 6 South Park Place in Fair Haven.
