Residents and businesses in Poultney, Vermont are gearing up for their annual town-wide sale event on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. The event, which is Poultney’s fall version of the town’s ‘It is very well spring yard-sale attended. The event, is a streets are perennial favorite, packed with ranking among the people.’ most popun Mary Helm lar and well-attended events of the year right next to the Poultney Rotary Club’s Chili Cook-Off. “It’s very well-attended,” said organizer Mary Helm. “The streets are packed full of people every spring and fall.” Buyers and sellers range from far and wide. Helm said people are drawn to the event from all over Vermont and eastern New York. Perhaps some of the curb appeal stems from the fact that the event is not just another town-wide yard sale – it’s a unique amalgam of yard sale, farmer’s market and everything in between.

Large grant to improve Lake St. Catherine
Fall Foliage 5K Saturday
The Town of Poultney was selected to receive up to $36,900 as part of the Grantin Aid program run by the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation’s Agency of Natural Resources. The grant is aimed at helping aquatic nuisance control on Lake St. Catherine. The town partnered with the Lake St. Catherine Association (LSCA) to control invasive Eurasian watermilfoil.
The leaves are turning and the weather is cooling off, just in time for the Wells Fall Foliage 5K. The fifth annual race on Saturday, Oct. 14 takes participants from the Wells Village School on Vermont Route 135, through vibrant tree-covered streets, to the Lakeside Park on Lake St. Catherine, and back to the school. Last year, the race route took runners and walkers alike off a por-
tion of North Street and onto Western Shores Road. Athletes of all ability levels are welcome to participate. Each year participants are a collection of walkers, kids in strollers and fast runners. Wells’ Fall Foliage 5K is bestknown for its wooden maple leaf medals, which are awarded to place

Sale Continued from front page “Everyone and anyone is welcome to set up,” Helm said. Crafters, food vendors, maple sugar producers, carpenters, farmers, store owners and non-profits all partake and hawk their wares throughout Poultney. Although businesses and residents will offer a bevy of savings in their front lawns throughout the Poultney community, the majority of the action, the hub so to speak, will be Main Street. Every year, the Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce makes available spots on Main Street that a business or individual can purchase for $20 and be in the thick of the sale. Each spot is 15-feet wide and has a depth extending from the street to the sidewalk.
Helm said that there is no limit to the number of spaces available on Main Street. Each year, the Chamber sees enough participation to fill half of Main Street. Helm’s long-term goal is to completely fill the street with vendors. “There are always spaces available,” Helm said. She added that there are perks and benefits to hanging a proverbial shingle along Main Street. “People expect all the activity to be on Main Street,” she said. “That’s where the majority of people spend their money.” Anyone interested in reserving a spot on Main Street should contact Helm at 802-2871120 prior to the big day. Although late-comers can find Helm on Main Street the day of the town-wide sale, sporting a blaze orange vest as she helps coordinate the vendors setting up beginning at 7 a.m.

Greeley Symposium next Saturday In its 15th year of offering the writers’ symposium, the non-profit Horace Greeley Foundation, funded through donations and proceeds from Symposium fees, is dedicated to promoting the writer’s trade and the spirit of public oration that was central to Greeley’s life. What is perhaps equally central to their mission is preserving the sense of place and memory of life in a small New England village. Each year, the foundation meets in those places where Greeley lived, worked, debated and voraciously read the books and journals that fed his intellectual curiosity. The Symposium will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the United Baptist Church, On the Green, East Poultney. Registration for this event is $80 with a special student rate of $20. Registration is available online at www.horacegreeleyfoundation.org. Registration forms can also be found in brochures throughout the region, and at the Poultney Public Library. Onsite registration will be available at the event, as well. The Horace Greeley Writers’ Symposium is a celebration of Greeley’s life. The symposium explores the art of writing as
presented by publishers and writers in the fields of literature, poetry, philosophy, and history. This year’s keynote speaker is Oregon author and filmmaker, Marilyn Johnston. She received a fellowship from Oregon Literary Arts, a Robert Penn Warren Award, the Donna J. Stone National Literary Award for Poetry, and won the 2017 Flash Fiction Contest by the Salmon Creek Journal. Johnston founded the Mid-Valley Veterans’ Writers and is a creative writing instructor for the “Artists in the Schools” program, primarily working with incarcerated youth. Red Dust Rising, a collection of poems about her family’s healing from war, was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Additional featured speakers include: Joni Cole, the author of Another Bad-Dog book and a regular contributor to The Writer magazine. Cole is founder of the Writer’s Center of White River Junction, Vermont. Jackie Gordon, a self-publisher and public speaker for many years, Gordon is often asked to speak on the personality profile based on her third
book, “Do You Know You”. Laird Christensen, Director of the English and Writing programs at Green Mountain College, as well as, the Graduate program in Resilient and Sustainable Communities. The co-editor of “Teaching About Place” and “Teaching North American Environmental Literature”, his poems and essays have appeared in many publications and books. Central to his thinking, is that writers have the ability to reclaim one of the most ancient roles of story tellers: offering useful reflections on the vast changes already in motion and helping frame our possible futures in ways that inspire courage, resilience, and action. The Symposium is a dynamic day of learning and nurturing for writers of all ages, experience levels, and genres. This event draws writers and authors from across New York and New England to Poultney every year. For more information, or a link to the brochure and registration form, visit the foundation’s website at www. horacegreeleyfoundation. org or like them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ HoraceGreeleyFoundation.

with Renovate, diver assisted suction harvesting program and monitoring the boat launch in the Town of Wells also known as the Lake Greeter Program. In 2004, the battle against Eurasian watermilfoil started with a whole-lake treatment with an herbicide named Sonar. Since then spot-treatment of emerging milfoil plants with Renovate (in both liquid and pellet formulations) and limited suction harvesting has resulted in successful control, but not eradication. Swimmers, boaters and fishermen in the main lake have been able to enjoy unimpeded use of the lake’s waters. The “Greeter” program was also established by LSCA to examine incoming watercraft for contamination of invasive species including Eurasian watermilfoil and zebra mussels. The Greeter personnel have also helped educate
incoming boaters about the dangers of transporting invasive plants and organisms. A whole lake survey was performed by LSCA’s consultant Solitude Lake Management in May to determine the extent of new Eurasian watermilfoil growth. Based on the results of the May survey, treatment with Renovate OTF (pellets and liquid) was done on June 14 and after notification of lake residents. Suction harvesting was also be performed in late June to early August to control smaller beds of Eurasian watermilfoil. All these activities to control the spread of Eurasian Water Milfoil are in the fiveyear plan submitted by the LSCA and approved by the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation’s Agency of Natural Resources.

Pawlet, Rupert vote for ‘choice’ By Krystle S. Morey The seven-member committee tasked with merging Pawlet and Rupert school districts under Vermont’s Act 46 voted 4 to 3 last week to abolish designation to New York schools, meaning that students in those Vermont communities will get a choice between Vermont private schools or Granville and Salem high schools. However, Pawlet and Rupert can choose to vote against the committee’s recommendation Nov. 7. “If one town votes it down, it doesn’t happen,” said Susan Hosley, chairperson of the Pawlet and Rupert Act 46 Merger Committee. Though a no designation vote by the Vermont districts doesn’t prevent students from choosing Granville as a school, the New York high school is no longer designated in Vermont state law. “They (Vermont students) can still choose Granville,” Hosley said, regarding the nondesignation merger. An approval would also mean the Pawlet School District would be dissolved and merged with Rupert to form the new Mettawee School District. The merged district, which would take effect next year, would have a one budget and one school board – made up of four board members from Pawlet and two from Rupert. Because they do not have a secondary school of their own, students who live in Pawlet and
Rupert are currently designated to attend Granville High School or Salem High School, depending on their geographic location. They do, however, retain the choice to attend other high schools including private institutions such as Long Trail and Burr & Burton Academy. Act 46 is part of a push by the Green Mountain State to realign and restructure its education system to increase fiscal efficiency and student opportunity. Under Act 46, Vermont looks to realign and restructure its education system to increase fiscal efficiency and student opportunity. Declining enrollment and more than a dozen school governance structures are leading the Green Mountain State’s charge. Vermont’s kindergarten through grade 12 student population declined from 103,000 in 1997 to 78,300 in 2015, according to Act 46. Lawmakers claim the 13 different types of school districts statewide are not well-suited to achieve economies of scale and lack the flexibility to manage, share and transfer resources.

Tim Connell brings his Mandolin to the Tinmouth Old Firehouse tonight A world-touring, world class virtuoso mandolinist with more than twenty years professional performing experience, Tim Connell has created a sophisticated and original global mandolin style. Regarded as one of the top North American interpreters of Brazilian choro, Connell has also developed his own unique voice for the instrument, described in a recent Mandolin Magazine cover story as “fiery and energetic, soulful and evocative.” Connell comes to the area from Portland, Oregon. At the Old Firehouse he will be playing in a duo with a friend, Brazilian-American sevenstring guitarist, Cesar Garabini, tonight. Connell regularly tours Europe and North America in the international mandolin super group The Ger Mandolin

Pawlet Volunteer FD secures federal grant The Pawlet Volunteer Fire Department is pleased to announce that it has been awarded an Assistance to Firefighters Grant. This grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for $72,381, matched with $3,619 from the Department, will be used to replace the department’s aging Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) equipment, extra air cylinders, and auxiliary fill equipment. A SCBA, sometimes called an “air
pack,” consists of a backpack and a facemask that allows firefighters to breathe safely in toxic and extremely hot environments by supplying them with air from a cylinder worn on the firefighter’s back. Lars Lund, President of the department, said “This grant is vitally important to a small department like ours. The cost of replacing this equipment exceeds our annual budget. Without this grant, we would be unable to meet all of our fiscal needs.”

Fair Haven launches afterschool program By Ellen Ricks
The club’s goal? “Help children up their personal respect,” said Pedone. Some of the activities that the Boys and Girls Club do is “Positive Action” where for 15 minutes a day, a few days a week the children are put into groups and talk about their feelings about themselves, in the hopes of understanding and building self-esteem. Another activity is called “Motion” where students are taught breathing skills to cope with stresses. The club also has fun events plan for the kids, such as an upcoming carnival and a field trip to a horse farm. The children are also served dinner during the program. The food is prepared at the Rutland office and trucked to the school, where it is finished and served to the students by a certified food prep. This ensure that children have a nutritious meal that day. Making this a great, and safe place to send your child afterschool. Currently, the Boys and Girls Club at Fair Haven is a little on the small side, with only 12 students enrolled, but Pedone is optimistic. “The program is really starting to grow,” he said. The cost to enroll your child in the Boys and Girls Club at Fair Haven is $75 per child, per week. The price is half for each additional sibling. There are also daily rates available at $17.50 per child, per day. Finical assistance is available. You can pick up a membership application and financial assistant packages are available at the school, or by calling 802-747-4944. If you do not qualify for assistance, scholarships may be available.
“Children are first.” So said John Pedone, unit director at the Fair Haven Boys and Girls Club of Rutland County, about the new program at Fair Haven Grade School, the first afterschool program at the school. The Boys and Girls Club of Rutland County provides a safe place, caring mentors, and fun programs that gives children a place to go after school hours. The Boys and Girls Club in Fair Haven will be the second site opened by the club in the area, after the site in Barstow Memorial School opened last year. The club at Fair Haven Grade School has been opened to much support of the principal and staff. “Principal Cook wanted to this program and has been wonderfully helpful throughout this process. The staff at the school has been outstanding,” Pedone.said. The Boys and Girls Club is for all grade levels at the Fair Haven Grade School and runs on Monday through Friday from 3-6p.m. during regular school hours, 12 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. during early release days, and 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. for school vacation. This means that the Boys and Girls Club at Fair Haven will always give a child a safe place to stay after school. The club gives children a snack after school and provide the students games, coloring, as well as providing an educational curriculum based on the Boys and Girls Club’s five core areas: The Arts, Education & Career Development, Character & Leadership Development, Health & Life Skills, and Fitness & Recreation.

PHS to host program on Vermont road history On Thursday, Oct. 19, the Pawlet Historical Society will host Deborah Lee Luskin, of Newfane, Vermont, and her presentation: “Getting from here to There: A History of Roads and Settlement in Vermont”. The program will be held at the Pawlet Town Hall, 122 School Street, Pawlet, beginning at 7 p.m. This Vermont Humanities Council event is free, Luskin accessible and open to the public. Luskin, who holds a PHD in English Literature and has
worked as a journalist, radio commentator, office manager, farmer and beekeeper. “Getting from here to There: A History of Roads and Settlement in Vermont” will examine the difficulties of traveling in Vermont and the significant role those difficulties played in the state’s settlement development, culture and politics. Luskin will talk about the history of Vermont’s opposition to having good roads, dating back to 1753 when the Abenaki
joined forces with the French to protest the building of a British military road along an established Abenaki trail. More modern resistance has included the Green Mountain Parkway project and the building of interstates in Vermont. In anticipation of her presentation, Luskin poses the question, “Given this opposition, how is it we now drive cars in all seasons, in all weathers, in all corners of the state?” For information about this program or about the Pawlett Historical Society, please contact Steve Williams at 802-6459529 or at voorburg00@comcast.net .
