Must Do Holiday Activities The Holidays are here with Winter Delights and a Giving Spirit Nature’s stage is set for the holidays. Whether Adirondack or Green, the mountains above us are bare and blue with cold. Thermometer red huddles at the bottom for warmth. And the wind that whips off Champlain, Bomoseen or Catherine reminds us all of winter coats. In cities, towns and villages, workers playing elves have strung holiday lights as high up as they can, and then flipped the switch. All that we need now is…snow. “It’s that festive season of the year,” Charles Dickens once wrote. And that master of “Christmas Carol” cheer would urge us all, if he were here, to hold the holidays to our hearts and reach out for

each and every treat of the season. Here at Manchester Newspapers, we have put together the best list that we can of ways and means to make “merry” during the holidays. Contained within the following pages are all of the tree lightings, craft fairs, holiday bazaars, music venues, decorated rail trains, lighted skating rinks and packed-powder ski slopes that we could find by word of mouth, phone or email. So while you read this, as you sip from your bowl of Christmas punch, think hard and choose carefully from our generous menu of holiday merry-making suggestions.

Poultney fair’s last day

The Polar Express is coming to Saratoga Springs.

Enjoy the magic of Polar Express All Aboard! The Polar Express comes to life this holiday season at the Saratoga Railway Station at 26 Station Lane in Saratoga Springs. The event will occur Nov. 26 and Dec. 2-4, 7-11, 13-23. Departure times will be at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Dancing chefs will deliver hot chocolate and cookies to each guest while music from the Polar Express movie plays en route to the North Pole. There are three levels of seating and in the First and Diamond classes, passengers will drink from special keepsake Polar Express mugs. Have your tickets ready for the conductor to punch and receive a visit from the Hobo. Before arriving at the North Pole, the iconic book, The Polar Express, is read by the voice of author Chris Van Allsburg, as your Chef turns the pages to share the beautiful illustrations with your children. If your children prefer to read along from their seats, books are available at the time of your ticket purchase and will be waiting gift-wrapped for you at the station. Only 30 minutes will have passed since the train left the station as The Polar Express magically arrives at the outskirts of Santa’s North Pole village, where Santa Claus himself and his elves joyously welcome the train. Passengers will stay comfortably nestled and warm in their seats while Santa and his helper elf board the train. During the return trip, Santa will

greet each child with his signature holiday spirit and present them with the first gift of Christmas: a bell cut from his sleigh. It is said that only children and those who still believe can actually hear the bell ring. Join in the singing as your Chef or Conductor lead Christmas caroling on the 30-minute return trip. In the spirit of The Polar Express passengers are invited to wear pajamas and the location of The North Pole will remain secret to maintain the holiday magic. Take a trip to the gift shop at the train station to find the perfect gift to help remember the occasion. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling 877-726-7245. Tickets range from $40-$80. Group rates are available and the event is wheelchair assessable.

Today is the last day of the annual Lakes Region Farmers Market Christmas Fair in Poultney. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. attendees will be able to visit the 60 vendors participating in this year’s show. This free event will have available parking in the front or back lots of Poultney High School. All your favorite vendors will be returning along with a few new vendors to spice things up. You will find such things as fresh balsam wreaths, Christmas decorations, lighted birdhouses, paintings, baked goods, maple products, jewelry, soap, candles, pottery, rustic wood products, pickles, quilts, apples, dog bandanas, birdhouses, and so much more. The following weekend Poultney Public Library will host their third annual Santa Story Time on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 6 p.m. Santa will arrive at 6:30 p.m. in front of the library on a Poultney Volunteer Fire Department fire engine. He will then lead the children down Main Street to the Poultney Town office where Library staff will then serve Cocoa and Cookies. There will be nut and gluten-free options available as well. Kids will get to meet with Santa and receive a candy cane. Following the meet and greet Santa will hold a count-down to light the town Christmas tree. The town Christmas tree will boast memory lights sold by the St. Raphael’s Ladies Guild to benefit the Poultney Food Shelf and the Poultney Woman’s Club Tree of Giving. Father Daniel Jordan of St. Raphael’s Church will make a few remarks on the memory lights during the tree lighting. For more information, contact the library at ppl5556@yahoo.com or 802287-5556

Tree lighting, First Friday event ring in holidays in Granville Holidays in the park in the village of Granville have become increasingly popular in recent years, from towering trees that are decorated to flashing lights that are synchronized with music. As impressive as last year’s “Wizards in Winter” display may have been, village officials say this year’s presentation will be bigger and better, incorporating video. Based on the movie “Frozen,” the magical scenes of Elsa and Anna will take over Veterans Memorial Park this season. Lights will be synchronized with video from the movie, particularly the scene where Else builds her magical ice castle. The plan: When the princess throws her hands right, everything on the right hand side of the park will go, and vice versa. “It’s a little bit ambitious, but it’s a doable thing,” said Rick Roberts, village clerk. Volunteers started stringing lights the

first weekend in November. They’ll stay up until Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 16. The annual tree-lighting ceremony will be Dec. 2 starting at 6 p.m., dovetailing with the Slate Valley Museum and Pember Library and Museum’s December First Friday events. At the Slate Valley Museum will be the Festival of Trees, an annual display of decorated trees that are submitted for judging or donated for sale at a silent auction. The Pember will host a holiday bazaar and Festival of Wreaths event. A holiday committee made up of 25 trustees, town officials, community members and business leaders gets together to develop the theme each year. Roberts said the committee has been working since July on plans for the park. “Before we know it, it will be the magical time of Christmas,” added Gordy Smith, the

village’s deputy mayor. The committee will build an oversized screen where the videos will be projected. The screen will eventually be positioned between the American flag and the fountain in the park, so passersby can easily see the animations. The village budgets about $1,000 to spend on new decorations annually, but it recently made a deal with Great Meadow Federal Credit Union to be a sponsor for the treelighting event and decorations around town. GMFCU has pledged $7,500 each year for the next five years for the village of Granville to put toward its holiday celebrations. GMFCU will have a booth set up at the park during the Dec. 2 tree-lighting ceremony, where it will give away hats and mittens. Other area businesses will also set up booths, including Dunkin’ Donuts, which will give away hot coffee and doughnuts.

Salem welcomes holidays with parade and shopping event The town of Salem will welcome the holiday season on Saturday, Nov. 26, when the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce presents its annual Christmas Parade, beginning at 1 p.m. “It’s really sweet and very much a small-town parade,” said organizer Laura Dunham. “Visiting friends and relatives come out for the weekend especially for this event. It’s small-town life at its finest.” This year’s parade theme is “A Victorian Christmas,” with parade entrants encouraged to design floats to fit the theme. “We put out a Facebook post in August asking for theme suggestions and this one was the most popular,” said Dunham. “We’re looking forward to seeing what everyone come up with for floats.” The parade kicks off at 1 p.m. from Vail Street, then turns south onto Main Street, proceeds to Park Place, then turns west and ends at the fairgrounds. Leading this year’s parade is grand marshal Angelica Zold, one of Salem

Salem will hold their holiday parade on Nov. 26. Central School’s outstanding students. The Washington County Dairy Princess, Salem town supervisor Seth Pitts, and the Daisies, Brownies and Boy Scouts will also join the festivities, along with many others. Parade entertainment will include the Susi Shoes Dancers, the Cool 2 B

Kind Kids, fire trucks, horses, floats and other surprises. All performances will take place in front of the judges’ stand by Proudfit Hall on Main Street, with commentary by the parade’s master of ceremonies, Pete Carrolan. The highlight of the parade, of course, will be Santa and Mrs. Claus’

arrival in a wagon pulled by Clydesdale horses. In addition to the parade, children can participate in an Elf on the Shelf Scavenger Hunt from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at participating Salem businesses. Dunham said that children should look for the Elf on the Shelf poster in the window of businesses in town. “It will be a good time for everyone,” said Dunham. “People really look forward to it.” The Salem Christmas Parade is held the same weekend as Small Business Saturday, when people are encouraged to support their local businesses. Many of Salem’s businesses will be offering specials throughout the day. Dunham suggests parade-goers arrive early and park in the public parking lot next to the village park on Main Street. The parade will last about 20 minutes. More information about the parade and other events can be found at www. salemnychamber.com or by contacting Laura Dunham at 518-854-3833.

Refreshments will be served aboard this hour-long journey through Southern Vermont. The 2016 Elf Express will take place Dec. 17-18 starting at 10 a.m. Five rides will be held throughout each day. Santa and Mrs. Claus will also make a

surprise appearance during the event to present each child with a special gift. Train departures will be at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 4 p.m. Seats are limited and tickets must be purchased in advance. Adults cost $25 to ride and children ages 2-12 are $20. Saratoga to celebrate 30th Victorian Streetwalk

Enjoy a 45-minute ride with Santa on the holiday train.

Santa Train returns to Rutland The annual Santa Train returns to Rutland on Saturday Dec. 3 at the Jeffords Train Station downtown. Boarding for the Vermont ride begins a half hour before each departure time. Departure times will include 10 a.m., 12 p.m. 1:30 p.m. 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. The 45-minute ride on a holiday decorated train will take passengers on a magical journey through Santa’s Village in search of Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus only to find that they are both secretly hidden on the train and they both ride to Santa’s Village with everyone. While on board individuals can expect tasty treats, songs, stories and more. This year’s village is constructed and themed by Rutland professional dance instructor Gayle Lang, along with her students who have been practicing their

Santa’s Village Elf Recital. In addition, Glenda J Hawley, general manager at Catamount Radio, said members from the Catamount Team will perform their own musical skits, with cookies, chocolate milk and many other surprises for the kids. “The different thing about our Santa train…We are ALL singing dancing elves,” Hawley said. Sponsored by Catamount Radio and Diamonds and more, the train has scaled back from previous years to a one-day event that families and friends will not want to miss. Tickets can be purchased online in advance for $16. For more information, or to purchase tickets, visit http://www. catamountradio.com. There are no restrooms aboard the train.

The Victorian Streetwalk, a citywide holiday celebration, will bring out the holiday cheer in the region with caroling, live entertainment, decorations and more. On Dec. 1, this free event runs from 6-9 p.m. at various locations in Saratoga Springs. This is the 30th year of the streetwalk in Saratoga. The Saratoga Central Catholic School Choir will serenade the crowd with Christmas carols beginning at 5:45 p.m. as the children wait for Santa and Mrs. Claus who will arrive on horse and carriage, escorted by the Christian Brothers Academy Marching Band, and Santa’s elves. Saratoga Mayor Joanne Yepsen will light the tree at 6 p.m. Santa, Clara, elves, and Rumple Dumple will visit with children throughout the evening in the beautiful Santa Cottage on Broadway. The cottage was renovated by the students at the F. Donald Myers Education Center Construction Trades Program. More than 35 sites city-wide will be packed with free entertainment, including the following: Flying Fingers Fiddlers, Spa City Duo, Shenendehowa MS Select Choir, Pokingbrook Morris Dancers, cappella and brass groups from Skidmore College, Saratoga Soundtrack Chorus, Sax-O-Claus, The National Museum of Dance

School of Arts ballet dancers and Mother ginger, the Saratoga County 4-H club’s gingerbread house display at various locations, The Ice Man, live reindeer, Santa and Mrs. Claus, Festival of Trees at the City Center, special DBA local coupon books, face painting, and the Newfoundland Dog Club. The Saratoga City Ballet and Octavo Singers will also be delighting audiences of all ages as they combine talents at the Universal Preservation Hall. Broadway will be closed from 5-9 p.m. from the Route 50 arterial to the Spring Street intersection. It will likely be chilly, so dress for the weather. To help remedy the cold a bit, CDTA will run free bus shuttles every 20 minutes from the Empire State College parking lot at 111 West Avenue on the west side of Saratoga Springs, NYRA’s Oklahoma track just off Exit 14 of I-87, Gate 21 on the corner of East Avenue and Union Avenue, and the Weibel Avenue Skating Rink parking lots on the east side of Saratoga Springs to downtown from 4:30-10 p.m. Stop by the Post Office with your stamped Christmas card envelopes, get them canceled with the specially designed 30th anniversary Victorian Streetwalk cancellation (free) and you have a month to mail them.

Toys for Tots Train and Santa to deliver gifts to local children Santa and members of the U.S. armed forces will bring toys and cheer as the popular Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Train returns to Whitehall at the Amtrak station on Main Street on Sunday, Dec. 4. The train usually arrives before noon, and the exact arrival time will be announced. American Legion Post 83 will again sponsor the Toys for Tots Train, which is operated by Amtrak with the cooperation of CP Rail. All are welcome to greet the train and join in the festivities as Santa and Mrs. Claus, as well as the Marines, will get off the train with bags full of toys, coats, mittens and goodies for the kids,

which is a highlight of the holiday season. No preregistration is necessary and the event is free and open to everyone. Kids can get their pictures taken with Santa and Dunkin’ Donuts will warm everyone up with hot chocolate and doughnut holes. The American Legion will be open for those who wish to use the restrooms or to warm up while waiting for the train or during the visit. The Toys for Tots train will remain at the station for about 30 minutes before it continues north. For more information on the train or to verify the arrival time, contact the American Legion Post 83 at 518-499-2482.

Everyone is welcome at the Toys for Tots Train event in Whitehall Dec. 4.
