Veterans Day parade GRANVILLE A Veterans Day ceremony will begin on Friday, Nov. 11 at 9 a.m. at the monument on the front lawn of Granville High School with a short dedication service, laying of a wreath, “Taps” by buglers from the high school band, and a salute to veterans. Then parade marchers will line up in the free parking lot on East Main Street. They’ll stop at Price Chopper for some complimentary coffee and doughnuts on the way. Lineup for the parade is at 9:30 a.m. The parade begins at 10 a.m. and will include floats, local veterans, fire departments and the American Legion Riders. It’ll proceed down Main Street to the bridge, where a prayer will be said for the soldiers and sailors lost at sea. This ceremony includes tossing a wreath into the Mettowee River, a rifle salute and Taps, followed by the Granville Junior-Senior Band’s rendition of The Navy Hymn. Another service will be held at about 10:30 a.m. in Veterans Memorial Park, where Granville Mayor Brian LaRose and Town Supervisor Matt Hicks have been invited to speak. Democrat Tanya Boone, local small business owner and Democratic candidate for Congress in New York’s 21st Congressional district, will be the featured guest
speaker. Following the ceremony in the park, veterans and their families and members of organizations that participated in the parade are invited to the VFW Post 1653 on North Street for a free lunch. u

Polar Plunge LAKE GEORGE Freeze for a reason on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 9 a.m. to noon at Shepard Park Beach in Lake George for the 11th annual Lake George Polar Plunge for the Special Olympics. Plunging into icy waters is an age-old tradition in Lake George to help support and raise money for the athletes of Special Olympics New York. Last year nearly 600 people braved the icy waters while hundreds of spectators looked on with excitement. Many form teams and have fun with it. This year, if you raise $100 you will receive a sweatshirt. Registration is from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and at noon it’s time to take the plunge. Whether you want to jump right in or take a slow crawl into the chilly waters, it’s going to be a chill day. Sunday19 Holiday Parade SOUTH GLENS FALLS The South Glens Falls Fire Company Holiday Parade will take place on Sunday, Nov. 19, four days before Thanksgiving. This year’s parade is sponsored by Carriage Traders. This year’s parade starts at 1 p.m. and the theme is “Throwback Holiday” in the spirit of an o l d f a s h i o n e d Christmas. This is the largest annual parade in Saratoga County and typically has 10 divisions with numerous floats, marching bands and similar attractions. The parade will start at Carriage Traders near the intersection of Route 9 and William Street, at the south end of the village of South Glens Falls, and head north on Route 9 to Third Street. The beneficiaries this year will be Marine Corps Memorial Detachment No. 2’s Toys for Girls and Boys and the Tri-County United Way “Live United” programs. These groups distribute donated new toys and non-perishable food items to local families in Warren, Washington and northern Saratoga Counties. While the parade is free, participants and spectators are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate to Toys for Girls and Boys and a non-perishable food item to donate to the TriCounty United Way. u
