Blood drive set for Nov. 30 The Granville Lions and Leos will sponsor their annual fall blood drive on Thursday, Nov. 30 from 1-6 p.m. at the Granville High School Library. Appointments can be scheduled by calling Mary Ann Niles at 518 642-3516 or by going online at redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code GRANVILLELEOSNY. Walk-ins are always welcome but appointments are preferred. Come to donate and receive a free American Red Cross T-Shirt, while supplies last. This twice-yearly collaboration between the Leos and the Lions is of great benefit to the community. The Lions Club
has sponsored blood drives for many years but we have joined forces with the Leos for the past several years with great success. Leos help with many aspects of the drive and are particularly effective in encouraging high school students and staff to donate blood. Students who become first time donors frequently return to donate in future blood drives. In return for their participation, the club is eligible to participate in the Red Cross scholarship program which makes an award of a minimum of $250 to a graduating senior. The amount depends on the number of units collected as well as other criteria.
‘Toys for girls and boys’ drive underway The Tri-County Marines Toys for Girls and Boys drive kicked off Nov. 1. Drop off boxes are located at several locations in the area including Great Meadow Federal Credit Union, Manchester Newspapers, the Granville American Legion Post 323 and Granville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1653. Toys collected will go to children in Washington, Warren and Saratoga counties. Last year, 735 children received gifts. “We just want to reach out to
all of the children that we can,” said Jerry E. Austin, member of the Marine Corps. Memorial Detachment 2. Memorial Detachment 2, a not-for-profit organization of the league, started the “TriCounty Marines Toys for Girls and Boys” drive last year, after it cut ties with Toys for Tots. Austin said the split ensures all toys collected will stay within the three counties, rather than being distributed across the state and beyond. On Nov. 17, there will be a spaghetti dinner at the
Granville American Legion Post 323 to help raise funds to buy additional toys. The dinner, which costs $8, is from 5-7 p.m. Spaghetti with meat sauce, tossed salad and a dessert will be served. Take-outs are also available. Families wishing to sign up to receive gifts from the drive should go to the Marine Corps. Memorial Detachment 2 in Hudson Falls Nov. 13-15. A photo ID, proof of local residency and a phone number are required. For additional information, call Austin at 802-645-1951.

front lawn of Granville High School, includes a short dedication service, laying of a wreath, “Taps” by buglers from the high school band, and a salute to the veterans who are still with us as well as those who have passed on. The entire program takes about 20 minutes. Following the ceremony, parade marchers will line up in the free parking lot on East Main Street, next to the Village Yarn Shop. They’ll stop at Price Chopper for some complimentary coffee and doughnuts on the way. Line-up for the parade is at 9:30 a.m. The parade is expected to begin at 10 a.m. and will include floats, local veterans, fire departments and the American Legion Riders. About 300 people attend the Granville Veterans Day ceremonies each year, said Jerry Austin of the Granville American Legion who is also Adjutant for Washington County American Legion and local parade captain. “It’s heartwarming to see, when you have a turnout like that,” Austin said. It’ll begin at the World War II clock monument in front of the former TD Bank, where a wreath will be placed in remembrance of those veterans lost. Marchers will then proceed down Main Street to the bridge, where the chaplain will offer a prayer for the soldiers and sailors lost at sea. This ceremony, which includes tossing a wreath from the
bridge into the Mettowee River, will be followed by a rifle salute and Taps. It will close with the Granville JuniorSenior Band’s rendition of The Navy Hymn. The Color Guard will reform and proceed to Veterans Memorial Park where, at about 10:30 a.m., the Granville Junior-Senior Band will start the ceremony with the Star Spangled Banner, followed by the chaplain’s prayer. The Auxiliaries will place wreaths on the monuments followed by a rifle salute and Taps. Granville Mayor Brian LaRose and Town Supervisor Matt Hicks have been invited to speak at the park. Tanya Boone, local small business owner and Democratic candidate for Congress in New York’s 21st Congressional district, will be the featured guest speaker. The Granville Junior-Senior Band will close the ceremony at about 11:30 a.m. with America the Beautiful. Following the ceremony, veterans and their families and members of organizations that participated in the parade are invited to VFW Post 1653 on North Street for a free lunch. Places all across the region are honoring the men and women who have protected our country by providing an array of brunches, dinners, and entertainment for this Veterans Day.
Continued from front page Legion Post 50. The dinner will be held at the Castleton American Legion Post located located on Route 4A in Castleton. The meal is provided free of charge to all veterans and their families.

Around the world Hampton native, wife travel globe on unbeaten path Editor’s note: This is the second installment of the story. The first installment was published last week. By Matthew Saari When the FreePress last spoke with Hampton native Ethan Atwood, a Whitehall High School graduate, he was on his way to India and Bangladesh and had just eaten a pickle which made his tongue go numb. Many months and incalculable miles later, Ethan has returned to his family home in Hampton, having completed the journey of a lifetime, which took him and his wife, Lauren, around the world. The Atwoods embarked on their journey in late 2015. Their road was certainly the less traveled, taking them through Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Southeast Asia before coming full circle back to America, wrapping up with a cross country road trip through the southern United States before terminating in Hampton, Ethan’s childhood home. Over the course of nearly two years, Ethan and Lauren not only visited these locales but embedded themselves with the locals, not only to keep traveling expenses as low as possible but to learn about the various cultures, personalities and lives of the people they encountered. Shortly after their return to rural upstate New York the Atwoods sat down with the FreePress and provided remarkably clear, concise details about distant vistas, mountains and ancient monuments and startling revelations about foreign cultures, the changing perceptions of Americans and the U.S. and, of course, culinary insights which can be delectable or unsavory, depending on your food preferences.
People and government The Atwoods chose to forego the well-trodden tourist approach to travel – airports, hotels catering to foreigners and well-known monuments and landmarks. Instead the couple opted to get their boots on the ground, embedding themselves into the local culture, living with locals, dining with locals and picking up
the odd job to help pay for expenses. “We did a lot of couch-surfing,” Lauren said. “It’s a lot of meeting locals and staying with them; just to understand how their life is.” “It’s pretty much how we stayed everywhere,” Ethan added. The resulting insights into the various cultures are almost unprecedented. In America, the lives of citizens are inextricably intertwined with the machinations of government, whether it be local, state or federal. When someone has a problem in America, they typically turn to their government for a resolution. In Europe the line between government and private citizens is even further blurred and entangled. “Europe’s a totally different ball of wax,” Ethan said. “They’re much more in tandem with government.” “Government is intertwined in their everyday lives,” added Lauren. Based upon their observations, Ethan said Europeans tend to view “government as the solution,” adding that European countries tend to be more aligned with socialism. In stark contrast however, the further east you travel, the more separation there is between individuals and their government to the point where government and its citizens exist in completely separate spheres. “The local politics merge with local problem-solving,” said Ethan. “The community is so in touch, they are so aware of what’s going on that the community has much more social pressure for that person to correct what was being done…there’s a lot more shame involved.”
Ethan cited two examples. The first involving a store owner in Egypt. The business owner did not want cars traveling at high speeds in front of his store so he took it upon himself to build a speed bump out of miscellaneous objects to slow traffic. The second example involved a village in India. Some villagers wanted natural gas for their stoves so they tapped into the municipal gas line and pirated the resource. “Nobody got in trouble, they just got it cut off,” Ethan said. “They’re not really paying attention to government; it’s a separate world.” Sometimes, however, this separation owes more to corrupt governments and police which leads to feelings of hopelessness from the citizens. “Many countries we went to complained about corruption in their government – it’s almost like a business,” Ethan said. Lauren added an anecdote concerning a family member in Bangladesh. “You can’t go to the police. My cousin who bought a laptop got robbed, on the rickshaw,” she said. “I said ‘go to the police, report’ and he said ‘the police won’t do anything.’ There aren’t structures in place for him to get his laptop back.” Part 3 next week

Business owner: Beatles print stolen from shop $111K grant ensures quality To the editor: At about mid-day on Saturday, Oct. 14, during the Town-wide Tag Sale Day, the framed Beatles print pictured here was stolen from The Shoppe at 105 Main located at 105 Main St. in Poultney. The black and white print and black frame measure approximately 36-inches by 14-inches. The print was hanging in a very visible spot in a room at the back of the store and had a “Not for Sale yet” tag taped on it. The thief removed the tag and dropped it on the floor. The possible suspect is a white male, approximately between five-feet, five-inches and fivefeet, seven-inches in height, of average to stocky build and
carrying a large, white shopping bag with a large, rectangular wooden sign protruding from the bag. The sign is believed to be the only item large enough to have concealed the print in order to remove it from the store. When he left the store he was in a hurry and accidentally caught one of the handles of the bag on a coat hanging by the door. He kept tugging, trying to get loose, until I encouraged him to back up a bit so that I could help him get unhooked. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize until a few moments later why he was so anxious to get out. My attention was on the bag handle and not its contents. There were approximately 15 other people in the store at

that time; two of them thought they knew the individual in question. However, due to the hectic nature of the shopping situation, I was unable to press them for further information. I’m hoping these people will see this and return to the store or call me to discuss the matter more fully. I also would like to ask anyone with any information regarding this incident to call me at 802-287-2239 or 802-2870961 or to stop by the store. Did you see anyone with this print on that day, or has someone you know boasted of finding a great Beatles print at the townwide sale? I’d appreciate the community’s help. Sincerely, Katherine Morey, owner

Rutland Regional celebrates #Giving Tuesday Tree #Giving Tuesday is a national movement created to inspire donors to take collaborative action to give back to the charities and causes they support. #Giving Tuesday takes place annually on the Tuesday after Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This year #Giving Tuesday is Nov. 28. Please join Rutland Regional Medical Center in this important giving initiative on Nov. 28, to raise funds in support of the Early Detection Saves Lives campaign to help bring new 3D breast imaging technology to the local region. It is important to note that one in eight women and one in 1,000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Rutland Regional’s team of caring and compassionate breast care spe-
cialists are committed to breast cancer prevention, early detection and treatment. Mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat. As part of this commitment, Rutland Regional Medical Center will purchase two new 3D breast imaging machines, with a goal of raising $350,000 to fully cover the cost of one new unit. As a not-for-profit hospital, Rutland Regional relies on your support to assist with this initiative. With the purchase of new 3D breast imaging machines, Rutland Regional will enhance the patient experience, and will provide their radiologists with clearer, more precise images. As healthcare technologies continue to advance, Rutland
Regional Medical Center is committed to providing these advancements to you, your loved ones, friends and neighbors, folks who depend on Rutland Regional for the very best care. Your donation, no matter the amount, will enable superior breast imaging and detection of abnormalities at an earlier stage, which can help to save lives. Please join the #Giving Tuesday movement on Nov. 28 with a gift in support of 3D breast imaging technology for our region. To learn more about the benefits of 3D breast imaging technology, and the importance of regular mammograms, please visit the Rutland Regional Medical Center’s website, www. rrmc.org/ways-to-give/fundraising.
Continued from page 12 Beauty Shop, Prunier’s, the Sunrise and Wooden Soldier Restaurants and the Birdseye Diner. Once the form is filled out, please include your donation and send a check to Rosie Doran at 550 Doran Rd., Fair Haven, Vermont 05743. Checks are to be made payable to the Castleton
Woman’s Club. Donations help fund local scholarships. Please join the Castleton Woman’s Club and Castleton Free Library for an old-fashioned community gathering featuring children’s stories and singing and the lighting of the Tree of Remembrance. Later, join Santa for hot chocolate, treats, and music performed by the Castleton Village School Jazz Ensemble inside the library. For more information, please call Jan at 802-468-5574.
