This chorus has been around for years and has entertained young and old everywhere and anywhere. At 7:30 p.m., the “Holiday House Players” will entertain the adults with a Christmas skit entitled “Laughing all the way.” “This year there will be lots of laughs, even though the skit is set in the unemployment office,” Stahl joked. “And it is a big secret who is seen applying for unemployment.” There are also delicious goodies baked by patrons of the library and also a change to win unique gifts in a free raffle. All are asked to come and partake in this fun Christmas “party.”

The Civil War President saw this holiday as a time for a war-weary people to pause and give thanks that the conflict would soon be over. The Lincoln family’s Vermont home is Hildene. Built by presidential son Robert Lincoln in 1905 and located on a 412 acre estate, Hildene was home to three generations of the President’s direct descendants for 70 years. Guests to the historic site are encouraged to visit the Lincoln exhibit located on the second floor of the home, honoring the legacy of the nation’s 16th President. “The American Ideal: Abraham Lincoln and the Second Inaugural” is set within the context of Lincoln’s greatest speech, harkening back to the then radical beliefs first enunciated in the Declaration of Independence: equality, justice and opportunity for all. Among the many artifacts featured in the exhibit are one of only three of the president’s iconic stovepipe hats in existence and a Lincoln Bible. To applaud President Lincoln’s role in making Thanksgiving a day of celebration for all Americans and to

acknowledge Abe’s relentless curiosity and ability to tackle the most serious of challenges, Hildene challenges its visitors to “Guess the Lincoln Pennies in the Jar.” The contest commences on Monday, Nov. 20 and runs through Sunday, Dec. 3, the conclusion of The Museum Store’s annual open house weekend, Our Home for the Holidays? Youth ages five to 15, accompanied by an adult, are invited to stop by the Welcome Center during this time to record their estimate. Adults, those 16 and older, may also participate. Only one entry per person is allowed and no admission fee or store purchase is required to make a guess. The winner will be the person whose guess comes closest to the total number of pennies. The prize winner in each category will be determined at the

end of open house weekend and notified. Guests are invited to explore the estate beginning at the Welcome Center and The Museum Store for check in and including the Lincoln family’s home and gardens; Lincoln exhibit; 1903 Pullman car, Sunbeam, Many Voices exhibit; the goat dairy and cheese-making facility; Dene Farm and 12 miles of trails. The Lincoln Family Home at Hildene is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $20 for adults and $5 for children under 14. Members, volunteers and children under six are admitted freely. Hildene is closed Nov. 23, Thanksgiving Day, and Dec. 24-26 for the holidays. For more information visit www.hildene.org, call 802-3621788 or email info@hildene. org.

Rotary Clubs join with Habitat for Humanity each day where they are needed. Although Rotary Clubs have supported projects all over the world, this was one of the first times clubs have combined contributions in such a way to make an impact on a specific local project. Said Fair Haven Rotary member Jennifer Larson, “We saw a need, and realized that if several Rotary clubs gave a partial contribution, it would make the construction trailer possible. Habitat has made such a great job of providing an important basic need in our communities – safe, affordable housing. This new trailer will now be a part of every job locally!”

Mettawee holds Veterans Day breakfast On Thursday, Nov. 9, the Mettawee Community School, serving grades kindergarten through sixth of the towns of Pawlet and Rupert, continued its tradition of welcoming area veterans to the school to be recognized for their military service. Principal Brooke DeBonis explained this year’s Veterans Day activities, “We invited our local veterans to join us for a breakfast. We served muffins, bagels, milk, and coffee. In preparation for the Veterans Day Breakfast, the sixth graders interviewed students in grades K-6 asking them to share why they are thankful for the veterans. The sixth grade teachers then showed this interview movie at our event. It was truly amazing.”

The morning also consisted of the sixth graders singing the traditional songs for each branch of the United States military. Per Mettawee tradition, veterans of each branch were invited to stand when it was their song. MCS second graders shared a poem and sang “America”. DeBonis said in closing, “It was a positive event and the students were very engaged. I had the students turn and thank a veteran. This was a great way for the students to show their gratitude directly towards a veteran. Most importantly, many veterans thanked me for having this special event at our school.” U.S. Army Airborne veteran, and school parent, Jeff Hammell said of the event,

“This was the first Veterans Day event I have attended at Mettawee Community School, so I cannot compare to past activities. But, the first thing that struck me was how large of an event it was. I had no idea. How cool. Not only did I think it was well attended, I thought the event was heartwarming and well done. I think it is good for our youth to be exposed, and enlightened, to what is not always an easy topic for some. I think it helps develop empathy, and an appreciation, for veterans.” Following the Mettawee Community School’s Veterans Day Breakfast the attendees representing the various United States military branches - gathered for a photo.

When one thinks of Habitat for Humanity, one mostly thinks of building affordable homes with homeowners and volunteers to keep costs low. But four area Rotary clubs from Fair Haven, KillingtonPico, Rutland South, and Poultney decided that a significant way to support Habitat of Humanity’s work in Rutland County was to pool their resources to help them purchase a trailer. This construction trailer will move from site to site where homes are being built. Their gift ensures that Habitat of Rutland County will be able to safely store building supplies and tools, providing easy access and storage right on site

‘Stuff a Cruiser’ a success To the editor: We would like to thank police chief Humphries, all the officers and volunteers that participated in the Annual Stuff a Cruiser. We would also like to thank Shaw’s, for their support of Fair Haven Concerned. We are fortunate to be a part of such a wonderful giving community.

All those that donated should be proud of their efforts. Together we managed to collect a record breaking 2,580 pounds of food, including 29 turkeys and more than $300 in cash donations. I would like to extend our deepest gratitude as your donations brought blessings to your neighbors. Fair Haven Concerned

Thanks to all for support To the editor: On Friday, Nov. 3, ARC Rutland Area again held their Annual Janet Wether by Pampered Chef Bingo at the American Legion in Rutland. This is the only fundraiser held by ARC each year. The funds collected go towards the services provided to individuals with Developmental Disabilities and their families, which derive from advocacy, resources and community opportunities. Special thanks must go to Carol Murphy of Cooking Carol’s Way. Without her support the event wouldn’t have had the materials needed. She came with everything, especially her enthusiasm, increasing the fun. Not only was there a Bingo that had Pampered Chef items as prizes, she even had door prizes to give away, but then there was also a 50/50 raffle and a basket raffle. The following were very supportive of ARC Staff and Board: TD Bank, Dominos, Holistic Happiness, Java Traders of Vermont, Vermont Coffee, New England Coffee, Plymouth Cheese, Noreens Petals and Greens, Blush Salon, Avanti, Paramount, Pyramid Wellness Center, Rutland Food Co-op, and CCV; thank you. To those who attended, ARC hopes you had an evening of fun, caring and community. Every amount helps, with this event there is renewed hope. ARC helps the local SelfAdvocates Becoming Empowered - Rutland with their monthly meetings and their goals; one is their abilities awareness training, call them to come present it to you. They also help the Rutland Family Support Network with their listserve that give families the opportunity to connect with each other and organizations. They do Representative Payee work for around 55 people, read material from State and Local Standing Committee meetings on developmental disability services and advocate for changes when necessary. Of course the more known activities are the five dances provided each year, one of which is being planned for Halloween. One group, the Aktion Club, a Kiwanis family club for adults living with disabilities, continues with their volunteer advisor, Jane Frank. This club has again planted a garden to donate food to the needy and hold a monthly activity night at the Bardwell House. The club continues to need community volunteers to help people

with developmental disabilities get to, and do, their service projects. Would you consider being a mentor to this Kiwanis family club? Also, call ARC if the club can be of service to you, or to find out their calendar of service projects. There are three part-time employees and two volunteer staff members at ARC Rutland Area. ARC appreciates all for their assistance in making ARC Rutland Area’s Pampered Chef Bingo fun and a great place for community. We know that all in attendance had a great afternoon because of the efforts of Carol Murphy, the American Legion, ARC Rutland Area Board and Staff members. When asked why ARC Representative Payee services are important, one person said, “I have learned to be my own payee.” ARC knows that people with developmental disabilities don’t have naturally developing circles of support, at the dances we offer people opportunities to grow their circles of support by encouraging members to meet someone new. Sincerely, Lisa S. Lynch, Executive Director

U.S. Forest Service officials in Vermont are encouraging the public to purchase Christmas tree removal permits should they be interested in a $5 tree for the holidays. This year, all fourth graders can take advantage of the Every Kid in a Park Initiative and get a free Christmas tree voucher found here: www. everykidinapark.gov. Fourth graders that present a printed copy of the voucher may redeem it for an EKIP Pass and a Christmas tree removal permit at one of the U.S. Forest offices listed below. This is a one-time opportunity to cut down a Christmas tree on national forest land during the 2017 holiday season. Christmas trees for personal use may be cut on the Green Mountain National Forest, subject to the following conditions: A “Christmas Tree Removal” permit must be purchased at one of the Forest Service offices located in Rutland, Manchester Center, or Rochester, Vermont. The permit must be attached to the tree before transporting it from the site where it was cut. The permit holder is responsible for knowing that the tree comes from Forest Service land. Maps are available when you purchase your permit. Trees over 20 feet tall are not designated for cutting by the Christmas tree permit. The height of the tree stump left after a tree has been cut should be six inches or less
