for all denominations including Christmas for the Christians, Hanukkah for the Judaism and Kwanzaa for African-Americans. “We want to acknowledge everyone who might worship the holiday differently,” said Brewster. Middletown Springs

A day later in Fair Haven a consortium of four local churches presents their nativity scene. Deedee Bruce said the scene begins on the village green in front of the Methodist Church at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16. “We will walk with Mary, Joseph and their donkey beside the village green, then stop at the Marble Mansion for shelter,” she said. After a rebuff at the mansion, the trek continues to near the south end of the green, where young shepherds will be watching over a flock

In Middletown Springs the Community Church plans Christmas in the Park, a live nativity, followed by caroling, a Christmas tree-lighting and cocoa and treats inside the church. The church Facebook page notes that participants who are shepherds or angels in this year’s nativity are invited to rehearse beginning at 5:15 p.m. Spectators are encouraged to dress warmly, bring flashlights and their singing voices for the celebrations. For information on the Middletown Springs celebration call Rita at 802-235-2436.

Variety show Saturday in Granville

Whitehall Chamber to host Mini-Mall, Dec. 9

By Hal Brown

By Matthew Saari

Alvin and the Chipmunks headline the annual Christmas Variety Show benefiting the Granville Hook & Ladder Fire Company this year. The show, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Dec. 9 at the Hook and Ladder Entertainment and Banquet Hall, 42 Quaker St. in Granville, will feature characters from SPM Productions. In the event of a snow storm, the event will be moved to Saturday, Dec. 16. Proceeds from the show will benefit the Hook & Ladder Co. SPM Productions owner-producer Skeeter Morse said he and his wife Nancy produce the show with their stock of character costumes. Performers are generally local residents. Admission is $8 and $5 for students; kids under 8 are free. This is the fourth year for the Christmas show, Morse said. It’s also the second show this year, back by popular demand after a successful November Christmas

variety show. Admission includes treats, doughnuts, cookies and candy and a 50/50 raffle. Included in the fun this year are a visit from Santa Claus, who will be bearing goodie bags, and a fake snowball fight with artificial snow. Morse said special skits based on Christmas novelty hits “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” and “Frosty the Snowman” are planned as well. Crowd involvement often includes kids making snow angels on the floor. Morse said that is one his favorite recollections of years past. Morse handles the music and electronics end, while his wife handles costuming and choreography. Performers this year include Morse, Diana Ritchie Williams, Kathleen Wilson, P.J. Holcomb and Stanley Kasuba. For more information visit the SPM Productions Facebook page at www.facebook.com/spmshows.

A Holiday Fair and MiniMall will be held at the Whitehall Athletic Club on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event, which has been a Christmas-time staple of Whitehall for more than 15 years, was a tremendous success last year with a veritable horde of vendors turning out to hawk their wares and shoppers, estimated to number 300, attending to scoop them up for last minute Christmas gifts. “It was a big deal last year; we filled the armory with vendors,” said Holly Rabideau, member of the Whitehall Chamber of Commerce which sponsors the event. “Everyone seemed to have a great time last year.” As of press time the chamber had 37 vendors signed up out of a maximum allotment of 48. Rabideau stated she believed the last 11 spots would sell quickly. Among the vendors signed up are a LuLaRoe seller which Rabideau described as “pretty popular; a Honey and Lace vendor which markets clothing similar to LuLaRoe; “lots and lots of jewelry;” canned goods, handmade wooden toys; “all kinds of maple products;” sports memorabilia; just to name a few. With so many vendors, Rabideau said the mini-mall presents shoppers a great

If three to four dozen vendors isn’t enough for you, the chamber will be raffling off a “GIANT stuffed bear.” Tickets for said raffle are $2 a piece or $5 for three tickets. For the guys out there who would rather be anywhere but shopping, the Whitehall Athletic Club will keep its sports bar open for the hus-

Not to worry, the Whitehall Recreation Center on South Williams Street will be hosting a full slate of activities and programs to keep the kids busy so parents can drop them off before the shopping gets started. SPORTS SOURCE INDOOR TRACK

Fair Haven Slaters

The Slaters indoor track team's have a combined roster of 28 this season.

Fair Haven track teams begin with confidence Last year one of the goals that Fair Haven indoor track coach Dave Burrows laid out for his men’s team was to win the Division II State Championship. Mission accomplished. That puts the Slaters in a situation where expectations to claim back-toback state titles are running high, and Burrows feels his team is talented enough to do it. “You can win the state championship again,” Burrows told his squad before heading outside to train. “but it’s going

to take a lot of hard work. Meanwhile, the women’s team went through a bit of a rebuilding last year, but still experienced quite a lot of success. “The women had a strong showing as a team, and individually winning the state pole vault title,” Burrows said. The Fair Haven men’s team has plenty of returning competitors. Steven Reed, Will Cousineau, Devon Spaulding, and Joe Ouimet all come back for their senior years. Junior Jake Gregory is also a key veteran member.

Reed is strong in the hurdles, while Gregory is an excellent sprinter. “We expect the men’s team to repeat their hard work and determination from last year and repeat as Division II state champions,” Burrows said confidently. Nate Quesnal is a newcomer that Burrows has high hopes for on the men’s team. Josie Barber, Emily Buchtman, Adelaide Oakman, Shantel Gregory and Taylor Cormia all return to lead the women’s team. Burrows thinks that Tessa Barber could be a major contributor in her initial varsity season. “For our women’s team, it is a young team,” Burrows said. “I expect a lot of personal growth and personal records. Burrows mentioned Rice Memorial and Oxbow as two of the Slaters’ most challenging opponents. Fair Haven’s first meet will be held at UVM in Burlington on Saturday, Dec. 16.

WRESTLING

Fair Haven Slaters

Young Slaters wrestling aiming high Last season was an exciting and successful one for the Fair Haven wrestling team. The Slaters had a Junior High State Runner-up, a JV State Runner-up and a JV State Champion, as well as a 5th place in the Vermont State Championships and two 3rd place finishers in the Vermont State Championships. Fair Haven also had a senior reach 100 wins, which coach Scott Shaddock said is akin to 1,000 career points in basketball. This Slaters team is a young one, but it hasn’t changed Shaddock’s expectations. “My expectations are for my young team to give their heart and soul in every match they compete in this season,” Shaddock said. There are several key returning members this season Sam Worthing, a 9th grader, was a Junior High Runner-up at States last season. “Sam wrestling at 106 or 113 is something we have not had in several years,” Shaddock said. Dylan Lee, who had a 22-14 record at 152 pounds as a freshman, returns. Si does Isaac Voisine, another freshman who was a JV State Runner-up at 152 pounds. Jonah Goodhue, who as a sophomore and the 8th seed at the JV State Championships pinned his way through the tournament, including pinning the number ine seed to win a JV State Championship at 195 pounds Sophomore Tyler McClure will attempt to incorporate his Jujutsu background into wrestling, and sophomore Nate Eagan is bringing his experience as a youth wrestler in New York to the pro-

gram. The only senior is Gable Shaddock, who made the finals of every tournament he competed in except the Vermont States and the New England Championships Shaddock placed 4th in 2016 and 3rd in 2017 in the Vermont State Championships and holds a career record of 84-50, which is only 16 wins away from the magical 100. Fair Haven will also benefit from adding a new assistant coach, Shaddock said. “The addition of two-time Vermont State Champion Alex Ramage as a youthful assistant coach I believe will help tremendously with our team this season.” Some of the toughest opposition for the Slaters will come from state powers Mount Anthony and Essex, both Division I programs, but those teams won’t be the toughest challenge, Shaddock said. “The toughest opponent this season for these kids will be themselves,” Shaddock said.

The Fair Haven wrestling team sports a nine man roster. “These kids have talent, are tough as nails and have huge hearts,” Shaddock said. “We will win matches if we wrestle only one opponent, the wrestler directly across the mat from us.” Shaddock feels his wrestlers will bat-

tle until the end in each match. “We are a team that will wrestle each match as if it is going six minutes and knowing no matter what the score is we can end the match because we are pinners,” Shaddock said.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Poultney Blue Devils

New coach has big plans for Lady Blue Devils For three seasons Todd Hayes was the Poultney varsity baseball coach several years ago. This winter Hayes is trading in his cleats for some sneakers as he takes over as the new girls varsity basketball coach for the Blue Devils. Last year, Poultney showed a great deal of improvement, finishing with a record of 7-14, including a playoff appearance which resulted in a loss to Leland & Gray in the opening round. Several key member of that team were lost however, including guards Shelby Mack and Nadia Cox, which hasn’t gone noticed by Hayes. “We lost a lot. A lot of important people,” Hayes said. The big thing is that we have Leanna (Mason) back, probably one of the best players in the league. That’s a positive.” Mason, a six foot senior gives the Blue Devils size in the paint and experience on the floor. It is possible that she may surpass the 1,000 point mark this season. Grace Hayes, a freshman, returns at point guard after receiving significant playing time as an eighth grader a year ago. Hayes is also relying on a couple of returners who didn’t see a lot of court time last season, but will be asked to make a bigger contribution this year. “Kerah Book has improved a lot. She worked out during the summer,” Hayes said. “Her and Julia Bruno didn’t see a lot of playing time last year, but will have to step up.” Hayes also has some newcomers who

he feels can help the team out. “Montana Stomski is a freshman. She did some summer stuff with us. She had a real good summer,” Hayes commented. One of the most important goals of Hayes is to improve as the season goes on, especially in the area of fundamentals. “We are trying to improve on the fundamental stuff. That is what we are lacking,” Hayes said. “We want to get better as the year goes on and make a run at the playoffs.” Hayes understand that his squad may experience some growing pains early on. “We’ve got some good young kids that are going to have to step in. We’ll struggle a little bit, but hopefully by the end we will be better.” Hayes mentioned West Rutland as one of the teams to contend with in Poultney’s Division of the Marble Valley League. “They lost a lot, but they have a lot of kids in waiting,” Hayes said. MSJ was another team that Hayes feels will be a difficult opponent for his Blue Devils. Poultney was scheduled to travel to Arlington at the end of the first week of practice for the Arlington Jamboree. At this event the Blue Devils planned to play three 20-minute games against Green Mountain, Burr and Burton and Proctor. The Blue Devils will also scrimmage New York teams Granville and Salem. Poultney opens their season on Dec. 9 at home against Whitehall.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Fair Haven Slaters

Girls' basketball team 'sights set high' Leo Hutchins spent several seasons as the Fair Haven girls basketball coach. This year Hutchins returns to the Slater bench as the team’s mentor, but it feels like he never left. That’s because he didn’t. “I’ve been doing it for 15 years. I never got out, I was just the assistant,” Hutchins said. “I’m familiar with the kids in the program. That’s why I opted to apply for the job.” Fair Haven won its first-ever state title in 2016. Last year’s team finished at 17-6, earning a trip to the Barre Auditorium for the Division II semifinals. The Slaters lost to eventual state champion Lyndon in that contest. With five returning players, Hutchins is hoping for a return visit to “The Aud.” “Our goal every season at the start of the season is to play in Barre,” Hutchins said. “We are hoping for a nice blend of veterans and new team members.” Fair Haven is a perennial contender in Division II. Hutchins believes that an instrumental part of that is how high the Slaters set their goals. “We set our sights high,” Hutchins said. “There is no sense in setting goals that are easily achievable. You don’t

challenge yourself that way.” Seniors Jessica Brewster, Adriana Dalto and Gabby Ochs all return from last year’s Final Four team, as well as juniors Halle Coloutti and Kaleigh Brown. “We’re an athletic group,” Hutchins said. “We have kids with two or three years of experience. We are fortunate that we do have some real strong leadership.” To meet such lofty expectations a team needs to practice hard and have a good attitude. So far Hutchins loves what his team brings to the table. “They have great attitudes, a great work ethic,” Hutchins said. “They’ve come in focused and enthusiastic and you can’t ask for anything more than that.” Fair Haven will face a difficult schedule, which includes Division I teams such as powerful CVU, Rutland, Mount Anthony and Brattleboro, as well as scrimmaging Rice. When asked which opponents would be the toughest, Hutchins could not single out any particular teams. “They’re all tough,” he replied. Fair Haven opens the season at home against Vergennes on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

CHEERLEADING

Fair Haven Slaters

Fair Haven cheerleaders have new coach Former Poultney cheering coach Joey Williams took over the cheer program at Fair Haven this season, and the ingredients are in place for her to bring the same success to “Slater Nation” that she enjoyed in her hometown and alma mater. Williams began coaching at Fair Haven in the fall, so she is quite familiar with the Slater girls. Riley Taylor, Chea Ko, Makayla Woodbury, Oshen Stone, Elizabeth Camara and Cassie Ducharme all return to provide veteran experience to the squad. Stone has been named an AllAmerican cheerleader on multiple occasions. She actually cheered for Williams in Poultney her freshman year. “I have a few new girls that I just met this week that have just joined,” Williams said. Newcomers to the squad include Charity Kingsbury, Haley Manley, Isabella LeBlanc, Stephanie Gabheart, Makayla VanVraken, Olivia Scher, Madison Belden, Savanah Desrocher, Bri Clark and Lydia Aust. “Lots of potential,” said Williams. “They are hard-working, they’re willing to learn new things. They’re a good group of girls.” Any good program needs to work hard in the off season, and Williams had two cheerleaders who traveled a long way to hone their skills this summer. “I have two that went to Hawaii over the summer,” Williams said. “They went in June for a college-like camp.” The goals of Williams in her first year with Fair Haven are modest, as she

To be better than they were before.” One hurdle the Slaters will have to overcome is the lack of any boys on the roster. Williams didn’t seem concerned when asked whether having no male team members made stunting more difficult. “No, not really,” Williams replied. “It’s just a different degree of stunts that you are able to do with them.” Besides the Vermont State Championships in February, the Fair Haven cheerleaders will compete in the

The Blue Devils' cheering squad boasts three males.

Poultney sporting a 'young squad' The Poultney cheerleading squad has been known as one of Vermont’s best for decades. The Blue Devils are a threat to win every time they step on the floor at the state’s cheering competitions. Last year, Megan Franzoni took over at the helm of the Poultney program, and the transition was seamless. “We were very smooth transitionwise because I was the assistant before,” Franzoni said. “This year is really cool because we have middle school girls that cheered together for years and now they’re back together again, so I’m ready for another good year. This year’s Poultney team is a

young one, consisting of one senior, two juniors, six sophomores and seven freshmen. “I have a really young squad this year, but very talented, and they are ready to go,” Franzoni said. “I only have three that have never cheered before in their life, but two are boys that I am very happy to add, and one’s a girl from LiHigh School.” Mars, the team’s only senior, is one of three boys on this year’s Blue Devil team. Last year Franzoni had five boys on the roster. Having a strong male representation broadens the array of stunts the team can perform. “They can throw some high baskets, and for the first time ever I got them

as freshmen, so I am very excited about that. This is the last year for James, so hopefully he is going to lead them and teach them while he is still here.” The team discussed their goals on the first day of practice, and as usual the Poultney cheerleaders have lofty expectations. “We did our goal sheet the other day, the first day of practice actually,” Franzoni said. “The first goal they had is to place top three at every competition. And continue what we built last season because we pretty much have the same group together again, with the addition of a few.” Part of the reason that Poultney is

so successful is their work ethic in the off season. “We had a few open gyms and we have been doing tumbling at Peak Performance in the mall. Cara has been great with us and she is helping us out. It’s great to have cheer friends,” Franzoni said. The Poultney Blue Devil cheer squad of course will still be on the sidelines and performing routines at halftime of the boys basketball games, but the target once again will be pointed toward Saturday, Feb. 17 when the Vermont State Championships will be held at Vergennes High School. Expect the Blue Devils to be right in the hunt for the title again.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Poultney Blue Devils

Poultney hoopsters aim to get better When Bob Coloutti took over as boys basketball coach at Poultney High School last year, his goal was to double the team’s wins from the previous year. The Blue Devils did just that, finishing at 6-15 and qualifying for the Division III playoffs before falling to Windsor. Coloutti is hoping to take even more steps forward this year. “Being the first year it was a challenge at times,” Coloutti admitted. “We hit our goal, which was to double our wins. We went from three to six.” Even though Poultney suffered some key losses to graduation, most notably Trent and Justin Rogers, the cupboard is not completely empty for Coloutti. The Blue Devils also picked up Elizer Rosario, a transfer from Fair Haven. Senior guard Rob Brill, last season’s leading scorer for the Blue Devils, post player Jon Baker, a junior, and sophomore point guard Caden Capman all are in the Blue Devils’ lineup. “We lost a couple of great leaders in Trent and Justin Rogers. Then again we have the majority of our team coming back,” Coloutti said. “Our expectations are kind of the same. Just improve on last year’s win total.” Although many people noticed how improved Poultney was last year, Coloutti feels there’s still a way to go, mainly because of the team’s youth. “We’re still young. We still only have two seniors, RJ Holcomb and Robbie Brill.” Coloutti was hoping to have more involvement with the lower levels of Poultney’s program, starting with the third and fourth graders, but found that

Head Coach: Bob Coloutti Assistant Coach: Robert Coloutti it was difficult to do while coaching the varsity team and working at his fulltime job. He said he does feel, though, that the best way to build a program is to continue to show student-athletes in the school that the team is improving. Winning often breeds future success. “I think success in the program is going to spark interest,” Coloutti added. “Being successful would definitely bring us people. That’s hopefully the way it goes as we move forward.” The Blue Devils compete in a very tough Marble Valley League, but this year will move to Division IV. Coloutti feels there are still plenty of tough opponents for the Blue Devils, even after dropping down a division “I think all the usual suspects will be good,” Coloutti said. “Proctor and West Rutland. Arlington will be tough. We’re

have a home playoff game. I don’t like to have too distant goals. Let’s keep it in front of us and start the season off right. We’ll take baby steps and go from there.” The Blue Devils open their season on Dec. 13 at home against Leland & Gray.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Fair Haven Slaters

Boys basketball team seeks deep run It’s only five letters, but to the Fair Haven boys basketball program, the letters combine to make up what is on their mind at the start of every basketball season: B-A-R-R-E. The Auditorium in Barre is site for the Vermont State Division II Basketball Championships. Some schools hope to have a winning season. Others want to claim a Marble Valley League title. At Fair Haven, the expectations are always high. The Slaters’ final destination for the season is “The Aud,” as it is affectionately known. Last season coach Bob Prenevost’s team finished 15-8. The Slaters reached the Final Four in Barre, but fell to eventual state champion Enosburg in the semifinals. The talent and experience are certainly in place for Fair Haven to make another deep playoff run. The Slaters return five players, including three starters. Cameron Coloutti, Zack Murry, Drew Eddy, and Brandon Parker and Austin Ellis all return for another run. Murry, Eddy, Parker and Ellis are seniors. Coloutti is a junior. Nate Bathalon is also a senior. Another junior on the roster with Coloutti is Parker Morse, who Prenevost considers to be one of the team’s key

newcomers. Andrew Ferrara, Austin Beayon, Doug Hendee Gabe Ellis Jake Grenier and Mike Bizon round out the large Fair Haven 11th grade class. Prenevost is also excited about the contribution of sophomore Aubrey Ramey. “We are very athletic,” Prenevost said. “We are deep and have a lot of experience”. One thing that may be different about the Slaters this year is being a bit smaller. Darren Brown dominated the post last season with his 6-foot-7 frame. Brown, one of the state’s best and most highly recruited players in 2016-2107, is now playing college basketball at Oneonta State. With Brown gone fans may see the Slaters move to a more up-tempo, fastpaced style of play to compensate for their big man’s loss. As usual Fair Haven will play a difficult schedule that challenges them to get better as the season goes on and to be hitting their stride at playoff time. “Mount Anthony, Rutland, Burr and Burton, Mill River and Windsor will be some of our toughest opponents,” Prenevost noted. Fair Haven will open its season on Friday, Dec. 8, at Springfield.

BOWLING

Fair Haven Slaters

Fair Haven bowlers expect to compete Previously a club sport, last year bowling moved to the varsity level at Fair Haven. The Slaters have a long-standing tradition of producing state championship winning programs, and the bowling team wasted no time in joining the ranks. In their first season, Fair Haven claimed the Vermont State High School Bowling title, the first-ever such championship awarded in Vermont. The Fair Haven team rose from modest beginnings, having very few experienced bowlers and having to go out and recruit just to be able to field a team.

That recruitment was clearly successful. This year coach Vern Seaver’s team will have to replace several members. Six seniors graduated from last season’s championship group. Among the top returners is senior Jarred Hayes. Kerry Crossman, Katelyn Kennett and Joseph Turgeon are 11th graders back for another year on the lanes for Fair Haven. Sophomore Joey Gannon also returns. Even after losing some key bowlers, Seaver’s team is hoping to have a solid

season. “My expectation for the season is to just be competitive,” Seaver said. A newcomer who has caught Seaver’s eye this season is Alex Blackwood. There are a couple of teams that Seaver feels will provide Fair Haven with stiff competition. “South Burlington and Essex will be good,” Seaver said. The Slaters open the season on Saturday, Dec. 9, at home against Springfield. Fair Haven’s home matches will be played at the Rutland Bowlerama.
