The halls are decked ad Hildene For guests who visit Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home, December 1 through January 1, it will feel like they’ve stopped by as presidential son, Robert Lincoln, and wife Mary prepare their Manchester, Vermont home for a family Christmas, just as they did more than 100 years ago on Christmas Eve 1912. The mansion’s windows are candlelit and there’s a fresh scent of balsam amidst floral flourishes and satin ribbon. The tree has been cut and brought in from the woods, its graceful boughs hung with lovely ornaments and candles. The Boston Globe wrote, “In 1912, the Lincoln Family spent Christmas Eve here, so when the estate hosts its holiday festivities … it is to evoke that evening … Most of the greens they use to decorate are real; most are fresh, and some are dried.” The sounds of Christmas resonate throughout the home from the Lincoln family’s Aeolian player organ and its more than 900

pipes. On weekends throughout the holiday season, from Saturday, December 2 through Sunday, December 31, guests have a special opportunity to celebrate the musicality of the family who lived at Hildene as area musicians give of their time and talent to bring the family’s Aeolian pipe organ and Steinway piano to life with period music. Whether guests choose to visit some or all of the Lincoln family’s estate, touring the home, visiting the goat dairy and cheesemaking facility and boarding the Pullman palace car, Sunbeam, they will find holiday spirit aplenty. The Museum Store, located in the historic carriage barn, now the Welcome Center, is also a popular destination for holiday shoppers. The store is filled to the brim with Vermont products and items inspired by Lincoln family history, the

estate’s natural environment, gardens, and life on the farm. There is also an expanded studentfocused section with new choices for children of all ages. For nearly four decades, a visit to Hildene during the holidays has become a tradition for many families. Hildene is open From 9:30 to 4:30 daily. Admission is required and is $20.00 for adults and $5 for children 6 to 14. Members, volunteers and children under 6 are free. Those who purchase the required admission receive a sticker that identifies them to staff across the many Hildene venues. Guided tours are offered daily at 1:00 with an advance reservation for an additional $7.50 per person. Admission is not necessary for visiting the Welcome Center and The Museum Store.
