By Krystle S. Morey Woodworking… preaching… serving his country… morticianing… selling magazines and furniture… politics… Horace H. Scott has done it all – and he’s had a century to do it. Scott was born on Dec. 25, 1917 in Poultney, Vermont, and grew up in Whitehall. “We have to write 1917 now,” joked Donna Austin, Scott’s daughter. Scott remembers he got his first job when he was just 10 years old, selling magazines. “Oh, yes… with Dave (Sheldrick),” he said, chuckling. “That was my only income.” Later, Scott worked at and eventually ran a pair of businesses with his father, Harold Scott: Scott Funeral Home in Whitehall and Scott Furniture in Granville and Whitehall. He earned enough money to buy his first car: a Dodge G-Boy. The vehicle had curtains and extra seats in the back for all his friends, Scott said. “A whole bunch of us would get in that thing and go to SunnySide,” he said. “We used to go swimming where the slippery slide is.” Scott also got into politics, being elected as the mayor of Whitehall and the Whitehall town supervisor in the 1960s and 70’s. Asked why he got into politics, Scott said: “I was asked by a very important lawyer.” Added Scott: “And I wanted to eliminate the overhead pass at Comstock.” And he did. Scott called the Route 4 overpass a “death trap,” because its tight turns often caused accidents. “Because he was in the funeral business, he had to go pick people up there,” Austin said. Blasting through miles of rock on the section of Route 4 between Comstock and Whitehall to lay a flat road eliminated the need for a

curvy overpass. Also during his tenure, Scott accomplished many noteworthy feats, such as attracting businesses like Commonwealth Plywood, getting a water tower built on Skene Mountain and lobbying for a wing to be built at the Skenesborough Museum. “That was a job,” he said of bringing in the plywood company. In 1985 Scott was honored with a Liberty Bell Award for distinguished service to Washington County . ball powerhouse Argyle. Fair Haven coach Bob Prenevost has led the Slaters to victory in the holiday tourney since 2015. “They beat us pretty handily last year,” Redmond said. Prenevost attributed last year’s win to a starting player who clocked in at a towering six feet, seven inches. “It’s a new year and I’ve been hearing good things about [Whitehall’s] program,” Prenevost said. “But we need to get past Poultney. I’m sure we’re in for a dog fight the first night.” For Prenevost the holiday tourney holds special significance due to him being a teacher at Whitehall Central School for 33 years while also coaching basketball and football there. “There are kids playing there whose fathers played for
me,” he said. Fair Haven is currently 1-1 for the season with a game scheduled against Vergennes on Wednesday after press time. Both Prenevost and Redmond are hedging their bets with regards to who will come out on top this year. “This is the one year anyone can win this tournament,” Redmond said. The holiday tournament is a long standing tradition for local communities with untold amounts of spectators turning out, leaving only standing room in the Whitehall High School gymnasium. “It’s definitely one of the highlights for the local schools,” Redmond said. “I’m not sure what the number is but that gym is packed.” Ticket prices are $3 for adults and $2 for students.

Elevator to extend Pember’s reach By Krystle S. Morey The Pember Library and Museum is moving forward on a plan to add an elevator to encourage patrons of all ability levels to visit the Granville institution. Patrons will be able to enter the library at ground level and choose to stop at the first-floor library or the museum on the second floor. The Pember has an outdoor ramp that visitors with strollers and wheelchairs, for example, can use to access the library, but there is no mechanical assistance to help them access the museum on the second floor. “There’s a ramp outdoors, but that only helps people get to this floor,” Library director Ardyce Bresett said, motioning to the various bookshelves and displays in the library. Some patrons enter the library and do not realize that they cannot access the museum without climbing a flight and a half of stairs. “It’s very hard to tell them that they can’t,” Bresett said. Bresett said the elevator will ease access to the Pember’s book collection as well. “It’s not just the museum,” she said. ”There will be a stop on the first floor also.” Pember board member Bob Tatko said the elevator will enable the library and muse-
um to attract a wider range of consumers. “The ultimate goal will be to get the elevator in and provide bus tours,” Tatko said, noting it will become a revenue source for the library, secondary to the tenants who live in apartments in the nearby carriage house. The elevator will be built at ground level on the west side of the existing building. The enclosed structure will extend out 16 feet, with a glass partition between the two buildings. The proposed construction calls for a structure about 26-feet deep with a 14-by-12-foot metal canopy at the front. The design of the addition will mimic that of the existing
building. “The material on the exterior will be from the same quarry that this building came from … in Pittsford, Vermont,” Tatko said. Omya, a worldwide mineral processing company, has donated blocks of stone with duplicated coursing. “They donated as much as they had,” he said. Additional stone that Tatko said “matches brilliantly” will be purchased to finish the remainder of the project. “The aesthetic intent is to make it look like it’s always been here,” he said. Tatko said the proposed elevator will be built soon onto an existing model of the Pember’s main building and displayed in
the library. The Pember has hired an architect and a structural engineer, and it will solicit bids for construction and accept them in late January and award the project in February. “Then hopefully we can come out of the ground,” Tatko said. Construction, Tatko estimated, should take four or five months. The Pember has nearly all the money to pay for the addition, via state grants through Sen. Betty Little, the Southern Adirondack Library System and investment returns. The town and village and private donors also contribute to the Pember.

Green Mountain College donates to PES
More than 350 pounds of food was collected in this year’s fill a bus campaign.
On Monday, four members of Green Mountain College’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee delivered a collection of donated goods to the Poultney Elementary School’s principal and team leaders. The items had been taken up in a Mitten Tree drive where local community members adorned the Athletic Department’s Christmas tree with mittens, winter hats, scarves, gloves and other items.
The weeklong drive that spanned from Dec. 7-14 was a resounding success as the generous community members of Poultney and the surrounding area donated more than 50 items to the cause. S.A.A.C president Cameron Book and members Chelsea Wimble, Blake Hay and Mercedes Rideout presented Poultney Elementary Principal Kristen Caliguiri and the school’s sixth grade student
leaders Courtney Ezzo, McKenzie Ezzo and Kaitlyn DeBonis with the donated goods. “The donation is greatly appreciated,” said Courtney Ezzo. “These items definitely can help any kids who [may not have] any winter gear.” The timing of the donation will come in handy with Christmas right around the corner. The spirit of the season of giving will hopefully brighten someone’s holiday
With additional snow expected in the coming weeks, the U.S. Forest Service is looking forward to a successful snowmobile season and wants to encourage all riders to put safety first. Green Mountain National Forest officials are recommending that snowmobilers exercise caution when operating on the National Forest and all lands in Vermont this winter. GMNF officials remind snowmobile enthusiasts to heed to all gates and signs and to stay off roads and trails that are closed. Weather permitting, snowmobile use is allowed on designated trails within the GMNF for four months beginning on Saturday, Dec. 16 and ending on April 15, 2018. “We are concerned about
user safety. Patrols which are aimed at enforcing rules and regulations, monitoring trail conditions and providing visitor information will occur throughout the Forest,” said John Sinclair, Forest Supervisor for the Green Mountain and Finger Lakes National Forests. The GMNF will continue to work closely with state and local law enforcement agencies, as well as the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers to make sure that users of the trail system are respectful, responsible, law abiding, and safe. The GMNF and VAST cooperate to maintain more than 470 miles of National Forest System trails that are part of the larger statewide snowmo-
bile network. VAST is one of a few snowmobile associations in the United States that has a cooperative partnership agreement with the U.S. Forest Service. “All of these trails allow mixed uses, so people are snowshoeing, hiking and crosscountry skiing, as well as using snowmobiles. Snowmobilers should travel responsibly and yield to other users,” said Sinclair. The maximum speed is 35 miles per hour on state and federal land and Vermont has a tough Snowmobiling While Intoxicated Law that covers alcohol, as well as drugs. The U.S. Forest Service is also warning the public of the dangers associated with riding, hiking and skiing on frozen water bodies. Trail users are encouraged to be mindful of fallen trees and other hazards they may encounter. Operators must maintain control of their snowmobile while riding; keep to the right at all times, wear helmets, and stay on designated trails only. All snowmobiles must be legally registered, have liability insurance, and operators must purchase a VAST Trails Maintenance Assessment decal. Officials also encourage winter trail users to pack a flashlight, cell phone, food, and extra warm clothing in case of an emergency.
Fill the Bus campaign sets Forest Service tells snowmobilers to use caution new high for donations and Hampton, New York. In contrast to previous years, Book designated just one Friday this year to park his own vintage, blue 1972 Volkswagen Bus outside of the Poultney Shaw’s grocery store to take donations for the cause. Over the one-day period, community members donated more than 350 pounds of food which came at the perfect time with Christmas just around the corner. This year’s donation was the largest collection effort to date surpassing last year’s mark of 320 pounds of food. With the contributions from the Fill the Bus campaign the organization hopes to be able to replenish the food stores in preparation for Christmas time.
Green Mountain College students, faculty and staff joined forces once again with the local community to take part in what has become an annual event held this year on Nov. 17. Organized by GMC’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and SAAC president Cameron Book, participants came together for the third year in a row to “Fill the Bus”. The Fill the Bus campaign was an initiative started by Book in 2015 which was met with great success. The purpose of the community effort was to collect as many non-perishable food items as possible to benefit the Poultney Food Shelf which serves residents of Poultney, Middletown Springs,

Letter Breakfast with Santa a success To the editor, Poultney Woman’s Club once again hosted a successful Breakfast with Santa on December 9. For the 1980’s cost of $1.25 per meal, we served 197 hungry folks and $1.50 still purchases a photograph with Santa. We are ever so grateful to our area businesses: Shaw’s, Stewarts, Williams’ True Value Hardware, Hannaford and Prunier’s for their generous donations and we thank Dale Lott and Bob Isherwood for working beside 19 faithful club members who waitressed, baked, washed dishes, cooked eggs and poured beverages-- all the effort that goes into this annual endeavor to serve our community. It continues to be a great way to begin the holiday season. Our thanks and Merry Christmas greetings,

1 in 100,000 Orthopaedic Event Takes Coordinated Care “After a fall in my home, I left town to attend a wedding in Minnesota. A few days later, I realized it was more than a bruise and I had totally shattered my hip replacement. I trusted my Doctor, Eric Marsh from Vermont Orthopaedic Clinic enough that I decided to come home and be treated. Everything went very smoothly – from the surgery to recovery with physical and occupational therapy. We are fortunate to have a facility like Rutland Regional Medical Center right in our community. It has allowed me to regain my strength and get back to the activities I enjoy.” Jeff Wallin, Brandon, Vermont

Brown’s Auto Salvage supports Manasseh House The employees of Brown’s Auto Salvage and Premium Recycled Parts North East are again this year partnering to donate $17,000.00 to a very worth charity. This year our group has decided to give to “Manasseh House”, a 501c3 organization. Manasseh House is diverse and inclusive in keeping young men from returning to a life of uncertainty and resorting to living on the streets. It is a transitional home for young men ages 18-24, transitioning out of foster care, who want to bridge to successful employment/educational opportunities. It is a home where young men can feel safe and be mentored with successful life skills, preventing setbacks, or returning to past life circumstances of misfortune. Of current youth who have aged out of foster care: n Only 30% will have graduated high school by age 19 n 51% will be unemployed within 5 - 7
months n Nearly 60% will be convicted of a crime n 80% will be arrested n 50% end up incarcerated within 2 years n 65% are emancipate without a place to live – the size of the 7th largest city in the U.S. n 25% have experienced post-traumatic stress disorder n 33% have no health insurance n 32% will have attempted suicide Although the actual charity is based in Maryland, our group feels this affects us all, throughout the U.S. Team PRP -NE is a network of 18 auto recyclers who work together as partners to provide overnight service and top quality auto parts to body shops, mechanical repairers and the general public. Brown’s Auto Salvage is the Vermont partner.

DISCLAIMER—DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE OFFENDED BY “CHRISTMAS” December 25th! What is so special about this day? As a child I remember it being the most exciting time of the year. Thanksgiving through January 1st there were Christmas pageants, plays and parties. We sang Christmas carols, made Christmas decorations, had a tree and exchanged Christmas gifts—and it was all done in public places, public schools and home. School lessons included learning about how other countries celebrated this holiday, their customs and their culture. We learned why some do not acknowledge Christmas due to religious beliefs. In 1962 the Supreme Court ruled public schools could no longer celebrate Christmas. Some of the magic of this season disappeared. I believe we lost more than the ability to celebrate December 25th. We lost the ability to teach our children about cultural differences, tolerance, kindness, acceptance and love. One cannot deny that people tend to be more joyous, more giving and kinder to one another when Christmas rolls around. Christmas is about hope, joy and even fantasy. I have friends of other religions and beliefs and we enjoy learning about our customs and sharing traditions. December 25th is all about the spirit of the season. Whatever you believe or don’t believe is fine. But please, let others enjoy the season in their own way. The bottom line is Christmas is about loving one another and spreading kindness wherever it is needed. I hope your holiday is the best one yet. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
