FRIDAY
Independent Film BENNINGTON Ring in the New Year with a message of peace at the Oldcastle Theatre Company in Bennington. On Friday, Jan. 5, at 7 p.m., the independent film, “Rigoberta Menchu: Daughter of the Maya,” will be screened as part of the Nobel Peace Laureates Film Series presented by Peace Jam. The film documents the story of an unlikely hero, a poor peasant Mayan girl living in a remote section of Guatemala, who survived a genocide and became a voice for her people across the
world. The film shares the story of 1984 Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu. "The priests say the new dawn will be like the rain that fertilizes the soil before we begin to plant our corn. It will renew the natural cycle of life. The Mayan people will once again flourish. I believe in this very strongly. The holy men say we are entering a period of clarity. We are rediscovering our Mayan values." Rigoberta Menchú Tum was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 in recognition of her work for social justice and ethno-cultural reconciliation work based on respect for the rights of indigenous peoples in her native Guatemala. She is the first indigenous person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Tickets are specially priced for the winter at $7 to $12. Oldcastle Theatre Company,

Food & Wine Festival ALBANY The Albany Chefs’ Food and Wine Festival will take place on Thursday, Jan. 11, through Saturday, Jan. 13, to benefit the arts community of Albany. The 2018 Festival is inspired by the partnership with the Indonesian Diaspora Network - USA. Traditional Indonesian wayang was the inspiration for this year's image. The central figure of the image is a well-known wayang, Arujuna Janoko, peeking through the batik flowers and embracing the Festival signature wine bottle. This year's iconic bottle has a subtle nod to American artist Andy Warhol. The way-
ang playfully sneaks the bottle through the flowers portending to the fun and merriment to come as we join our cultures to present the 9th Anniversary Albany Chefs' Food & Wine Festival: Wine & Dine for the Arts! Events throughout the weekend include Grand Tastings and Seminars, a New York State Beer Pavilion, Slider Slams, Battle of the Bartenders, and a Grand Gala Reception and Dinner featuring the food, wine, arts and culture of Indonesia. The Albany Chefs’ Food and Wine Festival will take place at the Hilton Albany, 40 Lodge Street Albany, New York. Tickets and schedule of events: albanywinefest.com

Art Exhibition
GLENS FALLS LARAC in Glens Falls presents a special exhibition, “Honoring Eugene Fairbanks: An Artist Through & Through,” from Jan. 12 to Feb. 16. An opening reception will take place on Friday, Jan. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. Eugene Fairbanks was born in Granville, raised in West Pawlet, Vt. and returned to Granville to live until his passing last October at the age of 82. Fairbanks was a multi-talented painter, author and illustrator and his passion for the arts colored every aspect of his life. In addition to teaching art, he painted, sculpted, acted, illustrated, and authored poetry, plays, and books. He has had a long career of exhibiting his art in gallery and art shows throughout the Northeast. Fairbanks would sum his life in one simple word: Artist. The exhibition is open to the public. Live music will be provided by Mark Piper and light fare is included. Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council, 7 Lapham Place, Glens Falls, N.Y. Information: 518-798-1144. Website: larac.org
LAKE GEORGE Ceramics by Regis Brodie and paintings by Leslie Yolen will be exhibited at the Courthouse Gallery of the Lake George Arts Project in Lake George from Jan. 13 to Feb. 15. An Opening Reception will take place Saturday, Jan. 13, from 4 to 6 p.m. Regis Brodie works in porcelain and stoneware and is an Emeritus Professor of Art at Skidmore College. His colorful, surface-layered ceramics are the culmination of his training as a painter and sculptor. His sculptural forms are elegant and classical. The surface painting, drawing, and textural treatment on the other hand, is out of the Abstract Expressionist and PostModernist Schools. He enjoys “the interplay that is created between the refinements of the form and the spontaneously decorated surface.” Leslie Yolen has worked predominantly in clay until recently, when encaustics became her favored medium. Her paintings on wood panels are created using brushes, torches, knives, and scraping tools. Her series of work for this exhibit is titled “Treescapes,” inspired by her lifelong fascination with trees and “the way they frame our world in different light and through different seasons.” The Courthouse Gallery is located at the side entrance of the Old County Courthouse, corner of Canada and Lower Amherst Streets, Lake George, New York. Information: 518-6682616.
