As long as Codie Bascue maintains his No. 1 ranking throughout the next two weeks, he will earn a spot on the US Olympic bobsled team and compete in the 2018 Winter Olympics to be held in South Korea.
Awaiting the Olympic nod By Matthew Saari The Lakes Region’s own Codie Bascue stole national headlines in November when he grabbed a gold medal during a World Cup bobsled race in Lake Placid. The day proved monumental not only for Bascue, as this was his first
World Cup gold, but also for the U.S. bobsled team, which hadn’t won a two-man bobsled race since 2009. Since then Bascue, a native of Whitehall, and the U.S. bobsled team have been busy competing in four additional World Cup races in

Bascue returned to Whitehall for the holidays but was quickly back on the road, or rather in the air, for further competition in Altenberg, Germany; then St. Moritz, Switzerland. All of these races ultimately determine which bobsledders will represent America during the upcoming Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. “Selection to the Olympic team as a bobsled driver is based on personal ranking through points you gain by

Where does Bascue fall in all this; just what are the odds that he will represent America at the Olympics? “Right now I am the number-one ranked driver in the nation,” Bascue said. “I just need to hold that spot these next two weeks and I will be fine.” A place on the Olympic team will be the apex of Bascue’s bobsledding career; the culmination of decades of hard work and dedication. “I started bobsled when I was eight years old,” Bascue said. “My grandfather, who used to do the sport recreationally, started a junior bobsled

program at the Whitehall school.” Being an Olympian wasn’t always at the forefront of Bascue’s mind. During his childhood the fast-paced sport of bobsledding was more akin to a hobby than a serious competitive venture. “I think about my junior year of high school bobsled turned into something more in my mind,” Bascue said. “Until then it had been a hobby or just another sport of mine and then I realized I could take it even further, so I decided that is what I wanted to do.” The passion exhibited for the sport by Bascue’s grandfather initially drew the younger Bascue in. “I think what drew me to the sport was that he did it in the past and hearing his stories and how much he loved the sport,” said Bascue. “I wanted to experience that for myself.” The rest is, as they say, history. Since going pro Bascue has accumulated so many medals and accolades that he’s going to need multiple trophy cases. Ring in the New Year with a message of peace at the Oldcastle Theatre Company in Bennington. On Friday, Jan. 5, at 7 p.m., the independent film, “Rigoberta Menchu: Daughter of the Maya,” will be screened as part of the Nobel Peace Laureates Film Series presented by Peace Jam. The film documents the story of an unlikely hero, a poor peasant Mayan girl living in a remote section of Guatemala, who survived a genocide and became a voice for her people across the world. The film shares the story of 1984 Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu. “The priests say the new dawn will be like the rain that fertilizes the soil before we begin to
plant our corn. It will renew the natural cycle of life. The Mayan people will once again flourish. I believe in this very strongly. The holy men say we are entering a period of clarity. We are rediscovering our Mayan values.” Rigoberta Menchú Tum was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 in recognition of her work for social justice and ethno-cultural reconciliation work based on respect for the rights of indigenous peoples in her native Guatemala. She is the first indigenous person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Tickets are specially priced for the winter at $7 to $12. Oldcastle Theatre Company, 331 Main St., Bennington, Vermont. Crazy 8’s is an after-school program designed with the goal of helping kids enjoy recreational math through concepts embedded in their favorite activities. It was developed and funded by the Bedtime Math Foundation, a private nonprofit organization dedicated to putting the fun and discovery back into learning math. Their website explains, “We’re nothing like your usual math club. With Crazy 8’s kids will build glowin-the-dark structures, crack secret spy codes, and play games like Toilet Paper Olympics.” Interested students in grades three through five must pre-register and plan to attend all eight
sessions. Call the library at 802468-5574 or email them at castletonfreelibrary@gmail.com to add your child to the list, leaving the child’s name, grade, and contact information. Students should be picked up at 5 p.m. at the library. The library will also provide a small snack. Transportation arrangements and health concerns will be clarified during registration. Jones, children’s librarian and teacher, will be the coach for this session of the club, with help from interested Castleton University students. The program and all materials are free.
Want to know more? Here’s the plan for the first few weeks: Glow in the Dark Geometry. Make geometric shapes using glow sticks. Lay out the sticks to make mystical repeating patterns. Then flick off the lights to see it all glow. Let’s Get Loud. Experiment with water and straws to create different sounds. Build a working flute out of milkshake straws. Finally, find out exactly how loud you are, down to the numbers. Flying Marshmallows. Send marshmallows flying using popsicle sticks and rubber bands. Figure out what positions work best, then measure the flight to prove it. For less structured messing around with geometry, Lego Saturdays will resume Jan. 13. This is a drop-in time, open to all, to build with friends or alone during Saturday morning hours from 10 a.m. till noon. A Keva Plank building challenge will also be added.
