Author Talk Northshire Bookstore in Manchester presents author Theo Emery’s “Hellfire Boys,” an explosive look into the dawn of chemical warfare during World War I. The event will take place on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 6 p.m. Largely forgotten in the confines of history, the development of the U.S. Chemical Warfare Service in 1917 left an indelible imprint on World War I. Drawing from years of research, Theo Emery brilliantly shows how World War I quickly spiraled into a chemists' war, one led by the companies of young American engineers-turned-soldiers who would soon become known as the "Hellfire Boys." As gas attacks began to mark the heaviest and most devastating battles, these brave and brilliant men were on the front lines, racing against the clock-and the Germans-to protect, develop, and unleash the latest weapons of mass destruction. Theo Emery is a journalist who has written for the New York Times, the Associated Press, the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, the Tennessean, and other publications, and has appeared

Lights Out GRANVILLE After six weeks of illuminating Granville, the holiday decorations around the village are about to come down

for the season. This weekend is the last chance for folks to check out the lights show in Veterans Memorial Park, which is synchronized to music on 89.3 FM. Lights are choreographed to music each night during the holiday season, every hour on the hour, from 5 to 9 p.m. Two different shows play each evening – one on the even hours, the other on the odd. Volunteers from the school, community and the village’s holiday decorating committee will begin removing the lights on Jan. 15, Martin Luther King Day. The displays and trees in Veterans Memorial Park were lit during the annual tree-lighting ceremony on Dec. 1. Swags, wreaths and lights on village streets, bridges and light posts made their debut the day before Thanksgiving, on Nov. 23. Folks from all around the area traveled to Granville, a village of about 2,500 people, to see the impressive lights displays. Village officials said this year’s “Granville’s Hallelujah” theme was a hit. About 2,000 people ventured to see the 2017 tree-lighting, which was held in coordination with the Slate Valley Museum and the Pember Library and Museum’s First Friday events. A holiday committee made up of village trustees, town officials, community members and business leaders gets together to develop the theme each year. Those same volunteers, who start planning the holiday lights shows in July, are tasked with untangling and testing lights, setting up displays around town, organizing the tree-lighting event and taking the lights down once the season comes to a close. Great Meadow Federal Credit Union pledges $7,500 each year to

sponsor the annual lights in the park.
