The community is being asked to support the Blue Devils by making a donation to the American Cancer Society. Funds raised will help the society fund lifesaving cancer research, provide free programs and services, access to 24/7 information and support through 1-800-227-2345 and www.cancer.org, and lodging assistance through the Hope Lodge program. Tuesday’s event is a student panel to be hosted at the Booth Lounge from 12 – 1 p.m. The panel will be facilitated by Ebony Kirkland of Black Lives Matter Vermont. There are many forms of oppression in the world and communities are striving to break free from them. Come hear what students have to say about the oppression they face at a predominately white institution

The three-day-long event wraps up Wednesday with a Dare to Dream Open Mic night at the coffee house from 7 – 9 p.m. Join in celebrating the legacy of Dr. King. Performers will have the opportunity to share their work as it relates to the theme, freedom from oppression. Oppression comes in many forms, unite and recognize the oppression that exists, fight to diminish oppression and restore power back into local communities. Sign up when you arrive.
Folks from all around the area traveled to Granville, a village of about 2,500 people, to see the impressive lights displays. Village officials said this year’s “Granville’s Hallelujah” theme was a hit. About 2,000 people ventured to see the 2017 tree-lighting, which was held in coordination with the Slate Valley Museum and the Pember Library and Museum’s First Friday events. A holiday committee made up of village trustees, town officials, community members and
business leaders gets together to develop the theme each year. Those same volunteers, who start planning the holiday lights shows in July, are tasked with untangling and testing lights, setting up displays around town, organizing the tree-lighting event and taking the lights down once the season comes to a close. Great Meadow Federal Credit Union pledges $7,500 each year to sponsor the annual lights in the park.

Poultney Historical Society receives Climate Control Grant The Poultney Historical Society received a $12,325 grant to install a new climate control system in the 1896 East Poultney Schoolhouse. This Cultural Facilities Grant through the Vermont Arts Council has enabled the historical society to install four energy-efficient heat pumps throughout the building to control temperature and humidity year round. The purpose of the project is to integrate a reliable and cost-saving climate control system that will help protect the building itself, but most importantly will ensure the preservation of the extensive collection of Poultney artifacts and archives that have been entrusted to the society’s care. Excel Plumbing and Heating in Mendon installed the system
in late November. They mounted one wall unit in each of the two classrooms on the first floor and two in the large second floor auditorium. All of these rooms house the full range of Poultney’s historic collections containing thousands of objects ranging from clothing, books and genealogical records to photographs, glass negatives, and farm equipment. A 60,000 BTU outdoor condenser unit that powers the system was pad-mounted outside behind the Schoolhouse. The 1896 East Poultney Schoolhouse, a contributing building in the East Poultney Historic District, is a 2 1/2 story Queen Anne-style building that was used until 1966 as a public grade school. Excel took great care in running the

Two plays at Paramount Break away from the January blues and let ART entertain you. On Jan. 18 - 20, Vermont Actors’ Repertory Theatre will present two short plays by Steve Martin at 7:30 p.m. in the Brick Box of the Paramount Theatre, 30 Center St. in Rutland. The two shows are “Zig-Zag Woman” and “The Wasp”. In the “Zig-Zag Woman”, pushed to amazing lengths to relieve profound loneliness, a waitress magically separates herself into three parts to facilitate her quest for a man. In “The Wasp”, the characters live in the fractured landscape of 1950’s suburbia. A prototypical white Protestant family exists in a dark limbo of expectation and routine. People surround Mom but she is deeply alone, Dad speaks in delicious platitudes, and the
children fear anything new. Producing Director of ART Sandra Gartner said, “January is our company’s time to produce something different from the rest of our season. When director Garrett Robin came to me with the idea of presenting the two one-acts by Steve Martin, it was the perfect pairing for our winter slot”. The cast for the two shows feature Maya Reddington, Richard Reed, Paul Burroughs, Lennon Philo, Lily Kelly, Nicole Jane and Nanci Gordon. Director is Garrett Robin and Stage Manager is Matthew Eckler. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased in person at the Paramount Theatre Box Office, at www.paramountvt. org, or at the door. Photograph exhibit on display Jan. 16 An exhibit of more than 45 hand-colored photographs of Minnie Griswold’s Pawlet home will be on display from Jan. 16 through March 31 at the Vermont Folklife Center. After Griswold passed away in 1952, her sons locked up their mother’s house in Pawlet and left all her belongings in place, unaltered. 30 years later, Pawlet documentarians Susanne and Neil Rappaport would enter the home at the invitation of one of the brothers, Charlie, and go on to produce a collection of hand-colored photographs of Minnie’s home. Today, nearly 30 years after Susanne and Neil entered the home, this rarely seen collection of more than 45 hand-colored photographs comes to the Vermont Folklife Center as a new exhibition entitled, Up Home. Susanne and Neil, both now deceased, titled the collection “Up Home” for an exhibition at Bennington College in the mid1980’s—the hand-colored photographs were then kept in storage, untouched for more than 30 years. Clues to Susanne and Neil’s intentions can be found in their writing about the collection. Inspired by a small photo of Griswold discovered in the house, Susanne wrote: “I look at this snapshot of Minnie, which was taken in 1923 when she was 49, just seven years older than I am now—and I know her. She speaks to me from her eyes and slight smile, a shyness around her mouth and sharp wit—I yearn to hear her voice. How do I know her? How do you get to know someone who died 20 years ago?” Neil Rappaport recounted the circumstance though which they were invited into the house for the first time: “Charlie Griswold, Minnie’s 85-year-old son and his recent bride, Bea, chose to have their portrait made at Charlie’s boy-

hood home. After the picture, Charlie took us into the summer-warmed old house, where the dim light gradually gave way to an image of a past preserved: everything was in its place, untouched for years. Charlie cranked the Victrola and we all sat on the overstuffed couch and rockers listening to John McCormack sing ‘Over There,’ smelling the sweet and sour aromas of age in the house. Animated beyond his usual shy reserve, Charlie led us through his mother’s rooms, allowing us a glimpse of how she lived.” With Charlie’s permission, Neil later returned many times the following winter to photograph the rooms and everyday objects of Minnie’s life with his large format camera. On his approach to documenting the house he wrote, “The idea that people inhabit their objects and rooms had been suggested to me by all of my portrait work, and at Minnie’s I was testing it in depth. I searched for the most specific evidence of her experiences: a box filled with shrouded truths of the losses of husband and first-born child, piled over with boyhood accomplishments of surviving sons, spoke of the poles of emotion...” In the spring, Susanne returned to the house with Neil’s black-and-white prints and for months carefully handcolored the photographs— always from life, always working at Minnie’s home. On her process, she wrote, “I
sought the stillness and quiet concentration of my long working days, the spring turning into summer, the light changing in the house, thinking all the time about how to more accurately bring Minnie’s colors to the photographs and how to improve my ability to see everything, every detail, in the pictures.” Below the surface, Up Home invites an examination of the intersection of documentary and artistic representation. “The photographs are beautiful, arresting, and mysterious,” said Ned Castle, Vermont Folklife Center Vision & Voice Gallery Curator. “Beyond the prints themselves, and what they can tell us about Minnie Griswold, the exhibit offers the unique opportunity to contemplate the complexity and nuance of the documentary exercise.” Castle continued saying, “These photographs challenge our notion of an objective past by offering a view into the past that is both untouched, and touched. We encounter Minnie’s home as it was, left unaltered, on the day she died—and yet we do so through a medium that, by its very nature, requires we acknowledge the subjective hand of both Neil and Susanne.” Neil even seemed to contemplate Charlie’s role in the creative process: “Gradually, another truth began to emerge as I returned again and again

Exhibit Continued from page 4 to the house: time had not been randomly stopped at Minnie’s home. Charlie had done something analogous to making a photograph: on the day of his mother’s death, 30 years ago, he had snapped the shutter closed, completing the image, and nothing had changed since! This act of reverence was so specific and powerful, that one could only wonder at it and wish to know more about such a Mother.” “Who is Minnie Griswold?” remains the central question and fascination of the exhibition Up Home. Susanne writes in closing, “It took Neil about a month to
make these images, and it has taken me almost a year to complete the colorings. It is clear to me that I have done my part for Charlie above all else, wanting him to know that in this process I have come to understand his act of reverence and the closeness he has to his Mother. I hope these photographs extend her spirit and his meaning and devotion, as I have given myself expression.” The Vermont Folklife Center will host a public reception and gallery talk with complimentary locally sourced food and drink, including beer, wine, craft cheeses, produce and more on Thursday, Feb. 1 from 5 – 7 p.m. This exhibit was made possible with support from the Vision and Voice Gallery under-
writers including the Rotary Club of Middlebury, Cabot Creamery, the Vermont Community Foundation; the Vermont Arts Council and by our many generous supporters across the state. The Vision and Voice Gallery is free and open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.. The Gallery is ADA accessible on the first floor (rear entrance) of the Folklife Center headquarters located at 88 Main St. in Middlebury. The Vermont Folklife Center’s mission is to broaden, strengthen, and deepen our understanding of Vermont; to assure a repository for our collective cultural memory; and to strengthen communities by building connections among the diverse peoples of Vermont.

Nick Neddo exhibit opens in Poultney Jan. 16 The Feick Arts Center is pleased to announce its first exhibit of the new year. “The Wildcrafted World of Nick Neddo: Merging Craft and Art” opens on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at Green Mountain College in Poultney. The reception, including refreshments, music, and a chance to meet the artist will take place on Friday, January 19 from 5-7pm. Neddo’s nature scenes are beautiful in their own right, but even more evocative when you learn that he forages and crafts his own pens and inks, paintbrushes and paints from the ecosystem around him. Because he has spent days and weeks making his tools and materials before he begins making his artwork, he has a deeper knowledge and connection to the landscape he portrays. Neddo’s current body of work at the Feick explores the interconnectedness of life and

the relationships its creatures have with one another. As Neddo explained, “Rather than anthropomorphize the wildlife that is depicted, the work invites the viewer to empathize with the wildness inherent within themselves.” Neddo, a sixth generation Vermonter, grew up exploring the fields, forests, and wetlands of his bioregion and became dedicated to the study of the natural world, Stone Age technology, also known as primitive skills and creating art. The mission and artwork of Neddo is a great match with Green Mountain College’s focus on sustainability. “Nick’s work will be a great inspiration to the campus and community,” said Christine Schultz, director of the Feick. “He’s one of those artists who make you stop and re-see the world around you, then rethink how you’re living in it.” “The Wildcrafted World” exhibit runs from Jan. 16 to Feb. 13 Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m., or by appointment. Admission is free. The Feick Arts Center is located at Green Mountain College in Poultney. For more information call 802-287-8398 or visit the art center’s Facebook page.

Emergency Medical Responder Course offered Poultney Rescue Squad is launching a membership drive to gain resourceful and energetic men and women 16 years or older who want to experience responding to emergency calls and serving the community. Applicants need no prior experience or training to join Poultney Rescue Squad. Training will be provided for community members that are interested in becoming members of PRS. Poultney Rescue Squad offers a Driver Training program that is for individuals that don’t have the desire to provide emergency medical care to patients. The Driver Training program takes about three months to complete depending upon the availability of the individual going through the program. An Emergency Medical Responder course is being offered beginning Monday, Jan. 29 and ending April 14. The course will meet weekly on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6-9 p.m. at the Poultney Rescue Squad building. The course fee is free for Poultney, Middletown Springs and Hampton residents. Fee for students outside of the Poultney Rescue Squad coverage area is $100. Class size is limited to 12 students. The Emergency Medical
Responder course is Vermont’s entry level for Emergency Medical Service certification. Although an EMR is not intended or authorized to be the sole patient care provider in an ambulance, EMR’s serve as a vital link in the chain of the EMS health care team. The primary focus of the EMR is to initiate immediate lifesaving care to critical patients who access the emergency medical system. Course participants will learn the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide lifesaving interventions while awaiting additional EMS response and to assist higher level personnel at the scene and during transport. Poultney Rescue strongly encourages people that are interested in becoming an EMT to attend this course first. An EMT course will be offered in the Fall of 2018.. Now in its 47th year, PRS is a community-supported, non-profit organization that provides emergency and ambulance service to the towns of Poultney and Middletown Springs as well as the Hampton, New York area. PRS provides compassionate, life-saving services to the community. If interested in signing up for the EMR course, please call Poultney Rescue Squad at 802-287-5575 or email Beth Winter at bmwinter@rrmc.org.

New life for your old Christmas trees After New Year’s Eve, the decorations come down and Christmas trees typically get dumped. But Merck Forest & Farmland Center in Rupert, Vermont has found a sustainable way to recycle those trees and put them to good use. They are inviting people to drop off their trees which will be chipped and used as mulch for their blueberries. This is the first time Merck Forest has offered this treerecycling service. “My wife and I were recently wondering what we should do with our Christmas tree and I thought of all the blueberries at Merck that needed mulch,” said executive director Rob Perry. They figured there were probably a lot of people who were wondering the same thing and they were right: a Facebook post on Merck’s page promoting the tree drop-off had been viewed by more than 6,000 people soon after it was published. Merck is always thinking in terms of sustainability. They will even track “food waste” from groups who visit and making sure it gets composted. “The choices we make determine our ecological future,” said Perry. He said he is pleased with the virtual response to the tree recycling so far and hopes that will translate into a lot of mulch.
Merck Forest is seeking used Christmas trees for plant mulch. Merck Forest has more than 100 blueberry bushes which will be mulched sometime in February, depending on the snow pack. “Soft woods, especially with their greenery, make good mulch for blueberries,” said Perry. Those who return to Merck in the summer will see the “fruits” of this labor as the blueberries are available as a U-pick.
It’s a win-win for everyone. Trees to be recycled are to be completely stripped of stands, tinsel, lights and other decorations. Merck Forest and Farmland Center is located at 3270 Route 315 in Rupert. Stop by the visitor’s center for directions on where to leave your tree. For more information, call 802-394-7836.
