Whipple City Festival June 16 & 17 The Greater Greenwich Chamber of Commerce will present the 25th annual Whipple City Festival on Friday, June 16, and Saturday, June 17. The festival kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday with a parade starting at the Kmart Plaza and marching east to Mowry Park along Main Street. This year’s theme is “The Circus Comes to Town.” After the parade, visitors can look forward to enjoying a night of live music and great food. The fun continues in Mowry Park the next day, with the addition of artisans and commercial vendors. Saturday’s events kick off with a 5K-10K race. More than 200 runners are expected to line up at 8:30 a.m.
to stretch and limber up before the starting gun goes off. Children are also invited to put on their running shoes and participate in the kids’ fun run. For those preferring not to endure shin splints, there will be free horse drawn wagon rides. Every year the Whipple City Festival grows, offering more vendors and activities. This year, for example, there will be a human foosball tournament. As for music, there will be bands galore, including an encore performance by a local band, Eastbound Jesus. Children will enjoy ball toss games, inflatable rides, laser tag and face painting, with many more activities that are already planned or in the

works. For the heritage-minded, historical reenactors from the Revolutionary War, Civil War and World Wars I and II will be on hand along with representatives of local historic associations. Speaking of history, where does the name “Whipple” come from and why is the festival named as such? The Village of Greenwich was first known as Whipple City, named for Job Whipple, its first successful industrialist. The Whipple City Festival honors Greenwich’s history and the way of life in a rural community. For the latest information as well as vendor and race registrations go to www.greenwichamber.org.

Tractor Parade a holiday favorite Nothing announces the holidays are upon us better than…a twinkling tractor. That’s right. Santa’s sleigh and famous flying reindeer have been pushed aside in favor of a relatively new, yet already beloved, Greenwich tradition – the Greenwich Lighted Tractor Parade. The parade made its debut five years ago and has quickly grown in popularity. Last year there were 75 festively decorated and lit tractors parading throughout Greenwich, garnering many “ooo’s” and “ah’s” from the estimated 6,000 people snaking the streets of the village. Each tractor, which includes everything from “monster” tractors to lawn tractors, has to have at least 1,000 lights to enter the parade. This year organizers – the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce – expect even more tractors and more people, earning the parade the well-deserved reputation as one of Washington County’s “must-see” events. The parade will take
place Saturday, Nov. 18, starting at dusk, starting at the Greenwich Central School parking lot
and traveling to Church Street and Main Street, proceeding east to the end of Main Street. To prevent traffic congestion, organizers close off village streets a half hour before the parade begins, and spectators are
12 • Manchester Newspapers • Greenwich/Easton Community Guide 2017
encouraged to arrive early. Visitors can park on side streets, leaving the main streets open for the massive parade. Changes implemented a couple of years ago, such as establishing detours around the village, have been successful in facilitating traffic movement. Handicapped parking was also established to aid spectators. The cost of registering a tractor for the parade is $20. Registration forms will be available in September. Comfort Food Community goes beyond basics Comfort Food Community is changing the way people think of food pantries, going beyond a bag of canned goods and offering residents fresh, healthy produce. It’s also changing the ethos of food pantries in general, shifting from that of a Band-Aid for hunger to working on eliminating food insecurity by rallying the community to work and serve together. It all began in January 2014, said Devin Bulger, executive director, when a number of Greenwich residents met to plan the formation of a non-profit organization which would take over responsibility for running the Greenwich Food Pantry. Established in 1986, the food pantry was doing a good job, but Bulger said it was clear there were more needs in the community. “There were many more things to do to eradicate food poverty, he said. Bulger, who grew up in Greenwich, spent time after graduation in Colorado working with the chronically homeless. It was then he began seeing the importance of getting to the root causes of homelessness and hunger. “I always felt we were in a reactive role, just trying to pick up the pieces,” Bulger said, realizing that without community ties, no program will ever truly help residents get back on their feet. So upon his return home, Bulger had a

And the heart of a rural community such as Greenwich is, what else, its farms. “One of our greatest asset is the farms in the area. And it was one of our missed opportunities,” Bulger said. Working with the Agricultural Stewardship Association in Greenwich and Capital Roots in Troy, Comfort Food Community now regularly gleans produce from participating area farms within a 10-15 mile radius. During the peak of the harvest season—August to November—Comfort Food averages about five to 10 gleaners a week. While it is an investment in time to be in the fields rescuing the food farmers can’t get to, Bulger said it is time well spent, as the gleaning not only provides fresh produce, it strengthens community
ties and gets people more invested in helping others. Gleaning, though, is just one of the many Comfort Food Community initiatives that have been implemented in just a short time. In 2014, the organization became a member of the Regional Food Bank, thus, allowing more access to food, Bulger said. The same year, comfort food moved to the St. Joseph’s Parish Hall on Hill Street. “It’s a great space. Open and spacious and easily accessible,” Bulger said. Comfort Food also organizes a children’s backpack program in the Greenwich schools and has started a Greenwich Community Garden. Always looking to reach more people with healthy food, the non-profit opened a satellite food pantry in the Cossayuna Fire Department in 2015. Opened on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., the loca-

tion sees about 20 families on a weekly basis. About 80 families come to the Greenwich flagship. For those who can’t drive to either Greenwich or Cossayuna, no problem. A grant last year helped Comfort Food buy a truck and create its Mobile Food Pantry, bringing good food to folks who can’t get out. The traveling food pantry goes beyond Greenwich and makes stops in communities such as Whitehall, Fort Ann and Granville. Bulger and his team, who he credits with all the good work that has been done thus far, aren’t resting on their laurels. There is still more to do, Bulger said. One of Comfort Food Community’s long-term goals is to establish educational programs relating to food and nutrition. For more information, call 518-538-3522.
Chamber of Commerce Come join us! For over 25 years, the Greater Greenwich Chamber of Commerce (GGCC) has been providing services to the business community and the general community of Southern Washington County. The GGCC was organized in April of 1990 as an outgrowth of a Village Downtown Greenwich business organization, and has since grown to nearly 200 members from Washington County, Saratoga County and the Capital District. By working to support, promote and attract business in our local area, the GGCC strives to improve the quality of life in our region and improve and enhance the local business economy. There are a number of benefits to being a member of the GGCC, some of which include 24/7 easy access to business information on our Member Directory page: http://www. greenwichchamber.org/directory.asp, and direct links to business websites. We also offer referrals to member businesses only and participate in many regional advertising programs to spread the word about the Greater Greenwich
area and its many offerings. The GGCC is also able to offer quality CDPHP health insurance plans to business groups with more than one person in the business, a dental plan through Delta Dental and Bay Optical Vision Care plans. The support of our members and that of other area businesses allows the GGCC to provide a number of great community events which have become “classics” of Southern Washington County. Join us June 16 & 17 for the annual Whipple City Festival, now in its 25th year, and the Halloween Parade in October, or the most recent addition to our community events, the now annual Holiday Lighted Tractor Parade. Now in its 5th year, this event has surpassed every expectation in popularity, enjoyment and beauty, and has become a wonderful way to ring in the holiday season! This year the parade will be on Saturday, November 18, 2017. To learn more about the area or to become a member, call the Greater Greenwich Chamber of Commerce office at (518) 692-7979 or visit our website at www.greenwichchamber. org.
Prep for success.
