Autumn Leaves Car Show Sept. 24 When the leaves begin to turn bright red- and amber-colored in Granville, that means the Autumn Leaves Car Show – and fall – are just around the corner. Each year, the show draws hundreds of classic and custom car enthusiasts to the Granville Little League Complex on Glen Street in the village on the last Sunday of September. The 32nd annual event, hosted by the Granville Area Chamber of Commerce, is set for Sunday, Sept. 30. More than 700 people attended last year. “They come from all over,” said Denise Davies, the chamber’s corresponding secretary. “There are locals that come, but there are people from the Albany area, Vermont … and there are some who come from three or four hours away.” More than 200 cars are displayed each year. “There’s a good mix,” Davies said. “It’s classic cars, it’s new cars, it’s hot rods … it’s all different types of vehicles.” Those wishing to display their car, motorcycle or truck in the show can enter from 8 to 11 a.m. on the day of the event at a cost of $20. Participants will receive a slate dash plaque, donated by a local slate company; a goodie bag; two door prize tickets; a gas card drawing ticket; and a 2017 Autumn Leaves Car Show commemorative
The Autumn Leaves car show is a popular event in Granville. T-shirt. After registering, cars are sorted into 26 classifications. A first- and second-place vehicle are chosen from each. Participants judge which cars will be recognized in each category, except for their own, choosing the first- and second-place vehicle in each category. “It’s really a nice feature,” Davies said, regarding the show participants determining the winning vehicles. Other awards including best of show, most chrome, best paint job, furthest distance traveled, most likely to get pulled over and more are also be awarded. “There’s a lot of opportunity to come home with some nice recognition,”

Davies said. On the day of the event, show cars enter the complex via the Prospect-Glen Street entrance. Spectators can view the cars from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. They enter from the North Quaker Street entrance. Admission is $3, with youths 15 and under admitted free. Each spectator receives one ticket that will be entered in the drawing for door prizes. Davies said the door prizes each year are “excellent.” Prizes up for grabs at past events included an LG 49-inch 4K ultra-high definition smart TV and a Kindle Fire 10.1 tablet. The show also features auto trivia, food and music. Food, beverages and ice cream are sold by local
organizations including Stewart’s Shops, the American Legion and the Rotary Club. Music is provided by local artist Steven “Skeeter” Morse, and each year there is an auto trivia challenge, which will test attendees’ knowledge of car accessories, motors and more. Several chamber of commerce members will also set up information booths at the event. Past vendors included Warner’s Auto and Tyler Outdoor Services. “It gets better each year. We do different things,” Davies said. For more information, visit granvillechamber. com.

Chamber promotes Granville The Granville Area Chamber of Commerce exists to “advance the prosperity of the Granville area, promote the commercial interests of the business community and to support civic, cultural and educational pursuits.” The chamber currently organizes four key annual events that attract different groups of people, benefitting area businesses and enhancing the lifestyle of local residents. The Town-Wide Yard Sale takes place the weekend after Mother’s Day in May. It is not only a social event for friends and neighbors, it draws new visitors to the community. In September is the Autumn Leaves Car Show, the largest fundraiser for the chamber. This year was the event’s 31st anniversary and it featured 210 show cars and drew more than 600 spectators from throughout New York and Vermont. The chamber also participates in the largest event of the year, the Lighting of the Tree and Santa’s Visit in the Park as part of the First Friday
holiday events in December. “It has grown into an incredible event,” said Davies. The chamber provides wagon rides

throughout the evening as well as the gifts that Santa hands out during his visit. “We had 370 children who came and received a gift this year,” Davies said. Businesses that were open during the event did well, with more than 2,000 visitors in attendance this year. A new ongoing effort, The Quilt Project, encourages groups, businesses and individuals to purchase a 4-foot by 4-foot outdoor panel to paint and create their own “piece of a quilt” to display outside their building or home. The goal is to have enough eventually to promote a “quilt trail.” In addition to events,

What the historic plaque reads.... The Village of Granville, N.Y. incorporated in 1885, traces its roots to “Bishops Corners,” a pioneer settlement begun here in 1780 by John Champion Bishop, his wife Abigail Reynolds, and their children. The Bishops purchased 2,000 acres within the presentday bounds of the village and at these corners built their home and trading post. Within two decades they had established an ashery, an iron foundry and a grist mill and helped to organize Granville Friend’s Society. By 1798, “The Corners” numbered 480 residents.

Franklin Pember's gift to Granville The Pember Museum of Natural History is a bit of a surprise for firsttime visitors. Tucked away on the second floor of the Pember Library in Granville, it’s a window into a local man’s 18th century predilection for natural history. Rows and rows of updated turn-ofthe-century display cases house flocks of stuffed birds and animals. mens such as a pileated woodpecker in 1862. The woodpecker is still in the collection, still on display, and in remarkably good condition after a century or more. Pember was aided in his largess by being a remarkably astute entrepreneur. He had a fur business collecting American furs and selling them in Europe. He purchased orange groves near Riverside, California, in the late 1880s. He invested in oil property in Ohio in 1890 and in farm acreage in Minnesota. He was a civic leader in Granville, the president of the Farmers National Bank from sometime in 1906 until his death in 1924. He was a stockholder in the Granville Electric and Gas Company and a board member of the Granville Telephone Co. His fur business and a side business selling egg specimens abetted the museum collection. His personal and business contacts facilitated trades with other collectors that benefitted and expanded the museum. Pember and his wife maintained a museum room in their home prior to the natural history museum opening. Pember proposed building the library and natural history museum in 1908. The building was formally dedicated in 1909, opening on March 13. Pember was the curator of the museum and president of the library and museum until his death. He was known for appearing in formal dress in the library and showing children and other visitors around the collection.

Discover the Pember Nature Preserve Not everything Pember is indoors. The Pember Nature Preserve, donated to the Pember Library and Museum in 1979, encompasses 125 acres of forest, wetland and fields on both sides of Black Creek, a tributary of the Battenkill. The Pember Nature Preserve is dedicated to providing a refuge for the region's native wildlife and plant species. The preserve has more than two miles of trails marked by a system of blazes and wooden signs. Visitors to the marsh walk on elevated walkways and a footbridge over Black Creek. An observation platform at the edge of Black Creek allows peoplae to observe wetland wildlife. In 1987, the Granville School District deeded the Porter Schoolhouse to the Pember Library and Museum for use as a nature education center. The one-room schoolhouse has been restored and has been used as a classroom since 1990. The preserve is located eight miles south of Granville on
Route 22 in Hebron. It has two entrances, one on Route 22 halfway between Salem and Granville at the Porter Schoolhouse, the other north of the school on South Grimes Hill Road just west of Route 22. The preserve has a number of native species such as wild turkey, Great Horned Owls, river otters, wood ducks, Canada geese, black bears, bobcats, moose, white-tailed deer, black-capped chickadees, woodcocks, ruffed grouse, wood turtles, painted turtles, garter snakes, ribbon snakes, coyotes, green frogs, spotted salamanders and red spotted newt. Eight nature trails are available for use at the preserve, which is open year-round from dawn to dusk. Individual walks range from a quarter-mile to almost two miles, varying from easy strolls to moderate hikes. Trail maps are available at both entrances to the preserve and at the Pember Museum.
Changing the world, one student at a time" “Changing the world, one student at a time” has been the theme of accomplishment embraced in the Granville Central School District, while “It takes a village to raise a child” is a proverb recognized worldwide. What do these two concepts have in common? Both are dependent upon strong community partnership and support. Given the size of our school, the breadth of opportunities that we, as a community, are able to offer the students is very impressive. The mission of any public school is clear. It is, in brief, to fully develop the social, emotional, academic and physical strengths and talents of the student body for the betterment of our society as a whole. To be successful

Several businesses have opened their doors in providing real work experience to students in the life skills class. These are just a few examples of the amazing partnership between the school and community. During this season of gratitude, the District would like to thank all who are committed to the growth and development of every aspect of our school and community. All are invited and encouraged to keep up the great things our students and future leaders are doing by visiting our website www. granvillecsd.org and/or following us on Twitter at granville_csd.

Haynes House of Hope looks to future Since welcoming its first resident in January 2010, the Haynes House of Hope, a comfort care home for the terminally ill in South Granville, has become an integral part of the Granville community. Haynes House has served more than 60 residents and their families in these past eight years, and in the last year, was at maximum capacity with two residents most of the time. Through many fundraising events, memorial donations and grants, Haynes House has been able to financially survive, even while other similar homes have not. The support of the Granville community has been a key component of the house’s success, especially with the dedicated group of volunteers who care for the residents. To provide a better experience for Haynes House residents, the Board of Directors has commissioned plans to create a sunroom from the existing porch. Estimated cost of the project is $23,140. Fundraising for this major improvement is well underway, with a major grant received from the Charles R. Grant applications have been submitted for the remainder of the funds, so that construction can begin in the spring . Braymer monument to get face-lift It was during a quiet family hike when Dan Williams realized the poor shape the Braymer Hill monument was in. On a piece of villageowned land on the west side of Route 22 in Granville, the 30-foot-tall white concrete monument hasn’t been upgraded for years. Williams, who retired as village DPW superintendent last year, said he enjoys the 15-minute hike up Braymer Hill. “I just hike up there to go to the monument,” he said, noting he’s only made the trip three or four times this year. Williams hiked to the monument with his son and step-daughter back in May. “That’s when I noticed the shape that it was in,” he said. When asked why he wanted to fix the monument, Williams said: “The history of it.” He added: “It looks like a good project.” Some “much-needed” maintenance, Williams said, is required. He plans to repair and repaint the concrete monument, remove trees to restore the view of the monument from the village, and install signage on the trail to the monument. “The monument is made out of concrete blocks, so there’s a lot of normal cracking, but there are two major areas where the concrete blocks are starting to
disintegrate. They are going to need to be rebuilt somehow,” he said. Williams will repair the roof to the monument, which has been leaking and causing the concrete to crack. “The water is getting through the roof and down into the concrete blocks. That’s what’s breaking them,” he said. The monument isn’t in jeopardy of falling over – yet. “It’s more manicure work than it is structural that needs to be done,” Williams said. Before he can tackle the monument repairs, Williams said he’ll need to clear and mark the trail leading up to the edifice. “It needs to be opened back up. Nobody has been able to see it for a number of years,” he said, noting that when some trees are cleared, “you’ll be able to see it from pretty much anywhere in the village.” The trail is open for all hikers, but adding necessary signage, Williams said, will help point them in the right direction. He looks to get started on the trail in November. The rest of the work will be completed in the spring. Williams and his family will pay for the upgrades. He, his son, wife, daughterin-law and father will help with the work. The monument was built in 1926 on the land of

Dan Williams is repairing the Braymer Monument. Albert “Bert” Braymer. The 18-acres that the monument is on is owned by the Village of Granville, so any maintenance of the monument and trail grooming had to be approved by the village board. The Braymer family donated the land to the village in 2010. News regarding planned upgrades to the Braymer Hill monument spread quickly – even beyond Granville. The story made its way to Maryland, Virginia, Texas and more, garnering much interest along the way. Mary Anne Braymer, Braymer’s granddaughter who lives in Colorado, even
caught wind of the project. She was ecstatic when she heard about Dan Williams’ plans to repair the weathered monument. “What a nice thing to do,” Braymer said, summarizing her reaction to the story. “It’s all the more remarkable that he is doing this by himself. It’s really a cool thing,” Braymer said, regarding Williams’ retiring from the village and still wanting to pursue the monument repairs. Williams and his family planned to fund the entire project, but have since received assistance from the late Bert Braymer’s family. Braymer and her sisters, Susan, Nancy and Barbara, sent a donation this fall to Williams to help defray the cost of materials needed to repair the monument. The donation amount was not specified. Braymer said her family donated the land to the village to “preserve the land and the monument.” Braymer said she was trilled once she learned about Williams’ project because she was unsure whether the monument would be taken care of. “When we donated the land – when we settled my mother’s estate – to the village, the village didn’t want the responsibility of maintaining the monument,” she said. “They were very clear when they accepted the donation.”
