Poultney teacher Emily Hollister is a ‘life-changer’ By Matthew Saari Emily Hollister is a lifechanger. Enough so that Hollister’s colleagues Janet Chandler, Dale Spring and David Adams as well as Poultney community member Robert Isherwood nominated Hollister for the
National Life Group’s Life Changer Award. “I was completely shocked and humbled,” Hollister said. “I still am.” The 27-year-old teacher at Poultney High School was nomiEmily Hollister nated for her hard
work and dedication but more importantly for working every day to instill these values in Poultney’s students. “It’s all about the students,” she said. “Encouraging them to be positive members of society.”
Since coming to the Poultney school district four years ago, Hollister has certainly not settled for the minimum, taking to her role as an educator with verve and gusto. In addition to teaching Spanish to grades eight

Schaff Continued from front page said, he was involved in a physical altercation with another man at the pub. Witnesses said Schaff ’s glasses had been broken in the fight, but he didn’t suffer any serious injuries. Three days later, Schaff ’s cell phone was found in an abandoned vehicle at Loomis Trucking near the state line, but no additional evidence was found. “Even though this case is coming up on four years old, it still seems to be pretty fresh in people’s minds,” Wilkins said, noting that his team continues to get tips regarding Schaff ’s whereabouts. Wilkins said he and his team “continue to kick the bushes and pound the pavement to make sure this case doesn’t go any colder than what it is.” The case has had a “steady pace to it, which is unusual,” Wilkins said. On Monday and Tuesday this week, Wilkins and his team were out in the field interviewing people regarding those tips. “We just got some new leads about two weeks ago that we are currently following up on,” Wilkins said. Last fall, a Vermont State

Raffle tickets are available at the RRMC Gift Shop, or by calling 802-747-3634. In addition, there will be a varied basket auction at Spartan Arena on Jan. 26. Since the inception of the annual Pink the Rink event, close to $60,000 has been raised in support of the program.
The game starts at 7 p.m. Cost of admission to the game is $7 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. “We appreciate the ongoing partnership and collaboration with Castleton University and the Women’s Hockey program in support of the Breast Care Program,” said Linda McKenna, Director of Oncology, at Rutland Regional’s Foley Cancer Center. Added McKenna: “We look forward to cheering the Lady Spartans on Friday, Jan. 26.”
Police SCUBA Team searched a quarry on York Street Extension in Poultney for “specific evidence” relating to Schaff ’s disappearance. “We still have some work to do on that,” Wilkins said. Because of the large size of the quarry and winter weather, Wilkins said his team was unable to search the entire quarry. “It’s going to take a significant amount of manpower and time to do that,” he said. Divers plan to revisit the quarry in the spring. Because of the location of the Granville bar, so close to New York-Vermont border, state police in both states have worked together since Schaff disappeared. “It is still very much unknown if this is a Vermont case or a New York case.,” Wilkins said. “We are working it together.” He acknowledged that it is unusual for a missing person case to still be active after four years. “Unfortunately, police, because we get busy with other things, you move onto other cases,” Wilkins said. Some of his team has been pulled off the Schaff case to work on other cases, including homicides, “…but this case sits right here on the bookshelf right next to my desk, so that we don’t forget it,” Wilkins
said. When new leads come in, Wilkins said, his team does their best to follow them up immediately. “We don’t let them sit, we jump right on it,” he said. “If they continue to grow legs, we keep hitting them.” Wilkins has said in the past that he has “a passion for these types of cases – complicated cases.” He is also a father of three and said he “can’t imagine losing a child in any way, shape or form.” He is so invested in finding Schaff, who would 27 now, that he offered up his personal contact information to Schaff ’s parents. Wilkins talks to Schaff ’s mother, May Winchell, of Fair Haven, Vermont, two or three times each week. “Even though it’s been four years … it’s not any easier for her,” he said. “When you talk to her, you can just hear the sadness in her voice. She just wants him to be found one way or the other.” Tips and information about Schaff ’s disappearance, Wilkins said, are most valuable to solving this case. Anyone with leads should call the Vermont State Police Rutland Barracks at 802-773-9101 and ask for Wilkins. “Information is, at this point

Castleton Library events Free supper at Dorset Church Jan. 24 of Berneray, and finally travelled over the sea to Skye for some shorter hikes and fairy glens. Back on the Scottish mainland, the Great Glen Way, a long-distance path, cuts through the Highlands from Fort William to Inverness, following the Caledonian Canal connecting four lochs (including the home of Nessie, cousin to our own dear Champ). This journey was a gift, in part, from a very fit daughter (Ivy) to a rather unfit mother (Jan, who nonetheless loves to hike), to prove that with careful planning, such a hike was quite possible for a 64-year-old. The presenters hope to encourage others who might be nervous about such an undertaking. They will share advice about essential packing for long walks, why trailside canal boat pubs are worth a stop, how to steel oneself for the odors of a “drying room”, and what to watch out for when crawling through a dark tunnel at the Well of the Seven Heads (hashtag clan wars, hashtag arachnids, etc.), among other things. The program is free and open to all. Refreshments will be provided.
Celebrate Scotland at Castleton Free Library on Rabbie Burns Night, Thursday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. This travel program will feature photography, anecdotes and walking tips presented by Ivy Marr and librarian Jan Jones from their experiences in the Scottish Highlands and Outer Hebrides. By foot and ferry, bus, coach and steam train, they wandered byways along Loch Ness, climbed footpaths into the hills, and explored the wild beaches and mountains of the Western Isles. The program will be informal, with time for questions about trip planning, walking long-distance paths, booking hostels and other lodging - and of course, recitation of a few Robert Burns poems. The trip included two themes: an island exploration inspired by the popular Lewis Trilogy murder mystery novels by Peter May (The Blackhouse, The Lewis Man, and The Chessmen), and a long-distance walk (about 80 miles) following the length of the Great Glen Way. Jan (the librarian) planned much of the former, and Ivy, an experienced longdistance walker, the latter. The travelers arrived in Stornoway by ferry from Ullapool, staying first in guest houses with lovely black pudding and smoked salmon breakfasts; Berserker stout and wee drams at the fire (after visiting the Butt of Lewis, the northernmost tip, claimed to be the windiest place in Scotland). Later they stayed in a thatched blackhouse converted to a hostel on the rocky shore

Game Continued from front page This year the Slaters will be competitors on the court with Otter Valley, but they are working together off the court to beat cancer. The public is invited to attend the Coaches vs. Cancer night to cheer on the Slaters and support cancer awareness and research funding that helps save lives. boy’s team, with games beginning at 5:30 p.m. for JV and 7 p.m. for varsity. Fans are encouraged to wear navy, the color representing both teams, to show support for the Coaches vs. Cancer initiative. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society, the official sponsor of more birthdays. The game will raise funds to help support American Cancer efforts to help people stay well, get well, find cures and fight back. In 2015, the Fair Haven Union High School girls’ basketball teams supported a Coaches vs. Cancer game with Poultney High School, raising $1,500. In 2016, the team raised $5,000 and raised
$6,031.71 in 2017 for the cause during events held at Fair Haven High School. “We at Fair Haven Union lost a much-loved music teacher, Fran LaPlaca, to the disease,” said Coach Leo Hutchins. “It’s a cause we all connect with, and a fight we can win. Team members and the Fair Haven community are going the extra mile to raise funds and awareness, and we’ll be showing off our success during the Slaters vs. Otters game.” Activities Coordinator, Ali Jones, said, “Coaches vs. Cancer is one of the most important games because it allows our students to play for a higher cause rather just winning or losing. It
also showcases what our students do extremely well, which is striving to help others and use their talents to make the world around them a better place. It also allows two competitive schools to join together for a positive cause.” “The Fair Haven game will help create cancer awareness and raise funds to find cancer’s causes and cures and provide programs that ease the burden of the disease for people in need,” said Brian Casalinova, American Cancer Society community manager of special events. “Our hope is that one day, students will never have to worry about the threat of cancer.
This is an opponent we can–and will–beat.” Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches that empowers basketball coaches, their teams and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. The program leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of basketball coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs.
ly in the gym to exercise. “The emotional growth of the girls is completely evident and has made a difference in their desire and ability to dedicate themselves to their academic work,” said a Life Changer press release. Hollister is also an advisor to the school’s Interact Rotary Club and National Honor Society in addition to spearheading Red Cross blood drives,
holiday toy drives and more. “Emily’s dedication to her school knows no bounds,” Spring said in the press release. “She says ‘yes’ to any challenge. To her peers and to her students, she is an outstanding individual and we are fortunate and grateful she chose Poultney.” In the classroom, Hollister’s enthusiasm for her subject matter is contagious, spreading to her students. Not only does this lend to the students better grasping the material but to an increased enrollment rate. “Within her first year at Poultney High School, she increased her class size by 100 percent,” the press release read. “Hollister’s classroom activities are informative and
engaging and her delivery is bright and inspiring.” Although Hollister, who resides in Shaftsbury, has a full workload teaching at Poultney and leading the charge on a multitude of extracurricular activities, she also teaches Spanish at Green Mountain College. Every year educators from across the country are nominated by colleagues and community members for the Life Changer Award. Ideal nominees “make a positive impact in the lives of students; enhance their school or district; demonstrate exemplary leadership at the school; possess a proven record of professional excellence; show a commitment to building a nurturing environ-
ment; and adhere to the highest moral and ethical standards.” “Basically anyone who works in the school can be nominated,” Hollister said. “It’s along the general line of having a positive impact on students.” Of the pool of national nominees, 10 will be chosen for the award. In addition to the award, winners are given $3,000, to be evenly divided between the awardee and their respective school district. Of those 10 winners, the top five will be flown to Bermuda in May for the Grand Prize finale, with one being named Grand Prize winner and four Grand Prize finalists. “Not that I’m expecting to get that far,” Hollister said with a chuckle.

The Pawlet Public Library located at 141 School St., will host an educational presentation by AARP Vermont Fraud Watch Network Coordinator, Elliott Greenblott, on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 1 p.m. New frauds and scams seem to crop up daily. Identity theft, investment fraud, Medicare fraud and imposter scams rob millions of Americans of their hard-earned money. Last year, 20 million people were the victims of identity theft alone. That’s one person every two seconds. Data breaches in the past year alone have put nearly one-half of the population at risk. AARP’s Fraud Watch Network is arming Americans with the tools they need to spot and avoid fraud and scams so they can protect themselves and their families. The program seeks to educate the public, serve as a watchdog, and

Others dismiss the loss as something that happens and a lesson for the future while still others fear retribution from the person defrauding them if the incident is reported.” Increase your understanding of this national and regional issue by attending this one hour program at the Pawlet Public Library. Twig Remembers Frank Chizmar Back home in Fair Haven, Vermont, 14 miles west of Rutland, I had 17 years of columns in the Lakes Region Free Press titled “Twig Remembers” in which I would write about friends who had passed on. In them I would write about how the person related to each other during our long friendships. It gave me a place to write some very special stories that were often very funny. I plan on dropping one in the Buzz Word now and then. Here goes: Twig Remembers Frank Chizmar. Late 1940’s, local electrician Bud Beach sent a letter to the University of Chicago asking for a top-rated electrical student to help bring power to most of the houses in Fair Haven and Poultney (population 2,500 each). Bud Beach set up John with the local electric company (Petelle
Electric). Best move John ever made was getting his brother-in-law Frank Chizmar to come and work. Frank had grown up on a farm back in the 1930’s and 40’s. Now this was when farm kids could fix anything with a roll of baling twine and some coat hangers. If a tractor broke down, they’d take it apart, find out what was wrong, and find a way to fix it. John was a very bright bookkeeper and businessman, and Frank worked in the shop patching and fixing all kinds of machinery and electric motors for all kinds of people from all over Rutland county: $50 versus a $500 new unit— the word was out. Now that old farm boy had a hankering for pies (apple, blueberry, it didn’t matter), square dancing and the ladies. Now going into people’s houses to fix things could get you a
lot of those last two. So, I’m working at Poultney’s Williams’ Hardware and Frank would come in looking for weird pieces of hardware that would help him with a project. When he gathered his stuff, he would tell me how he would bend it and shape it and by tapping a couple of holes and inserting a couple of thumb screws, he would fix this old girl’s favorite oven to make her pies. One day this very attractive lady who was brand new to the area, was in her late 50’s, but she was all there. In conversation she told me that her husband had passed on five years back and she had stayed on in Pennsylvania and was lonely thinking of him in that house, so she decided to move to Poultney, Vermont, where she had gone to college. Then she asked if I knew someone who could fix her favorite
stove as they had stopped making them and it was perfect for her baking but the door had grown crooked and she couldn’t get it to close completely. I gave her Frank’s phone number and told her he was fair and honest. I also mentioned he might want to sample a very special pie she’d be baking that day. A couple days later Frank stopped in to tell me about this very special Pennsylvania Dutch apple pie that she flavored with spiced blueberries-“best I ever had”. He shopped for a few things, and then as he headed out the door, he stopped and said, “Hey, Twig, thanks” and gave me a big wink of the eye. To this very day, I don’t exactly know what that wink was for – or do I? I guess I’ll let you people figure that one out. But don’t forget… “Twig Remembers”.
Snowshoe for the Cure Jan. 21 Komen New England Snowshoe for the Cure will be held on Sunday, Jan. 21 at the Sun Bowl, of presenting sponsor, Stratton Mountain. Snowshoe for the Cure is a family-friendly event with fun for everyone, including a kids’ snowshoe dash. Snowshoe for the Cure allows Komen New England to support thousands of local families through funding for critical breast care services and groundbreaking research. Participants can race or walk as part of a team, or as an individual, or volunteer, donate, or become a supporting sponsor to help Komen reach its Bold Goal of reducing breast cancer deaths by 50 percent in the United States by 2026. As in past years, Snowshoe for the Cure will kick-off at Stratton’s Sun Bowl Base Area at 9 a.m. with a friendly, competitive 3K Snowshoe Race, with prizes awarded to the top three female and male racers and the top three survivors. There are two non-competitive Snowshoe Walks, a 3K and a 5K. There is also a free Snowshoe Dash for the five year old and younger set, so be sure to bring the kids. No snowshoe experience is required. As a matter of fact, snowshoes aren’t even required; free loaner snowshoes will be available from official snowshoe partner Tubbs Snowshoes, Inc. while supplies last. All participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt. Individual and team fundraising is encouraged. Local sponsor Von Bargen’s, located in Stratton Village, has donated an amazing prize for the Top Overall Fundraiser: an 18-karat yellow gold ‘Tubbs’ style snowshoe charm, designed and hand made in their Vermont studio, on an 18-karat yellow gold, 18-inch chain equipped with a lobster clasp. Additional fundraising awards will be made to individuals raising $250 or more for the event. The top fundraising teams will be recognized as well. There will be Komen merchandise for sale, as well as a raffle with gift certificates and Vermont products. New this year is a Packet Pick-up Party to be held at Black Bear Lodge at Stratton Mountain Resort, Saturday, Jan. 20 from 4-7 p.m. Preregistered participants can pick up bib and t-shirt; new registrations will be taken. Donations may be dropped off. Please note, all donations received by 6 p.m. on Saturday count towards fundraising awards. There will be appetizers, music, and a cash bar. Do plan on coming to meet fellow snowshoers. To register online through Friday, Jan. 19 visit www. komennewengland.org . To volunteer or get more information call Linda at 802-362-2733.
