To celebrate, the Green Mountain State is offering free fishing to both in- and out-of-state sportsmen who do not have a Vermont state fishing license on Saturday, Jan. 27. Water bodies statewide are fair game on Free Ice Fishing Day. Not sure how to ice fish? No problem. Vermont Fish & Wildlife staff are hosting a free Ice Fishing Festival at Lake Bomoseen State Park in Castleton. Aspiring ice fishermen of all ages can learn how to enjoy this unique and popular type of fishing.

They’ll have a chance to show off their skills at a series of Vermont’s 115 upcoming ice fishing tournaments. Here’s a look at the local events to get hooked on:

While cleaning out the attic of his family home on Slyboro Road in Granville, Dennis Darius discovered two relics – and he can’t figure out what they are. The cryptic pair is made of wood and features several reeds that are tightly bound together between two large rods, one larger than the other. They appear to be hand-made. Darius, 73, hypothesizes the artifacts may be wooden reeds that belong to a musical instrument or some sort of filter for an older piece of machinery. “I am completely buffaloed on what they are,” he said. “The only identifying marks appear to be some Roman numerals,” said Daruis. On the end of one of the pieces, “IIXXX,” which is the Roman numeral for 32, is scratched into the wood. “I discovered them in my attic while I was doing a little

Darius’ grandparents bought the property in 1938 and he and his wife Catherine bought it from them in 1965. The items were found in the attic of the second section, built in the 1860s. There used to be an old organ in the original part of the home, Darius said, noting that the pieces may have belonged to that. Darius, after asking family and friends, is still at a loss. He hasn’t looked to the internet yet. “It’s one of these mysteries that’s like a UFO,” Darius said. “There’s a possibility that they could be 150 years old.” These mystery artifacts aren’t the first interesting find Darius has pulled out of his attic. He found an old book, which was then donated to the Fort Edward Historical Society; a comb; old newspapers; and a pair of scissors. “We’re always looking for old stock certificates that date back to the 1900s that are worth

Coaches Vs Cancer games set in Fair Haven Fair Haven Union High School will once again be joining in the fight against cancer by sponsoring Coaches vs. Cancer basketball games. This year the Slaters will be competitors on the court with Otter Valley, but they are working together off the court to beat cancer. The public is invited to attend the Coaches vs. Cancer night to cheer on the Slaters and support cancer awareness and research funding that helps save lives. The games, which take place at Fair Haven Union High School gymnasium, will be held on Thursday, Feb. 1 for the girl’s team and Friday, Feb. 2 for the boy’s team, with games beginning at 5:30 p.m. for JV and 7 p.m. for varsity. Fans are encouraged to wear navy, the color representing both teams, to show support for the Coaches vs. Cancer initiative. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society, the official sponsor of more birthdays. The game will raise funds to help support American Cancer efforts to help people stay well, get well, find cures and fight back. In 2015, the Fair Haven Union High School girls’ basketball teams supported a Coaches vs. Cancer game with Poultney High School, raising $1,500. In 2016, the team raised $5,000 and raised $6,031.71 in 2017 for the cause during events held at Fair Haven High School. “We at Fair Haven Union lost a much-loved music teacher, Fran LaPlaca, to the dis-

Team members and the Fair Haven community are going the extra mile to raise funds and awareness, and we’ll be showing off our success during the Slaters vs. Otters game.” Activities Coordinator, Ali Jones, said, “Coaches vs. Cancer is one of the most important games because it allows our students to play for a higher cause rather just winning or losing. It also showcases what our students do extremely well, which is striving to help others and use their talents to make the world around them a better place. It also allows two competitive schools to join together for a positive cause.” “The Fair Haven game will help create cancer awareness and raise funds to find cancer’s causes and cures and provide

Twig Remembers Bill Eaton I knew his mom and dad first. Old George was always sitting on the front porch and you knew he always had a drink on hand. Every time we’d drive up the street, dad would toot the horn. If Stella was out front, he would give her a toot, too. When my dad passed on, I continued with toot and yell, and Stella told my aunt “I love that Twig, he always toots”. I first met Bill as we both had summer jobs at Maplewood Dairy. His oldest son Steve was about 15 and was my helper for the summer. Bill taught social studies at MSJ in Rutland and was the baseball coach. Mike Barsalow and he rode to Rutland togeth-
er and became best friends. My favorite Bill Eaton story happened on a Sunday when I pulled in my yard coming from the store. Bill came out of the shortcut from his house on the next street through Kandi Ramey’s driveway. He knocked on my car window and said “Twig, can you do me a favor? I’m supposed to be reading a script at the Catholic Church and I slept over. Could you give me a lift?” He got in and I said, “Yes, but it’s going to cost you-one good turns another.” “What’s the deal?” he asked. I said, “I want
you to read a sermon from Twig, it’s from the Bible”. “Oh, great!” he replied. In my deepest Bible voice I said, “Jesus called Moses forth” and then in my softest comedic voice I added that Moses slipped on a banana peel and came in second. Then I heard, “Brother Twig, I don’t think I’ll be able to do that one”. And then I told him that old Charlie Daley told me that when I was hanging around with his son Mark sixty years ago. You get what I mean… “Twig Remembers”

presents life in Vermont from the time when the earliest European settlers arrived in 1761 with only the bare necessities to the early 1800s when Vermont craftsmen achieved a level of sophistication rivaling Boston and New York. This gallery showcases over 85 major pieces and smaller items from the Museum’s extensive historical collection of over 30,000 objects. “We hope that these objects will serve two distinct purposes. First, to share with the public the deep, rich collection we maintain here at the Museum; Second, to tell fascinating stories of the early life in Vermont.” states Robert Wolterstorff, Executive Director of the Bennington Museum. Housed in the former Decorative Arts Gallery, this 866 square foot space includes beautiful pieces representing the sophistication achieved not long after Vermont was first settled. Visitors are also encouraged to explore Gilded Age Vermont, Bennington Modernism, Battle of Bennington along with the Church Gallery, the original Museum dating to 1855. In the adjacent galleries through March 13 is the Annual Student Art Show bringing artwork of the region’s elementary, middle and high school students to the Museum in a display ranging from whimsical projects by the young students to more advanced work of older students. Visitors can explore the artistic development of children as they address a particular topic or by age grouping. Ceramic work, paper sculptures, and more complement collage, pastels, and pen and ink drawings. The changing exhibitions are varied, very exciting, and showcase art, history, and innovation. Be sure to visit often to see what else the Museum has planned. Watch too for great events such as presentations by the Bennington Historical Society, Music at the Museum presenting Music through the Centuries for Flute and Harp on March 11, and other great events like the Museum’s Spring Party on April 13, and Tattoo 3 on April 28. Bennington Museum is located at 75 Main Street (Route 9), Bennington, in The Shires of Vermont. The museum is open 10 am to 5 pm Thursday through Tuesday, closed Wednesday February 2 through May. It is wheelchair accessible. Regular admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and students over 18. Admission is never charged for younger students, museum members, or to visit the museum shop. Visit the museum’s website www.benningtonmuseum. org or call 802-447-1571 for more information. Bennington Museum is a member of ArtCountry, a consortium of notable art and performance destinations in the scenic northern Berkshires of Massachusetts and southern Green Mountains of Vermont, including The Clark Art Institute, Williams College Museum of Art , Williamstown Theatre Festival (20 minutes away); and MASS MoCA (25minutes away).
