Fair Haven scouts clear snow from fire hydrants By Krystle S. Morey When it comes to fire, time is of the essence. That’s why local scouts have chipped in to help clear the snow and ice that often surround fire hydrants this
time of year. When it snows, Cub Scout Pack 18 and Boy Scout Troop 18 in Fair Haven take to the streets to help make sure hydrants are easily accessible to first responders. “Our fire department is
volunteer,” said Joe Donaldson, Cubmaster. “They’ve got to be ready to go at a moment’s notice no matter what, so anything we can relieve off from them is obviously a help. And we’ll do whatever we can to help our
community.” Chief Jim Heller of the Fair Haven Fire Department said the scouts’ gesture helps out him and his crew greatly. “They tell me fire generally

The effort started as a way for scouts to earn their annual community service hours. “The boys like to get outside and play in the snow. ” They don’t always like to sit behind a cub scout book and learn,” Donaldson said. “It gives them a chance to get outside and do some stuff with their fellow cub scouts and boy scouts … and they earn community service time for it.” As a pack, the cubs are required to complete communi-

This year, the Rupert department’s enthusiasm has spilled over into two teams, “The Old Farts” and “The Young Farts.” They compete just as hard against each other as they do other rival teams. Benson VFD and Middletown Springs VFD are already organized and ready to bring home the prize. Will Pawlet retain the title? Will Wells VFD come back to grab 1st place as they did at the 1st Annual Woodchuck Festival? Fair Haven Boy Scout Troop 18, which has nine scouts, also helps keep hydrants clear. “We just do a quick shovel out around them and make sure they’re cleaned out,” Donaldson said. Heller said that many Fair Haven residents “adopt” the
hydrant near their homes, which also helps firefighters. “We have some residents in Fair Haven that do that on a regular basis,” Heller said. The Fair Haven Department of Public Works and firefighters also help keep hydrants clear. “Our public works department does clean them out when they get time, but they’ve got roads to plow and sidewalks to clear and a lot of other things

Fire Chief Ryan Pedone said fire crews had to enlist the help of the village’s department of public works for assistance in clearing around and opening frozen hydrants. Sometimes, Heller said, private plowers surround hydrants with snow, which is also problematic. “They basically bury them with snow from driveways and such,” he said. Heller recalled cases where he and firefighters had to dig
hydrants out while on a call. “Again, time is of the essence and wasted time is time you can’t get back,” he said. “That’s why help from the public or an organization that wants to go out and volunteer to do that … they’re definitely fulfilling a need.” Donaldson said of his scouts: “These boys are having a good time and learning good skills.” The Fair Haven Fire Department has about 17 members. “The job getting done, and getting done safely and effectively, is what’s important,” Heller added.

Quilters musical next Saturday Quilters, the musical, is coming to Dorset on Saturday, Feb. 10 The show will be held at the Fellowship Hall, United Church of Dorset and East Rupert, located at 143 Church St. in Dorset. Quilters begins at 3 p.m. Don’t miss this tender, moving play about a pioneer woman and her daughters. Quilters skillfully blends a series of interrelated scenes into a memorable musical. Each scene is introduced by a quilt square or block symbolic of life’s passages. During each block, the actresses skillfully transform into many different characters whose stories depict the lot of women on the prairie. Combining music, dance and drama, Quilters captures both the harsh challenges and the abiding rewards of frontier life with vivid dramatic intensity. In addition, local quilters will have some of their quilts on display, providing a wonderful backdrop for this show. Busy that day? In all, there will be two more opportunities to see the show so mark your calendars. On Saturday, March 10 Quilters will show at the Brandon Inn, 20 Park St.,
Brandon and on Saturday, April 7 the musical will be held at the College of St. Joseph Library, 71 Clement Rd., Rutland. Quilters is being presented by a consortium of Rutland Area women who have been involved in all aspects of local school and/or community theater for decades. Director Jennifer Bagley and Music Director Rita Lane have assembled a cast of talented actresses with beautiful voices including: Marsha Cassel, Melissa Chesnut-Tangerman, Julia Doiron, Mikki Lane, Maureen Sullivan and Tegan Waite. Quilters is a play that has long been a passion of theirs, not only because some are quilters themselves, but because it tells the universal story of the struggle of pioneer women on the frontier. And although women may no longer be on the frontier, many still face daily challenges of poverty, abuse, and discrimination. General admission will be by freewill offering. All profits will be donated to the Rutland County Women’s Network and Shelter - now renamed the New Story Center. Help everyone come together to create a quilt of compassion to warm today’s needy families.

Lincoln’s birthday deadline looms for essay competition The deadline for area students’ essays to be considered for a the Hildene Lincoln Essay Competition is President Lincoln’s birthday, Thursday, Feb. 12. Each student’s essay and application must arrive by mail or by hand at Hildene on or before the deadline. The concept of what it means to be a patriotic American can sometimes lead to heated debate. In his time, President Lincoln was viewed as both a traitor and a patriot. Many Americans, particularly those in the southern and border states, believed his actions to abolish slavery threatened their economic livelihood and flew in the face of the Constitution and their idea of American freedom. Others came to view the president as the epitome of patriotism because he
wished to preserve the Union at all costs and because he knew the Union could not allow slavery and be a true democracy with justice for all: the “last best hope of Earth.” Today the nation is deeply divided on many issues. Among them is the concept of patriotism, which MerriamWebster, 2017 defines as “love for or devotion to one’s country.” With this definition in mind the students who accept the challenge this year are required to answer the following prompt in no more than 500 words: - Describe a current or recent event in which the actions of a participant(s) may be viewed as patriotic by some and as unpatriotic by others. - Discuss the differing points of view. What is your position and why? Essays will be evaluated
by a panel of judges. Winners will be notified by March 31. A celebratory luncheon will take place at Hildene on Sunday, May 20. The first, second and third place winners will read their essays aloud and receive their awards: first place, $1,000; second place, $750; third place, $500; and up to ten honorable mentions of $200 each. Hildene is open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. In fall 2017, application packets for the twelfth Hildene Lincoln Essay Competition were distributed to teachers of eighth grade English, history, and social studies, and to librarian and homeschool networks throughout Vermont. With all materials available on line at hildene.org/ schools.html, interested students are still able to enter the competition independently as well. If students have questions or would like to receive a packet by mail, call Stephanie at 802-367-7960 or email stephanie@hildene. org. Valentine’s dance gives people with DD a sense of community ARC Rutland Area, an organization for people with Developmental Disabilities and their families, and the Elks Club will be sponsoring a Valentine’s Day dance on Sunday, Feb. 11. The dance will be held at the Elks Club on Pleasant Street in Rutland and will run from 1 – 4 p.m. Along with the ARC’s members, families and friends the community is invited to share the afternoon of community and dancing. This is one of five dances ARC Rutland Area will be offering this year. After hearing of the dances, members wait for the weeks to pass, looking forward to the opportunity to get out and see their friends to have some fun. It is being proven that without recreation or socializing, people are not at their best health. These dances create a better life style for citizens by providing the hall, DJ, food and atmosphere for positive connections. The Elks work the kitchen,
serving and provide the hall, ARC provides the invite, notices, DJ, beverages and the crowd. We’ve got BIG News! FairHavenMotors.com
How to enjoy the second half of winter First, resounding wishes for a happy Groundhog Day. You can bet there will be celebrating at Castleton Free Library Story Hour - celebration of something or other, from Frank Lloyd Wright to limp rodents, happens every Friday morning around 10:30 a.m. It’s all good. And did you know that the very famous and immortal Phil actually lives in a climate-controlled burrow in the side of a public library? But whatever Phil’s verdict is regarding his shadow in Punxsutawney, there will be plenty of winter left in Vermont to enjoy snowshoeing. You don’t own snowshoes? No problem - borrow a pair at the library. We don’t know for sure when they will arrive - so call ahead at 802-468-5574 or check the library Facebook page. But thanks to a grant from the Vermont Department of Health, the library will be receiving multiple pairs of adult and children’s snowshoes from the Rutland Office of Local Health. The “Snowshoes in Libraries” Lending Program is part of their 3-4-50 initiative to address chronic disease in Vermont by promoting physical activity and encouraging community members to get outside for exercise during the winter months. Three behaviors - lack of exercise, poor diet and tobacco use - lead to the four diseases that cause more than 50 percent of deaths in Vermont each year. All you need is your library card to start on a path to better health through the snow-blanketed landscape. While you are at it, keep an
eye toward our winter birds. The Great Backyard Bird Count is coming right up, Feb. 16-19. To kick off this annual event, the library will again offer an introduction to anyone new to birding or to participation in this effort, an important contribution to North American bird data. This free presentation for all ages on Thursday Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. will be the first of several programs in 2018 celebrating “The Year of the Bird.” The library will include an overview of counting and reporting procedures, identification tips, a tour of the
data, and birding resources. If you haven’t yet set up an eBird account to track your own or others’ bird observations, the library will show you how. Earlier the same week, on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m., celebrate Valentine’s Day at a special Ladies’ Night with local author J.Carter Merwin presenting, “What the Heck is Women’s Fiction?” - merits, authors, and controversy - followed by a reading from her fantasy series. Merwin is a member of the Womens Fiction Writers Association and she promises chocolate.

British theatre comes to Manchester, Feb. 10 National Theatre Live, the best of British theatre broadcast to cinemas around the world, comes to Burr and Burton Academy’s Riley Center for the Arts on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults, $12 for seniors and $8 for students. Tickets may be purchased online at bbatickets.com. Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning is excited to offer the screening of Young Marx. It’s 1850, and Europe’s most feared terrorist is hiding in Dean Street, Soho. Broke and restless, the 32-year-old revolutionary is a frothing combination of
intellectual brilliance, invective, satiric wit and childlike emotional illiteracy. Creditors, spies, rival revolutionary factions and prospective seducers of his beautiful wife all circle like vultures. His writing blocked, his marriage dying, his friend Engels in despair at his wasted genius, his only hope is a job on the railway. But there’s still no one in the capital who can show you a better night on the town than Karl Heinrich Marx. National Theatre Live is sponsored by Aviva and distributed internationally by New York-based BYExperience.

Pawlet Library welcomes new director The Pawlet Public Library announces its new Library Director, Mary Lou Willits, of Middletown Springs. Please join us in welcoming Willits at her Welcoming Reception on Friday, Feb. 9 at 4:30 p.m. at the library, 141 School St. in Pawlet. Willits moved to Vermont 30 years ago and brings to the library a diverse and rich background. To paraphrase, she says with a smile that she is the poster child of someone who has realized the full potential of a liberal arts education! Mary Lou’s background includes English (B.A., University of South Dakota), Counseling (M.A., University of South Dakota), Museum Collections Care and Management, Historic Preservation, Financial Management and Fundraising, Project Management, Adult and Children’s Programming,
Exhibitions, Strategic Planning and Governance and Administration. She has served as Executive Director at the Slate Valley Museum in Granville for 10 years where she initiated the organization’s first strategic plan, secured grant funding, managed financials and fundraising, and significantly increased the annual operating budget. Mary Lou established the organization’s first endowment and created a sound and generous cash flow for the Museum, as well as increased membership and annual fund income. Her exceptional work with Collections Care and Management, along with Expansion and Capital Campaign projects produced significant assets for the Museum. Willits then went on to Green Mountain College to
serve as Director of Development for six years. There she served on the planning committee of the Board of Trustees and helped to articulate a long-range vision for the College. She created an eight-year implementation plan for the Development and Alumni Relations Office to substantially increase fundraising revenue from alumni, trustees, friends and foundations. “Her administrative skills, grant writing and management expertise, collections management background, along with her talent for creating interesting and creative programs for adults and children and her vision for longterm financial stability will serve as great assets for our Village Library in Pawlet,” said Janno Gay, the library’s trustee chair.

These Ice Fishing Tips are brought to you by:
• NEVER GO OUT ON THE ICE ALONE! Bring a buddy and keep a distance apart. This way, if one falls through, the other can go for help or attempt a rescue. • CARRY SURVIVAL EQUIPMENT! Carry a length of rope & ice picks to pull yourself up onto the ice. • DO NOT DRIVE ON THE ICE But if you must, unbuckle your seat belt and roll down the window. It will be easier to exit the vehicle should it go through the ice. • GIVE YOURSELF TIME If snowmobiling at night. Don’t “out drive” your headlight spot and avoid open water, pressure cracks and patches of weak ice. • AVOID ALCOHOL! Drinking increases your chances for hypothermia, impairs your judgment & slows your reaction time. • IF YOU FALL THOUGH THE ICE… TRY NOT TO PANIC! • Remove extraneous objects that weigh you down • Begin kicking your feet to bring your body horizontal, then slowly pull yourself along the ice until you are out of the hole. Once on the ice, DO NOT STAND UP, but roll or crawl away from the hole heading back to shore. Don’t stand up until the hole is well behind you. • If you can’t pull yourself out within 10 minutes, cease all attempts in order to conserve body heat. Get as much of your body out of the water as possible.

Craft program in Fair Haven The Friends of the Fair Haven Free Library invite community members to come make a beautiful bowl from coiled magazine paper with local artist Caren Helm. The program will take place in the library on Saturday, Feb. 17 from 9 a.m. until noon. This craft originated with the women of Vietnam and Thailand. Today this technique has made its way into our crafty hearts. This is a simple method that you will be able to repeat again and again to make durable, long lasting gifts. Attendees will also get a list of instructions. Helm said that there is no
special talent or experience needed to have a great time and be creative. Each person needs to bring a small bottle of Tacky Glue Elmer’s is not suitable for this project - and a smile on your face; the rest will be provided. This craft day will be similar to a quilting bee - fun, chatter and amazing results. Space is limited to 20, so you will need to reserve your spot. Please call the library at 802265-8011 to reserve your spot. Take a look at the bowls on display in the library; it will surely get you excited about this perfect way to spend a winter’s day.

‘Enthusiastic’ students sought for summer programs Enthusiastic Vermont learners in grades 9-12 are eligible to apply to one of the eleven fun and intensive summer programs through the Governor’s Institutes of Vermont (GIV). Applications are now open at www.giv.org/applynow. GIV offers enthusiastic young Vermonters the opportunity to dive in-depth into a topic they love, meet other students from around the state, and experience life on a college campus. Institute topics for 2018 include Visual and Performing Arts, Engineering, Environmental Science and Technology, Architecture/Design Build, Creative Writing, Mathematics, Entrepreneurship, Current Issues and Youth Activism, Astronomy, and Information Technology and Digital Media. These immersive programs take learning beyond the classroom and into the outside world, giving students the time and resources to take their interests to the next level at campuses all across the state. Changes afoot in Summer
2018 include launching a new Health and Medicine Institute in partnership with AHEC, plus an all new Engineering Institute at Norwich University where students will explore green engineering and principles related to environment, transportation and energy. Additionally, its Entrepreneurship Institute now offers college credit through Dual Enrollment. The Arts Institute, in its 35th year, provides world-class opportunities for young Vermont artists, giving access to professional mentors, a network of artistic peers from around Vermont, and great facilities in which to be creative and learn new skills. With a combination of state and donor funding, GIV offers a sliding scale tuition that is based on family income and need. In 2017, approximately 81 percent of attendees received some level of financial aid. GIV hosted approximately 650 students in 2017. “Vermont’s most talented young people need opportu-
nities to pursue their learning goals more deeply and connect with careers that interest them, and GIV is glad to be expanding those unique opportunities for the seventh year in a row. We are dedicated to offering nationally recognized immersion programs at a price every Vermonter can afford.” says Karen Taylor-Mitchell, GIV’s Executive Director. Applications for summer Institutes will be accepted at www.giv.org/apply through March. Deadlines for student applications are set by individual high schools, so students are encouraged to contact their school counselors for more information. The Governor’s Institutes of Vermont is an independent nonprofit working in partnership with the Vermont Agency of Education, Vermont Department of Labor, VSAC, private donors, and all Vermont high schools.
