Poultney profiles Poultney Public Library: serving the community since 1895 The Poultney Public Library first opened to serve the community in 1895, renting a room in a private house on Main Street. After a brief time it moved to the old Town Hall building. Many residents fondly remember the collection of taxidermy birds that were part of the library collections at that time. It wasn’t until 1956 that the Poultney Public Library moved to its current location at 205 Main Street, a move that required reducing the library collection by approximately half. Even with these reductions the library quickly outgrew the space in the old Citizens Bank building, which led to an addition in 1971. Changes in technology, library services and programs, and library use proceeded to fill this space in no time. To meet the still growing demand, the library underwent a second addition and major longoverdue renovations in
programs to introduce children to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. In May 2017 the Director of the Poultney Public Library, Rebecca Cook, was awarded the Sarah C. Hagar Award by the Vermont Library Association. This award, recognizing the Vermont Librarian of the Year, was awarded in recognition of her work on the library construction project, outreach to the community, 2016. This culminated in a grand re-opening in January 2017. Since the grand re-opening, the Poultney Public Library has grown its collection and services while keeping the same warm and welcoming atmosphere. We have held a wide variety of popular programs and events including historical talks, movie nights, literacy programs for children and teens, book discussion, knitting groups, game nights, and STEAM

Poultney profiles Women's Club ser ves their community Organized in 1922, the Poultney Women’s Club is made up of women working together for the betterment of the community. Instead of one president, there are eight women who rotate the presidency to minimize the work. Jean Davis is one of the co-presidents. “My mom was a member for over 40 years so I joined around 1990,” Davis said. It takes a multitude of presidents to manage all the projects, sponsorships and fundraisers the Poultney Women’s Club organizes each year. The club’s largest project is the annual Christmas Community Tree of Giving which puts presents under the trees of families in need. The Poultney school provides a list of the families and the children’s names are hung on a Christmas tree at Northland Real Estate. “People come in and take a tag,” said Davis. “Some buy the whole list, some do a portion of it, others donate money towards shopping for the items. We offered presents to around 70 children this past year.” The club also sponsors the annual Community Christmas Concert with the Poultney-Granville Town Band and contributes to the Fourth of July Parade. Two community breakfasts, Breakfast with Santa and Breakfast with the Easter Bunny, are always a big hit. A hearty breakfast is reasonably priced at $1.25
Members of the Poultney Women's Club. so parents can afford to take the family. The club served 196 breakfasts with Santa last December. “It’s not a money-making project, it’s a community service for the families,” Davis said. For the elderly, the club delivers baskets filled with cookies, hand cream and other goodies to senior citizens who live alone in lowincome housing. Retraining scholarships for women who have primarily been homemakers but have lost their means of support are offered through the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Vermont. The Barbara Jean Barker Memorial Scholarship for Displaced Homemakers was named in honor of a member of the Poultney Women’s Club who served as a past president of the
Vermont Federation. Local high school students are also served as the Poultney Women’s Club provides an award of $500 to a valedictorian pursuing higher education and the Barbara Jean Barker Leadership Awards offers cash prizes and “Lamp of Learning” pins to high school students with a 90+ average for three semesters. The club also contributes to a number of local organizations as well as to larger organizations in the greater region. How does this busy club raise the money for all these projects, scholarships and donations? “Our biggest fundraiser is the Poultney Community Calendar,” said Davis. Individuals pay to list birthdays and anniversaries on the calendar and local businesses buy ads.

The club also held their first-ever basket party last year, which was a huge success. Meetings for the Poultney Women’s Club take place every third Thursday from September to May at the Poultney Methodist Church. Annual dues are $22. Meetings include a local speaker and sometimes a craft project. There are 32 members in the club. “Most are older, but we also have some in the 30- to 40-year-old age group,” said Davis. “We just welcomed five new members this year.” “We are always looking for new members and we welcome donations,” Davis said. “It’s a good way to help the community.” For more information about the Poultney Women’s Club, contact Jean Davis at 287-4047.

Poultney profiles Poultney American Legion: Powered by solar The Poultney American Legion building is located at 689 Granville St. in Poultney. When someone drives by the building they will quickly notice the banks of solar panels. It is believed that Post 39 is the first legion building in Vermont that is powered by solar energy. Members of Post 39 decided to make the switch to solar power as a cost-cutting measure, which they are hoping will help make more funding available to veterans and the community Post 39 is named in honor of J. Claire Carmody, who died in battle in Soissons, France, on July 18, 1918. He is buried at St. Raphael Cemetery in Poultney. The American Legion is a community service organization chartered by Congress in 1919. There
are now more than 15,000 posts worldwide, with nearly 3 million members, men and women. The Poultney American Legion looks to help veterans and their families. Funds that the organization raises each year are returned to the community. One of the community programs that Post 39 is involved in is American Legion baseball. The Poultney American Legion, along with posts in Fair Haven, Castleton and West Rutland support the local legion baseball team. Post 39, like other legions around the country, is committed to the development of our youth. The goals of American Legion baseball are to develop discipline, individual character and leadership qualities among young people, the Vermont American Legion website
says. Post 39 also has a very active auxiliary group. The Poultney American Legion Auxiliary is one of 46 units statewide. Post 39 auxiliary president Robin Miller said auxiliary groups support many veterans’ programs within the state of Vermont. One example of how the Post 39 auxiliary supports the youth in the community of Poultney can be witnessed around
Memorial Day each May. When Poultney Elementary School holds their annual Memorial Day assembly, members of the Post 38 auxiliary are always in attendance. At the conclusion of the event, auxiliary members hand out patriotic red, white and blue sunglasses, hats, dog tags, and other souvenirs to bring awareness to the true meaning of Memorial Day to the students.

Poultney profiles Poultney Historical Society receives unique donation The Poultney Historical Society has been given a large HO model train layout created by (Oscar) Milt McWithey, who died on January 22, 2017, in Flintville, Tennessee. Milt’s wife, artist June (Ray), painted the scenery and buildings with help of family members. Milt was born in Poultney in 1928 and lived on East Main Street. In a garage behind his house, he crafted a meticulous recreation of the center of the village in the 1920s. His train layout, which is 50 feet long, also includes buildings in Whitehall and Fort Edward as well as the large railyard in Mechanicville, New York. Other locales may be recognized as more people see the display. Milt served in the Coast Guard and U.S. Navy in World War II. He was a graduate of UVM; in his career, he was an engineer with IBM, Sikorsky
helicopters, and the Apollo program. He was a member of the Poultney Rescue Squad. The layout was the generous gift of Milt’s children, Kevin McWithey of Flintville; Keith McWithey of Indiana; and Diane McCandless of Decatur, Alabama. The PHS is grateful for the family’s thoughtfulness and for this unique gift. Thanks also go to local donors, who paid for shipping the layout from Tennessee. The 15-foot view of Poultney stretches from the railroad bridge across the Poultney River in the south to the Borden Creamery and a slate quarry north of the village. Buildings on Bentley Avenue, Main Street, Depot Street, and Church Street are accurately recreated in miniature as they would have been in the 1920s when Delaware & Hudson passenger and freight trains connected the
The HO model train layout. Poultney to the world. Some of the buildings, like the creamery, no longer exist, but the view toward Green Mountain College, which includes Taps Tavern, the bank, and the Journal Press building, is unchanged. The exhibit promises to be a fascinating window on the past for visitors of all ages, especially children. In the meantime, there is
work to be done. The first step is assembling the panels and raising them off the floor. A few parts of the display need refurbishing. The models of several buildings, notably Bixby Coal, were under construction when Milt stopped work. The goal is to see trains run again through the heart of Poultney.

Poultney profiles Poultney Elementar y School Poultney Elementary School is privileged to work with children as they learn and grow socially, emotionally and academically. We have 22 educators and 14 instructional assistants, in addition to school counselors and nurses, who function in various capacities to support students in meeting expectations which are becoming more rigorous and demanding on a regular basis. Through teamwork and dedication, we persist in embracing a vision which recognizes and respects all children for who they are, and strives to assist them in achieving their goals and reaching their fullest potential. As needs of children are ever-changing, PES is fortunate to have the support of local businesses and organizations, neighboring colleges, in addition to our Parent Teacher Organization and the greater Poultney community. As per state requirements, leadership teams have been established to guide our work in an effort to increase student performance and meet the criteria for accountability; standards remain to be modified and/or developed which makes these times most challenging f o r students, and
others involved in the educational process. Our teacher-led committees work in Professional Learning Community (PLC) groups to assist in promoting school-wide progress, which include professional development in the areas of math and literacy instruction and assessment, as well as investigating ways to address social and emotional needs of our children. With the support of Castleton University, Green Mountain College and other outside entities, we are confident that practices will be implemented to allow for positive learning experiences for students. Our highly-qualified educators are caring, energetic and committed to excellence and professionalism; you will not find a better bunch! Above all else, students know that they are the top priority as they are welcomed with smiles each and every day. Due to the expectations and rigor that come with the Common Core State Standards, teachers have been diligent in collecting resources to be integrated into classroom practices that include hands-on and technology-based activities, all of which are researchbased. In addition, PES students are fortunate to have iPads, laptops and Chromebooks, as well as a complete computer lab, by which to offer many online programs to challenge, and support students in their skill acquisition. These activities, as well as projectbased learning opportunities allow children to work individually, as well as in small and whole groups; both within and outside of the classroom setting. As students are given voice and choice in their education, we are able to encourage independence and foster leadership beginning in the early grades. Fitness activities are supported by our climbing wall and participation in Walk, Bike and Roll to School events; just some of the ways students are

inspired to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Our school continues to participate in the Pico Ski and Snowboard Program and 36 percent of our student population traveled on Friday afternoons to the mountain. Other offsite offerings included ice skating at Spartan Arena, and bowling at Granville Lanes. In addition, children remained at school exploring a variety of activities such as hand-bells, cooking, Lego Robotics and Spanish. This six-week experience is just another means of providing students with a multitude of opportunities to enjoy. PES is proud to invite parents and Poultney residents in often for celebrations and student-led assemblies; our annual Veterans Day and Memorial Day Ceremonies have become very dear to us here. VIP Luncheons and BBQs, as well as volunteering in classrooms, are other means that afford parents opportunities to feel welcomed as participants in their child’s learning. We continue to be grateful for the support that is rendered by the residents of Poultney for their children and their education. The “STAR” program is a school-wide behavior system which inspires all students to be safe, trustworthy, accepting and respectful through the use of common expectations and language. Community leaders join us in recognizing our Star Students at assemblies, breakfasts and luncheons as part of our efforts to support positive peer relationships. Please stop by our beautiful school and I am sure you will be impressed. You will find a warm welcoming staff and students who are polite and eager to tell you of the treasures of their school and their town. Poultney is a great place to be! Poultney profiles Stone Valley Arts a great community asset Stone Valley Arts at Fox Hill is located at 145 East Main Street in Poultney (across from Poultney High School) in a handsome twostory stone building that is rich in history. In 1822, people gathered for the dedication of the Stone Meeting House on the hill (built with blocks of limestone hauled by oxcart from as far away as Whitehall and Fort Ticonderoga). This first Methodist Church in the state of Vermont occupied the building until the Millerites began using it from 1841 through 1869, at which time the Masons purchased the Stone Church and opened the Morning Star Masonic Lodge on February 15, 1870. After the Masons were no longer holding regular meetings, they held on to the building until selling it in 2007 to Rita Fuchsberg and Irene Minkoff. Although the Masons might have sold it to a private buyer, they preferred the sisters’ dream to convert this historic landmark into a center for the arts. Unfortunately, their development of Fox Hill (Fuchsberg) was curtailed by the death of Irene’s husband Michael Castagnaro. As with the Masons, the sisters preferred the building to become a community arts center, rather than a private residence. “It keeps the dream alive,” said Irene. So in 2014, they generously bequeathed the Old Stone Church to the Preservation Trust of Vermont, under the guidance of Paul Bruhn, the executive director.
In 2012, the Poultney Downtown Redevelopment Commission held a conference at Green Mountain College in the morning and St. Raphael’s in the afternoon. One of the outcomes of this planning session was to come up with four initiatives: a local foods restaurant, a system of trails, a public park, and a community arts center. For the first year, the community arts center, known as Stone Valley Arts was located in Chuck Colvin’s Journal Press Building. Then when the Preservation Trust of Vermont offer came along, SVA relocated to the old Stone Church at Fox Hill. Stone Valley Arts is now a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit community arts organization. SVA memberships are available for students, individuals, and families. Scholarships are often available for classes and workshops. The purpose of Stone Valley Arts is to provide classes, events, presentations, and workshops in the literary, performing, and visual arts for all ages and all levels of experience. Some of the recent offerings for children have been Artists and Their Animal Muses (K-6th grade), Creative Movement (ages 4-6), Creative Movement (ages 7-10), Exploring Portraits (K-6th grade), and Meet Matisse (K-6th grade). The programs for adults have included Art Insights (Critique), Dance (Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Tap), Drawing in Community, Figure Drawing, Jazz Ensemble,
Stone Valley Arts. Literary Open Mic, Meditation, Men’s Choir, Poetry Salon, Script Writing, and Yoga. Another way SVA brings the community together is by hosting art shows. In 2017, SVA curated and hosted six art exhibitions. SVA also produced or participated in 26 unique arts events, including jazz and classical music concerts, modern dance performances, poetry and story readings, talks, and workshops in dance, drumming, and yoga. Many events were free or free will donation, and all were open to the public. The long-term goal of Stone Valley Arts goal is to inspire enjoyment, interest, and participation, as well as to integrate the arts into the fabric of the community, thereby enhancing the quality of life in the entire region. For a full rundown on membership details and present offerings, please visit the Stone Valley Arts website (stonevalleyarts.org). While arts programming is our primary mission, SVA has also taken on the chal-

lenge of rehabbing and preserving this historic building. A Conditions Assessment conducted by the Preservation Trust of Vermont notes the “robust construction and overall good condition,” but also provides a detailed report of work needed. Repairs and on-going stewardship of this “significant historic resource” will require a great deal of fundraising (grants and private donations) as well as thousands of volunteer hours. Everyone who has a skill can help: Building and Grounds Maintenance/Repairs (painting, carpentry, masonry, mowing, gardening, tree service), Fundraising, Grant Writing, Bookkeeping, Administration, Contractor oversight... and more. SVA is your community arts center, and everyone is welcome to get involved. Email: stonevalleyartscenter@gmail.com. Come to play in the arts, and come to work too! Together we can create a lasting public good that Poultney will be proud of for generations to come!

Poultney profiles Journal Press Building features creative artists The Journal Press Building, 188 main street in Poultney, has been a hub of creativity since 1908. The old-time printing industry eventually succumbed to the digital revolution but the building’s role as a center of creativity in the community continues. Now called the “Poultney Small Business Center”, it is home to a variety of business and educational ventures, most notably providing studio space for a number of artists including painters, a book and paper conservator, a slate sculptor, and a photographer. Dick Weis was the first artist to move into the building, establishing a studio on the third floor in 2008. A retired art faculty member from Green Mountain College, he has been able to continue working full-time on nuanced color-filled abstract paintings, drawings, and traditional portraits in a light filled studio with southern and western views. Kerry Furlani, a sculptor specializing in working with slate, established her studio a
few years later in a space looking out on mainstreet. The skill she has developed training with master carvers in England and Wales, is reflected in her specialty of creating exquisitely carved lettering conveying inspirational messages. Her studio is full of sculpture-inthe-round and beautiful drawings as well. Photographer Jonathan Taylor has taught at Green Mountain College and Castleton University as well as other institutions around the state. He currently is art instructor at Mill River High school. His personal work exploring family, place, and space ranges from small intimate views of our landscape, often with social and environmental overtones, to large-scale installations involving perceptions of what it means to be family. Painter Grace Mellow prefers to work on-site in the forests of Vermont or in her third-floor studio. The results are vibrant landscape paintings in watercolor and oil.
Karl Eberth, Grace Mellow, Dick Weis and Kerry O Furlani. Brigitte Rutenberg, a Middletown Springs resident, splits her time between Vermont, Pennsylvania, and France. Her complex paper quilts made of small drawings on vellum, drawings on glass, and intriguing masks build on a her studies in Europe and, the Pennsylvania Academy, and exposure to cultures around the world. Brigitte’s studio occupies a portion of the third floor space that once served as a gathering and performance space for the community. Don’t be confused by the door that says “Acme Detective Agency”. It opens into the book and paper conservation studio of Karl
Eberth of Pawlet. Here Karl does everything from stabilizing paper documents to rebinding and restoring covers on old books. In his own way, Karl is bringing back to the historic Journal Press Building some of the tradition that marked the building’s founding. Most of the artists do not keep regular hours, however if wander into the Poultney Small Business Center some afternoon, you are likely to find an artist at work in one of their studios. Appointments can be made to visit individual studios by contacting the artists directly through their various websites.

Poultney profiles Poultney Food Shelf offers meals to many The Poultney Food Shelf in the Stonebridge Inn at the corner of Main and Beaman Streets serves residents of Poultney as well as Middletown Springs and Hampton, New York. The Food Shelf provides some 3,000 meals a year to about 400 families. The Poultney organization serves as an emergency Food Shelf helping to fill the gap for eligible residents who find themselves short on food for the month. “We are here to help when the family is in crisis, jobs fall apart, or the unexpected happens,” said Bonnie Ballard, the treasurer and a Food Shelf board member. “We also do a case-by-case assessment, and there are times when the situation needs more than just a stop-gap fix.” The Poultney Food Shelf is open from 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays. During the holiday season, the organization opens their doors for a special “Open Food Shelf.” The “Open
Food Shelf ” serves the community three times a year, at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. They are closed on days that schools are closed. The food comes from food drives that are put on by various clubs and organizations such as the Postal Service and Boy Scouts. Any items that the Food Shelf does not receive through donations is purchased at local grocery stores and the Vermont Food Bank. The Poultney Women’s Club, the Rotary, Modern Woodmen, Masons, Eastern Star, Snow Devils Snowmobile Club and Green Mountain College are among the organizations that donate to the Food Shelf. One way that the food shelf is able to serve people more efficiently this year is through weekly trips to Rutland to pick up items. The group’s volunteers can now go to pick up goods at the Vermont Food Bank Rutland Distribution Center every Tuesday
morning. These items include fresh produce and dairy items such as milk and cheese. Now when the food shelf opens its doors on Tuesday visitors can be more assured that fresh items will be available. Previously deliveries from the Vermont Food Bank only came on the third Wednesday. ”We go to the food bank in Rutland on a weekly basis,” Ballard said, “so fresh produce is available each Tuesday along with baked goods donated by Price Chopper. Commodities are distributed on the second Tuesday of each month. The Poultney Food Shelf is completely self-funded. No government funding is received from the three towns the Food Shelf services or any state or federal monies. The Food Shelf depends on the community of Poultney to help them help others. This year the Poultney Food Shelf is raffling off a “One of a Kind” handcrafted rocking chair as a
fund raiser. This rocker was made special for the food shelf. The drawing will be held the food shelf on Feb. 27. People who purchase tickets don’t need to be present to win. “The rocker is a very comfortable and unique chair.” Ballard said. “Tickets are still available.” The Poultney Food Shelf is run by a board of seven members, and volunteers. The organization is always looking for more volunteers and added donations. “We are always looking for folks to volunteer and we gladly accept donations,” Ballad said. “Poultney High School students and some older Poultney Elementary School students get credit for community service by working with us.” To volunteer, donate, or for further information on the Poultney Food Shelf, call 287-9558.

Through the
dedication and help of these volunteers, the chamber continues to host many events, current and traditional. Oftentimes member businesses are sponsors of specific events. Poultney profiles Citizen of the Year: Josephine "Jo" S. Williams Poultney 2017 Citizen of the Year is Josephine “Jo” S. Williams – an “unsung hero” for numerous reasons witnessed, described and endorsed by many residents. Jo’s life has been dedicated to her extended family and to the greater family of the Poultney community. In the community as a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of Poultney Hose Company, Jo started up the coffee urns and massproduced sandwiches for the firefighters when they rushed off to fight fires, night or day. Her dedication to the fire department, community safety and unity has been the way of life for Jo, all her life so far. Mother of five children, she brought up a future fire chief as well! Jo is a founding member and dedicated supporter of Poultney Rescue Squad and has helped it in many capacities. She continues to volunteer in their Thrift Shop to this day. As a lifetime member of Poultney Women’s Club, Jo has volunteered for many of its programs which provide activities, entertainment, nourishment and assistance for the residents of Poultney. Within her spiritual family of the Catholic Church, of which Jo has been a lifetime member, she assists with many of

Josephine "Jo" S. Williams its programs and its Women’s Guild. She was church secretary for many years, and she is wellknown in the church community for her famous baked beans which she bakes for most funerals and other celebrations. And she sings in church most every week. Jo’s dedication to the community has overflowed often into many other areas as well, both through gifts of her time, knowledge and monetary contributions. Those include programs and events of J. Claire Carmody Post #39 and its Auxiliary; to the local women’s barbershop chorus; to Poultney school band programs and Poultney’s Town Band; to Poultney’s July 4th celebrations including the Dip Dinner and
Strawberry Social; Poultney Booster Club; Boys and Girl Scouts of America; Poultney Area St. David’s Society, to the Young At Heart Senior Center, Poultney Food Shelf, Poultney Cemetery Association and Poultney Historical Society. On the two separate occasions when the St. David’s Society hosted 90 Penrhyn Choir guests from Wales, Jo volunteered her home as a host family site and welcomed choir members into it and her family’s life by providing lodging, meals, fellowship and respite. She routinely invites folks not having family nearby to join her family’s holiday dinners or sends dinners to those having to work holidays. Jo’s energy and caring for the community overflowed often through her career as Poultney’s town clerk, an elected position which she held for many years before retirement. To this day, Jo continues to provide information to the town, as the “elder” so to speak. All that Jo has done and given to the community she has managed with grace, humility and her quiet, behind-the-scenes approach. Jo’s family and close friends often refer to her as “The Eveready Bunny” for her “get up and go!” Jo will be the Grand Marshal of the 2018 July
4th parade hosted by the Poultney community. The Chamber’s Citizen of the Year Award, presented annually since 1990, honors a resident citizen who has made major contributions to the betterment of Poultney; has distinguished herself or himself through outstanding service to the community and typifies the true spirit of service and self-sacrifice in representing the finest ideals of Poultney citizenship, a real “unsung hero” of Poultney. 2018 Citizen of the Year: Invitation for nominations for the 2018 Citizen of the Year will be publicly noticed at the end of July and reception will be held in the fall. A citizen may receive the award one time only. To view a chronological list of the names of awardees to date, visit the website of Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce. of the family to learn about community values and citizenship while developing leadership skills. Patricia Matteson, secretary of Poultney Valley Grange, explained that their Order is dedicated to helping the local community and that they contribute to it in many ways. Some ways they do that is through fund-raiser events to raise needed funds for their projects, such as raffles and by working at a Bingo event once a year in Wells. Patricia said some of the Poultney community projects they contribute to are Poultney Food Shelf, the Poultney Women’s Club Tree of Giving, and the Back Pack for school children program. One of the National Grange projects they are active with is “Words for Thirds,” a program in which a dictionary is given yearly to each third grade student in the schools in both Poultney and Wells. They also provide help to their member families as well as to community families in need at Christmas and Easter time. Poultney profiles Poultney Booster Club supports PHS teams “Small in size, but big in spirit!” These are words that the sports teams at Poultney High School have lived by for several years. Operating an athletic program in a small school with limited resources has its challenges. When these challenges need to be met, the Poultney Booster Club steps in. The club’s mission is to provide support in whatever way is needed to the school’s student-athletes. The Poultney Booster Club has been operating for several years, and prides itself on providing emotional and financial support to Poultney
student-athletes when needed. The students know that the boosters are always there for them. The main role of the Poultney Booster Club is to provide financial support for all the athletic teams, said president Todd Mason. When extra funding is needed for things such as transportation and equipment, the boosters step up to the plate. The boosters help sponsor transportation for the cheerleaders to their state competitions. When softball, baseball or other sports need new equipment, the boosters help with the financial end of
getting them the equipment that they need. The most recent project the Poultney Boosters have supported is the building of the new press box at Dean Houghton field, the high school football field. Mason became involved in the club through the participation of his children, Heath and Leanna. Heath is a member of the boys varsity basketball team while Leanna plays for the Lady Blue Devils. Of course, helping Poultney athletics in so many ways requires the club to come up funds. The boosters run several fundraisers
throughout the year. One of fundraisers that is highly popular is the 10 Week Club Raffle. The boosters also hold 50/50 raffles and an MWA Bingo night. Being a member of the club entails a lot of extra hours, but Mason said the commitment is worth it. “When you have kids that work hard and learn things playing sports, they need to be supported,” Mason said. The Poultney Booster Club meets the first Wednesday of the month at Poultney High School. Donations to the Poultney Booster Club are always welcome.

Poultney profiles Poultney Rescue Squad Poultney Rescue Squad, Inc., a volunteer agency that consists of four paid employees and 14 active volunteers, responded to 486 calls in 2017. Due to the increasing call volume has hired additional staff to provide paid coverage seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Volunteers cover from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. Poultney Rescue Squad continues to see a decline in volunteers, partly because of the huge time commitment necessary to become an EMT. EMT courses are offered once a
year in District 10 and require 140 hours of classroom learning. It is a commitment of eight month, twice a week. Besides classroom learning, course participants are required to pass a series of rigorous practical skill stations before they are able to take the computer test at the end of the course. From start to finish, it takes a year to go through the course and train to a certain competency level to operate as an EMT. Several individuals that
start out as volunteers will often seek employment as EMTs for a paid service. To recruit members, the squad will offer an EMR course, which is an entry level certification to Emergency Medical Services. This training consists of 40 hours of classroom instruction and will run for 12 weeks. In addition to the EMR course, Poultney Rescue is looking for individuals to volunteer as drivers. There is a driver program that will train an individual on Emergency Vehicle
Operations, CPR, and basic equipment operations. The squad members have monthly training that falls on the second Monday of each month. Guest lecturers from EMS agencies, law enforcement and fire departments have led instruction, offering a deeper appreciation of each agency’s capabilities to benefit first responders. EMS providers from neighboring EMS agencies are invited and encouraged to attend the PRS monthly trainings.

Poultney profiles He's a 'gamer' for Poultney sports By Keith Harrington At halftime of a college basketball game recently at Green Mountain College, Dave Hughes was headed for the exit. He was on his way to another game at Poultney High School. Later that evening he was planning to drive to Fair Haven to the Slaters’ junior varsity game to watch Poultney transfer Kassidy Mack play. Welcome to a typical day for Hughes. “It gets me out of the house,” Hughes quipped with his usual broad smile. Whether it’s Poultney High School, Fair Haven High School, Green Mountain College, Castleton University or the College of Saint Joseph’s, Hughes is likely to be in the stands. You could make the argument that no one is a bigger fan of sports around the Poultney area, and that no one has seen more games than Hughes. Hughes graduated in 1984 from Poultney High School, where hew played football, basketball and baseball. He was as assistant varsity football
Dave Hughes coach beginning in 1985 and was on the staff until 2014. During that span he also coached JV football, JV boys basketball and girls varsity basketball. Hughes also coached summer softball in the 80’s. Even though Hughes no longer is on the sidelines or in the dugout, he is clear about why he stays involved in Blue Devils athletics. “Poultney is a small community and you get to know the kids,” Hughes said. “ I enjoy encouraging them and helping them out any way I can. I appreciate being able to give back for what PHS did for me.” One special thing that Hughes does is bring
Gatorade to games for certain Poultney players. “During the 2014 basketball season, I was a spectator at that time,” he said. “One of the players had a sister who was being deployed overseas and her parents went to see their daughter and were going to miss a few of the games during her sophomore year. They always brought her Gatorade before the game. I just decided I would see to it that she would still get a Gatorade before her games. And I’ve continued the tradition for basketball and even baseball.” Hughes has more memories than he can count when it comes to great moments in Poultney sports lore. The 1982 Northern Adirondack League Super Bowl, boys basketball state titles in the 90’s, the girls hoop state title in 2011, the multiple state cheerleading titles. and the 2007 Division III State Football Championship to name a few. One memory stands out to Hughes as a coach, however. “While coaching the boys JV basketball I had a player who had challenges.
He always gave 110 percent at practices. He felt he had to stay in one spot to shoot his baskets. During one game he made a 3-pointer from “his spot.”. He immediately ran over to me at the bench to highfive me and I had to tell him he had to get back on defense! Sweet memory for me.” Hughes acknowledged that being a part of Poultney sports is something unique. It’s Americana at its finest. “Pep rallies, enthusiasm of all the kids,” he said. “During the season, whichever one it may be, everyone becomes a family, coaches and athletes alike. I always tell people that whatever sports I was coaching I had that many kids. It felt special to call them my own. “To this day, a lot of the kids call me “Coach” even though I’m no longer on the sidelines or the court as a coach. And who can forget the feeling when your team gets escorted into town by the fire department and rescue squad after winning a championship. “Small in size, big in spirit!”
