Burke, a 43-year member of the Castleton Lions Club, planned the organization’s first fishing derby. He had turned the reigns of plan-

ermen who catch first-place bass, pike and trout. Three additional prizes of $250, $125, $75 are rewarded for second, third and fourth place. The angler who catches the biggest perch gets $400. Catchers of the second, third and fourth-place perch are awarded $200, $100, $50. Burke said the derby does get quite competitive, but outdoorsmen who participate are always looking forward to large fish being posted on the board, even if it’s not their catch. “Everybody wants to win … but I think they are always pretty happy when they see a really big fish and are happy for the guy that did catch it,” Burke said. A $500 bonus prize is awarded to posted fish that don’t quite make the size cut. “If you catch a fish and get it up on the board, even if it’s early and gets bumped off, your name is in there for a $500 drawing,” Burke said. Added Burke: “It gets fish on the board for us.” The prizes will be handed out at 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18 at Crystal Beach.
The remainder of the proceeds support the organization’s project fund. That money is used to provide glasses and eye exams for those in need, sponsor little league teams and support student scholarships. In the past, the club has used the funds to build covered pavilions and playground equipment at Crystal Beach on Lake Bomoseen. For information, contact Burke at 802-468-5454 (day) or 802-236-3715 (evening) or via email at jdownesburke@aol. com. Next weekend, the Fair Haven Rotary’s Great Benson Fishing Derby will take over Lake Bomoseen. Check in and register at Crystal Beach on Route 30 North in Castleton. All legal species caught from dawn Saturday, Feb. 24 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25 in all legal Vermont waterbodies and Lake Champlain are accepted. Contact Jennifer Larson at marykaylola@comcast.net or 802-265-2164 (day) / 802-265-2164 (evening) for additional details on the Fair Haven Rotary’s Great Benson Fishing Derby.

The derby itself is about 43 years old. It was started by Tom’s Bait & Tackle in Castleton three years prior to the Castleton Lions Club adopting it. “He wanted it to keep going,” Burke said. “I had fished in it, and I and the club saw some potential to help us make money for our project fund.” Registration, $20, comes with a raffle ticket to win a slew of donated prizes from a pop-up shanty to a power auger. “There are a lot of good raffle prizes you can win just by buying a ticket,” Burke said. Proceeds from derby registrations are used to reward the top fishermen in each of the fish categories. A $500 award is given to fish-

The 2018 count will take place Feb. 16-19.
It’s time to count the birds The 30th annual Great Backyard Bird Count is about to begin! More than 160,000 people of all ages and walks of life worldwide join the fourday count each February to create an annual snapshot of the distribution and abundance of birds. The 2018 count will take place Feb. 16-19. Every year, the Rutland County Audubon invites everyone to participate for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the count. Participants simply tally the numbers and kinds of birds they see, from any location, anywhere in the world, for as long as they wish, with minimum time slots of 15 minutes each. The results are logged into eBird, an online database that will display
count entries in near realtime. During the count, participants can explore what others are seeing in their area and around the world. They can share bird photos and sounds and enjoy images pouring in from across the globe. Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird Count is the perfect birdwatching citizen science project for kids, families and new birders. Last year, participants in more than 100 countries counted more than 6,200 species of birds on more than 180,000 checklists. For more information and instructions for participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count, visit birdcount.org.

David Oshinsky will present a talk, “Bellevue: Three Centuries of Medicine and Mayhem at America’s Most Storied Hospital,” on Saturday, Feb. 17 starting at 6 p.m. From a Pulitzer Prizewinning historian comes a riveting history of New York’s iconic public hospital that charts the turbulent rise of American medicine. Bellevue Hospital, on New York City’s East Side, occupies a colorful and horrifying place in
the public imagination: a den of mangled crime victims, vicious psychopaths, assorted derelicts, lunatics, and exoticdisease sufferers. In its two and a half centuries of service, there was hardly an epidemic or social catastrophe--or groundbreaking scientific advance--that did not touch Bellevue. Oshinsky, whose last book, “Polio: An American Story,” was awarded a Pulitzer Prize, chronicles the history of

America’s oldest hospital and in so doing also charts the rise of New York to the nation’s preeminent city, the path of American medicine from butchery and quackery to a professional and scientific endeavor, and the growth of a civic institution. From its origins in 1738 as an almshouse and pesthouse, Bellevue today is a revered public hospital bringing firstclass care to anyone in need. With its diverse, ailing, and unprotesting patient population, the hospital was a natural laboratory for the nation’s first clinical research. It treated tens of thousands of Civil War soldiers, launched the first civilian ambulance corps and the first nursing school for women, pioneered medical photography and psychiatric treatment, and spurred New York City to establish the country’s first official Board of Health. As medical technology advanced, “voluntary” hospitals began to seek out patients willing to pay for their care. For charity cases, it was left to Bellevue to fill the void. The latter decades of the twentieth century brought rampant crime, drug addiction, and homelessness to the nation’s struggling cities – problems that called a public hospital’s very survival into question. It took the AIDS crisis to cement Bellevue’s enduring place as New York’s ultimate safety net, the iconic hospital of last resort. Lively, page-turning, fascinating, Bellevue is essential American history.

Students sail away on ‘The Welcome’ On Tuesday, Jan. 23, Mettawee community School third graders, their classroom teachers Jennifer Leach and Mark Rampone, and parent volunteers spent the day aboard “The Welcome”. According to Ms. Leach, “The Welcome” lesson was meant to replicate the sailing that happened on Aug. 30, 1682 when William Penn led a group of immigrants to Pennsylvania to start a new colony. Throughout the day, with sails hanging from the ceiling (created by students and faculty), visitors to “The Welcome” (set in Leach’s classroom) saw 3rd grade students, their teachers, and guests dressed as 17th century colonists. Ms. Leach explained that the students got to create and take part in traditional crafts and games that would have occupied children and/or passengers aboard a ship for the long 2-6 month journey, “They learned how to tie boat knots and how to make hand-string figures and play games (like Cat’s Cradle). They also created and learned to play Jack Straws (present day Pick Up Sticks), as well as learned to play marbles using homemade clay marbles they had made prior to our trip. All learned to hand sew, and this led to making their own ditty bags.” Leach said that one of the best parts of the experience was, “... it was a full-day immersion project where the students walked into school as a ‘new person’ with a colonial persona that he or she had cre-

We did not get off the ship all day. All of the stations were on board - recess was spent on board doing typical physical activities or pencil sketching, lunch was on board; we even survived a big storm while on board. From the masts and sails set up, to the language we were using, to the snacks and food (like hardtack and dehydrated fruit), we tried to make our study of history come alive for the students.” Students even huddled under desks to recreate the

feeling of being enclosed in a small space such as the sailors would have experienced during the ocean crossing. Leach concluded, “All made it to Pennsylvania and disembarked RIGHT before dismissal!” Principal Brooke DeBonis pointed out that as an extension of “The Welcome” experience, some of the shipboard activities were demonstrated by 3rd graders at Mettawee’s Open House, held on Thursday,
