Fly tying meets 'Iron Chef' By Serena Kovalosky Fly-tying crackerjacks and newbies alike are invited to “tie one on” and test their skills on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 6 p.m. at the American Museum of Fly Fishing’s third annual Iron Fly contest in Manchester, Vermont. This Iron Fly is “fly tying meets Iron Chef ” as participants compete in “a battle of partying skills and bobbin prowess” to create the ultimate fish snack from a set of mystery ingredients. Television-inspired challenges, such as creating a fly while blindfolded or incorporating a candy wrapper, bring out the fun and everyone’s competitive spirit. The 30th annual Great Backyard Bird Count is about to begin! More than 160,000 people of all ages and walks of life worldwide join the four-day count each February to create an annual snapshot of the distribution and abundance of birds. The 2018 count will take place Feb. 16-19. Every year, the Rutland County Audubon invites everyone to participate for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the count. Participants simply tally the numbers and kinds of birds they see, from any location, anywhere in the world, for as long as they wish, with

Last year, participants in more than 100 countries counted more than 6,200 species of birds on more than 180,000 checklists.
