6 • The FREEPRESS • Friday, February 23, 2018 is invited to meet Anharad at the opening reception on Saturday, March 3 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Anharad’s art work expresses her love of being outdoors and gathering family and friends in the kitchen. She works mostly in acrylic, pastel, charcoal, and mixed media. Most recently Anharad launched into the medium of collage painting which combines acrylic paint and a variety of patterned papers. Often she uses handwritten letters and pages from her journal to enhance the work and add another element of her life into the work. This style of mixed media has allowed for more freedom of expression as it creates a more abstract view of the subject matter. All works are for sale, with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the library. Information: 802-867-5774. Dorset Village Library, Route 30 and Church St., Dorset, Vt.

SUNDAY Historical Talk The Greenwich-Easton Historical Association will hold its annual meeting in the Community Room of the Greenwich Free Library on Sunday, March 4, at 1 p.m. After a brief business meeting, there will be an informative and engaging lecture from area historian Debi Craig. The lecture, “Through Susan’s Eyes: Susan Brownell Anthony’s Childhood in Washington County” serves to commemorate the 100th anniversary of voting rights for women. As a result of the Women’s Suffrage Movement of the early 1900s led by the impassioned Susan B. Anthony, these rights were granted to women in New York State during 1917 as well as to women in Indiana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio and Rhode Island. Craig, a local retired music teacher, notes that many people are unaware of Anthony’s ties to the region. Susan B. Anthony moved with her family to Battenville, in the Town of Greenwich, Washington County, in 1826 when she was six. She didn’t move from this area until she was in her mid20s. Susan lived and taught here throughout her formative years, during which time many of her ideas about women’s

The growing importance of FFA FFA is a dynamic youth organization that prepares members for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. Granville FFA advisor Terry Wheeler said he believes in the importance of FFA because it is one of the fastest-growing career fields, representing more than 350 careers. “As our world’s population continues to grow, food security becomes a larger and larger issue,” Wheeler said. Greenwich advisor Betsy Foote says that FFA is an integral component of an Agriculture Program. “A quality program includes rigorous classroom education, FFA leadership activities and students who have work experiences in related agricultural fields - from farms to food,” she said. According to Hartford advisor Tricia Stewart, only 2% of the US population is directly involved in production agriculture. “FFA is charged with the responsibility of educating the next generation,” she said. Area students involved in FFA, originally called Future Farmers of America, are aware of the value of the work they do through the organization. “FFA is important because it helps to grow future agriculturalists,” said Audrey Sickles, reporter for the Schuylerville chapter. “Agriculture is a huge part of society and is sometimes overlooked or underestimated. FFA helps spread the word about the importance of agriculture.” Originally organized in 1928, today’s FFA has grown into a dynamic inter-curricular organization that emphasizes leadership along with agriculture. Across the United States, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands, FFA has over 649,355 members in grades 7 through 12 who belong to one of 7,859 local chapters. In Washington County, FFA has an active presence, with chapters in several schools. At Granville High School, FFA is a popular organization. It has about 58 members in grades 7 through 12. “In the 11 years that our chapter has been in existence, we have produced nine New York State and National FFA officers, representing over 750,000 FFA students nationwide,” said Wheeler. Ally Arnado is the chapter president, Libby Hicks and Sierra Ricks are the chapter vice presidents, Emma Bryant is the secretary, Kyra Gee is the reporter, Logan Baker is the sentinel and Mercedes Green is the group’s historian. Activities in the Granville FFA run year-round. Members present an Agricultural Exhibition each October in Granville. The group organizes the Battle of the Bands, which is usually held on the first Saturday in December. Other activities include the Junior High Hoedown and participation in the Washington County Fair, New York State FFA Convention and National FFA Convention, among others. Greenwich, home to the Washington County Fair, has another vigorous FFA chapter. The district boasts over 100 members, students in grades 7-12. The Greenwich Junior High officers are: President Katie Larmon, VicePresident Ciarrah Hebert, Secretary Ellery Mays, Treasurer Matt Bink, Reporter Lauren Chuhta and Sentinel Danielle Boyea. Senior High officers are: President Kassidy Kuzmich, Vice-President Jake Niles, Secretary Bryanna Booth, Treasurer Erin Armitage, Reporter Olivia Snell, Sentinel Lucia D’Acchille. “We are continuing the legacy that the Greenwich FFA is known for,” said advisor Betsy Foote. Greenwich chapter officers learned to advocate for agriculture and met with legislators and the Lt. Governor at the State Leaders Event in Albany. More than 30 members are competing in individual and team leadership events and the chapter was invited to speak at Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner’s Ag Tech Roundtable. Greenwich FFA members will be spending two days in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to tour the New Holland Manufacturing facility as well as Amish Farms, Green Dragon Flea market and Cabella’s. At the New York State FFA Convention, six members will be receiving their
NYS FFA Empire Degrees (the highest NYS FFA Degree a member can receive) and one member is running for district president. Their district has contributed more than $50,000 to the Adirondack Stampede Charity Rodeo over the years. In Salem, about 35 students in grades 6-10 participate in FFA. “FFA is important because it shows students how to be a leader, learn public speaking skills, and about community,” said Salem advisor Amy Maxwell. The Salem chapter’s current officers are: Philip Rea, President; Mikayah Rushinski, Vice President; Nevaeh McGowan, Secretary, Douglas Pennington, Treasurer, Mackenzie Spencer, Reporter; Emma Telford, Sentinel, and Hannah Groesbeck, Student Advisor. New activities this year include a cookie dough fundraiser in the spring and a trip to the National FFA Convention in October. “Each event has a purpose to better our members and prepare them for their future,” Maxwell said. In Hartford, about 40 students, grades 6-12, participate in the FFA. Local officers include president Abigail Robbins, vice president Britany Tyler, secretary Lauren Wicks and treasurer Thomas MacDuff Jr. In addition to participating in the annual Washington County Fair, Hartford members assisted with the Farm Bureau Trivia night, raising over $3,000 towards scholarships for FFA members to attend FFA conventions. “Our group of FFA members is acutely aware and sensitive to the needs of their local community as well as their fellow students,” said Hartford’s Advisor Tricia Stewart. “They are always willing to step up and volunteer their time as well as their funds whenever and wherever they are needed.” In November the chapter hosted the FFA District 3 Meeting where about 300 students from more than 10 school districts get together to discuss plans for the year. This year they hosted the recently retired National FFA Eastern Region vice president Ashley Willets, originally from Lowville, New York, as their keynote speaker. The chapter plans to coordinate a spring farm tour for chapter members of local farms in Washington County. They will attend the Sub-District trip to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the New York State FFA Convention in Rochester and the SUNY Cobleskill Spring Dairy Sale. FFA is very popular as well among students in Schuylerville, which has about 63 members in grades 7-12. Officers include president Jonathan King, vice president Christine Putman, secretary Hannah Koval, treasurer Adam King, reporter Audrey Sickles, sentinel Jillian Peek, committee chairperson Grace Hanehan and parliamentarian Matthew Peck. Schyulerville’s advisor is Deby Cahan. The chapter participates in many community events, such as the Turning Point Parade and Cobleskill’s Ag High School Days. Competition is a big part of their year, ranging from Sub-Districts to Nationals at the annual FFA National Convention, and they travel to FFA State Convention. Their officers recently took part in the 212/360 leadership conference in Syracuse. One of their newest events for their chapter this past year was hosting the SubDistrict competition and the chapter’s officers and a few members are enrolled in the Leadership in Agriculture class this year. New community events included a Pumpkin Palooza that raised money for an FFA Chapter in Houston, Texas that was devastated after the flooding from hurricanes. They also hosted a Salute our Soldiers Movie Night, creating care packages for soldiers for Thanksgiving. Hartford’s Tricia Stewart believes FFA instills passion and purpose in students already involved in agriculture as well as those students with no personal ties to agriculture. “I’m excited to see what our future holds, knowing FFA has helped us mature throughout our time in the organization,” said Salem FFA reporter Mackenzie Spencer. According to Schuylerville reporter Audrey Sickles, helping the community increases their members’ pride in FFA. “It feels good to do good,” she said. “This really makes us feel like we’re making a positive change in our world.”
