‘You don’t have to be an artist’ Decorated sap buckets to be auctioned at annual Maplefest Celebration By Krystle S. Morey

The FreePress will publish its annual Fair Haven Commuity Guide the week of March 26. Businesses wanting to be included in this year-round keepsake edition should call the FreePress today at 800-354-4232.

What’s more Vermont than sap buckets? As part of the Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Maplefest celebration, March 24-25, the Poultney Rotary Club and Stone Valley Arts are hosting a Sap Bucket Challenge.

“We wanted to be a part of the Maplefest,” said Valerie Broughton, Poultney Rotary board member. Take a sap bucket and turn it into a work of art using paint, paper mache, fabric and more. “You don’t have to be an artist,” Broughton said. “And they don’t have to be maple-related.”

Free sap bucket canvases are available at Williams Hardware in Poultney during regular business hours. Beginning the week of March 12, the sap buckets will help dress the storefronts of Poultney including the Poultney Library and East Poultney

Snowshoes available at the Poultney Public Library By Matthew Saari Although the wintery weather of the Northeast may make people feel like hibernating, the state of Vermont has other ideas. Snowshoes are now available at the Poultney Public Library, courtesy of the Vermont Department of Health. “[The Rutland Health Office] received a grant,” said library director Rebecca Cook, “to get folks a little more active during the winter time.” With the grant money, which totaled more than $2,000, 20 pairs of snowshoes including 12 children-sized pairs and eight pairs for

The Poultney Public Library now effectively owns the snowshoes, which will be made available throughout the winter months. “They’re ours to use as we see fit,” said Cook. Call to Artists: ‘Barn Art’ The Compass Music and Arts Center is accepting submissions for the juried exhibit ‘Barn Art’. The exhibit runs from April 6 through June 16 with a submission deadline of Feb. 23. Submissions will be considered by Vermont artists Denise Letendre, Susan Bull Riley, and Stephanie Stouffer, and judged based on the submitting artist’s interpretation of the “Barn Art” theme. A cash prize will be awarded, along with future exhibiting opportunities at Compass. Barns are of course a regular sight on the Vermont landscape, serving a very necessary and functional purpose to farmers, but they have also become an iconic image for the state and a valuable tourist attraction.

One barn in particular is also a big part of the Compass Center. Brandon Music, Compass’ concert venue, is a beautifully renovated 1820’s New England barn which also happens to be the former studio of folk artist Warren Kimble. The Brandon Music barn will soon take on another purpose by hosting ‘Barn Opera’, operas performed by professional singers in an intimate and informal setting. With all of these connections, an exhibit which celebrates the barn as an icon seems most fitting. The submission guidelines are available at www. cmacvt.org or via info@ cmacvt.org. The Compass Music and Arts Center is located in Park Village at 333 Jones Dr. in Brandon.

The Brandon Artists Guild presents a feast for the eyes with a fresh exhibit of pastel works by Middlebury artists Judy Albright and Cristine Kossow. The show, “Art from Farm to Table” runs Friday, March 2 through Monday, April 30. The public is invited to the opening reception Friday, March 2 from 5-7 p.m. Vintage tools, stacks of produce, farm animals – these are the Vermont staples that Kossow and Albright draw inspiration from. “I’m generally a still-life painter,” said Kossow. “But when I came to Vermont I got so excited about cows, chickens, pigs. I love to paint cows.” Relocating from the Hudson Valley, she finds no shortage of subjects in the Green Mountain State. A Parsons-trained graphic

designer, Kossow rekindled her love of painting when she received a box of pastels as a birthday gift. “I remembered my cousin, Judy, is a pastel artist so we reconnected” Kossow said. “Now we live across the street from each other and are having a joint show.” Albright, who earned a master’s degree in art and education at SUNY New Paltz, moved to Vermont from Connecticut about a year ago. In Middlebury she paints and teaches pastels. “The Vermont arts community and the public have been very welcoming to Cris and me,” said Albright. “We never expected to have this kind of exposure. Then again, we’re not shy.” “The theme, ‘Art from Farm to Table’ is our way of honoring the spirit of Vermont,” added Kossow.

“We’re very motivated to create art here.” Albright serves on the board of the Vermont Pastel Society; Kossow is on the board of governors of the Pastel Society of America. Their joint show will include existing work and several new pieces. This show is part of Vermont Arts 2018 – a yearlong celebration highlighting arts events across the state, sponsored by the Vermont Arts Council. The Brandon Artists Guild is an artist-run gallery with approximately 40 exhibiting artists and additional supporting members. The BAG, at 7 Center St. in Brandon, is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information call 802 247-4956 or visit www. is complete, assignments and schedules are tailored to the volunteer’s geographic and time commitment preferences. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and need to pass a background check. No previous hospice and health care experience is required. Hospice volunteers provide comfort and support to patients facing terminal illness, as well as respite and support to their families. Volunteer training covers the basic principles of hospice, understanding the special needs of patients and their families, effective communication, patient care, pain and symptom management, spiritual caregiving, and understanding grief and loss. Hospice volunteers are trained in listening skills, family dynamics and in using appropriate words to comfort patients and their loved ones at the end of life. After completing the class, volunteers can provide respite for caregivers, offer companionship for the patient, run errands and help families and patients in many meaningful

ways. Community members are encouraged to join the supportive and rewarding Hospice volunteer program where they can contribute their unique interests, skills, and talents. “Whether someone is interested in providing direct or indirect support, hospice volunteers are an integral part of the hospice team,” said Mary Pleasant, Hospice Volunteer Coordinator. “Hospice volunteering allows exceptional caring individuals to use their gifts and skills to help provide patients, caregivers, and families with the most peaceful and comfortable end-of-life experience possible…and there are benefits to our volunteers. Not only do our volunteers tell us they have a deeper understanding of death and dying, but they also gain an enriched sense of other cultures and beliefs and have an enhanced sense of fulfillment to the community.” For more information or to enroll call Pleasant at 802-4420540 or email her at mary.pleasant@vnahsr.org

Vote ‘yes’ to support community center To the editor Since 1998, the Castleton Community Center (The Old Homestead) has provided programs and services to help improve the quality of life for residents of western Rutland County. The center helps seniors and disabled residents remain independent. More than 3,200 rides were given last year for doctor’s appointments, nursing home visits, adult day care, therapy, food shopping and senior meals. In addition, more than 1,200 meals were served in our dining room to seniors from

Castleton, Fair Haven, Hubbardton and surrounding towns. The center offers health and fitness education, a walking trail and exercise programs to promote healthy living. Educational and recreational activities keep our seniors active and help improve the quality of life for them and their families. Our summer camp for children provides stimulating educational and recreational activities for children when school is not in session. The Castleton Community
