The organization often features prominent literary and cultural personalities and offers a weekly podcast in addition to a national public radio show. “When a storyteller stands in front of an audience and tells the honest truth about something, it will hit somebody somewhere,” Kingsbury said. “People often come up after the performance and say, ‘I know exactly how that feels.’” For Kingsbury, that’s the best compliment. In addition to a performance by Kingsbury, storytellers for Saturday’s Story Slam will include Carlisle Carey (Albany), Judi Thompkins (Rutland), Brandy Reynolds (Bennington), Michael Nigro (Bennington), Jarred Goodrich (Rutland) and Jennifer Hall (Massachusetts). Kingsbury started out in comedy and found his storytelling style was similar to that of The Moth which became the inspiration for The Rumpus. They began their season in 2016 at the Speak Easy Café in Rutland and ended their first year at the Brick Box with a Story Slam competition for prizes. The Rumpus continues to offer performances throughout the region. The Moth is a non-profit group based in New York City dedicated to the art and craft
