SUNDAY
Historical Talk The Greenwich-Easton Historical Association will hold its annual meeting in the Community Room of the Greenwich Free Library on Sunday, March 4, at 1 p.m. After a brief business meeting, there will be an informative and engaging lecture from area historian Debi Craig. The lecture, “Through Susan’s Eyes: Susan Brownell Anthony’s Childhood in Washington County” serves to commemorate the 100th anniversary of voting rights for women. As a result of the Women’s Suffrage Movement of the early 1900s led by the impassioned Susan B. Anthony, these rights were granted to women in New York State during 1917 as well as to women in Indiana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio
and Rhode Island. Craig, a local retired music teacher, notes that many people are unaware of Anthony’s ties to the region. Susan B. Anthony moved with her family to Battenville, in the Town of Greenwich, Washington County, in 1826 when she was six. She didn’t move from this area until she was in her mid20s. Susan lived and taught here throughout her formative years, during which time many of her ideas about women’s rights were developed. Debi Craig’s lecture will talk about local sites directly related to the development of Anthony’s foundational suffragist beliefs. Greenwich Free Library, 148 Main St., Greenwich, N.Y.
