Inside the auditorium of the Historical Society building historians David Wright and Jon Mathewson will partner with local maple-producer Ryan Mahar to deliver a presentation on the evolution of sugaring techniques and artifacts from the Historical Society’s collection will be used to illustrate this talk. interested in the tastiness of Vermont’s maple products – don’t you worry, there will be plenty of that. Downstairs, there will be maple products, desserts, coffee, cider and various other goodies for sale. Historical Society members each year make various maple desserts for sale, and there will be maple products, crafts and new syrup for sale, as well. Each year, two of the popular sugary goodies are old-fashioned sugar on snow and maple cotton candy. “I’m glad we got some fresh snow; we were wondering where we’d have to go,” Wright said. “Up to Killington I suppose.” The sweetness doesn’t stop at the taste buds, either. There will be some great prizes up for grabs throughout the day. A raffle drawing with many prizes including $100 and $50 in cash, maple syrup and maple products, craft items and gift certificates from local businesses will go on during the festival. The silent auction will include some of the event’s
larger items. Bidders will go after condominium offers in Williamsburg, Virginia; Killington ski and golf passes; a professional ski tune-up; 100 gallons of heating oil; genealogical and natural science research; lessons in billiards/ pool, spinning and photography; a basket of wine; a homemade quilt as well as other fine craft items; homemade pies; dining gift certificates and other donations from area businesses. “The silent auction is where some of the big prizes are,” Wright said. “We’ve had a lot of local businesses donate some great gifts.” While your senses of sight and taste will be overwhelmed by the delicious prospects of maple festival, so will your sense of hearing. Live acoustic music will fill the air, adding some sweet vibes. There will also be maplethemed kids’ activities for the youngest maple fanatics, including coloring and crafts, all with a seasonal theme. Slices will be cut thin so it is easy to try many different varieties. “We cut the slices really skinny, so people can try lots of different flavors,” said library director Kimberly Bushnell. This delicious annual event is in its 11th year. More than 150 people attend each year. “It’s pretty much a constant flow of people,” ChesnutTangerman said, “and magical-
ly, we have enough pies.” What attracts all these pie lovers? Chesnut-Tangerman can only theorize. “It’s the fresh-baked aspect. Who can turn that down?” Chesnut-Tangerman said. “These are all homemade by volunteers.” There will also be a baskettype raffle with more than 30 prizes including maple syrup, books, craft items, housewares, and gift certificates from local businesses. Price to attend is $7, $4 for children 5-12 and children under five are admitted free. All proceeds benefit the Middletown Springs Public Library. Hospice volunteer training in March The Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of the Southwest Region is providing a training for those interested in becoming hospice volunteers. Trainings will be held in the Rutland office at 7 Albert Cree Drive beginning Thursday, March 15 and will meet twice a week for four weeks. Pre-registration is requested for the training. Once training is complete, assignments and schedules are tailored to the volunteer’s geographic and time commitment preferences. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and need to pass a background check. No previous hospice and health care experience is required. Hospice volunteers provide comfort and support to patients facing terminal illness, as well as respite and support to their families.
Volunteer training covers the basic principles of hospice, understanding the special needs of patients and their families, effective communication, patient care, pain and symptom management, spiritual caregiving, and understanding grief and loss. Hospice volunteers are trained in listening skills, family dynamics and in using appropriate words to comfort patients and their loved ones at the end of life. After completing the class, volunteers can provide respite for caregivers, offer companionship for the patient, run errands and help families and patients in many meaningful ways. Community members are encouraged to join the supportive and rewarding Hospice volunteer program where they can contribute their unique interests, skills, and talents.
“Whether someone is interested in providing direct or indirect support, hospice volunteers are an integral part of the hospice team,” said John Campbell, Hospice Volunteer Coordinator. “Hospice volunteering allows exceptional caring individuals to use their gifts and skills to help provide patients, caregivers, and families with the most peaceful and comfortable end-of-life experience possible…and there are benefits to our volunteers. Not only do our volunteers tell us they have a deeper understanding of death and dying, but they also gain an enriched sense of other cultures and beliefs and have an enhanced sense of fulfillment to the community.” For more information or to enroll call Campbell at 802-770-1683 or email at john. campbell@vnahsr.org.

Salute to National
Girl Scout Week March 11 - March 17, 2018 Scouting Helps Young Women Grow The Girl Scouts of America is an organization that strives to instill proper moral values, character and courage in the young women of America. Anyone who has met a member of one of the numerous troops in the Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains can surely agree. The troops of the Lake Region are among those counted in that group. Area residents can expect to see the girls hawking their iconic cookies soon. Starting this month there will be cookie stands cropping up at numerous local businesses where cookie enthusiasts can purchase the treats and sate their sweet tooth. Although perhaps the most well-known aspect of Girl Scouts, selling cookies is but a fraction of what the girls do throughout the year. These girls’ always have a full plate in front of them. Every year the Girl Scouts get together with the Boy Scouts for the annual Powderpuff Pinewood Derby Once the region warms and the snows thaw, the girls will set foot in the great outdoors, embarking on their annual Outdoor Journey. Last year, Castleton’s Girl Scouts went camping in the Bomoseen State Park during which time they also conducted their Bridging Ceremony – a graduation ceremony where the girls proceed to the next level of scouting. Of note, Girl Scouts of America will be celebrating 106 years of scouting this year with Girl Scout Week. Girl Scouts across New Hampshire and Vermont will recognize this week, March 11-17, with daily activities that celebrate Girl Scouting. Participating in Girl Scout ceremonies that help girls share in Girl Scout history and traditions such as rereading and contemplating the Girl Scout Promise and Law, wearing their uniforms to worship and school and sharing with others what it means to be a Girl Scout. Since its founding, Girl Scouts has emphasized the importance of being civically engaged, by teaching and encouraging girls to create positive change in their communities through advocacy and action. Girl Scouting provides opportunities for girls to identify issues they care about, learn to stand up for what they believe in and take the lead like a Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader – GIRL – to create positive change in their communities through advocacy and action. They will explore science, technology, engineering and math – STEM – with hands-on activities such as robotics, botany and coding. They will show their leadership skills and raise their hands, stand up against bullying and help those in need. Girls will also tackle their fears and take risks by trying something new and taking part in outdoor adventures, shooting an arrow, scaling a rock cliff and learning survival skills. Juliette Gordon Low officially registered the first 18 Girl Scouts in Savannah, Georgia on March 12, 1912.

Julia Mark to perform at Brandon Music “I have literally seen people’s breath taken away when they first hear Julia Mark,” says Jay Ottaway, with the Plymouth Folk and Blues Festival. Julia Mark is a singersongwriter and pianist of jazz-inflected folk/pop but her songs are unique in their subjects. She writes lyric-driven, optimistically dissonant songs about life Julia Mark on the moon, loss of memory, shifting homes, and palindromes. Mark will next play at the popular barn venue, Brandon Music on March 10. Mark is the complete musical package. Ottaway goes on to say “Her combination of piano chops, soaring pin-point vocals, tightly woven evocative lyrics, and sweet but confident stage presence grabs her audiences’ attention and doesn’t let it go
until the last note rings. No flaws in her game!” With the songwriting penchant of Carole King and the soft-easy vocals of Suzanne Vega, Mark is for the listener who likes to transcend into a musical and visual scene. And she is captivating to watch herself ! When Red Line Roots’ Brian Carroll watches Mark perform, he wishes his parents forced him to take piano lessons as a kid. He says “Her hands effortlessly dance across the ivories and her voice is equal parts pure power and delicate grace.” Mark grew up in semi-rural New Jersey, listening to bebop greats and folk music legends. After several years of classical piano lessons, she began writing her own music as a
student of the late jazz pianist, Eric Doney. Upon graduating from Wesleyan University with degrees in Psychology and Music, Mark continued northward to Boston and became immersed in the singer-songwriter scene. She was a 2016 Iguana Music Fund grantee, spurring the creation of her first fulllength album (‘Gemini’), released at Club Passim on January 30th to a sold-out crowd. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20. A preconcert dinner is available for $25. Reservations are required for dinner and recommended for the show. Call 802-247-4295 or e-mail info@brandon-music.net for reservations or for more information. Brandon Music is located at 62 Country Club Road in Brandon, Vermont. This event is a part of Vermont Arts 2018, celebrating arts in Vermont.

‘Smart home’ up for grabs in Rutland Always wanted to live in Vermont? Here’s your chance to move to the Green Mountains—and live in a free, super-efficient smart home. Green Mountain Power, Naylor & Breen Builders, the United Way of Rutland County, NBF Architects and Rutland Mayor Dave Allaire kicked off GMP’s Rutland Innovation Home Contest, a national contest that will award one lucky family or individual a brand new, fossil-free home in the heart of Central Vermont. Along with the deed to a mortgage-free, energy-smart home complete with solar panels, air-source heat pumps, a Tesla Powerwall and a cuttingedge insulation package, the prize includes a local “concierge” to provide assistance with job searches, business and personal contacts and free co-working space at GMP’s Energy Innovation Center in downtown Rutland. “This home, built through an incredible collaboration involving nearly 60 parties, will be one of the most energy efficient homes in Vermont,” said GMP President and CEO Mary Powell. “It will be an example of Rutland’s incredible spirit, its ongoing rebirth and the energy and innovation that have fueled the city’s revitalization over the past several years. We hope to shine a light on the opportunities here including affordable housing and great schools, plentiful good-paying jobs, world-class skiing, the Green Mountains and Long Trail, and the glorious Killington Valley.” Tanner Romano, the vice president at Naylor & Breen Builders, who will oversee construction, lined up dozens of local subcontractors and local and national venders who will donate labor and materials. “Virtually every contractor and vender we approached stepped up,” Romano said. “They love this community, need workers and loved the idea of the contest as a way to
highlight the plentiful jobs available here,” he added. GMP Vice President Steve Costello conceived the contest while working on the regional marketing initiative, Real Rutland, which is focused on boosting the local population. “We have a great story to tell in Rutland, with a lot of progress in recent years and a lot of energy around the region’s rebirth,” Costello said. “The contest will help us spread the word, while addressing the city’s redevelopment goals. At the same time, we can demonstrate new technologies that can dramatically improve comfort and reduce operating costs and environmental impacts of homes.” Entry into the contest, which is free to any U.S. citizen over the age of 21, requires submission of a 500-word essay explaining why the applicant wants to live in the Rutland Innovation Home and what the individual or family would bring to community life in Rutland. The contest is open until 11:59:59 p.m. on May 18. Contest information and complete rules are at www. greenmountainpower.com. The Rutland Innovation Home will replace a dilapidated home the city acquired through a tax sale. GMP bought it from the city for $1 as part of the ongoing city effort to de-densify and invest in city neighborhoods. “Collaboration like this is one of the things that makes Rutland such a special place,” Allaire said. “This project will make an enormous contribution to the neighborhood, while raising awareness about plentiful jobs, our fantastic natural setting, and the sense of community.” A nine-member committee of community and business leaders will select 10 finalists based on their applications and essays, and will select the winner based on the essays, background checks and inter-
Hometown band, Rio County Line, to play at Maplefest By Krystle S. Morey Poultney, Vermont’s own Rio County Line is set to bring some sweet tunes to Maplefest this year. The four-man group plays a mix of rock, country, rhythm & blues, western swing and modern contemporary covers and originals. Greg Colm, Ron Vaughn, Garry Boothe and a mystery band member who will be introduced at the March 24 show will take the stage at the Poultney American Legion Post #39 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Each of the band members is from the Lakes Region and comes from a variety of backgrounds. Vaughn actually quit his job as a soap opera star on the popular show “Days of Our Lives,” to pursue his passion for music – and baking. “My band will be playing there to help support the
cause,” Colm said. While Rio County Line is playing, a silent auction of decorated sap buckets will be held at the Legion. Buckets that have been painted and filled with goodies will be sold to benefit the Poultney Rotary Club and Stone Valley Arts. The 20-year-old group volunteered to play at Maplefest freeof-charge. “We are a Poultney-based band. It’s nice to do things for our town,” Colm said. “And it’s a good cause.” Rio County Line also plays at various local venues including Taps Tavern in Poultney and the Boar’s Nest Bar & Grill in Fort Ann, as well as private parties and weddings. views. The 1,500-square-foot traditional New England-style farmhouse house will include three bedrooms, one and a half baths, a wide front porch, and the latest in energy technology and controls. NBF architect Edward Clark, the designer, said the home combines classic New England style with building systems and materials that will make it incredibly comfortable. “It’s the kind of house I’d want to build for myself,” Clark said. “It will be a special place —extremely efficient, with very low operating costs and a tiny environmental footprint.” Caprice Hover, executive director of the United Way of Rutland County, also jumped at the opportunity to help, signing on as a partner. “The response we’ve seen from contractors and venders is exactly what I have come to expect in Rutland,” Hover said. “I don’t know of another community that pulls together the way Rutland does when an opportunity arises.” The home is expected to be completed by late spring and awarded to the winner by late summer.
Avery Carter, Isabel Blankenbaker and Ben Park are congratulated at the district competition.
Long Trail School Students sweep oratorical competition Long Trail School ninth graders Avery Carter, Isabel Blankenbaker and Ben Park recently attained the top three places in the local American Legion post’s oratorical competitions. The contest develops deeper knowledge and appreciation for the US Constitution among high school students. On Feb. 24, these three students participated in the district competition for the American Legion National High School Oratorical Contest. Park received third place and Blankenbaker was awarded second place. As first place recipient, Carter will represent the district at the
Vermont Department Contest in White River Junction on March 10. The state winner will advance to the national competition, where generous college scholarships are awarded. James Gallen, who teaches English at Long Trail and who also advised these students in their preparation said, “The students embraced preparing for a challenging competition that tested their skills in research, writing, and public speaking; their dedication to civic engagement and historical knowledge was reaffirming to my confidence in this country’s bright future.”
